Oh my! Where to begin. After cycling on a nearby trail we wanted a quiet and pleasant atmosphere for lunch. The receptionist, a new hire wanted to put us out on a sunny uninviting deck out back instead of the front entry shady area with plenty of open spots. The waiter was a much affected individual who deigned to wait on us, forgetting to take our drink order and deliver utensils. The pita bread and hummus was swimming in a spicy oil to the point of dripping. The chicken salad sandwiches were ground up chicken with grated carrot and whatnot, none of which was palatable. The smashed burger was swimming in aioli sauce and smothered with a crushed candied bacon. The chef and or staff need proper schooling. Sorry! Extremely disappointed. While in Amherst visiting my nephew at a nearby university, he asked to go out to a "nice" dinner. I looked at places in the area and decided to drive by the Inn on Boltwood. The exterior captures the New England charm you'd expect. Parking was easy, on-street, and signage easily led us from the entrance of the inn to the restaurant. We were seated in the bar area where you could hear the bartender making conversation with everyone who sat there, while simultaneously making drinks for servers to run to their tables. Both of us felt like having steak, so when our menus were presented, we went straight for it! My nephew had the steak frites, which also came with green beans, and I had the filet mignon, accompanied by mashed potatoes and green beans. The bread basket was generous and the fresh whipped butter divine. Both steaks were cooked as ordered and the quality exceeded the pricepoint for our meals. For dessert, my nephew ordered ice cream and I opted for the affogato. Generous portions for both. Overall, this is a place to try either when looking for an evening out, a special occasion, or just because you feel like to enjoying the comfort of a New England Inn with the culinary options of city chef. We wanted to love this place but didn't. First, martini 101 - it should be very cold and not vermouth forward. I sent it back. The replacement was better. Food: we ordered steak frites, lobster bucatini, and gagarelli lemon artichoke spinach and pasta. Steak frites 6/10. Steak not cooked well. Uneven. Frites were good. Lobster pasta. Sauce was meh. Lobster scarce. Garg pasta - wash your spinach! Crunchy dirty spinach ruined the dish. Do better. Prices are premium so food should be too. read more

We paid a lot to be insulted by management. Last Sunday my wife and I dined on the porch. We dined there at least four times in the past year. Our table was as requested and a wonderful familiar server took excellent care of us. We ordered the Restaurant Week menu and added a bottle of wine and two salads. Our cold asparagus soup was delicious. Unfortunately, the entree was poorly prepared. The fish was badly overcooked, and the vegetables were burnt. When our server came by to ask how everything was, we answered honestly that the fish was very dry. We added that we had had much better fish dishes there before but it was fine. Our server went to his manager to share our answer to his question of how everything was. The manager came to our table and said "I understand that there is a problem here". We showed him our plates so he could see for himself. He asked if we wanted the kitchen to redo our entree and we said no. When we were presented with the bill our server apologized because his manager said there would be no adjustment. We never requested an adjustment! We never asked to speak with a manager! My wife and I are not con artists looking to get freebees. We simply gave an honest answer to the question asked of us. If we had a problem that needed to be corrected we would have made a request to do so. The fish was very dry and not very enjoyable. When asked if we wanted a replacement we said no thank you. We never asked for anything. We chalked this up to a less than stellar meal at a restaurant where we had enjoyed stellar meals in the past. I sat at the bar because all tables were full and am so glad I did! The bartenders are responsive, friendly, and great at their job! I had the clam chowder and steak frites, both of which were good. The steak was cooked well, but the rest of the dish was doused in so much butter it made it difficult to appreciate the flavor of the steak. I know a lot of steak frites are buttered, but this was overpowering. Similarly, the clam chowder was good, but the deep-fried oyster crackers that came in it infused the chowder with an oily flavor and detracted from the clams. With both dishes, I like to see the star (steak, clams) shine, so was a little disappointed. Otherwise, love the ambiance here!! 30 Boltwood is best for cocktails and appetizers. Their wine list is nice too. Service and atmosphere get high marks. Cheese plate is great with pickled veggies and try the