A-1 submitted the lowest bid and it was easy to choose them because they had already installed two systems on our block and our neighbors were very pleased. Sales Manager Kirk communicated really well, providing clear answers to our questions and making no change to the bid when we decided to change the location of the outside unit. Perhaps lucky for us, they were able to install in less than a week. Carrier brand equipment, which uses variable speed technology from Toshiba. A crew of four completed almost all the work in one day. Our existing ducts were not being replaced (both A-1 and another bidder saw no reason to replace them whereas the third bidder wanted to replace them at great cost). Nevertheless, fairly substantial sections of the ducts were indeed replaced in connecting to the new system. All the work was really well done, neatly and with complete clean-up and disposal of the old materials. Ducts were completely insulated, including new insulation on old sections. A-1 also pulled the permit, arranged the needed post-installation duct test and the final City inspection.

I found this company based on all the wonderful Yelp reviews to tune up my old gas furnace- something I do every year before the winter season to ensure optimal maintenance. They came out and immediately refused to do the service citing possible asbestos tape. I asked how this was possible when the last 15 years I've gotten service and have even asked the contractors to do a visual inspection of my system. They weren't sure but said that another employee in the area can come look and give me an estimate for a new system. I thought this was shady and it turns out, I was 100% right. They came later that day and quoted me $26K for a new system not including subcontracting to get the asbestos removed (another $1500). I was told and shown pictures that there was evidence of the same tape inside the duct work. I was told I would get these pictures sent to me with along with the estimate but never received any of them. I got someone to come out and test a sample of said material for $100 which did come out positive for asbestos. However the only asbestos that presented any harm was the tape on the outside of the system. There was no asbestos inside but it was recommended that I do more expensive air testing since Perfect Star said I would not be able to use my heater without the asbestos getting released into the air. Not only was this stressful to hear right before the cold weather, but I was very concerned that over the last decade I had inadvertently put my whole families health in danger using this furnace. Meanwhile, Raymond Kinder texted me a few days later to find out if I was going to move forward with the new unit. I told him asbestos removal was my priority. His response via text was "if they remove asbestos, you will not be able to run that furnace as the gases will not be vented out properly." This was not true. After several weeks of not using my heater and exploring other options to deal with a pretend problem they created for me, I went with Air Quality Testing who charged $540 for an air test. $640 later along with having no use of my heater, I learned that there is no asbestos running through my air or ducts. Perfect Star literally lied to me in order to attempt to get me to drop nearly $30,000 on a new system. Stay away from this company! They do not deserve your business for lying to their customers.

The price I was charged to replace those valves was outrageous--nearly $1,100, and they didn't even bother to repair or replace the sheetrock afterward. For such a basic job, that alone felt excessive. It gets worse. After doing just one load of laundry, my water heater on the second floor started leaking down into the first floor. This had NEVER happened before they worked on my plumbing. I called them immediately, but they couldn't send anyone out until the next day. When a technician finally arrived, I was quoted $4,000 to replace the water heater. That didn't sit right with me, so I decided to get a second opinion. I contacted another company, and the difference was unbelievable. They charged me $2,300 for the same water heater replacement, showed up within an hour of my call, and completed the entire job in about two hours. Out of curiosity, I also asked them what they would have charged to replace the laundry room valves. Their answer? Around $350. So I was charged nearly three times the going rate for a simple repair, and then quoted almost double for the water heater replacement. That's not just overpriced, that feels completely PREDATORY.
