CAUTION!!! This company is a racket! They came to my 1 bedroom apartment to load up and they nickel and dime'd me for literally everything. So much so my previous estimate doubled, but didn't tell me it double until after the truck was completely loaded. So they basically held my belongings hostage so I'd sign in agreement to the inflated price, and said it would cost 6k to unload it if I wasn't happy with the price.. ***holes!! This was a cross country move and what would take a normal time frame 4 to 5 days to deliver this company took 20. They picked up in one truck and then delivered in an 18 wheeler, which made it impossible to deliver in an urban area. So if you use them, prepare to get storage. if you're unfortunate and you do have to deal with Hometown Van make sure you watch the inventory like a hawk.. because they will add items that don't exist just so they can charge you extra. They padded my move to the point that I had to get two storage lockers And when they delivered I actually only needed one, and when I looked at the inventory I saw in the line items where they added items that I didn't even have. And the end.. this company is very dishonest and don't do a good job. They're scummy, rude, and unworthy to be in business.. NOT RECOMMEND!!!!!!! read more

My biggest gripe with Hometown Van Lines is their unprofessionalism and lack of communication. There really is no way to find movers without a broker. So, they get the job from the broker, surprise the client with contracts and fees that weren't mentioned by the broker, then when the person is understandably upset, they blame the broker. It's definitely on hometown to reach out to a job beforehand and 1. send the contract for a reasonable review time, and 2. be very, very clear about their delivery process. Initially, I was quoted a reasonable price by my brokers for the amount of things I had. Had I known Hometown Van Lines LLC would be my mover beforehand, I would have never booked this service at all due to their consistently horrible reviews. When they got to my apartment, they shoved an unfinished contract in my face with a price that was double my original quote. The driver assured me that I would never be charged this much, but that they leave some room in case they need extra packing materials. If I didn't sign this, they wouldn't take my things. I had to be out of this apartment by 7am the following day, so I didn't really have a choice but to sign. After everything was packed up, they actually tried to charge me MORE than that initial number, because of hidden fees like "long walk to the elevator" and a claim that I had over 100 cubic feet more than the original quote. I was moving a studio apartment's worth of stuff and had very few items, so I was confused by this. I asked what took up the most space and it was the things they repackaged on their own. At this point, I started asking them to take larger items off the truck to cut down on space. They tried to tell me that they would charge me $500 to take any items off the truck. They started cutting their little charges here and there, and acted like they were doing me a favor by cutting the price to *just* $1000 over my original quote. When I moved in to my new place, they held my things for over two weeks. No one was able to tell me when my stuff was coming or even a maximum number of days they could hold it based on my location (the contract defines this for East Coast to West Coast and East Coast to the Midwest, but not East Coast to the South). I slept on an air mattress in an empty apartment for t w o weeks. When they FINALLY dropped off, neither of the movers wore masks. I understand that it's hot but we are still in a pandemic. Also a bunch of my items are scratched or broken. Picture of my shattered TV attached. At the end of it all, I wish I would have just shipped my small items and sold/rebought all my furniture. It would have been faster, cheaper, and MUCH less of a headache. I only even booked movers in the first place because I had to move alone and unexpectedly during COVID, and did not want to sell/rebuy used items or make the 22-hour drive in a U-Haul alone. Again, if one single person would have reached out to me and explained their terms clearly this would have been different. If your M.O. is to provide absolutely terrible service and then hide behind the small print of the massive contract they give you at the time of pick-up, there's something wrong there. Brokers are predatory but not everything can be blamed on them. I would also like to say that customer service really gets the short end of the stick. Literally the worst company I've ever dealt with in my life. First of all, we were placed with this company from a third party company. That's when it went downhill. The estimate tripled after they contacted is a few days prior. When they got there, the movers tried to sell a bunch of upcharges to try to cheat us. They charge to weigh but don't make that clear prior to the day of moving. So, bad so far. But gets worse. The communication is AWFUL. We asked multiple times where our stuff was, and the company got mad at us for asking WHERE OUR STUFF WAS. It was unbelievable! Also, they didn't know for 24 hours. Also prepare for rude customer service. The worst was the part where they were yelling at my wife when we were asking where our stuff was. Couldn't believe it. Moving is already a stressful process. Also, it's expensive. Do yourself a favor...find somewhere else. Find someone that isn't going to yell at you for looking for the location of your stuff. I was matched with Hometown Van Lines through a 3rd party who quoted me ~$2000 about a month before the scheduled move date. The day arrives and it's a company I had never interacted with (Hometown Van Lines) who loaded my stuff and told me the price would be more than double my original quote. What choice did I have? They had already loaded my stuff and I had arranged for the move almost a month in advance. I paid. Then, in the move from PA to FL, they broke one of the glass panels to my coffee table. Apparently, I didn't buy extra insurance and their standard contract says they only had to pay me $0.60 per pound of the damaged product. Replacing the glass cost me $91, they reimbursed me $37 after 3 months of constant update requests from me and no communication from them. They also wanted $300 to remove the trash and mess they had made unloading my stuff in my new house. Use someone else and save yourself the headache. read more