bacon wrapped dates. They are fried meat candy. Beyond that, entrees are often disappointing. The menu changes and we've tried a few things - but usually regret it. Most recently, the fried chicken was undercooked and under seasoned. The Wagyu burger was so greasy/buttery it was gross. For an amazing Wagyu burger see my review of the Colgate Inn! WOW! Where do I start? Service: every single staff member was very welcoming and seemingly connected with us in a personable level. Our server David N. was so incredibly nice and accommodating. His way of communication and connecting was something to be looked up to. Ambiance: we opted for the outdoor seating near the main entrance. The seats were very cozy and comfortable and the gas fire fixtures were a great addition to the overall feel. Food: I had their Reed Farms Duck dish and my wife had their Red Farms Chicken dish. Both were stellar in taste and presentation. We may have found our new favorite spot! Highly recommended. read more

Let me start off by saying we love staying a The Inn on Boltwood. It's our go to spot when we drop our kiddo off at UMASS. We also love that they have a restaurant right on premise. Normally the food and drinks are solid. And service. Last night not so much. Ordered baked Brie. Came out ice cold when we cut through it. They took it back and tossed the cut Brie back in oven. Came back again. Warmer but not remotely gooey. And they slathered too much honey. For dinner my husband always gets the steak frites. The steak was a mini fatty sirloin that was though and flavorless. With chopped broccoli that looked like baby food. My statler chicken, had non crispy flabby skin. Cold wild rice and cold carrots. We at paid and asked for two paper plane cocktails to drink outside. The bartender I swear was in something. Not only did he dump ingredients in his shaker, vs measuring and mixing, but there was so much aperol that it looked and tasted like a Shirley Temple with whiskey. We stayed at the Boltwood and had to eat at 30 boltwood and because of schedule we had to eat here for 3 meals. We got in late and arrived at 9:30 on a Thursday evening. The waiter, a nice man, was cordial even though we were one of the last (but not THE last guests for the evening). The restaurant says open until 10. Last service is 10pm. The food (Korean chicken wings, steak frites, and salmon) was passable for 9:30pm meal after a lingering day of travel. Not the best meal I've had but typical "pub" quality. The wings were sweet and doughy and the steak was the worst piece of bavette I've ever seen, but decently cooked and we ate it after our long flight and drive. Our next meal was brunch on Friday morning which was fine. Service seemed like it wanted to be high end but didn't quite know how... I get it, service is hard to come by. Hostess was fine, server was fine, meal was slow with very few people at the restaurant. Things came out at different times. I went to the bar for a drink and dessert one night. Wine selection is decent. Bartenders know their stuff and they were super nice. The dessert... well... the kitchen tried to serve an almond "cake" as a deconstructed catastrophe. It looked as if the kitchen messed up, threw the bits and pieces together and served it... um... no where in the description does it say "pieces" it says "cake"... so I had a nice laugh with the waiter about it and they sent it back and I enjoyed my wine. Next night I had a Cesar salad and filet mignon. Filet was great! Duck fries were not great. Salad was good but over dressed, but delicious. The reason I'm giving extra stars is because the bartender was amazing! The kitchen closes at 10, and rightfully so. We had a late night event that went over and a couple of us had to scrounge for food. I ordered our food before the kitchen closed but a boy who had been playing soccer all day just missed the cut off time, so the bartender graciously GAVE the boy his food! (That the bartender paid for!). This was the same bartender that was there late the evening before because people came in last minute and ordered and drank... so yeah, he was working hard and still had the decency to offer his food to a hungry kid! After a very long and trying day of travel, I enjoyed a very nice dinner on 30 boltwoods lovely & relaxing patio. The hostess was incredibly kind and helpful, Tom, my waiter was attentive and the stress of my day instantly began to melt. The vibe was perfect. I honestly didn't want to leave. Alas, an early morning called for restraint. As I got to my nearby room, I realized I didn't have my credit card. I immediately turned around thinking they'd likely hand it to me as I walked back in...but no one had found it? I was perplexed. I had literally turned back around within minutes...I decided to lock the card and watch the Cubs game. However, just before close, I thought I'd just stop back to see