I was there August 17th. Walked in at 2 pm--there was a sign that implied they closed at 2 pm, but I sat down and ordered a diet Pepsi and a Reuben with onion rings. The service was...shall we say...neither eager nor warm. Maybe they all wanted to get out of there--but they had seated me, so I expected to be waited on decently. I felt like a visitor at a hen party--conversation among the waitresses seemed to be the main focus. There was a definite cool vibe. Then the Reuben and onion rings came, and they were the greasiest versions of those things I've ever seen. The grease was dripping off both the sandwich and the onion rings. I like fatty food but this was way over the line--it was embarrassing. Couldn't they have used some paper towels to blot the grease? I was hungry, I ate most of it despite my misgivings. As I left the place about 2:25, I had the thought, "The cook must have hated me for coming in at 2 pm, and she made the greasiest possible version of a Reuben to let me know how much she hates me and doesn't want me there." we ate here sevral times before while under the previous ownership and it was awesome . We stopped yesterday on the way to the car ice races in Jaffrey. The building was cold , gone were any nostalgic signs or decorations . It looked more like a doctors office than a 50's diner , not a single Coca-cola sign to be seen ? . One adult was keeping a list of names of people waiting and the rest of the operation was high school kids . The food was served cold and with little imagination . A simple ham ,onion and cheese omelette ($11) was almost devoid of onions and only contained a few pieces of ham . Home fries were unseasoned and half cooked . The kids pancakes were served cold with no butter on top , they forgot sides Orders of sausage . Next trip up we will go to market basket for breakfast sandwiches ! . $60 with tip for cold tasteless food . It's to bad because this place used to be awesome . read more

Great greasy spoon breaksfast! My eggs were cooked perfect which is imprtant when ordering over easy. Service was a little off as we were never offered refills. Other than that this place was perfect. Great little outside area. read more

We stopped in for a late breakfast, ordered Greek Omelets..the egg was so thin you could read a newspaper through it, omelets should be full and fluffy. Flavor was okay, not too much in it, although ingredients tasted fresh. Coffee was very good. Potatoes were good too. We would stop again IF in the area, we'd just order something else. We ordered take out and the home fries were not cooked thoroughly and they did not give us any condiments or syrup or anything for the other breakfast items that we got. Over all the food wasn't great. read more

Saturday night can be pretty boring and even lonely in Peterborough! I'm a teacher and had been working all day, took a nap and thank god there was a place to go for breakfast at 7pm! I had never been before and I was more than pleasantly surprised, to walk in and be greeted with a warm welcome. The staff was wonderful, food amazing (especially their home made muffins!), and I couldn't believe I found a place with great coffee. Good coffee at any diner is really hard to find. We went to this place twice. The first time was when it just opened. I ordered pancakes that tasted boxed and wasn't impressed but the place was cute enough and having just opened maybe they were just not up to par yet. We gave them another try a few months later and it was even worse. The toast was dry, the home fries were burned, the OJ had went off, and I could overhear the staff talking about someone who'd been fired. The customers started it but the waitress probably shouldn't have continued it, that's just tacky and unprofessional. Did I mention the swarms of yellow jackets? Because they were out in plague proportions that day. Never went back and have no intentions to do so again. read more

Ate there today.... My wife ordereed the Irish eggs benedict...I don't think I have ever been served a "slab of corned beef" imitating real corned beef hash! very salty! The grilled hash brows; soft and cold! I asked for a grilled english muffin...hardly coofed and really soggy! Coffee!...YUCK! The staff is nice and the place is clean! The hometown diner has excellent food at a very reasonable price. In addition to the regular menu, they are happy to accommodate those with certain dietary news (eg. egg whites vs. eggs, gluten free, low salt, etc.). All you have to do is ask and they will prepare it to your special requests. Never had anything there that was distasteful. They are also great with the children. My only suggestion is that there is a particular waitress on Sundays who needs to tone down her ear-piercing laughter. It's great to see cheerful people, but it's difficult to have a conversation over the boisterousness. But she's a great waitress! :-) It can be packed out the door on Sundays - another testament to the outstanding food and reasonable prices. read more

Just had breakfast here. I read a few of the reviews on this site and I agree with some of them. I had high hopes for this place and was disappointed. It's average at best and could easily be so much better. Had to wait to be seated even though there were seats open at the counter. Stood there in the cold doorway looking at empty seats and waiting to be told we could sit in them. Finally a waitress told us to go ahead and sit in them. Waitress was nice but a little aloof. Menu is pretty extensive. Specials aren't really "specials" they are just things not on the menu and there is a whole page of them in small font and they all run together on the page really hard to read. There were probably 30 things on the "specials" menu. Our food came fairly quickly. Coffee was great. Sausage gravy is a very poor excuse. I've had worse but not much worse. Think of glue with sausage in it. Home fries looked like they might be good but they were very greasy and had a bad grease aftertaste. And that was their only taste - ever heard of spices? Toast and eggs were good. Sausage was just grocery store frozen links - restaurants would do so much better to get good breakfast sausage. Bacon was over done like it had been sitting on the flattop for a while. I was excited about the French toast- 4 thick slices. How do you screw up French toast??? Well, first you don't cook it all the way - two pieces had mushy, snotty middles. Secondly, you make it so it has no flavor. It could have been so good and I wanted it to be. My wife got the Italian sausage. It flat out sucked really bad. Don't restaurants go looking for good ingredients and products any more? There is really good Italian sausage out there. It's not that much harder to make good food than it is to make suck food. I understand that this is just a diner. But it's not a 1955 truck stop. This could be a really great place but they aren't even really trying hard to make good food. And the menu prices are for better food than what is served. It's a really cool looking place and I like diners. The counter stools are really close to each other - absolutely no elbow room. There is some seating in the back - opt for that. Service was ok but nothing special. We won't go back - no reason to - there are so many other places. But I kinda hope they realize the potential in the place and make it be what it could be. read more

