We were going through a ruff patch with our pup, Boomer, so a couple of our friends recommended Dr. Hunt at Homestead Animal Clinic. We were pawsitively at the end of our leash by the time we called, and Dr. Hunt's team was ready to jump in and help. Boomer, (our puggle), had been coughing something terrible for a few days, and we were worried that it was pretty serious. He sounded like a cat coughing up a hairball or an old man with a very deep smokers cough. He was hacking it up at all times of the day and night, and it became very disturbing! Since we really couldn't make heads or tails of it, we decided we needed an expert opinion. When calling in to make an appointment, his staff was very friendly and thorough, and set us up to be greeted in the back when we arrived, just as a precaution to ensure that he didn't spread whatever sickness he had to other pups. Good call! Turns out, he had a common case of kennel cough and it was nothing really serious at all. We were dreading and preparing to talk about the option of a payment plan to pay for whatever expensive tests, x-rays, and medicine he was going to prescribe, but were shocked to hear that he wasn't going to nickel and dime us for anything! Fur real??? He gave us great pointers on how to handle the situation and even went above and beyond to address another issue with his ears that he noticed.. WOW! It was mind beagle-ing! We realized that Dr. Hunt really cares about animals and is honest, and caring, and everything you would want your vet to be! Seriously, Dr. Hunt and his staff are leaders of the pack when it comes to caring for your fur babies. Homestead Animal Clinic certainly met our needs for Boomer and then some. What a relief to know that we won't have to sniff around for an honest vet the next time Boomer is feeling under the weather. Update from 2020 experience: I left this vet. Was treated so rudely when my dog got sick and they wouldn't see her because they hadn't seen her recently even though they saw my other dog a few months prior. They wouldn't even recommend where I should go with Covid and everything. I'd been going to Homestead with my 10 pets for almost 10 years. My dog ended up having cancer that I think Dr. Hunt missed even though I brought her there for eating problems twice. Just a horrible experience! read more

Dr. Hunt cares about the animals. One of the things that I notice right away is that he will actually talk me out of doing unnecessary things which has never happened before at any other vet. I do flyball with my dogs and I consider my dogs to be part of my family. If something isn't working right I take them in right away. Sometimes a bit to soon. He looks at each situations and always tells me what he would do if it was his dog. For example I have a 9 year old border collie. His teeth aren't pearly white anymore and I thought I probably needed to get them cleaned. Dr. Hunt took one look at them and told me to hold off. Sure they are not perfect but just cause there not doesn't mean it's time for dental work. There has also been a couple times where I have taken my border collie in because of a limp. He knows when to X-ray and when to hold off. After taking my dog in to VCA 24 hour Emergency care he gave me his opinion and told me what was really going on. When my husband and I took our little girl to the vet, we were preparing for the worst. However, a surgery later, our little girl is almost back to her playful self! The office was so polite and caring. The vet we saw, Dr. Hunt, was so compassionate with us and explained everything about what Nala was experiencing and how she got her infection in a manner that we could understand. Not only that, when we returned with Nala on her surgery date, she wagged her tail for the staff! She was loved and seeing her loving them, made it that much more comforting. Honestly, I am SHOCKED at all the positive reviews for Doctor Hunt. We took our sick Greyhound to see him. We were kept waiting for 45 minutes after our scheduled appointment time. No one came to see how we were doing and finally had to look for a tech and ask for a blanket so our dog could lay down. When the doctor finally came in, there was no apology or acknowledgement of the wait. He treated us with no respect and was not friendly with our dog. I would never go back there. read more