if anyone turned it in. Unfortunately, No, Victoria, the bartender, told me but let's go take another look. I explained that Tom had looked under the seat cushions before, but she suggested we do it again and move the furniture around a bit more. Lo and behold there it was under the couch. Victoria saved the day and I gave her a huge hug. It was just one less stressful thing to worry about tomorrow and I was incredibly grateful. Graduation disaster. Thank goodness this place is owned by Amherst College, thus it will never will be forced to survive on the quality of the food. Here's my dining summary from the night of May 14, 2021: A Special Prix Fixe Menu, because "graduation" About year back we booked this reservation, yet a few days before were informed they'd only be offering a 3-course prix fixe menu, at the ambitious rate of $55/person...with the most bland inexpensive plates imaginable. Prime Rib, some kind of Chicken, split pea Risotto, Salmon and a seafood medley over pasta. This was like a lousy group menu offered to tour buses. Curiously if these same options were chosen from their normal menu, would be about 25% LESS. For example, we had the option of clam chowder (normally $9), risotto ($27) and strawberry shortcake ($8) = $44. The "special" prix fixe graduation rate was $55. It was graduation weekend and 30 Boltwood was primed to cash in! (Look at attached photo of the strawberry shortcake - that pretty much sums up the dinner. It was a mess - maybe the "chef's" kid put this dish together? Gordon Ramsay would tear this place apart.) My family had the prime rib (which was ok), the vegetarian risotto and Salmon (which was tiny and seasoned unevenly). The clam chowder was like most others and the "market salad" was served in a bowl about 4 inches across and 2 inches deep. (It was sophisticated). My daughters joked about small portion, then commented it was like any other side salad you get most anywhere else. (Shaving carrots must be a sign of sophistication.) My son had the clam chowder and said it tasted like pretty much any chowder. Everything was just average - but priced like it was worth much more. Service When we arrived, they couldn't even find our reservation. Typically last names are quite unique. After THREE tries, they stumbled on the right reservation - even though they had confirmed the evening before, and asked us to arrive 7:15 PM instead of 7:30. (They were planning to be SO busy, 15 minutes earlier would really hope, so we obliged.) Upon arriving to our table, a white piece of paper with YELLOW HIGHLIGHTER indicated we'd only be welcome for 90 minutes - then we'd have to get out. Well, turns out we didn't leave in 90 minutes - because we COULDN'T get served fast enough. We went 15-20 minutes without seeing our server. Now, you might think this place is huge - alas, it's not. She just didn't come by. Not sure why. She was beyond terrible. Water glasses sat empty, wine glasses were empty - but she never noticed. She could have probably gotten at least one more round of drinks out of us if she'd been a good server. Late in the meal she almost brought our check over, then realized the desserts hadn't shown up yet and darted away. Yes - it was that bad. (Note: we went for breakfast the next morning at Stables, and all five of us agreed the servers working there were much more attentive than 30 Boltwood - maybe they should apply?) Covid Safety? Forget the environment Interestingly, drinks came with paper straws (which is good) but then every piece of silverware (and napkin) came sealed on both ends in a plastic bags. Steak knife? Another plastic bag. And some of these bags had moisture in them. By the end of of our meal, we have 8 plastic bags on the table. Not environmentally friendly Boltwood. But the 5 dessert spoons - not sealed - just laid out on a small dish. Go figure. And sorry, but at a place like this - give me a real napkin, not something that feels like it came from the food court. I was at Johnny's the night before and my real cloth napkin was delightful. In closing, this dinner for 5 of us was nearly $385. My 13 year old daughter saw the bill and commented it was more than we spend on food IN A WEEK at home - for 5 people. I left the restaurant feeling ashamed, given so many people are struggling these days and these folks are collecting a king's ransom for a lousy meal. BTW - she left this lovely, special graduation prix fixe meal hungry. Thank goodness for insomnia cookies - they were fantastic. This place is make-believe...almost like a Disney restaurant. Thank goodness it's supported by University, looks nice and sits on the edge of a lovely town green. But it's not a good restaurant. Next time, we'll go back to Johnny's Tavern. I really wanted to make good comment about 30 Boltwood when I visited the restaurant last week. I am sorry to say I cannot think of one good thing to say. The