I see some older bad reviews on here, but I'm here to say this place has been very good for at least the last year or more. The country chicken with white rice and gravy is delicious. I love their mac & cheese, sweet potato soufflé, fried okra, mashed potatoes, etc. Servers Rhonda and Susan both do a fine job of keeping your drinks filled and getting you whatever you need. We have been eating lunch here about once a week for 3 + years. The food, for us, is just ok. It is definitely NOT like my grandmother's cooking. We really like the fried chicken livers, and pork chops. The vegetable sides are just ok, some better than others. Cornbread muffins are good. The last few weeks we have been hesitant to return, wife had catfish and within an hour she was throwing up, kind of turned us off. I saw a negative comment about the server Rhonda. She was pretty much the lone constant here, other than her, the servers changed weekly. In my experience a constant 90% turn over in staff has something to do with management. This is one of my favorite go to restaurants. The food is prepared to my liking with slight modifications. It's an extremely clean environment and the food is always fresh!! Cooked to order!! I am sure there is a market for cafeteria style food. This is it, we have not been to the new location (many years since the move). We were going to try uptown wings next door until we walked in and saw the everything menu of wings, Chinese food, burgers and more. Not sure what that was but, we left in favor of eating at Home spun. The restaurant layout design is as if they just piled different stlye tables against the walls for bussing, storage, etc. The menu on chaulk boards on the wall. The food immediately looked very heavy for lunch, and it was. I had the turkey and dressing and it came two sides, I selected of coleslaw and fried okra. It also came with rolls or cornbread, I chose cornbread. She had the vegatable soup with an add on grillled cheese sandwich. Now, looking around the customers appeard to be shall we say, mature ( I am 61 and felt young). I tell you this because the food had little flavor and little to NO seasoning whatsoever. The okra was fried but, also greasy. Very bland and heavy. Our waitress was friendly but, cleary did not speak english and only knew the bare minimum to get by. As another person was trying to explain to her and exclaimed "interpreter please". The food came fairly quick so likley made in bulk and served as ordered. After asking if the Turkey and dressing was good white meat to not one but both waitresses, she brought out a plate of SLOP I would not feed my dog. The dressing was scorched and watery spreading across the plate like a watery mess and the Turkey was 99% shredded dark meat. There were no slices of Turkey. It was all shredded. We will not go back. I don't know why but my taste buds have been in a bad mood lately! Nothing seems to taste as good as it should, or even as good as I remember it last tasting! That being said, Home Spun has never really been that great to me anyway. I first visited this restaurant way back in 2005 when they were in a different location just down the road. A friend of a friend whom ate here all the time brought me for my first visit. I thought the food was okay back then, but I was not in any way motivated to return. Fast forward 13 years and I've passed the new location multiple times. They seem to have a healthy amount of business and I thought to myself: "why not give them another try?" So I did, and guess what? I still thought it was just okay! But in the interest of being a thorough yelper, I came back yet again for a third visit just a few weeks later and guess what? It was still just okay. Back in 2005 I had meatloaf that I would have classified as unremarkable. Can't remember the sides, but they too were nothing I committed to long term memory. On my second recent visit I tried the baked chicken, which I would rate 3.5 stars and the candied yams a 4! However, the creamed corn was highly disappointing, conversely earning it 2 stars. It was so creamy it looked like the porridge I imagine when I think of the story of Goldie Locks and the Three Bears. It was like soupy grits with corn bits mixed in. Still, the baked chicken and candies yams gave me a little confidence to return, hoping for a meal worthy of yelping about! On my last return visit I tried the catfish. I LOVE catfish, but don't particularly like catfish served whole. I would much rather have it as a fillet... but even that doesn't matter to me if it is properly seasoned and nicely cooked. This was not! Topping off the experience were "meh" mashed potatoes and "I could have done without them" sweet potato soufflé. SERVICE Not bad, but not great. I think this is the type of place that puts greater energy into serving their regulars. Everyone else is just extra roughage. NOTE: I was tickled by the hand written menu board with a few misspellings during one visit that no one seemed to notice. FINAL THOUGHTS It's a solid place to get a decent meal if you are looking for substance or if you're the type that "eats to live". Nothing is particularly awful, and nothing is particularly outstanding (at least not that I have sampled). But if you are the "live to eat" type like me, the food here is not going to make you crave multiple visits or give you that "OMG... this is so good" foodgasm experience. 3 stars overall because the pricing is so reasonable you can't really even get mad if you don't like something! 2018/71 read more

I stopped here several times on Saturday and Sunday afternoons while traveling home from the Cumming area only to find the restaurant closed. I finally looked up the hours and was surprised to see they are only open 11am - 7:30pm Monday - Friday. With the hours in mind while traveling to Lake Lanier I attempted to stop in for dinner at 6pm on a Thursday. Closed. If you lived your culinary life in a school cafeteria then I might give you a pass on that. Usually just an average home cooking place, in fact it used to be a little questionable. Lately, they have come alive. I ordered the fried tilapia ( never had it fried before) and large limas and sweet potatoes. Whoa! I now dream about that fried tilapia. It was out of this world good. Don't know what they used to bread it but it was awesome. Veggies are good now as well. They now bring out bread ( yeast rolls and yummy cornbread) for you to munch on while waiting for your food. Home Spun Restaurant is not run by the original owners anymore. The owner should hire someone who can cook country cooking. I quit eating here when they put water in the mashed potatoes with no butter or salt. Most of the food is not chilled or heated properly. The restaurant serves locals that cannot travel far for food. We came in to try the restaurant since they are so close to us. When we walked in no one greeted us and we sat ourselves like the sign says and heard someone say they would be with us. Another group came after us and they got greeted right away and were very nice to them. We waited for a while and our order was not taken but the big group that walked in after us did get theirs- they