It's a new business and you have people here not properly factoring that or the fact that it is busy into their reviews. If it's both busy and new, then there will be problems. Anyhow, I went at 1 PM midweek for lunch and it had a moderate crowd. Ordered the reuben with the homecut fries. The price was right for that kind of dish ($8). The fries are truly fresh, homecut fries. Delish. Food came very promptly, as I needed in that I was on work break. Folks complaining about the price here sound, to me, like cheap skates, not at all factoring in the quality of the food and service. The diner is beautiful in that it has the classic, cable-car diner atomosphere and look with a very clean, stylish and polished interior and exterior. It is 5 star for what you want from a diner: Reasonable prices, fast service, good comfort food (all-day breakfast), and warm and friendly vibe. read more

We took my mother and 2 aunts (ages 80 & 90+) for their birthdays. The staff comfortably seated 7 of us in the back room. I went for breakfast this morning and I was extremely impressed. I'm so glad that I have this place another try. The diner has a very cozy feeling to it. The staff is very friendly, professional and fast. My omelette was a combination of 2 special omelettes, the meat lover and veggie omelette together with jalapeños and tomatoes added with pepperjack cheese. I couldn't have asked for a better omelette and the home fries were absolutely perfect. Red potatoes crisped to perfection and even the onions were cooked so much better than I'm used to having with my home fries. I'm always hesitant to get onion because most places barely cook the onion. Finally I finished off my wonderful breakfast with a half order of biscuits and gravy which come with a sausage patty and more of the fantastic home fries. Everything about this pleasant meal was above average for me. I would definitely return to this dinner for another great meal. read more

Here's the thing, we have been to Hometown diner quite often to be honest and have not had any problems at all, occasionally when there is a new cook I have sent my food back. However. tonight the food was great, but the service was not. I understand that waitressing is not an easy job and that you depend on the tip to really make your money. That said, if you can't be bothered to put a smile on your face, check on a party of 5 more then as a pass by and ignore my child asking you a question more then once, then you get the tip you deserve. So our waitress Christine tonight did not earn a tip and chasing us outside to give it back because "I don't think you tipped enough to cover your meal" is rude and hometown will not have our business and I'll be sure to tell everyone I know to avoid it as well. read more

Me and my family went to try out this diner last weekend. It all started well until I needed to run to the car to change my sons diaper. It was crowded at the front door so I went out the back entrance. I looked for a walkway to the parking lot and did not see one and was in a rush so stepped over the very low chain linking two flower pots together. This grumpy mean and rude lady ran after me who I could hear from all the way outside yelling "NO NO NO NO NO NO" Then proceeded to yell at me to not step over her flower pots. Yes I admit I shouldn't have done that but she should have politely came up to me and said "can you please not step over my flower pots I do not want you to get hurt" I was so embarrassed I did not even want to go in there. She was so loud the whole diner turned to look at me. Then, some other guys came in for takeout and did the same thing I did. She yelled hooted and barked at them as well in front of the whole diner causing a scene and saying how we don't have any common sense. All while I sit right there with my two kids. The food was horrible and even if it was good how could I enjoy my breakfast with this mean grump barking so loud at everyone and making a scene to make me feel bad. You do NOT treat customers this way. Put up a sign or be respectful!!!!! Rude rude rude. Will NEVER go back and have informed all my family and friends of this place. I have never felt so uncomfortable in my life at a restaurant. read more

Went here for first time and food was NOT good. Pancakes was under cooked. My kids and I was eating uncooked batter. They took one bite and stopped eating. Eggs Benedict was ok. Oh and the BREAKFAST NAZI was was yelling at everyone in the am for using the rear entrance. Put a sign up or leave space to exit. What's wrong with two exits in that tiny place. I wanted to walk out and never return! Quess people out here are use to below average food and service. I never write reviews but felt compelled with this place. read more

Very disappointed. We read the reviews and thought we would give it a try. The positives - friendly service, clean and the outside seating is nice. The waitress forgot if she took our order or not, our order was wrong, food was just ok - nothing special and we received the wrong bill (after giving our credit card, we received a different bill $7 higher - it was accurate but you automatically become suspicious with this type of thing happening). Went to Hometown dinner today with high hopes, no tables or booth to sit in so we decided to sit on the stools (very uncomfortable). It was still a little early for lunch and given the "special" was roast beef dinner with mashed potato and corn for $9.95 (ouch), we decided to just get breakfast. After all how can you screw up breakfast, well let me count the ways! Let me start with the coffee just okay nothing special, and the orange juice (with pulp) tasted watered down!! Now onto the breakfast we both got two eggs over easy, home fries, and toast. Both meals were served COLD, eggs were OVER COOKED, and the home fries had to be the WORST I've ever had (no taste). I saw plate after plate being taken back into the kitchen with a LOT of food left on them (especially the home fries, no wonder)!! If you can't make breakfast, I don't see much hope for lunch. Prices given that this is a dinner (to me), were over priced for what you are getting. It is safe to say we will not be back, unless I hear that they get a cook who actually knows how to cook, and servers who know how to bring food out when it is still hot. I would have cut them some slack if the place had been real busy, but lets just say there was certainly no line at the door. Oh and free of charge the flies buzzing around. I hope the owner of this dinner reads the reviews, because unless serious changes are made, I'd be shocked if this place makes it long term. One star is because it did look clean (got to give them that). read more