food was in one word BAD. The almost $50 steaks were full of gristle and not cooked correctly. The frites were cold and the green beans served with the meal were stringy and flavorless. The gnocchi were pasty and cold when delivered, it might have had some taste but cold it had none. The salads we ordered first were just lettuce and 2 rubbery wedges of carrot and two slices of cucumber and no dressing on them! The service was very slow, and the server was obviously overwhelmed by the number of tables he had. We ordered sodas with our meal and they were delivered half way through the meal with apologies from the server stating that the bar was uncooperative. The meal was delivered while the salad plates were still on the table but empty. That left very little room on the table. I wrote a note to the restaurant on their website before posting this hoping they would explain what happened, but no comments were made. Sad Story. read more

I lived the first 22 years of my life in the area, and frequently return to visit my parents but always felt like this restaurant was "too nice" for me to go to. My parents and I went last night to celebrate my mom's birthday and we had such a good experience. The food and cocktails are creative, delicious, and complex in flavor. We had the scallops and the steak and both were cooked perfectly. The signature grilled pineapple rum cocktail was also usual and excellent. Our waiter was just the right amount of attentive, and so nice. My dad is a talker and the waiter was very gracious listening to his stories about his own connections to the restaurant. Overall, our waiter gave us a very special and memorable experience, and we plan to come back for future special occasions. read more

Food- honestly decent. Specialty menu for Mother's Day brunch consisted of a $65 3 course meal with a minuscule variety of dishes but we made it work. I asked if the menu was kid friendly and was told there were off-menu options that are commonly found on a kids menu. I then asked when I was there for a briefing of the options and was told by the manager the chef refuses to make anything off the menu including a different variation of the dishes. I totally understand this from the chef's perspective but unfortunately the hostess hastily spoke on their behalf and gave us wrong information. Service- the bill totaled up to $483.26. We waited slightly over an hour and a half before our appetizers came out. Typically I'd drop the tip slightly (controversial I know) because of the delay on very small appetizers. But because of the accommodations made by the waitress for my grandmother's walker and my younger cousin's need for a high chair, my grandfather tipped $100- which I feel is more than fair. My grandfather was then approached by the manager with our waitress standing behind her and questioned on his tip amount. Her questioning consisted of the phrase "..that's all you're giving her after she helped with the walker and everything..." My mom then stepped in and had some words for the manager as she was questioning my 94 year old grandfather. Ambiance was okay, pretty busy. Nevertheless, they were all clearly flustered as our party of 7 arrived in the thick of the crowd as the restaurant got very busy. I used to be a server and I understand how quickly everything can escalate and derail when things get busy, but this was unacceptable, and the manager siding with the waitress' wishes to get more than the 20+ percent tip she was given made us all feel helpless against the public embarrassment. After the encounter ended, we then asked the surrounding tables if a $100 tip on a $483 bill was wrong of us to which they all agreed was perfectly fine. Not sure if it was just a really busy day and we got unlucky with timing and caught someone during a bad day but this was unreal. It was one of the top three meals I've had in years. I had the scallops, and they were perfectly cooked. The silky mash underneath had a perfect textural complement. The gremolata on top is what sent this dish from very good to perfect. It had such a perfect flavor complement while also giving you a great textural crunch. With all three of these elements together, each bite was utter perfection. For dessert I got the coconut mousse and it was incredible. The chocolate, mousse, gel, and sorbet were all just perfect. It was a great meal cap. Others at my table got the steak, burger, duck, and chicken, and everyone seemed to be in heaven. The burger first came out overcooked, and they apologized profusely, immediately fixed it, and took it off the bill. The service was friendly, and we had many check-ins without it feeling overly so. My only ding for this restaurant is the small portion sizes. I can understand that scallops are expensive, so you may have less of them on the plate, but they were even skimpy with the veg/extras on my plate. It made the plating look great, but it also was just too small of a portion. I noticed others at my table had much larger portions of everything. read more