I went to Homestead several years ago because I had heard good things about Dr. Hunt.  He was ok for several years when I  didn't have any issues with my dogs.  When my beloved Jadie, who had heart disease for about two years, started refusing to eat or drink, we knew we had to make that heartbreaking decision to put her down.  When I called Homestead we we're told they were too busy and it would be another week before they can put her down.  I begged because I saw how my poor baby was suffering and I couldn't bear to see her suffer one more day.  We had to find another vet to put her to sleep. Even though I wasn't very happy with Homestead, I continued taking my other two dogs to Dr. Hunt.  Then about 6 months ago,  my border collie was having trouble getting up off the floor.  I would help her up and noticed that her front paws would buckle and she'd fall again.  I thought she was having a stroke.   I rushed her to VCA hospital since it was a Sunday only to be told by them she had a neurological problem and they wanted to send her to the dog neurologist.   I told them I wanted my vet to see her first.   The next morning I called Homestead only to be told again, they were too busy to see her.  They did suggest, after my insistence, to drop her off and when Dr. Hunt had a moment, he'd check her.  A few hours later, I get a call from Dr. Hunt telling me there was nothing wrong with her and if she had gotten into Marijuana.  I was insulted.  How dare he assume I have Marijuana in my home.   Anyway,  I brought her back home and called the dog neurologist to get an appointment.   They couldn't see her for two weeks.  Meanwhile, I would watch my poor dog fall face first into her water bowl, fall trying to go to the bathroom and constantly having to pick her up.  It was getting so bad, she started refusing to get up.  I watched as she kept getting worse and started refusing to eat or drink.   After a few days I couldn't handle it anymore, I called the dog neurologist again and begged if they can see her earlier.   They had a cancelation and we were able to get her in.  They told me that it could be a number of things so they wanted to do some tests to rule things out before doing a $3,700 MRI.  They put her on steroids which helped tremendously.   She was able to walk and stand again. They did a valley fever test and it came back positive. All of this was caused by valley fever.  I don't know why Dr. Hunt never even considered this or to do any other tests.  It took having to take her to a dog neurologist to find out.  Needless to say,  I won't go to Homestead anymore.   They failed my dogs twice. read more

I just want to comment on a review left by Diana. Dr Hunt and Homestead may have bumped up pricing and more than once, but, even now, their office visit fee is still $10-$60 less than any other Vet office within 60 miles from me, at least. I drive 52 minutes to take my pets to Homestead because Dr Hunt has shown me time and time again that his heart is in it 100%. You see it in his face, hear it in his voice and his staff is the same way. A person becomes a Vetrinarian because they want to help animals, right? But these days, more and more, you find that it has become more about the money and less about the animals. Not with Dr Hunt!!!!! He has always gone over options, explained what and why is necessary immediately, and what can possibly wait and why it can, even in potentially critical situations. He understands the emotional pain pet owners go through and how difficult it can be financially. And the decisions we have to make as pet owners sometimes because of financial issues, can cause pain and guilt, etc and he understands that, as well. I truly believe he wants to provide the best possible care while being mindful of that and doesn't suggest or expect anything that isn't absolutely necessary at that time. The issue at hand is his focus and that's what keeps me coming back. Then we can take care of the regular check up findings as they come. That's what helps us as pet owners be able to take the best care of our pets and keep them healthy and happy. If the medication is less expensive somewhere else, they will call it in for you, or I'm sure, write a hard prescription and you can take it elsewhere. But, as far as having a Vet who cares, who's average costs are much lower than most others, and a staff that is as helpful as you find there, it's a no brainer!!!! As long as Dr Hunt is practicing and homestead is in business, I don't care if I have to drive 5 hours to get there, my pets will NEVER go anywhere or to anyone else!!! read more