Hometown just moved my family from New York City to Lewes, DE. We have moved a lot and have survived bad experiences, but Hometown was simply fantastic. Francisco and his team were communicative, responsible, fast, and careful. The amazing Chadney also was very helpful in telling us what we needed to know. The turnaround was amazing. So my previous review was only bc the moving company BLACKMAILED me in order to get a discount. I was so dissatisfied with when they came to pick my things up that infused a complaint. Lucas then called me and told me bc i filed a complaint, it wouldn't benefit THE COMPANY in any way to "help me out or give me a discount" he said that a lawyer could be calling me instead of him so I should be lucky. And then said the only way they would give me a discount is if I wrote a positive review on Yelp AND the BBB website. Unbelievable. During that phone call he also wouldn't let me talk ans kept on reeming me out. Then once I started to talk he would interrupt, tell me he needed to put me on hold, or he would just start talking to one of his coworkers. Absolutely insane. Insane. They tripled the cost, they're customer service is deplorable. They won't call you back-ever. I can't tell you how many COUNTLESS times they say they'll call you back "at such and such a time" and they don't. They tell you you'll get your things and you won't. They say they'll show up and they don't (happened to me 8 times!!!!!) One time I called and Lucas picked up the phone first talking to one of his coworkers then said, "Carli jll call you back in 5 minutes. Thanks bye." And hung up. I didn't even get to say one word. It's been over a week I don't have my things and I moved 900 miles from home. This company is a scam. This company should be put out of business. This company is in cahoots with crooked brokers and they should all be shut down. Zero stars; Worst experience! After agreeing to contract with Keystone Moving Group, Hometown Van LLC came to pick up on 3.28.20 in Queens, NY. Items to be transported to ATL. When driver arrived he demanded I sign unfinished paperwork which included billing or he would not proceed with the move. After explaining I don't feel comfortable he had me talk to a supervisor who threatened me saying, "sign now or good luck getting someone to move you." Given the timing with Covid running through NYC and my family already in Georgia I felt I did not have a choice but sign. After additional charges hometown charged me $1713 more than the original agreement not inclusive of the $225 cash payment to the driver for the "long carry" that Hometown says they have no record of and it my word against the driver. No company employee wore masks or followed any cdc guidelines. Driver got in an altercation with my building super and did not follow rules of building. Delivery was supposed to be no later than 4.2.20. Items were delivered on 4.6.20. I emailed, text and called Keystone in reference to my displeasure without any real response other than a run around. The movers again charged me for a long carry in cash to the driver. Did not assemble any of my furniture aside from one bed and broke many items that I never had refunded. read more

I wish I could give less than 1 star. Hometown Van Lines accepted my move from a broker. It was a binding estimate. They walked in the day of my move and said "We won't honor that price. You will have to pay us a lot more or we won't move your stuff." I got a manager on the phone who cursed at me. Their "new price" was 1500 dollars more than my contract, in spite of the fact that every item I owned was listed on the estimate. They were condescending, rude and threatening. I had no choice but to agree to this new price since my lease ended that day. To be clear, I had paid for packing supplies in my binding estimate, and they refused to provide any of the supplies listed without me paying an additional 30 dollars a box. They proceeded to haphazardly throw my belongings into boxes and drag furniture down the street. I wish I could say delivery was better. It was a long distance move. They refused to provide any time frame for which my stuff would be delivered (would not even narrow it down to the week things would be delivered). When the driver finally did show up, it was 1 man and his 14 year old daughter. Hometown Van Lines had sent ONE person driving alone across the country. Luckily, there was a way into my apartment without stairs, because certainly one person could not carry furniture upstairs on their own. They tried to charge me extra for using the entrance that did not involve stairs. This company is a scam. They are fraudulent, rude, and careless. These guys were hired through a third party system. Pickup was really great, but everything after that point and delivery were beyond the worst experience of my life. My items were picked up in Washington DC on December 18th, 2018 and I was told it would be no problem to have it delivered by or before January 6th, 2019. January 19th, 2019 my stuff was delivered. Except...I'm missing 2 wardrobe boxes. Damaged items, trashed boxes - my items were delivered in garbage condition. The ONE delivery driver delivered my items and stated that he would sleep one hour here, 3 hours there etc on his journey across the US. Highly illegal and concerning. Save yourself the hassle. They won't call you back, they won't resolve issues, and they also won't pull into a storage unit. Pro tip: Be sure you have a farm/extremely large parking lot where a semi truck can park and do donuts. Otherwise, you'll incur more charges or you won't be accepting your items. Cheers. read more