Four of us went to dinner. First of all, it's pricey and the portions are ridiculously small. My wife got scallops and there were four strategically placed on the plate for $36. My friend got the Gnocchi, and what a joke. There was hardly nothing there! I got Salmon and the bruccel sprouts that came with it were the size of a pea. It's expensive and the portions are a joke. Its nice to see this plan improving, and to a point already that it can be a nice spot for a nice meal. The turn-around shouldn't stop though - it can and should still get better, I hope. In the last 6months, my wife and I have been maybe 6times already, eating inside and outside, meals and snacks+cocktails. The burger is still an embarrassment, and should be fixed post-haste. I mean its just not tasty and looks like a sad, bad burger (which it is). Pork is great, chicken is good-plus. Veggies are still not worth it as special sides, and they should have more on the menu; I mean, this is in the Pioneer Valley with farms all around. Cocktails are fine, but not good. They sound like they should be, but just are not ready yet and could do for a big improvement for their prices in a small PV town. I came with my parents most recently (total of two couples, basically). I did not drink, dad had a 0.0 Heineken, and wife, mom each had a mock-tail. I should have been suspicious at how easy it was to get a reservation on the night the students & their families came back to town. Too easy. I noted, in the reservation, that this was a special anniversary (since it prompted me for the information, I figured they were interested). They had plenty of empty tables, only a few were full, and yet it took forever to get a couple of cocktails which might have been best skipped. They made me an unfathomably bad rye old-fashioned (a drink that has 3 simple ingredients) that I had to send back to be doctored (for fourteen dollars, they really ought to get that right). Then they brought a "salad" with four minuscule lettuces leaves on top. My $32 Faro island salmon was blackened beyond belief - see the photo and served with charred strips of fennel and ice-cold tomatoes. This was far too important an evening for us to say anything or trouble the taciturn waitron by returning the dish - he was unpleasant enough that I didn't want to deal with him. But omg, I had to let all of you know so you won't ruin your special occasions by frequenting this restaurant. I am so, so sad that we went here. And why did they ask if it was a special occasion, anyway? Was it so they could ruin it for us? They did. read more

Just had an incredible date night at 30 Boltwood. I think the last time I was there was a couple decades ago with my family for brunch when I was a teenager. I have a much better appreciation for such a classy, well run establishment now and can't wait to go back. My S.O. And I shared the clam chowder for an appetizer and it was really good. The house made croutons on the side were a nice touch- no oyster crackers here! The buttery, crispy, fresh croutons were worthy of such a pairing. For our entrees, he had the seared sea scallops and I had the duck breast. (I was craving duck, and that's what led us here in the first place- not a lot of restaurants in the area have it on the menu). This lived up to my expectations. Our server was perfect. I wish I remembered her name, but she knew exactly when to come to our table without being overbearing. This is a nuance that some servers get wrong even with the best intentions. The cocktails/wine that we ordered were great. I especially enjoyed one that had Prosecco and Cointreau in it- I don't remember what it's called, but it went very well with the duck. My date had a martini with fig vodka, white cranberry juice and allspice liqueur. I thought that was an odd combination but once I tried a sip of his drink I realized that it was actually a pretty good recipe! We had such a great meal that we decided to take dessert home with us. My only critique is that the menu on their website wasn't the one we had at the restaurant which was slightly disappointing as I was already enjoying certain cocktails and an appetizer in my mind when we made the reservation, but thankfully the duck (the reason for choosing this restaurant) was still available on the current menu. We will definitely come back again. Can't wait for another night when we can sip a digestif or dessert drink on the patio next to the fire. What a disappointment. We were going to leave the hotel for dinner but while having drinks, we spoke with a very good server who made our drinks and talked about other local restaurants. After speaking with her we decided to just stay here and done. Service was terrible. If I ran this place, I