I'm boosting my rating based on my last experience with carry out from here. The veggie Pad Thai was very good with a slight bite. The mixed vegetables were just right - neither over nor under cooked. My wife was able to get Kung Pao Beef mildly spiced even though it was listed as a spicy dish. Might be the best Chinese Food I've ever had! We've done a few different call ahead orders here. The wait time is not very long at all, even when it's really busy. Most people seem to do carry out orders as I've never seen anyone in there when I go to pick up my order. There's about 8 small tables. The carry out boxes are PACKED with food! Easily 2 to 3 meals worth of food so it's worth the price. Their wonton and egg drop soups are also very good with the rice and whatever dish you decide on. I usually get a sesame chicken, which is extra saucy here, brown rice, and an egg roll. It lasts me 2 days most of the time and re-heats nicely. read more

Was in the mood for "Chinese-American" for so I went back to HONG KONG EXPRESS at Rochester Rd & Square Lake in Troy. This mom-and-pop carry out only restaurant is fairly busy: reason-consistently good quality food & large portions. I ordered two dishes, one cashew chicken combination, included fried rice & a large egg roll. I asked for "medium spicy" (cashew chicken doesn't come spicy). This dish was very tasty, very flavorful, surprisingly had a dash of black bean sauce which added to the aroma. The large egg roll was mostly cabbage but good, I could taste the "five spice". However, the fried rice was a little mushy, probably because it was precooked & sat on the steam table, not freshly cooked. You can swap the regular fried rice (mushy) for another kind of freshly cooked fried rice, but it cost $3 more. The second dish was called Special Singapore Rice noodles, curry flavored with 3 large shrimp, lots of chicken and sliced BBQ pork. This was an excellent dish!, a little spicy with loads of meats and finely shredded vegetables. If you like curry and rice noodles this is your dish. So my bill was about $29.50 & my wife and I had leftovers for two more days! This restaurant is a winner! read more

Beware of their pricing!!! It's not the advertised price. I went on their website to decide what I wanted, called ahead, and placed an order. Total came to $75 - when I went in to pick it up, it was $115!! When I questioned the amount, I was told that it was their "old menu" or "other owner". She said, "See our new menu" - I told her that it didn't matter what she had in her hand and that the online price was cheaper, she tried explaining again that it was an "old menu". Shockingly good. Some of the best Chinese food I've had in years. Huge portions. And the egg rolls are exquisite!! The whole place reminds me of Kwang's carryout in Southfield, which closed unexpectedly over a decade ago, leaving us bereft. The egg rolls here are exactly the same! Tried it for the first time first time earlier in the week and came back this weekend. I really like this place for American style Chinese food. Last time, my husband picked it up for me so I had no idea what it was like inside. I had kung pao shrimp which is always my go to when trying a new place. It was soo good. I asked for it extra spicy and it was everything I asked for. The portion was huge. I had it for a few meals. I also enjoyed the crab rangoon. There was a ton of filling. Today, my husband and I just wanted a quick bite so we split a vegetable fried rice and spring rolls. I asked if we could dine in since we were on the go. She said we would just order at the counter then she brought out plates and plastic utensils for us. The woman working was very nice. The rice was great! It was overflowing and had tons of vegetables. We also got some spring rolls. I personally think that they are homemade but I'm not for sure. My husband liked everything as well and he's pretty picky. This place is small. There's only about 5 tables and it's really more just a take out spot but we were just running errands so we ate it there today. I highly recommend checking it out. I feel like I found a hidden gem. I didn't want to make a cold sandwich yet again for lunch working from home. So Grub Hub it is! I picked Hong Kong Express because they are my new favorite Chinese restaurant locally. Food was yummy and hot upon arrival which hasn't been my experience with other delivery services or restaurant and I was able to eat three times from it so they give large portions even for their lunch size. I will definitely be back soon this is our second time ordering form here. The first time we got a family meal for four and it really seemed to be a meal for about ten with how much they gave us. First time ordering from Hong Kong Express, and it was fantastic! Best Chinese we've had in the area yet! Placed the order over the phone, and they were very nice and attentive. Order was ready in 25 min as I requested as they would have had before I could have gotten there. Order was exactly as ordered, plus extra cookies! Super fresh, hot, and generous portions. Flavors were all SPOT ON! As were our spice requests. I ordered the Shrimp with Lobster sauce and they were JUMBO 12/14 shrimp, cooked perfectly... but the size surprised me! This place is actually pretty good! Since my favorite Chinese place hasn't opened due to the virus, I was forced to try another local spot to get my fix! We tried: shrimp lo mien, shrimp egg fu young, veggie pad Thai, shrimp fried rice, General tso chicken and sesame chicken along with egg rolls! The dishes that stood out the most were the lo mien, egg fu young, shrimp fried rice egg rolls. The chicken dishes were good too- all white meat! The portions are huge and even though they increased their prices everything was still inexpensive. Food was piping hot and the egg rolls were actually outstanding. However, we did not like the hot and sour soup or pad Thai. The restaurant itself is all boarded up to be the size of a welcome mat and the just slide the food out from behind the plexiglass. We have lived in Troy for 40 years and have used many different Chinese restaurants in the city, some are good, some are not so good. This one ranks among the best for takeout and everything else. Their food is incredibly fresh, not the typical with little extras added here and there, and the fried items are very crispy and very flavorful. They also seem to use a wider variety of vegetables than most Chinese restaurants use, so I was impressed by that. Along with all that the price is better than most Chinese restaurants in the area as well. In my book this is a win-win location! read more