The price of what we were qouted jumped like crazy. From $2700 to $5200. I understand that it was expensive but we also didn't expect such a huge jump. BUT when it came to deliver our items it was a different story. The manager, Lucas was extremely rude to speak to. He told us that we would get a call with the drivers info, the day our items would leave the wearhouse and head over to Colorado. No call. I called Lucas several times trying to get the driver info. Lucas would either be busy, ignore the call, or tell me to call 1-4 hours later because he was busy. My husband works with UPS freight so I know how crazy it can get. I tried giving him the benefit of the doubt because I know he must have been stressed 24/7. When I finally got an answer he immediately accused me of saying they were "holding our items". It cought me off guard and tried to remind him what he had told me, (supposed to get a call with driver info) eventually he gave me the information I needed. I tried calling the driver but he never answered. Again understandable since he was probably driving. He eventually called us a day before he arrived. Now, at the new apartment the driver was unable to deliver it to the door due to the drive way being too narrow. They were trying to charge us an extra $880 for using a smaller truck to move our items. We were told this in advance so it wasn't a huge shock but at the same time an additional $800 on top of the $5200 we already paid is just rediculous. We asked the driver to leave the items on the side of the road to avoid paying extra $$. He agreed to do so. The best part, THE DRIVER WAS DELIVERING EVERYTHING ALONE!!! we paid $5200 for a FULL SERVICE moving company. But we ended up having to help the driver/unloader in moving the items out of the truck. Then we had to move the items into our apartment on our own. Oh and his manager kept asking and demanding him to get back to the wearhouse or wherever he needed to go. YOUR DRIVER WAS WORKING ALONE MOVING 25 BOXES AND SEVERAL OTHER HEAVY ITEMS, CUT THE MAN SOME SLACK!!! Family and friends said we should have called the company and ask for a partial refund. As much as I would have liked to do so I didn't. As I said before, Lucas was very rude and off putting. While it was nice idea having a "full service" moving company, it was definitely a headache to deal with. I learned to just suck it up and order a pod/storage service instead and move the items myself. For those of you moving halfway or full way cross country, definitely do your research and plan for your items to take a minimum of 2 weeks to get to your new home and for it being thousands of dollars. read more

The company advertises professionally trained movers on their website to pack, ship and deliver your items. However when it came to my delivery day, the movers who were supposed to meet the driver of my items did not show and so he hired amateurs on the spot without tell us. Needless to say the move was slow, unprofessional and cumbersome. The amateur movers left while the job was still underway. The driver of my items then hired a stranger from a nearby gas station to fold moving blankets, but ultimately used this person's help to carry the remainder of the items into my home, despite my insistence that i was not comfortable allowing this person into my residence! Many items were damaged during the move. I had already paid them up front, however I refused to sign the contract on delivery as I did not feel I received the professional movers advertised. After this I received a coercive phone call stating I needed to sign a contract stating I was satisfied with their service before I could discuss any claims or the larger issue of allowing an un-vetted stranger into my home and access to my items. This is more than poor customer service. What occurred during my move was misleading, careless and dangerous and I have photos to support my claim. read more

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!! Avoid this company like the plague! We hired Keystone Moving Group for our move and purchased the Platinum Moving Package that included the full package of them packing, safely delivering and the unpacking our belongings. We was quoted one price by Keystone for $6,500 and paid a $1500 deposit to Keystone and were told that I would have 2ea 20' Box Trucks at the time of the move. On the day of the move (Friday 2/21/20), Hometown Van Line shows up with one 20 box truck and immediately tell me its going to be another $10,000 for the move.... I asked them where the 2nd truck was and they acted like they knew nothing about it and said they only quoted it for one truck even though i was told from Keystone that i would have 2ea trucks (one for our new home and one going to storage). After their manager Lucas called and spoke over me the entire time, I finally agreed since it was just an estimate and would possibly be lower costs. I asked if they would take a CC for the first half of the payment. They said yes. They packed up one truck Friday and had to go deliver it into storage to use the same truck on Saturday to get the rest of our belongings. On Saturday they tell me that they cant take CC because it was the weekend and i would have to get Money orders... Big scammers. I go get money orders for the 1st half of the move (thank God i had it in my account) and paid them so they could finish. The only person that spoke English had to leave to go get moving supplies and left 2 men that couldn't speak English in our home and that caused them to mess up multiple boxes that should have went to storage but they sent to the house and vise versa. The foreman got back a couple hrs later and they finished packing and loading. I picked my 1st Delivery Date 2/24/20 and my Latest Delivery Date 2/28/20. They didn't deliver until 3/7/20, 2 full weeks from their last day of pickup. I was NOT told upfront about delivery date being flexible. I was told to pick a specific date for delivery at that is how everything else would be determined. They finally called me on Thursday 3/5/20 and told me that they would not take my cashiers check from my bank and that i had to pay them in Postal Money Orders. I called Lucas once again only to be talked to like scum and not a paying customer. They would not take a money order or cashiers check because it took to long to clear their bank.... What kind of Mickey Mouse operation does this sound like to you? So I had to cancel my money order with my bank, wait for the funds to become available and go to the post office to get 8ea money orders just so they could clear their bank faster.... Once they arrived on 3/7/2020, the driver was the only employee from Hometown Van Lines and he hired 6 day labor guys that looked like they just got out of prison to upload and unpack my belongings. A couple of the men were great but the others were horrible and some appeared to be on drugs. My wife and I have a 1 yr. old little girl that we put in her room and advised no one to enter her room. They did anyway and brought toys in her room without my or my wife's knowledge.They scuffed my walls in my new house, several items were broke, ect.. We felt so unsafe with them in our home that I advised them to just leave my belongings in the garage and i would unpack them (even though i paid for them to do so). The driver did try to tell me that we didn't pay for them to unpack our belongings and couldn't get anyone at their office to verify on a Saturday. We did pay for it... So, we had them work on only putting the beds together, one of which they stripped 2 of the screws out and now i am unable to tighten or loosen with half the bolt still sticking out. they had no tools for minor furniture assembly and had to use my tools.... We will be pursuing legal issues against them and keystone moving unless issues are satisfied. If you are reading this, PLEASE save yourself from ever using these CROOKS!!! read more

