What is on the chopping block today? Hong Kong Express is where my friend and I landed after she mentioned wanting Chinese food. It's close to where we were at the time so we stopped by. It's your typical American Chinese food spot. It's aged on the inside but looked maintained. There were a few flies coming in and out frequently when we sat to eat. I got the combo B half fried rice half chow mein with orange chicken & beef & broccoli. The classic of the classic. Can't go wrong with it truly. Overall, their food is covered with a lot of oil. It leaves residue everywhere. And I could feel it all over my mouth. The MSG/sodium content was def through the roof. The fried rice wasn't my favorite, it was mushy and didn't taste all too great. The chow mein was just dripping in oil. The orange chicken.... My plastic fork was too weak to pierce the chicken to pick it up. It was not that great either. Beef and broccoli as you know is always more broccoli than beef. The food was definitely sitting for the day, it did not taste fresh by any means. I'm not asking for right off the pot fresh but at least some freshness/flavor to it. Service was friendly and quick as no one else was in there. They gave an egg roll on the house. I did not try it. I don't frequent Chinese fast food like I used to in my college days, but it's nostalgic and a treat for me. This place was one of them when it was under different ownership, so now it seems very different. For the fried rice, chow mein, pepper chicken, and spicy boneless chicken, it all tastes different in spite of being heavily seasoned and tastes bland. I couldn't tell where the chicken breading and actual chicken started and ended and it tasted very dry and dense. The noodles were really soggy and the rice was bland. My family use to enjoy eating here, but something has changed. About a month or so ago, I got my dinner to take home and I didn't enjoy it at all. Yesterday, I was craving Chinese food, so I was going down Willow and stopped at the first Chinese restaurant, unfortunately they actually didn't have any food left. So the second place that I stopped, had actually closed down. So the only place that I had left to stop at was the place I didn't enjoy awhile ago. So I thought that I would give them another try. I should have just went home! I ordered the beef and broccoli and mushroom chicken. OMG, it was absolutely awful! The broccoli was soggy and old and tasted horrid, the beef was dry and I don't know what kind of meat they used. The chicken tasted like it was cooked with fish, I couldn't eat any of this meal, I threw it outside in the trash. Ordered 2 combos . The food was okay. The portions are stingy , but the lady is sweet , if you tell her she will accommodate . Upon paying, I asked for fortune cookie, but she offered 2 veggie egg roll instead, which was fine. I ordered the jalapeño chicken x2. And white rice. This has become my go to chinese takeout place. I get three meals out of their 2 entree combo. They pack that box full of food until it's overflowing. The chow mein is delicious. I usually get the teriyaki chicken or BBQ pork as one entree. They cut it up into pieces and it's always tender. The beef & broccoli is my other fave. HKE had always been my go-to for many years. Started coming here around 2006 when it was managed by 2 older ladies if my memory serves right and the food was always good, Then a few years ago they changed again to a younger couple and the food became even better. I recently visited again on 2 separate occasions and I just couldn't believe how much the good quality has gone down. The chow mein was very greasy and overpowered the rice flavor. The bbq pork was also greasy with a lot of fatty. My favorite item, the crunchy spicy chicken, was incredibly dry and lacked flavor as if though it had been sitting for hours. such was the Teriyaki chicken on my 2nd visit. I also ordered a thai iced tea, and it was just too sweet. The place was clean and the service was fast. As much as I enjoyed coming here, I was simply not impressed this time around. We spotted this place after going to grab something to eat from Waba Grill, so decided to go in and check out their menu. They said that they didn't have menus, so my boyfriend started to take photos of their menu and prices, so that we can look them over for another time. I asked the guy behind the counter if I could sample some orange chicken & the rude look this dude was giving was very off putting plus he provided a burnt sample. We will never go back there. Noodles are the one reason why I stopped going to the Chinese food on Obispo/Anaheim. They switched to some cheap thin stringy noodles. I took three 1-quart sides: ORANGE CHICKEN. If you like fried chicken tenders in some orange sauce, this is for you. Good part--its not heavy on the sauce. Not so appealing part--its deep-fried chicken that isn't too heavy on the batter. My boys loved this out of the three sides though. GARLIC CHICKEN. Black garlic chicken thighs stir fried with celery, carrots, and dried red chili. It has some heat. Looks like Kung Pao, but completely different flavor. KUNG PAO CHICKEN. Your basic Kung Pao chicken with lots of sauce and vegs. Cubed water chestnut, carrots, celery, sliced chunks of jalapeño, and whole dried red chili. Not my fav... sauce was heavy. This is also spicy. Too much heat for me. Also, I must note that this is REAL Chinese fast food. Real Chinese cook and all. The spiciness of the food is reminiscent of the cuisine when I went to China. These flavors are according to region, so it might not to everyone's liking, but it is no doubt authentic to the region. Spice in Hunan, Chongqing, Yunnan is a thing. TIP: The best deal on the menu price as of 8/7/2022 is the Family Dinner meal for $42.99. Sounds pricey, but I bought 3 quarts of side items, plus a box of chow mein for $39. This is literally my guilty pleasure for Chinese fast food. I am sooo picky with Chinese fast food because some places just don't hit the spot and can leaving you wanting more. But this place? You will never feel that way. I usually get the combo B, but sometimes just the chicken bowl if I'm not so hungry. Now the chicken bowl, is not limited to only one choice of chicken. You can actually choose any chicken dish to be in that chicken bowl and any base you want. So normally I get the chow mien and teriyaki chicken or the chow mien and the spicy boneless chicken. If I get the combo B, I'll get all chow mien and those two entrees of teriyaki chicken and spicy boneless chicken. But do not let that deter you from trying anything else! My go to here is their chow mien, teriyaki chicken, spicy boneless chicken, orange chicken, bbq pork ribs, bbq pork, the beef broccoli, and their egg drop soup. Those are my favorite dishes there but I haven't had any of the food there that I didn't like. They do take card, but they charge a fee. And after a certain time, if you order two combo B, they give you one free side. If you order sides by themselves, the portions are huge. Overall, the flavors are pretty good. Taste and entree selections has definitely improved since I visited a few years ago. My tip would be to try whichever entrees look fresh. Some entrees have been sitting out for too long and looks dry. I would avoid the orange chicken here. I'm glad I tagged along my dad and gave them another try. If I could give a zero, I would gladly. Be careful with your cards. The lady took my credit card put in into the card reader device after 2 minutes something printed out. She then gave my card back and said it didn't work. I was confused because I've never had a problem with my card before and receipt paper had printed out which usually indicates a transaction was complete. I offered my debit card. She was still having difficulty. So, I offered cash. She was finally able to charge the debit card after a couple minutes. I didn't feel right leaving the store so I checked my accounts as soon as I got home. The lady charged both my credit card and my debit card. Amount charged on my credit card was 7X much more than the amount of my order. My bill was under $20! read more