did have a different friendlier waitress. I understand the waitress might have been busy but a simple " I'll be with you in a sec" or something like that would have been understood. There isn't anything spectacular about this place. However, if southern style comfort food is what you're after, this is where you can get it, every day. They have a set menu for each day of the week and sometimes have additional offerings available, which they put up on their chalkboards. Today, the beef tips (served over rice) were delicious. The sweet tea is always perfect. And my server today, Bailey (sp?), was a delight. Rarely do I get actual service with a smile at this establishment, but she put on a radiant smile for each customer. Ok so this place is the bomb- food wise. We frequented the old location and were overjoyed when they reopened. Well let me just say this- they clearly didn't realize how much we all missed them. They ran out of food the first day they were open! I won't go overboard on the details but the service with this place always has been a problem. No one is ever rude per se, but something is lacking. For such a quaint country place, shouldn't sweet Southern hospitality go hand in hand? They need more people for one. Also if you're not going to have a hostess then for Pete's sake spend a little money and put up a "seat yourself" sign! We knew that's the kind of place since we often ate at the old spot, but how would newcomers know that? Anyways the food was as always AMAZING and the sweet tea as great as ever. It is the sweetest tea I've ever tasted. Seriously you may want to get half unsweet if you're not a fan of really sweet tea. I always get a veggie plate and my hubby loves the country fried steak. Prices are excellent for servings and quality. One young girl (forgot her name) was our server day 1, and she was BUSTING her tail. We gave her a 40% tip because she was clearly doing her best. It's not her fault there weren't more severs. She deserves a raise. I just want this place to succeed because the food is hands down some of the best southern cuisine I've ever had and we love supporting local business. I get they are a mom and pop operation, but I really think they ought to hire more people and have a customer service seminar. I will say the second time back was 10x better than opening day. Worst experience I have ever had in a place of business. I sat in the restaurant for 30 mins and not one person even offered me a cup of water although the restaurant only had 11 tables occupied and 5 servers servicing them. Eventually, I got up and brought it to the employees attention prior to leaving. If these servers aren't trained, this business will not last. Good luck on your visit. I hope you have plenty of time to waste because as empty as it is in there it's obvious they don't care to build a client base. Hopefully, they'll acknowledge you. Best fried catfish I have found in or around Atlanta. Great friendly servers. We go once a week and have never been disappointed.

Almost everything about our experience was awful. The food was terrible. The chicken was especially dry and bland; the vegetable sides were of canned food quality. Service was slow and the server seemed disinterested in us. She also didn't know the menu very well, which is actually understandable, considering the menu offers zero pictures or descriptions of the food. There was no music in the background, just silence and the occasional sound of cooking. HomeSpun's ambiance was tired and lacking in interest; the country diner decor was severely outdated. Was sad when they closed and counted down the days to their reopening in the new location. Since reopening, the service is horrible!! I've given them 2 chances and both times I waited 45 minutes or more for my take out order. The staff is soooo unfriendly! And the food was just meh. I was on a quest for cornbread and found Homespun. I actually made an even bigger find! Their fried catfish is amazing! I also had the creamed corn and fried okra. Both great! One of my favorites was the hush puppies. They taste just like my Mom's. Which in 46 years I've yet to find. Nice service too! This is place is awesome especially if your are looking for a ma and pop restaurant. We had like 8 plates for lunch at the office. So we called the orders in. And the greeter was nice and had patience. When they food got to us it was great I had the veggie plate. And everything was so good. Definitely will be going back here again. This is our 4th time here and every time we come here, we always hope service would improve, it never does. The food however is good so if u don't mind the slloooowww service, then this is a place to go. Ever since they moved and grew in space, service has dropped considerably and stayed down. It's sad because we always love this little place. Today we walked in and seated ourselves per the sign. The place was full but there are a few uncleared tables. We seated ourselves at one of the uncleaned booth and after a few minutes, a couple seated in the other booth. After waiting for 5 mins, the couple that came after us got served first and so we waited. Still no one came around until another 5 mins passed. we asked if anyone was going to clean our table or served us. Finally a lady came up and took our orders and it took another over 15 mins for the food to arrive. I still love their whole catfish and food. The food is tasty with generous portion at reasonable cost. I hope they will improve on their service and wait time. @ 7:25PM Thursday 3/23/17 Was asking a question about an item on the menu and the server cut me off before I can fully ask.. Server was just rude all around.. Brought us over microwaved rolls. Went to open the butter it spilled. That was microwaved as well. I know some restaurants have strict policies on kids menu age, but don't go in the back of the kitchen area after you took my order and out loud where I can here you complaining before coming at me with charging as an adult. Yes I heard every word you said. Or if you are going to charge for an adult plate, it clearly says on the menu two sides. I had to argue that clearly because they were going to give my child a child plate for adult price. Anyways if you do have a strict policy about the child menu age, just politely say it when you are first addressed with it. Plain and simple.... Anyways we were ignored the rest of the time there and half of the adult plate did go in a to go box because of my child's small appetite . Had to ask another server for the to go box because our server was ignoring me. In the process the server told our server we needed a to go box and out loud in a mocking laugh she was talking about the adult plate, which was across the room. She dropped the box quickly and dispersed before I could say anything. JS!!!!!!!! I'm not just some complainer, I've been in the food industries almost all my life and yes servers do live off tips mostly. Even ran a few restaurants, served, and cooked in my 40 years. I rarely ever complain, tipping 2% or more, or never expect free food from complaining due to I know how most people who work in the food service work to survive.