First and foremost, I should have done my research on using a moving broker such as Purple Heart vs a direct company. After reading and speaking with sales (Josh), I felt as if Purple Heart would treat us well and get our belongings from NC to CA safely. However, there were a number of issues encountered. Purple Heart outsourced to Hometown Van Lines who outsources to a driver named Ramy- no company name. No background provided. I was told verbally that our belongings would arrive on 9/9 (or close to it). Ramy was very unresponsive. I had to contact him multiple times and he was extremely rude asking me not to call the company because he "had a family and kids". Our belongings arrived 9/15 after repeated calls. (Could be worse). He then tried to tell us he could not unload our things, then tried to charge us a long carry because our house was deep. It was 35 ft from road to front door.... he then became quite nasty and argumentative. This is likely a good place to point out that we were quoted at $6100 but then after our belongings were all loaded on the truck, were told it was $11,000. They tried to validate by saying we had 154 items vs 104- that's because the quote said a bed was 1 piece but the movers broke it into 8 pieces, same for other items. They said we were 750 cubic feet over. I calculated 165ish. Their quoting method is to waaayyyy underbid a move. Ramy (thé driver) posted our move on Craigslist and a random teenager with NO moving experience was enlisted to help move our stuff. (The kid said this multiple times as he kept apologizing for dropping our boxes.) Although he was a nice kid, anyone could have seen our address on Craigslist and gone through our things as we live in a not so great area in Oakland. The crew damaged our wine fridge, left many items unassembled, left all of their trash, several blankets, and just left. They also left a box outside the back door with expensive shoes that was rained on. I didn't see it until the next day. Worst experience ever. I reported this to Purple Heart who said they would run in through their supervisor but we never heard anything back, no apologies, no refunds, nothing. I'm normally not one to leave bad reviews but the experience with Purple Heart and Hometown Van Lines was TERRIBLE. (With thé exception of the nice movers who loaded our belongings in NC. I got placed with Home Town Van Lines through a moving broker, who had quoted me a price of $1560 for my interstate move. The final price I had to pay was $2730. Details below. Pickup: When they arrived to pick up my things, they explained that the quote the brokers gave me was based on a set weight/cubic feet. If my things were over the set amounts, I would have to pay more. I had to choose whether they would charge me by weight or by cubic feet, and I had to make this decision before they started loading (not sure why). If I chose cubic feet, there would be no way for me to verify the accuracy of what they charge, but if I chose weight, I could get a weight ticket that proved my item's weight. However, they would charge me a $300 "admin" fee for the 'courtesy' of weighing my things. So either I chose a method that was unverifiable (cubic feet), or for the verifiable method I would get charged $300. After threatening to cancel, they said they would waive the weighing fee (which makes me think it wasn't a legit fee at all, just a cheap way to wring some money out of me), so I went with weight. (Additionally, they charged an extra ~$150 for packing materials for my furniture, which I was not informed about prior.) They had also labelled all my items as scratched (but obscurely through abbreviations and bad handwriting, so that I was not aware until after the pickup was completed and signed. My fault for not reading carefully, but still sketchy business practice). Once they pick up my things, I try calling a week later to ask about the weight, but received no response. Then, through the broker, I find out they claim my things were 800 pounds over, which was an additional cost of about $600. Given that I was moving a small 1-bedroom, and did not have any particularly heavy furniture, I was highly skeptical. I asked my broker if they could get the weight ticket for me, but they were unable to. I called Hometown Van Lines directly, and they assured me they would email it to me. It has now been 3 weeks since I first asked for proof of the $600 overcharge, and I've still not received any, despite multiple calls for it. My things were delivered, and I had no choice but to pay the charge. It's ridiculous to charge so much, based on something I was told would be verifiable at pickup, and not have any proof for it. In fact, when I called them, the guy I spoke to said the documents were in his supervisor's office and he didn't have access so 'his hands were tied'. He then said 'but you know the final charge, why do you need the weight tickets? Even if we don't have the weight tickets your cost would be the same'. When I asked for his supervisor's contact, his initial response was "I don't want to give you that". The delivery itself was some 5 hours late, and I got charged an extra $350 (!) for a shuttle, as apparently the expectation is that you have enough room for an 18-wheeler semi trailer next to your apartment. On top of that, I got another extra charge as they only cover moving one flight of stairs. Given that my apartment is on the second floor, I thought I would be covered, until I discovered they define a flight of stairs as 7 steps. Lol. My items themselves were delivered in okay condition, other than my desk support pegs being broken. My bed was also unable to be reassembled fully, as the screw holes were worn out, though it seems usable. Not sure if that happened when they disassembled it or what. Overall, very disappointing experience with this company. I would really recommend against using them, find someone else unless you want to be charged some 70% extra for things that you have no say over and they cannot prove. Funny aside, on their facebook page they are rated 5-star, and have seemingly perfect reviews. However, if you check it out, those accounts look pretty fake to me - stock profile pictures and less than 5 friends for most of those accounts, and all the reviews are too perfect, which doesn't seem realistic or match the reviews here on Yelp. Pretty sad - really sketchy company, just avoid it. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!! With out writing a dissertation length review I'll hit the "highlights"... Arrived much later than told or expected, cost me a plane ticket/rented car because I was told a date for furniture delivery was scheduled earlier than my arrival in new city.... but they didn't show up. Not a single person was reachable. Talked to original company that set this up (that's another story) they had the audacity to give me an attitude for asking where my belongings are. Once my stuff did arrive, a number of items are broken, my headboard in three places, my end table is smashed, a side chair is permanently scarred with a big gouge on seat..... Than to top it off I got a phone call from property manager letting me know that a large portion of my belongings (boxes/furniture) were left on the 3rd floor in middle of hallway (my unit is on the 6th floor) .... It's despicable the lack of care or concern this company has with peoples valued possessions. Just get out of the business if you're not going to do it right. read more

