Spare Energy Capacity numbers used to keep our 100A service.

As we planned to install an HVAC using a 100A sub-panel, and general guidelines in the City of Mountain View recommend the COSTLY upgrade to a 200A panel, we took Steve Schmidt's HEA.com advice on using our own PGE data to help convince the city to allow us to install the HVAC and KEEP our 100A panel. We used the 5 highest electric energy demand days in the past 30 days to explain in our building permit application, that we have enough spare energy in our 100A sub-panel, and took advantage of an NEC 220.87 exception option. The city permitters accepted our logic, and the building permit was approved. I recommend using your HEA.com HomeIntel data, for anyone electrifying their own home, especially if you want to manage the project costs, by possibly keeping your 100A service panel as-is, to avoid a costly upgrade to 200A service. This is the way to find your spare capacity numbers, and see if this is possible for yourself. And HomeIntel subscription is FREE! The attached HOURLY DETAIL report portion (top) was used in the building permit application explanation (bottom portion of graphic) to share our spare capacity numbers with the city engineers.

Very helpful information to optimize our use of energy. Well worth the time to do the household survey and see the energy use drivers.

Most importantly, finished earlier than planned and only 30 minute no power. Their service was spot on from the time they began. From installing the solar panels to the powerwalls, great overall. Very happy customer!

I'll first say we ordered the solar system one year ago before a certain someone became... more…read morepolitically active. It was great to be able to place the order and complete documents, etc through the Tesla app. It was very convenient to view all the designs, documents, etc right in the app. We ordered the solar system and two Powerwall 3 units. The site assessment, design, and installation went smoothly. The installation took the entire day; the power was only off for maybe 1 1/2 hours. I was immediately able to turn on the system and start producing power and charging the powerwalls but just not export any solar back to the grid. After the installation, a long period of time passed with no news and no inspections scheduled. I thought they'd forgotten about us! Finally the project advisor called and said the county had suddenly changed their requirements, and the powerwalls would have to be moved from the side of the house to the back of the house. Additional weeks passed while Tesla and the county worked out what location would be acceptable. Finally it was confirmed that the back of the house was allowed. It took about a half day to relocate the powerwalls. The power didn't have to be shut off this time. Then over the following weeks there were three separate county inspections. Tesla handled this, and I didn't have to be home as long as they could access the garage. Finally, after passing all three inspections, there was the final utility inspection and installation of the new meter. At last one year later we were able to connect to the grid and sell excess power. It took a long time, but I'm happy with the system. The app is very slick with lots of options and functions, and I love how Tesla monitors the weather with the storm watch feature. I also love how you can enter your utility rate and configure the system to keep you off the grid during peak rate hours. I only wish a certain someone had not gone so off the rails lately...
