Cashew Chicken combo (spicy), includes fried rice & egg roll-$11.99

Was in the mood for "Chinese-American" for so I went back to HONG KONG EXPRESS at Rochester Rd & Square Lake in Troy. This mom-and-pop carry out only restaurant is fairly busy: reason-consistently good quality food & large portions. I ordered two dishes, one cashew chicken combination, included fried rice & a large egg roll. I asked for "medium spicy" (cashew chicken doesn't come spicy). This dish was very tasty, very flavorful, surprisingly had a dash of black bean sauce which added to the aroma. The large egg roll was mostly cabbage but good, I could taste the "five spice". However, the fried rice was a little mushy, probably because it was precooked & sat on the steam table, not freshly cooked. You can swap the regular fried rice (mushy) for another kind of freshly cooked fried rice, but it cost $3 more. The second dish was called Special Singapore Rice noodles, curry flavored with 3 large shrimp, lots of chicken and sliced BBQ pork. This was an excellent dish!, a little spicy with loads of meats and finely shredded vegetables. If you like curry and rice noodles this is your dish. So my bill was about $29.50 & my wife and I had leftovers for two more days! This restaurant is a winner!

Large portions and good tasting food. The team accommodated my shellfish allergy. We will be back.

    Inside

Tried it for the first time first time earlier in the week and came back this weekend. I really like this place for American style Chinese food. Last time, my husband picked it up for me so I had no idea what it was like inside. I had kung pao shrimp which is always my go to when trying a new place. It was soo good. I asked for it extra spicy and it was everything I asked for. The portion was huge. I had it for a few meals. I also enjoyed the crab rangoon. There was a ton of filling. Today, my husband and I just wanted a quick bite so we split a vegetable fried rice and spring rolls. I asked if we could dine in since we were on the go. She said we would just order at the counter then she brought out plates and plastic utensils for us. The woman working was very nice. The rice was great! It was overflowing and had tons of vegetables. We also got some spring rolls. I personally think that they are homemade but I'm not for sure. My husband liked everything as well and he's pretty picky. This place is small. There's only about 5 tables and it's really more just a take out spot but we were just running errands so we ate it there today. I highly recommend checking it out. I feel like I found a hidden gem. Not sure how I just found this place this week when I have passed by it a million times.

I ordered a carryout. Chicken and broccoli in a brown sauce. Added bamboo shoots and made it spicy. Enormous portion! All white meat chicken. Rare to find a place like this. It is very well priced. I'm so glad I found this gem

I didn't want to make a cold sandwich yet again for lunch working from home. So Grub Hub it is! I picked Hong Kong Express because they are my new favorite Chinese restaurant locally. Food was yummy and hot upon arrival which hasn't been my experience with other delivery services or restaurant and I was able to eat three times from it so they give large portions even for their lunch size. I will definitely be back soon this is our second time ordering form here. The first time we got a family meal for four and it really seemed to be a meal for about ten with how much they gave us. Super nice and fast too!!

BUUT why are you closed every time I'm craving Chinese? I get it. Everyone deserves time off. You're a small family business. Work-life balance, as they say! But I want my (huge, perfectly crisp, bursting with deliciousness) egg rolls dammit! I've even got my parents who live in Arizona hooked on you like a drug. Only to be disappointed whenever they are in town-sure enough you are closed! It's becoming a running joke in my family. I'll call and get a busy signal on your single phone line as many times as it takes (11, to be exact tonight). Today, I hit rock bottom and ended up getting the most awful/greasy/disappointing almond boneless chicken and salty weird wonton soup from another establishment, like an addict who needs her fix). Never again. I understand that good things come to those who wait... I'll keep waiting for you, Szechuan Gourmet. Please be gentle with my heart. And my tastebuds. And my GI tract.

The guy "tag-teamed" his wife to come out of the kitchen and bicker with me, right in front of multiple other customers, when I "dared" to speak up about their tone and attitude, then repeatedly pointed to a sign on the wall that said "we match your energy" (AKA: "we reserve the right to be total a****les for any and all perceived slights, real or imagined") when I had the "audacity" to complain about how they spoke to me and my dad on the phone and in-person. They were furious that my elderly dad was "taking too long" to place his order for four people (he was not, at all) and acting like it's somehow our fault that they only have a single phone line. Give me a break (take-out only establishment, by the way). They then proceeded to promptly cancel my dad's order and shoo me out, all the while cussing at me in Mandarin, at which point I walked out of there (for the last time). You would do well to AVOID this place at all costs, trust. Not to mention, I've had their food more than a few times before, and it is not even NEARLY good enough to justify them being this nasty towards their patrons. Their offerings are the very definition of "sodium-infused slop" and "mediocre at best" and they act like we are lucky to be allowed to purchase them. What a joke! Do yourself a HUGE favor (like I did) and pay a little extra for a place with WAY better people and service, and MILES better quality food, places such as Shangri-La (amazing!), for example. Never, ever again. You have been warned!

I also LOVED the noodles; they had the best texture and length in the Metro-Detroit area. When it comes to service, there's definitely a "hands-off" approach, as you order via a QR code and a machine brings your dishes to you. However, I was personally a fan of that, and we were still checked on by workers from time to time. Food came fast and I absolutely loved the vibes and interior of the restaurant. Total plot twist. The place was pretty quiet with only a few diners, so service was steady, though a little slow at times. We ordered the veggie noodles, cucumber salad, lamb skewers, xianbing pancake, and juicy pork dumplings. Overall, the food was decent and comfortably average, but honestly, we were just excited to finally find a Szechuan-style Chinese restaurant nearby. The veggie noodles were the clear winner of the night: chewy, flavorful, and coated in a sauce that had us going back for bite after bite. I could've done without the bok choy, though, and I wish the noodles had been a little less oily. The cucumber salad leaned much sweeter than we expected and was swimming in a bit too much soy sauce for our taste. The pork dumplings were nice and juicy inside, but the wrappers were slightly too doughy. Now the lamb skewers? Absolutely delicious. Great flavor, good portion size, and easily one of the highlights of the meal. The biggest disappointment, unfortunately, was the xianbing pancake. It didn't feel authentic at all. The crepe was way too thick, and the crispy crackers inside had lost all crunch and turned soggy instead. Still, the cozy vibe, solid noodles, and tasty skewers made it a worthwhile visit, especially if you're craving Szechuan flavors around Madison Heights.

But to be clear, it's not going to be particularly great. Something about the time of day that I pass by through this area gets me so excited to toss in a pickup order just to see what I get. The Singapore-style Mei Fun is reliable. Get it plain without the Singapore curry spice if you're more suspicious. lol. Anything like String Beans with Garlic, or Beef with Broccoli, is going to be perfectly acceptable for a road warrior like you. The location, consistency, and ease of triangulation with regards to ordering over the phone (or having your shotgun passenger order) about 10 minutes before you reach this Hwy exit merits a solid 4-star review. The food is 3-star ish, but the mere existence of this place warrants a bonus "Oasis" star.