The top three things I expect from a moving company are for my items to be delivered on time, in tact, and for the price quoted. NONE of these were met with this company. The delivery was nearly 2 weeks late after falsely stating delivery estimates TWICE. This cost nearly $2,000 extra dollars as well as the time taken traveling across country to meet the movers who did not arrive in either occasion. I was never told my belongings would be shipped hundreds of miles in the wrong direction to be put in storage for nearly 2 weeks before finally shipping. When I called to complain about the poor service I was spoken to in a very condescending manner. All of the trouble could have been avoided had the company been up front and transparent instead of responding to me in false and misleading statements. Also, several pieces of furniture were broken upon arrival including two hand made pieces that were carefully marked as fragile. As for cost, the final cost was over $4,000 more than the initial quote. Also, because I had to arrange for a relative to be present during the delivery when it finally arrived late and we weren't able to supervise the move in, our things were left unassembled and stacked in piles in the garage. My fiancee and I were caused tremendous stress during an already stressful event by this company. My sincere advice is to find a different company for your move. read more

They moved me awhile ago, an item broke and I made a claim the way I was instructed to by their paperwork. The claim came through for only $30 and I should have received it back in late February and early March, but did not. I gave a little more time and early April I contacted both the claims individuals and the company. Claim people told me I had to contact the company and I did, I got a hold of someone and told them and they said to email the documents and they would get it out next week. And that is the last time I have heard from them. I emailed again, I've called and got no response so I left messages, but still no response. It takes only a few minutes to email or call someone back and ridiculous for this to happen for a claim of $30. read more

I read all the reviews, and felt I could trust this company. Sorely disappointed in the office and practices. I will not recommend them to anyone, as I was not given the courtesy of a call back, or a follow-up after the move (as a company, wouldn't you want to know if all went well?), and would advise have the moving company come to the house for a non-changeable quote. When giving everything I owned that would be on the truck, I tried to be as accurate as possible, and Chris came up with around 850 square feet. I had a 2 bedroom, Kitchen/living room/dining room combination. Gave him the "extras" like a chaise lounge, bar table, knee high leg/foot massager, 2 hope chest/ottomans, 7 ft tall clock and small kitchen island on wheels, small and medium ladders, and 60 small boxes, 10 medium and 10 large plus 2 each of S-M-L suitcases that I filled like boxes. I called back, added 10 more of each, M-L more boxes to the total, and the man said, my additional deposit would be $22.00. The day of the move, the man with the truck walked in and said, I can see just by looking that it is 1000 to 1200 square feet. Amazingly, it was EXACTLY 1200 square feet (which if you are looking on line to move a 2 bedroom home with a uhaul, they say it is about 1200 square feet). Imagine that. 3500 dollar estimate was now 5500 dollars. BIG difference. Asked the pick up driver and he said he would have the company call. Called the company 3 times and left messages, no return calls. Delivery driver said he would have them call me. No call to this day, and they picked up my furniture on September 29th and delivered on October 10th. Needless to say, I was not able to tip the workers, as I had to find an additional 1000 on the spot to have them move me and another 1000 when they delivered. I am disappointed that Chris, the salesman, and I worked so well together, and I kept saying make it bigger or more square feet as I would rather plan for it than be surprised by it. The movers did a fine job. # pieces of broken glass, 1 piece of a lamp missing. I will say the very cheap tape took a while to get off some of the things they wrapped it around, as the plastic came off easily, but the adhesive did not. I will not recommend them to anyone, as I was not given the courtesy of a call back, or a follow-up after the move (as a company, wouldn't you want to know if all went well?), and would advise have the moving company come to the house for a non-changeable quote. read more