We got the family meal for two and boy do you get a ton of food! It came with a large container of soup, 2 large egg rolls, chicken fried rice, the packed full large styrofoam container of almond boneless chicken with gravy on the side, and a large round container of beef and broccoli! Every time we get the almond boneless, it's always been perfectly cooked and tasty! Cuz it's hard to consistently cook chicken but they do every time! Came here to find some "Good" Chinese food as others I viewed were sub par. The restaurant itself is nothing fancy to look at and neither is the inside, which almost made us turn around. But we were hungry, so we took a gamble. The owner told us that you actually get more food when you order to go, and so we did. It looks like it's a to go place setting because that's what a lot of people came in doing. I ordered the peppered steak dinner combo that came with fried rice and an eggroll. My husband got the spicy chicken dinner combo which was not so spicy at all, but it was good. My food was well seasoned; I love when I can actually taste that they velveted the meat to make it tender. I didnt like the egg roll as much, and was surprised that the combo didnt come with soup, but oh well. I bought it for my parents and they enjoyed the tenderness of the chicken. Overall, their prices are good. Lunch combos are a little under $7 and dinner combos are under $9. The picture menu on the wall looks really outdated and sketchy. I would probably not eat there, but I would take out. read more

We are always willing to try what looks like a hole-in-the-wall place, because you just never know what slice of heaven you might find. This isn't it. We visited this restaurant when we were in town house hunting last fall. We ordered our standby dishes--Hot & Sour soup, crab rangoon, and General Tso's chicken--and none of it was very good. The soup tasted basically like thick broth, there was hardly any filling in the rangoon, and the chicken was grisly bits in a sickeningly sweet red sauce. All in all, VERY disappointing. Been here at least one other time. Really good specials. A lot of tasty, quality food for 5.99. My friend and I both ordered General Tso's chicken. Came with sauce, spring roll, rice, and broccoli. It was pretty difficult to eat. Ordering was a little out of the ordinary. Seems like not many people besides regulars and people close to the owner come here. My friend is a frequent regular so even when we dined it, we were given boxes like take-out. So it's a dine-in place with no waiter service. Neither my friend nor I gave tips as a result so it is what it is so be aware. All in all, an underestimated place with great food! read more

I have been coming to Hong Kong Express for years. It was one of my first fast carry out chinese go-to until I found many others. It was convenient located by the house we used to live in and it was like a 2-4 mile walk to get some chinese food. But now I live many 10 minutes away and have become a little unfaithful with my relationship with HK express. I'm sorry. But you guys aren't too consistent. Good chinese food tends to be consistent with their taste but this place has their days. I have a good friendship with the lady that runs the place with her husband, we have brief conversations here and there and she really is very sweet. Her husband is a great cook but there will be times you might get maybe some left overs mixed in with some fresh stuff, or the dish just smells and tastes old. Now you might be wondering why do I still continue going? There's a certain attachment to the place I know their potential and I know by now they just run the place for the heck of it because it's a job and it's routine. But they aren't horrible. $5.00 lunch combos, massive portions, no skimping on the meats and you get an egg roll to accompany your food.
