We had suspected our home had fairly abysmal efficiency, especially for heating and cooling, ever since we'd moved in a couple of years ago, and my husband discovered E3 Elements online and scheduled for them to come out and do the whole house energy audit. I honestly hadn't been aware that this type of service existed (we're first time home owners), but we're so glad it does and that we hired E3 Elements! Having an auditor for whom you are their only customer/client (ie. not attached to another company, such as HVAC or General Contractors) was important to us from the start, and with E3 Elements, that's what you'll get. Not only was Alfredo very candid and comprehensive with his recommendations, he really took the time to explain everything on his report to us, which is really helping us now in negotiating with other companies for the possible upgrades we are looking into. We wanted to replace our gas furnace with a heat pump (for space heating and cooling) - and we were getting conflicting recommendations on how to proceed from various contractors. Luckily, we hired Elements for a home energy audit. Alfredo and team did a great job with the various tests, and explaining the results to us. In particular, we learned that our ducts and the return were not in good shape. Many contractors didn't even look at these when they gave us quotes. So we would have had a nasty surprise later after the new heat pumps were installed - when we would have learned that we needed to replace our ducts and fix the return. With the report Alfredo gave us, we were able to get on the same page with contractors and we love our new heat pump system. Completing a major renovation and unbeknownst to me, needed a HERS report. I had no idea what this was or how to find someone to do this. I typed in "HERS report" into Yelp, requested estimates and after several replies from different HVAC vendors stating they don't perform this testing, I received a friendly message from Elem3nts. Subsequently got on a call with Alfredo who very patiently walked me through what the testing entailed, how to find my title 24 requirements and off we went! We have an old house with old appliances and knew we needed to make some improvements to insulation and the HVAC system, but weren't sure where to begin. On top of that, we're interested in improving our energy efficiency and decreasing our consumption, and needed to find someone who could assess the entire home as a system and make us a comprehensive, well-ordered plan for how to get to where we want to be. And yet, when we have a problem with home discomfort, or high energy bills, what do we do? We go talk to an HVAC person who will sell you HVAC, or WORSE, a Solar person, who will try to convince you that you are GOING TO save $ IN THE LONG RUN. NONSENSE. Sign up with Alfredo. He is a home doctor who looks at the WHOLE SYSTEM, not just one piece in isolation. The analysis of our house was excellent and even the tests and report is only 50% of the value. The main value is in speaking with Alfredo after he has the report ready. He gave us practical advice and ways to save money without breaking the bank. e.g. I was thinking about putting spray foam into my crawl space and Alfredo explained why it isn't the best place to spend $. The insulation contractor he referred to us is excellent as well, and advised us on how to save $ and obtain rebates from PG&E and BayRen. START with energy analysis. Seal up your house. Then get advice on what to fix - Insulation, HVAC, etc. AND THEN AND ONLY THEN look into big $$$$ items like Solar. Couldn't be happier with the service Alfredo and team provide. We've lived in our 100+ year old house for about 3 years now: it's soooo cold during the winter (even with the furnace running non stop) and sweltering on hot days (no AC). We've resorted to blankets and multiple space heaters for the winter; a portable AC unit, 3 ceiling fans, and 4 box fans throughout the house as a bandaid for the summer. I finally decided to do something about it (now that we have our first child) and found that PG&E will provide rebates for doing some of this. This is how I initially came across ELEM3NTS-E3 Alfredo and team did a thorough analysis (really impressive to watch, I suggest observing them as they do the tests, it's shocking to actually *feel* how poorly sealed our house was when they did the blower door test). The tests were thorough, but even more impressive was the one hour follow up call where the results were explained with really helpful analogies and recommendations. The fact that they're an independent company means they don't have any ulterior motives (ie not trying to get you to take on an expensive follow-on remodel with them). Alfredo recommended the best bang for the buck and even provided very reasonable personal suggestions (eg, if you don't intend to live in this house for longer than ~5-10 years, maybe this isn't a good investment for you). Just had my energy assessment done with Elem3nt. The team is very professional, showed up on time and did an excellent job. The downloadable pics and files are very useful. Two tips: 1) Stay around during the process if you can (it takes about 4 hours), because Alfredo might ask you some questions. Also, he can explain what they found on the spot. Sometimes it is just easier to have him point out what the issue is (he will have a phone session with you at later time, but it is easier to have a prior visual image of the issue) 2) Live in the house for more than 12 month. I rented the house for most of last year and year before (I lived in TX for most part of the past two year). Every homeowner should get an energy audit. In most cases, I bet the results would be eye-opening. After moving into my home for a few months, I knew there were some issues. Some rooms felt cold, there were drafts, etc. But when Alfredo & team did his audit and showed me the results, I was blown away. In no particular order: * The central air ducts leaked 30% of the air going through them * The return airflow to the furnace was much less than needed, which starved the furnace and led to increased leakage of conditioned air into the attic. * The furnace was 66% oversized, which led to discomfort and energy waste. * The house leaked air like a sieve (typical for homes of its age). What I especially liked about ELEM3NTS is that it's a independent company doing your audit, not the HVAC company, so they're less likely to be biased in recommending work. And Alfredo will go through the audit with you in detail, lay out all the options, and prioritize them based on potential future energy savings and health considerations. Example #1: He pointed out that the crawl space access in my daughter's room was not weatherstripped and didn't fit right, allowing crawl space air to flow into room, thus explaining the weird odor that I hadn't been able to find the cause of. Example #2: Did you know that energy savings won't really pay back the cost of replacing windows? A much more cost-effective measure to take is to air-seal your home. As one of the other reviewer recommends, I'd also recommend being present during the audit, so you can see for yourself the issues that are uncovered (Alfredo will include photos in the report, but better to see it first hand). After having the audit done, I engaged Residential Heating & Air Conditioning -- see my separate Yelp review -- to install new ductwork and furnace and fix the crawlspace hatch and do air sealing. Alfredo then came back to do the post-work testing, which showed that the new ductwork didn't leak, the airflow of the system was proper, and that air leakage was reduced by 25%. The house already feels more comfortable, and I look forward to seeing lower energy bills this winter. Plus I qualified for a $2000 BayRen energy efficiency rebate. Thanks Alfredo! read more

We live in an older Sunnyvale home and had several cold rooms in the house. As well, our heating bill was getting a little out of control. So, we decided to get an energy audit. Alfredo from Elem3nts was quick to reply to my request, prompt in arriving to discuss our needs, punctual in arriving to do the evaluation, gave a detailed breakdown of our energy situation. We have already implemented many of the changes he recommended. The house has been much more comfortable this summer. We needed the AC much less. I'm not sure what will happen this winter with the heating bill, but I'm hopeful it will be much lower.