Got stuck with them through a broker for a move from NY to Florida in August last year. The pick up driver says the broker underestimated the cubic feet, we were then charged for additional cubic feet, also for packing and boxes, like 40 dollars a box. The driver says everything has to be in a box, the broker should have told us that. All the oversized or awkward items we carefully padded and taped were tossed into boxes. Driver admits he didn't look at the inventory before his arrival, which was 2 hours late. He says he knows it'll more but can't say how much more. Turned out to be $1674 more. During the 17 days our belongings were held hostage, no luck getting a call back from anyone at Hometown for a delivery date. On a Friday, get a call from the driver, delivery will be the following Monday, and oh we need to use a shuttle truck, that'll be $1600 more. Bring cash. It was a U-Haul, a $200 truck tops. Driver complained about other customers to us, complained about getting a desk up the stairs, really whiny guy. Was happy to pocket the cash though. The guys doing the work, the actual loaders and unloaders were great at pick up and delivery. But the brokers and the company seem to be taking advantage of people who have no choice but to go along in the moment. Overall, a rotten experience. read more

Very disappointed in their service, we had some antiques damaged and cannot be replaced and they sent me a whole whopping $123! Even after I not only sent pictures of the damage but they also asked for pictures of the same or similar items for price comparison and we still only received $123... REALLY? When they loaded our items up to move they didn't even pay attention to the "This Side Up" stickers we placed. The real "surprise" was that every time we turned around the price kept getting higher, we went from $10,000 to $18,000 and what is a person to do when they have ALL your household items kept hostage until you pay before they unload. If you want to be deceived and misinformed then by all means use these people. But if you don't want to be deceived about pricing, hidden fees, extortionist tactics then look elsewhere. Lucas openly told me that the additional fees for over sized items was not always charged and that is why the estimate (in which we identified our oversized items) did not include them. Then he promised to look into it after I had to pay them an additional $3000.00 (as much as the original estimate and we still owed another $3000). The driver added the fees on everything oversized and told us they were instructed to always charge. And the part about packing included: if you want to pay $20-$45 for a box, $14 for tape, $7 for paper, $14 for plastic wrap then yes it is included. Lucas did nothing but cover for his company and make excuses. As for Military your discount only applies to the estimate and not all of the hidden charges you are going to incur. Anthony and his team (Cristian and Julio) were a little late due to NYC traffic but we're totally communicative the entire time! They more than made up for it with the speed at which they worked. They are some of the most honest and hardworking people I have ever met! They made a very stressful situation (moving out of state solo with a one year old) so much easier! To start off if there were an option to give less than 1 star I would give NEGATIVE 10 stars. This is by far the worse company I've ever had to deal with. I don't understand how a company can run with the non-existing means of communication this one does. It's fine until they get their money ( which will always be more than quoted on moving day when you're stuck at that point). I moved from Virginia to Florida and went through Haul-U, I didn't realize until they got to my house on moving day that they were just a broker who set us up with Hometown Vanlines. At that point we were charged more than double the amount I was quoted. It only got worse from there. They moved things they were told not to move or touch and vice versa. The main office number is fake as no one ever answers or calls you back regardless of how urgent the message is. I went months not knowing where my furniture was. When it was delivered it was a nightmare to say the least. There was many broken items and they DO NOT re-assemble your furniture even though it is in the contract to do so. They put parts to multiple pieces of furniture in random boxes that we only found randomly while unpacking. I am handicapped and needed my custom bed put together more than anything and they could not find the parts to my bed. They left with nothing completed along with damaging my wall at the front door. When I tried to call to report this and file a claim it was no surprise that I couldn't get through to anyone. I refused to sign the paperwork at delivery and have not heard anything from them! They demand cash before unloading your furniture so you get completely stuck for a second time. Here it is a month later and I have made multiple phone calls and sent multiple emails and am not hearing back from anyone!! This is a SCAM and they should be shut down for unfairness and taking advantage of people. Believe all the bad reviews on this company. I wish I would have known the company I ended up with so I could have seen the reviews! Now I'm stuck with being completely robbed of $8K and no one seems to care. I will be filing a complaint to the Better Business Bureau but I don't feel it will do anything after reading all of these reviews! We kept calling and calling to ask when it would be delivered and then they just called and said - we will be there today! Do not use this company! This will be very long but let me explain why. Listen to everyone's horror stories because they aren't lying! This company was a third party hire by Best Cross Country Movers (BCCM) so they showed up on moving day, already adding a bit to the stress of moving across the country. My fiancé had already moved across the country multiple times so he knew the routine. Unfortunately due to work my fiancé already had been moved out to our destination so I had to go through all of this alone. But no worries, he'd tell me what to expect. He said 5 or 6 people usually show up to help with the packing and moving, as we paid for full service packing. He said with the amount of stuff we had it should be around 6 or 7 grand for the whole thing, even though we were estimated for a little over 4 grand. He said it should take about 10 days to get to our destination. Boy, was he wrong. 3 people showed up to do ALL of the packing, only one did the talking and his English wasn't great so I had to ask him to repeat what he said multiple times until I understood. Right out the gate, there were hidden fees that had to be paid by cash. I had no cash on me and couldn't leave while the movers were there. I spoke with a representative from Best Cross Country Movers who took care of it (he was great). Okay, rough start but no problem. We do a walk through so he can look at everything. He told me the amount that we prepaid for moving materials wasn't going to be enough and that we were going to have to pay more for packing materials, fine I expected that. Couldn't be more than another grand. He told me how many cubic feet we were estimated for and told me that sounded about right, maybe we would use a little more but not much but if our cubic feet increased, so would other costs, like fuel. Okay a little increase shouldn't be bad. They finally get done loading everything after having a few more arguments with the movers (but the representative kept taking care of it, again he was great). Now he goes over final costs with me. Somehow now this truck was full, meaning our cubic feet TRIPLED. With that happening and the extra packing materials, our total cost almost TRIPLED what we were estimated. Remember, half can be paid with a card as they are leaving, but the remainder must be paid in full in CASH at the destination. I called my fiancé who was FUMING about the price. He had done this type of move so many times with WAY more stuff and it cost nowhere near this much. Whatever our stuff is loaded, we will figure it out. The movers also told me I'd be contacted the next day with more information about when we should get our stuff, since we could realistically receive it the next day with my fiancé already being out there. Fast forward to a week later. I had driven out there, and I took my sweet time, and had been settled for a few days. We had heard NOTHING from Hometown Van Lines nor Best Cross Country Movers. My fiancé calls every single day, no response. Finally he received an email saying they'd send out the stuff Monday and we should get it within a week. THEY HADN'T EVEN BEGAN MOVING IT. I get that people are hired to drive it and whatnot but they hadn't even stayed in contact to tell us what was happening. The whole time we were thinking it could show up any day, NOPE. My fiancé gets angry about that, also gets upset about the price increase. They (BCCM) state they had a policy stating if the movers give you an estimate higher than your original, call BCCM and go over it and don't let the movers pack your stuff yet. Problem is they didn't tell me about this HUGE price increase until everything was already packed and loaded in the truck so, didn't help at all. Finally, the mover contacted us saying the stuff will be delivered tomorrow (Monday, now almost at 3 weeks after they left our apartment with our stuff), then promptly called back and say they can deliver today. We scramble around and a half hour later they call and say it'll be tomorrow again. They arrive at the house and the guys that did the unloading were actually great and I have no complaints about them at all. It has now been a long week of unpacking and after finally going through everything we realize we are missing items which is very frustrating. One of the main ones being an expensive sound bar/system for the living room tv. This whole thing was a huge headache, much worse than it should've been, and from people who don't stay in contact with you about your entire life's worth of items over multiple weeks. Frustrating and disappointing. If you're gonna spend an obnoxious amount of money to move, do it with a better company. read more

