Curious about PG&E's HomeIntel program and how it can help to lower my energy bills, I signed up for the program and shared my PG&E data. I was impressed with how they were able to analyze my data and shared with me very helpful insights through the use of graphical charts. I could see where I was using the most electricity, and I found that I had a lot of idle power usage which I could reduce through the use of Smart plugs to set a schedule or to remotely turn some devices off during the night when they are not in use. My HomeIntel energy coach, Greg, has been absolutely incredible. When I followed PG&E's advice to obtain a free energy coach from HomeIntel, I was skeptical that a free service like this would actually be helpful. But as soon as I met with Greg on Zoom, I knew he was the real deal. He was intelligent, easy to talk to, and a great communicator. He helped me, a non-expert in energy use, understand all of the key components of my energy use at home. We began by reviewing some simple tips to reduce my energy use and save some money. He corrected some misinformation I had about hot tub management that will save me some money. But most importantly, Greg quickly identified, through his analysis, that my electric meter was not measuring the excess energy my solar panels were producing. I was surprised since PG&E and my solar contractor both believed they had followed procedure correctly when my panels were installed. Thanks to key information Greg provided to me, PG&E corrected the problem in a manner that was financially favorable to me. I spoke with my HomeIntel consultant for over an hour; he was informative, enthusiastic and super clear in explaining the data. You are also sent a number of detailed reports that help document your usage and trends. I've made a number of small and painless adjustments that have had a decent cumulative effect. Because I made some changes at the same time i swapped out a very old HVAC system, I can't tell which had the most impact, but my electric usage has been about 30% less these past two months. His suggestion vis a vis my hot water heater (putting the recirculation pump on a timer) definitely cut my gas usage by about 50%. read more

As we planned to install an HVAC using a 100A sub-panel, and general guidelines in the City of Mountain View recommend the COSTLY upgrade to a 200A panel, we took Steve Schmidt's HEA.com advice on using our own PGE data to help convince the city to allow us to install the HVAC and KEEP our 100A panel. We used the 5 highest electric energy demand days in the past 30 days to explain in our building permit application, that we have enough spare energy in our 100A sub-panel, and took advantage of an NEC 220.87 exception option. The city permitters accepted our logic, and the building permit was approved. I recommend using your HEA.com HomeIntel data, for anyone electrifying their own home, especially if you want to manage the project costs, by possibly keeping your 100A service panel as-is, to avoid a costly upgrade to 200A service. This is the way to find your spare capacity numbers, and see if this is possible for yourself. And HomeIntel subscription is FREE! I recently did a survey on PG&E's web site to lower my energy use. I was pleasantly surprised to receive an email from Greg P. who works for the company that developed the survey, called HomeIntel. We set up a zoom call, and had about 30-60 minute chat about the results of the survey, and Greg also showed me how to understand the report, which included trends, high use times of day, and which gave me a number of areas that I would work on to reduce unnecessary power use. It goes way beyond turning off the lights when you leave a room, and unplug chargers that are not charging anything, etc. I found Greg to be very personable, clear, and he was able to help me with a number of issues, including being aware that my tankless water heater is programable. This enabled me to make sure we were only heating water when we actually needed it. I shared some of this information with other friends of mine, who live on the Monterey Peninsula in California. It is often cold and damp during the summer here, requiring heating (often) during the summer, instead of requiring AC. They asked me to send them the link to Greg, and to the PG&E survey. I think that they will take the survey and probably save a lot of money on their energy bills. I have already reduced my billing from PG&E by $50/month. I am still looking at other measures I can make to reduce it further. I highly recommend the program. read more

I tried out their service and is was pretty damm good. My hybrid solar/PG&E system fooled it in a few places, and I had to repair the entries, but it was very informative, especially in GAS usage for heating water. Wow, my 400,000 BTU spa heater is quite the energy hog. I'm not surprised as my indoor furnaces (I have 2 of them) only consume about 165,000 BTU between both of them which gives you a concept of the power this thing uses. But, what can you say when your lovely grandchildren come for a visit and want to play in the "Hot Pool" vs. the regular old "Cold Pool" now that the temperature has dropped into the 50's and 60's. I do also, so I can't fault them. But back to why I'm writing this: HomeIntel is a free service, and can have great benefit to almost everybody. Give it a whirl and see if you don't agree. read more