This was a great vet for about 5 years. Then they started to get money hungry. All they care about is the money. If you want your pet well taken care of don't ever go here. Very sad the place has gone downhill very fast. Almost all new staff too. Dr Hunt and and his staff are everything you hope for when you have to take your pets to a vet. I had just gotten my two Great Danes back after a six month battle with a family member, and they were in terrible shape. 3" toenails, dirty and smelled like a cat hoarders house. Their pads were shredded with Keratinocytes ( I think that's what it's called). My 11 yr old female had a softball size lump on her hip and was limping badly. I immediately called Homestead when I got them home, as I had been there with my 5 yr old when she was a pup and remembered I really liked Dr Hunt. I told them I needed them to see a vet as soon as possible so they got me in the next day. When we arrived, and he saw the dogs, he began to asked the right questions, because of their condition I'm guessing, but didn't show any judgement. He also asked how long I had them back, which was less than 24 hrs, and I realized at that point that he was making sure that he didn't need to involve someone like animal welfare. He didn't say anything, of course, but it is of my opinion that if he thought these dogs were going to go back to a bad situation he would have done what he thought was right for the animals. I absolutely respect that!!! It is very clear that Dr Hunt is in it for his love for animals and NOT just for the money. Right up off the bat, I noticed how reasonable their prices were compared to almost every other vet I've ever seen in my lifetime. He talked to me about options and what is necessary and what may not be. They did x-rays on Dixie's lump right away and do her and Vita's nail trim at the same time. When the images were ready, Dr Hunt took me to the imaging screen to personally view the x-rays and showed me a large mass. And when he had to confirm what we both had suspected and tell me my beautiful 11 yr old Great Dane had bone cancer, he was straight forward and very compassionate. Since Dixie was still very active, we talked about time and pain management and what I may see, and what she may go through as the cancer progresses. There was no rush to gets us out of there, though they seemed very busy. I would have thought that this diagnosis would have meant immediate loss of my dog. But, Dr Hunt assured me that at minimum I could still have a few months with my girl and maybe even longer. And when the time does come, And quality of life is in question, I know that they will make the process as easy as it can be for both Dixie and me. I will always take my pets to Homestead Animal Clinic from now until he retires, though I hope he never does!! I have been searching for a Vet since I have moved to Phoenix over 5 years ago. Dr. Hunt and Homestead are my 4th Vet. I have found my forever Vet! I took my 2 dogs (Labs) in for their yearly visit, and has some concerns about the older one. Dr. Hunt started with my younger dog, and he was very good. Jazzy has serious issues with Vets, she barks and gets very upset. Dr. Hunt handle her just as I would expect a Vet to handle a nervous dog, and got everything done. I have had another Vet look at me and ask what he was supposed to do with my nervous girl. Maybe I'm a little looney but I would think a Vet would know how to deal with my nervous dog. Then we moved on to Jewel, who has had a bunch of lumps appear all over her body. He felt them and discussed that he thought they were probably just fatty deposits, but he would like to check them. Dollar signs we adding up in my mind at the thought of having him check her lumps, but this is my baby, so I said No Problem. He took a syringe and made a slide right there for each of the 2 major lumps. He came back in about 10 mins and said one was just fat, but if I had time, he would like to look at the second one again. Once again, I said no problem. Five minutes later, he came back and said that one was fat too. I left the Vets office paying $130 for both dogs, and of that $29 was for him looking at the Lumps. A Vet who isn't in it just for the money and how much he can get out of each owner?!?!?!? NO WAY! This is a rare Vet, he doesn't have the greatest hours, but he is absolutely worth working around, your pet will love him and you Wallet will definitely like him too! read more

We are extremely happy with Homestead since switching to them about 6 months ago. Granted, I honestly didn't have a problem with the other vet we had been using, but I didn't really have a reason to be loyal either, and they tended to be kind of expensive. A friend recommended Homestead and Dr. Hunt has been fantastic! First, Dr. Hunt is very down to Earth. He explains things in ways that are easy to understand and doesn't push extra services. He never comes across as "doing it for the money". For example, with one medicine he mixed for us, he told us to save the leftover because the ear problems are normal and the medicine will keep, then to use that before calling in for more. Second, he cares about his patients. I called this morning and while the phone was ringing realized they didn't open for another hour. But then Dr. Hunt himself answered the phone, answered my questions, and even scheduled the appointment we needed. How many doctors or vets do you know would answer the phone before hours and before all their staff was there, let alone be able to book the appointment! All in all, Dr. Hunt is a great vet, a great business owner, and a great person. We now have a reason to be loyal! Small update 3/17/2015: My son's cub scout tiger den needed a "go-see-it" at a vet so my wife called Homestead. As far as I know, they had never done this before but still gave the boys an AMAZING tour! One of the employees had her lab there and let them listen to his heart, gave a tour of the facility, and showed what they did with animals. They boys loved it and still talk about it a month later! Dr. Hunt was my pets' vet for about a year prior to my moving out of state. He diagnosed my Jack Russell, Hollywood, with Valley Fever during that time and took amazing care of not just him, but my other two pups as well. I ended up moving out of state and have gone back and forth between CA and NV, and it still amazes me how awesome he is every time I've contacted him throughout the past year. Valley Fever isn't very common in Las Vegas or the area of CA that I frequently visit, so since the vets in these areas aren't too familiar with the disease, they run the blood work and the results get faxed to Dr. Hunt and HE STILL takes the time to go over the results and call in my pup's prescription, even though he isn't receiving any of the profits from the exam or lab tests! I also absolutely love the entire hospital team, from the front desk to the techs and assistants, I can't say enough good things about JennaVee, Jen, Marlena and John! How can I further describe Dr. Hunt? Well how about this: his dedication to his clients and patients no matter how far is absolutely and incredibly amazing! As for the negative ratings that people have given this place... Well, I'm sorry but they must have called or visited the wrong clinic. I have first hand seen the way they all treat other clients and pets, even gone and seem things in action in the back area hospital where all the action goes down, and they literally rock it.