I Am selling you by first hand information..I have recorded calls.I didnt choose this compagni but I Guess.I was misled by another company that said they were the movers who contracted this out to this Joke of a conpany..I was quoted a fair price by the original company who had An accurate inventory. Then this hometown shows up before even seeing my one bedroom apartment says we charge another 500.00 dollar amministrative fee nowhere noted on the binding estimate because they wanted me to charge from going by Pounds to cubic feet.. Even touch my estimate was done by pounds. I argued with the manager who was rude. Like no customer service skills at all which is probably they need to have another company actually give them business..He didnt listen and he talked over me.. I also explained to him the estimate they had was NOT the updated estimate with the accurate inventory where I paid more for.. He says the other company didnt give him the updated estimate and that he has to go by this one the mover then asks for me to text him the updated estimate..So they think im not going to get credit for the extra Money I paid..lol..Here is the Funniest party they take about 2 hours to load my one bedroom apartment and I say are you taking It to a weigh station and should i follow you? They tell me oh no we take your stuff to our warehouse and unload It then load It on a smaller truck and weigh It they will call you on Monday or tuesday after thats completed. I laughed and said I dont trust that because im pretty sure you are going to add weight. NO sir that is illegal..lol.. I dont here anything from them for 25 days no clue when I am getting my stuff..They finally call me 25 days Later and try to tell me that the weight came in over 1100 Pound heavier than my estimate I laughed and said thats impossibile and they gagarin still are going by the first estimate ignoring the extra Money I paid..lol..I Am not going to lie I wasnt nice back because these rude wanna be phone tough guys that dont want to listen to the facts are trying to talk around me. So now after talking to my lawyer and shopping him all the quotes emails texts and phone calls is telling me I have to have a police Officer supervise the move and record everything and also ask them on video tape to reweigh my stuff with me present which is the law without any extra cost..It sad I work for the Department of Defense so now I have to have lawyers (family member) police, my general and chiefs at work involved in this..Just because people dont want to do the right thing.. Again a one bedroom apartment all the specs from the living room furniture and bedroom set weight and 21 boxes Arent even close to 3600 lbs..trying to make a customer pay An adminstrative fee not even listed on any estimate.. Also the company I hired assured me they sent them the updated moving estimate with the Money I paid and when they called hometown they said why didnt I tell them when they where there..Lol I have proof with a recorded call and I also texted It to the mover..So Just pack on the lies.. The negative reviews are correct. They will try and add any charge they can. As well, Lucas (an employee) is a horrible human being. He will yell at you and talk down to you over the phone. They will not provide you with the information you need and will hold your stuff hostage until you pay them their extra fees. DO NOT go with this company. After all the chargers, I learned it is cheaper to sell my stuff and buy new items OR go with U-Haul, U-Pack, or PODS - a big name company. These companies seem more expensive at first, but they end up being less than Hometown because Hometown Van Lines LLC has many hidden fees. My move ended up being twice the amount estimated to me when I booked with this company. Also, they broke 2 of my bookcases, a tv unit, and lost my nightstand and mirror. I got a number to call to claim all my broken and missing items, but the claims process is extensive and takes close to a year. I have nothing good to say about this company. Honestly, if I could leave less stars I would. The movers provided a time frame of 7-9am decided to show up at 10am I had to call and find out where they were and they never called me to let me know when they would arrive even prior to this - I had to call them nonstop to figure it out. My inventory sheet was absolutely correct from the estimate infact I had LESS items at the time of move - the mover was absolutely going to charge an additional 500 bucks from the start of the move and mentioned it immediately when he walked in the door.when I asked how the fee was more when I actually had less items on my inventory sheet from the estimate, he claimed because he had to take my beds apart and instead of 42 items I now had 50 - well this is a first and I've done 4 long distance moves in 7 years. They do not include ANYTHING IN THE PRICE. Literally everything has a bill. They do not provide basic plastic wrap for the move - something I literally have never had to pay extra for they demanded that I pay 90 dollars and when I protested the representative hung up on me and told me it was my problem for booking through a third party. Find a mover who does try to scam you - I couldn't even believe the guy taking my queen bed apart and counting those as more items on the truck - um hey genius you are supposed to go through the inventory list with me not after you load everything and second a Queen bed has the same dimensions regardless - worst moving company ever -believe the reviews read more

