Visiting Home Maid Cafe was a request by The Homie during our second visit to Maui (9/1/25). This is located in the Azeka Shopping Center in Kihei, across the parking lot from the post office. Service was very efficient. The interior gave a quasi cafe vibe, but we lucked out with table by the entrance to dine al fresco. Bonus: there was even a photogenic local chicken wandering nearby. The Homie had local fare, chili rice. I opted with basic french toast. We shared the bag of malasadas. I'd give it a realistic 3 to 3.5, however, bumping it to a 4 since this couple was working pretty hard on Labor Day.

Anytime I go to Maui this is a must! The breakfast sandwiches are simple and delicious, the loco moco is so good with the egg cooked perfectly every time and of course the malasadas are not to be missed! Whether you decide to get them plain or cream filled they are always delicious!

We come all the way from Seattle for their malasadas! Make sure and get the cream! Their breakfasts are great too. I love their Portuguese sausage. When I order my eggs I like them scrambled soft and they're one of the few restaurants who cooked them correctly.

We arrived in Maui early and were starving and my friend found this place. I don't understand why anyone would want to eat here. The service is nothing special and the place was not very clean and since the door was left wide open, flies were everywhere. We ordered the french toast which was so dry and there was no flavor. The butter and syrup did not help so we didn't bother finishing it. The Loco Moco was bland and even with salt it was just okay. We kept having to swat the flies from getting in our food. The coffee was decent which is why I am giving it 2 stars.

The family at Home Maid Cafe is just great! The breakfast sandwich and BLT never disappoint. Their sugar malasadas are hot and delicious! Thank you for being my favorite comfort breakfast;) I take mine to go so I can enjoy it in my garden

Easy going spot to fill up before the beach. The hash browns are crispy! The coffee is hot and tasty. The pancakes are fluffy goodness. Don't skip the malasadas ( 3 per order) with sugar or creamed filled to choose from.

My husband and I thought we ordered a reasonable amount of food and quickly realized we may have gotten a little too ambitious. Everything tasted fresh and comforting, and it was exactly the kind of breakfast we wanted before a full day of exploring the island. The staff was friendly, service moved quickly despite how busy it was, and the atmosphere felt very local and welcoming. There are a lot of breakfast spots on Maui, but I can see why this place is always recommended. If you're visiting, it's definitely worth stopping by at least once. Just don't make the same mistake we did and over-order... although I can't say I regret it.

Their menu has a fantastic range, offering everything from different varieties of coffee to light bites and big, hearty breakfasts. I absolutely loved the healthy options they offered, though I do wish they had some sugar-free options available. The system here is simple: you head inside to place your order, and then you find an open table. Within about 20 minutes, the staff will call your name and bring your food out fresh and piping hot. When you finish eating, it can be a bit confusing to know where to take your plate. I asked the staff and they said to just leave it on the table. While I am not accustomed to leaving dirty dishes behind, the staff is very prompt and efficient at clearing and cleaning up. Great spot overall!

However, the owner took the time to respond and explain that the entire shopping center wing was experiencing cooling issues and that the restaurant was dealing with significant staffing shortages at the time. While that doesn't completely change the experience we had, I appreciate that the owner acknowledged the challenges and responded professionally rather than dismissing the feedback. One observation I would offer is that, as a customer, it was difficult to tell who was serving tables. I noticed several employees in Pint & Cork shirts moving around the restaurant, but only saw a couple of servers actively covering the dining area. It's possible some staff were assigned to bartending or other responsibilities, but from the guest perspective it gave the impression that table service was understaffed while other employees appeared unavailable. I still think there is room for improvement in the flow and logistics on the floor, but I appreciate the owner's willingness to engage with feedback and explain the circumstances. That being said, I would be willing to give the restaurant another chance. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATED REVIEW AFTER OWNER'S RESPONSE: 6.21.26 I appreciate the response. It's telling that you addressed the air conditioning, disputed the gender of an employee, and questioned whether I was even there, yet didn't meaningfully respond to the concerns about service, timing, attentiveness, or food quality. If a customer leaves with a poor experience, the question isn't whether they perfectly recalled every detail. The question is why they left with that impression in the first place. I suspect future readers can draw their own conclusions from both the review and the response. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Probably the most disappointing dining experience of our Hawaii trip. We specifically asked to sit indoors because we wanted a break from the Maui heat after spending the day outside. Unfortunately, we quickly realized there was no air conditioning, making the indoor seating barely any cooler than outside. The restaurant also felt severely understaffed. It took around 10 minutes just to get a Diet Coke, and every time I asked for assistance, the woman working at the register seemed to defer the request rather than help or find someone who could. Meanwhile, some employees appeared more interested in chatting than helping customers, while only one or two staff members seemed to be working the floor. I understand restaurants get busy, especially in a tourist area, but the issue wasn't just the wait--it was the feeling that customer service wasn't a priority. As for the food, it was nothing special. I ordered a steak that had a nice smoky flavor, but it arrived well done and overcooked. The rest of the meal was average at best and definitely not memorable enough to make up for the service issues. Between the lack of air conditioning, slow service, inattentive staff, and mediocre food, this was one of the few places in Hawaii where I genuinely regretted spending my money. Considering the location at The Shops at Wailea and the prices being charged, I expected a much higher level of hospitality and execution. There are far too many great dining options in Wailea to come back here.

