Really a 3.5 star, but had to round up. The food was delicious but the portions were small. And the "star" of each dish, like the "octopus" pasta, was really more of an honorable mention, ie the pasta to tasty bits ratio was too high. Draft beer and wine list were limited, but good selections. Two small plates, two entrees, 2 beers and 2 wines was $125 with tip. Seemed a bit high? All that said, would go back. We love this place. Our daughter attends a nearby college, and we have come here ever since she started as a student a few years ago. Now, in these uncertain times, we decided to go just for pick up. We were so pleased that their food is still just as good as ever. So happy to support a place that we hope to go and dine inside of again sometime soon! I've been here twice. Both meals were excellent. The food is vegetable-forward, flavorful and creative. The bolognese paired beautifully with the 2010 Casar Mencia. Other dishes we had: octopus, kale salad, duck and ratatouille. Lived them all the only detractors were the snap peas (too stringy). read more

We're back a year later and happier than ever in this cozy restaurant. One dish after the other was flavorful and delicious. We started with comfort food meatballs and ricotta with eggplant crostini. Then we all shared a better than traditional Caesar, mushroom risotto with the slightest hint of lemon, blue cheese stuffed pasta with chicken confit, cacio pepe, bolognese, campanelli with butternut squash and brown butter. I came to homestead because I had a gift card. I was not impressed with the space or decor. It had a cold feel to it...weird when the name is homestead. The acoustics as well made it hard to have a conversation. We started our meal off with the octopus and focaccia bread. The bread cost 3$ and was very dense and salty. The octopus was very well cooked and the dish itself was well balanced, with notes of acidity from farm fresh carrots. Presentation was a bit lacking, though. I've tried this place a couple of times because I like the space, concept and atmosphere. The staff is very pleasant and friendly and the food and drink, that I've tried are very good. Unfortunately the prices are way too high based on the portion size. My $17 pasta dish was like a half sized portion. Also, the vegan options are very limited and there isn't much of a desire to accommodate. I paid $42 (including tip) for one drink and a small bowl of pasta that contained no meat or fish. A total disgrace. My friend and I arrived to a sparsely filled restaurant and virtually not a single customer at the bar. We sat down at the bar rail in the window, the waiter arrived promptly, made a big deal about the bartenders winning a national competition for their drinks, explaining the proximity to the local farms from which they source and yada yada. Great! He recommended a cocktail, I ordered it, my friend ordered a glass of wine. The bartenders were milling around, nothing pressing appeared to be going on. No large parties in the house. No one was in the weeds. The waiter then returned about 2 minutes later saying there had been "some sort of mixup with another order" and that it would be "at least TEN MINUTES" for our drinks to arrive but would we like to order our dinner? Seriously?? I suggested I'd skip the mixology masterpiece in favor of a glass of wine. Nope. Apparently, no one on staff (a manager??) was "allowed" to pour two glasses of wine. I'm sure the food here is wonderful. We were preparing to order three courses. I write a food column for a newspaper in RI and am well aware of the challenges being faced by the industry and am entirely sympathetic but this was without a doubt the most bizarre story I've ever heard. We left, went next door, had a decent if not fantastic meal but guess what? No food is so good that a restaurant should feel entitled to abject rudeness and when it comes down to it, I'll choose the decent food and some semblance of logical, sensible service over this absurdity any day. Their pasta dishes are on the smaller side as the menu suggests but the quality and presentation is fantastic. This place has the best brunch in town by far. I don't drink but it's also the only brunch in Northampton that serves bloody Mary's and mimosa. For dinner, I recommend asking about the specials. One of my favorite places to eat in Noho. We've brought about 20 people there, and everyone has been wowed by how consistently good everything is. We tried Homestead at the recommendation of friends and had one of the best meals we have had in a while. My husband and I sat at the bar and had a great view of the open kitchen (a plus for us as restaurant people!). We had the octopus appetizer which was charred to perfection. Not at all rubbery or overdone and then share 2 pasta dishes. The bologna was incredible- I mean really incredible- fresh, well seasoned, and prepared with obvious care. The bar tender recommended excellent cocktails and was lovely to chat with. We found the atmosphere comfortable and enjoyed the music selections. We wandered into Homestead while visiting Northampton for the weekend and had a great experience! Two of us split the foccacia, two pasta dishes, the cookie plate and vanilla gelato and all were delicious. The pasta portions were not huge, but they were rich and I honestly appreciated not leaving feeling stuffed. The house wine was also great especially for its price! Our server could not have been better and we enjoyed the atmosphere inside. Didn't notice any sort of echo-y problem like some other reviewers. I have eaten at this restaurant four times. the first three times were exceptional. I have been raving about this place since my first visit. Last night was the exception. The Bolognese was not as good as usual. We ordered the chicken. When we cut into it was red and uncooked. When we sent it back, the chef told our server that it was brined and it should look that way. We left the restaurant. The other blemish on our evening was when we asked our server for a sample of wine. We did not like it and ordered something else. A charge showed up for $8. which was removed when we complained. This has to be one of the best meals I've ever had! The appetizer Kuri Squash Hummus was delicious and the presentation was well done. We had a party of four and decided to split two dishes four ways. The whole roasted young chicken was flavorful and seasoned to perfection. The hunk of meat was tender! The menu could use more more commonplace terms, which would seem less pretentious, and less odd when the waitstaff can't pronounce the items well. The training of servers is lacking- many rough edges in their style. The open kitchen got downright rowdy about 1/2 hour before closing, with a few customers still there. the arugula salad was overdressed with vinegar. the polenta and shrimp dish wasn't seasoned well. the chicken was nicely done but the cranberries on the side were very tart. you only need a few of those cranberries. not a whole pile of them. overall the food was just ok. fresh pasta dishes seem better. but for that price i expect it to be much more impressive. service was excellent though and ambiance is nice too. read more