Buyer Beware I would not recommend this moving company to anyone. Please do your research on long distance movers prior to relocating, unfortunately low balling estimates, that inflate once movers arrive to pick up your belongings leaving you stuck and items arriving weeks later appear to be common practice in the long distance moving company industry. To save yourself the headache and $$ just go with a well known and established company. Stay away from companies that base your estimate on over the phone inventories and stay away from moving brokers that subcontract work to companies such as Home Town Van Lines. This entire industry appears to be very shady based on the other reviews I've read on companies, unfortunately I saw these reviews after I did business with this company. Just a little bit about my experience with this company, my movers were supposed to arrive between 10pm-12 pm, I had to call the company around 11:45 am because I did not get a call from the movers indicating they were close or on their way, well when I spoke to Lucas he gave me an excuse as to why they would be arriving 2 hours later he stated they had to pick up blankets to move my things, ok but when were you going to inform me of this and why did I have to call you to find out they movers were going to be 2 hours late and why should I have to wait 2 hours because you're movers were unprepared, the experience went downhill from there. My belongings were picked up on August 9th and they didn't arrive until August 30th on a move from Maryland to Texas. In conclusion just STAY AWAY from this company. read more

If I was able to give this company a ZERO I would! This is the worst company I have ever dealt with in my entire life. I have come across some bad customer service and bad business practices, however this by far has been the worst! We first were referred to this company by a third party company who were just as bad as this company. The Third party company quoted us a reasonable price and they came off very professional, until this process became a nightmare. The third party company told us we could pay with credit and we would get our furniture in 5-7 business days. Home Town Van Lines then came to pick up the furniture for a move from VA to GA and they gave us a entirely different price that was DOUBLED the cost. They wanted the difference immediately! We called the third party company and they gave us every excuse in the world why the price was DOUBLED and didn't take any accountability for the HUGE mistake. Since our backs were against the wall and we were on a time constraint, we had no choice but to pay it. This alone is bad business practices. These companies should communicate with one another about there pricing structure and not screw over customers! So we made the first half of the payment via credit. Then Home Town Van Lines told us after paying the first payment with credit, we must pay the last half in cash upon delivery. THAT WASN'T VERBALLY DISCLOSED BY THE THIRD PARTY COMPANY. However, they seem to have put this information in fine writing in the middle of the contract! (BAD BUSINESS PRACTICES) When we called the third party company they were so rude and disrespectful. They passed the blame onto Home Town Van Lines, lied about why the cost was doubled, didn't work with us regarding the cost and was just the worst. Once Home Town Van Lines delivered the furniture 8 DAYS LATER, which is AFTER the time we were told, they added an additional $150 to the final cost because of a long walk. They weren't even willing to deduct the $150 long walk fee since they were an ENTIRE DAY LATE. THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER! Please run from this company if you see them.