Unfortunately, this was by far the most disappointing experience we've had. Looking back, we probably should have asked to speak with a manager while we were there, but after everything that happened, we simply felt uncomfortable and wanted to leave. I'll start with the positives because there were several. The drinks were delicious, the sea bass was excellent, and the dessert was absolutely incredible. The pasta itself was a little overcooked and soggy, but the flavor was still very good. The disappointing part of our evening was the service. After our server initially introduced herself, it took quite a while before she returned to take our drink order. When we were ready to order dinner, my husband was still deciding between a couple of menu items. Rather than giving him another moment, our server became visibly impatient and said she would come back after delivering our drinks. It ended up being more than 10 minutes before she returned. When I asked whether the entrees came with bread, her response made me feel embarrassed for even asking. Since they didn't, we ordered the biscuits as an appetizer to enjoy while waiting for our meals. Our children's meals arrived promptly, which we appreciated. However, our server never once stopped by to see if the kids needed anything. I had to flag down another server just to get ketchup. Meanwhile, our server walked past our table several times without checking on us or asking if we'd like another round of drinks--which we actually would have ordered. When our entrees arrived, the biscuits still hadn't come out. Shortly afterward, our server finally checked on us. I let her know that since our meals had already arrived, we no longer needed the biscuits and simply asked that they not be included on the bill. Her response was, "Well, they're made fresh and in the oven now. I guess I can go tell the kitchen you don't want them anymore." I replied, "They were supposed to be our appetizer, and our meals are already here now." Before I could even finish my sentence, she walked away while I was still speaking and appeared to mumble something under her breath. That interaction left my husband and me feeling shocked and disappointed. We've dined at many restaurants over the years and have never felt spoken to in that manner. We had considered asking to speak with a manager at that point, but honestly, we just wanted to finish our meal and leave without any further uncomfortable interactions. This was especially disappointing because Tommy Bahama has always been one of our favorite restaurants and a place we genuinely look forward to visiting whenever we're in Hawaii. We hope this experience was an exception rather than the standard, because the food continues to be wonderful--the service simply did not match the quality we've come to expect.

Suggested tip is 25%, that's a huge red flag! Lahaina Brewing purchased Kohola brewing about one year ago. How I wish I had visited before that, because looking at historical Yelp reviews, the previous food offerings look SO much more interesting and were made with local and traditional products. Now what you get is $11 spam musubi, a pretzel that has both fish roe and sugary syrup on it (gross!) for $21, pseudo-Niçoise salad for $28 (WTF!), and imported shrimp cocktail for $5 a shrimp. Piss off! Even the server said it was a total rip-off. The menu is massively disappointing for those who actually have a frame of reference. Good thing we only came for beer. Tried the Kohola beer in Makawao and was very impressed. The Tall Story Pale Ale is really excellent, gold standard for pale ale, but you don't have to come here to enjoy it. Happy Hour is 2-5 p.m., $2 off Kohola draft and $4 off a glass of wine. Regular price beer is $8.50, fairly standard price. Unlike others, we had a good service experience. The ambience is comfortable, but I still would not return.