Looks beautiful inside, the space is incredibly loud though. The kitchen staff din was pounding off the walls. Our server was super sweet and a bit awkward, but she did a good job. Hummus was very flavorful, but a touch grainy. Cacio di Pepe with corn was good but needed something, the homade pasta was really good. Pork belly itself was spot on,lentils that came with were pedestrian and too salty. Kale salad was pretty good, the grapes were pickled well, dressing was lost to the flavor of the kale. Steak with smoky tomatoes, and shredded brassicas was fantastic, all elements made sense and tasted good together. Same with mango sorbet dessert, macaroon was perfect consistency to eat the way it was presented. Wine list was heavily Italian (I work for an Italian importer, so this makes me happy) and looked like someone actually cared when they picked the things on it, which is always appreciated. Had a great experience here! The staff were all really friendly, and the food was excellent. We had some of the housemade pasta dishes, no regrets. The menu is creative and the ingredients are fresh. The butternut cavetelli is especially good...the chicken is so flavorful and just melts apart in your mouth. All the sauces are spot on. Went out for a weeknight dinner and was uncertain about the place. As it turned out, the staff was knowledgeable and inviting, the plates fresh, interesting and delicious. I enjoyed the duck breast small plate. Tender duck surrounded by a tasty combination of vegetables and fruit including rhubarb. Nice. My son had a bluefish/lobster special and literally lifted the plate to finish the sauce. Both dishes were prepared with interesting and well-balanced ingredients. The atmosphere is rustic and welcoming, with wood plank floors, wood tables, and a beautiful wood bar. The room is spacious. Parking is easy with a public lot 2 doors down. The menu is truly unique. I had a Hen of the Woods (a large and rare mushroom) small plate, prepared with a delicate sauce. The homemade pasta was perfectly al dente, with small clams in the shells and a light, flavorful sauce. The pork belly dish was delicious. House red wine was quite good. We ate at Homestead Restaurant Friday evening August 10th as we were passing through Northampton and this restaurant had been recommended to us. We enjoyed our experience thoroughly. Food was delicious and artfully presented. All staff were wonderful and helped us with our selections, and didn't rush us at all. We enjoyed the small plates and were able to try many different dishes. As this summer has seen very warm weather - we particularly enjoyed the watermelon gazpacho - so refreshing! But really - I don't think you could go wrong with anything on this creative menu. Great wine selections as well! read more

We've enjoyed watching the transformation of this place over the last year. The food and menu seem to get more solid and the waitstaff friendlier and well informed as time goes on. Now for the "bad".-- As some reviewers have previously mentioned... the acoustics are very bad. We can say that we would come here more regularly and with happiness if they invested in sound panels and fixed the horrific acoustics! I'd also love for the air conditioner to be less freezing... and for there to be some added "warmth" to the decor making Homestead more homey. We love the seasonal, well thought out menu and shared portion dishes. Almost there Homestead... keep it up! read more