would retrain the wait staff and train them to serve! The economy is bad so when someone decides to spend money at your restaurant, they should feel appreciated. The waiter could care less about assisting us, he was very cool and uncaring- he didn't check on us, refill our water and when I sent my blood rare steak back, it came back as well done and unevenly cooked. All he could say was "yeah, that isn't cooked right". He came to pick up the plates and mine was still full. My husband told him "her food was terrible" and he said "yeah, she told me" This wasn't a cheap meal and he didn't offer to make it right nor did he send the manager over to talk to us. The only time he really engaged us was when he dropped off the check and I felt like it was just so he could get a tip. Overall, I would never recommend dining here. The bar service and drink menu was great so I might come back just for drinks. I am still in shock that nothing was done to make this right for me! read more

Soup was decent, chickpea garnish a little rubbery... the beet salad is what annoyed me--a heap of wilted arugula with little or no dressing and some undressed beets and onions floating around. I recently (12/07/2024) Attended the holiday tea at 30 Boltwood. This is my fifth and last year of doing so. I was very disappointed in the use of tock. I did not like paying up front for my reservations. As it turned out one of my guests had a death in the family and I was out $80,as it was non refundable. The price increased by $7 which doesn't seem like much,but it hindered my bringing my granddaughters to our traditional Christmas tea. I refuse to pay $65/ child. Most places(The Drake) reduces the cost for children. I also wouldn't have minded the cost if the quality of food was better. The food last year was so much better. Desserts this year were subpar. The scones looked like biscuits and weren't very good. We were seated(6 people) on a sofa and chairs around a small oval coffee table. No room to move. One if guests had her plate upended due to lack of space. While ONE person sat a large table by herself. Was this the best use of space? On a good note the harpist was excellent as always. Really beautiful dining room, plus heated porch and yard seating. The staff are very attentive and give excellent recommendations. We enjoyed the inspired variety of mocktails. The scallops are reportedly their signature dish and they were perfection. We also tried the Korean barbecue wings which had a distinctive sauce that is a top secret recipe. The salmon tartar was also excellent. And the mussels in garlic broth came with a very filling parmesean flat bread and could have been a meal by itself. read more

I have been coming here for Christmas Dinner for several years now. It is one of those places where are you can dress up and have a delightful dinner in an intimate setting. There aren't many of those around. Sure, you have Chinese food, pizza, and your average Italian restaurants, but this is special. This is a place where you take the one you love for a romantic night out where are you can talk amongst yourselves and feel like a couple. Take away the stress and worries of Christmas shopping (now done!) and obligations galore (now met!) and be at peace with the one you love. This is a place where all genders and pronouns are welcome equally. I update this review for 2022 to state that I give this place five stars now, for being consistently good and charming in their service, as well as having some of my favorite Christmas time cocktails. This is the worst restaurant experience I have ever had. 90 minutes since we ordered our food and it still hasn't arrived. Every table in the restaurant is furious. Other tables when food is delivered all seem to have mistakes in order. Each table just says "forget it" because they have been waiting so long and who knows if a corrected order will ever arrive. Staff acknowledges it is "unacceptable." Other reviews saying service is bad are correct. They should take fewer reservations if they can't staff up. But don't come here. read more

Nice dining atmosphere- very upscale. Had a very early reservation 4:45pm. They said they were full for other times. Left around 7, there were still tables empty. Nice and quiet enough to hear table conversations. We were celebrating a birthday. Between Four of us, three of us got the filet mignon. For the price the size of the cut was small with very little amount of veggies and potatoes on the plate. It did not fill my husband's appetite. The gigantic serrated steak knives they provided, one was bent and did not work well cutting a nice piece of meat. The flavor of the duck confit sauce was not satisfying and was quite heavy. Also got the burger, was good but greasy. Fois gras appetizer - was ok, had better elsewhere. I requested my dish no dairy and they were accommodating. Service was good.
