Hong Kong Express I really wanted his place to be good. I've lived in Saginaw for about 20 years of my life and we make some good Chinese food. I've had the best Chinese food. Bar none. I've been a dishwasher for a good Chinese restaurant, waiter, and a cook. I know my menu and how each dish should taste. Here we go. Another test. Can this place live up to the name? Let's go. Small place. Express only. Few chairs. The woman at the front desk was very nice. Good service. Service with a smile. I ordered Pepper Steak and Szechuan chicken. The two basic dishes. Pepper steak tasted correct. Spot on. Szechuan was clearly off. Did not taste correct. The sauce was more like sweet and sour. Clearly the wrong sauce. I really had high hopes. Another disappointed. You might enjoy, but to me, I'm still looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant. Not here. I see a lot of customers. It's sad they don't know what good Chinese food is. I also want to express that this place gives small portions of meat. "Dragon Palace" in Vassar gives huge portions of meat and everything. That's what sells. Cutting corners does not sell. My Szechuan dinner was basically all veg and hardly an meat. Yes, I can see the difference. Hit up "China 1" in hazel park, MI for excellent Real Chinese food. Waited almost an hour after the estimated time, which I'm okay with, but then they gave us the wrong order. We went back to try and sort it out and they INSISTED that they gave us the right thing. Had food delivered from there. It was disgusting! I had vegetable egg foo young and they gave me the sauce that they use for pad Thai so it had a peanut flavor. Disgusting! I paid extra for chicken fried rice, which was just boiled white rice, nothing fried about it, that I can tell and some some chopped onions were in it. Awful experience. The lady who took our order was aggressive and quite rude on the phone while we placed the order. She abruptly hung up without providing a total or a time frame. The crab Rangoons were just chopped onion in some sort cheese(?). The dishes we ordered were lack luster, mediocre and the best part was the vegetables in the rice. Delish! I am usually not a fan of Chinese food... but for some reason I had a huge craving. Found a spot on the way home, with somewhat decent reviews. Called and placed a carry-out. #23 General Tso Chicken and #27 Sesame Chicken with a spring roll instead of egg roll with pork fried rice instead of regular fried rice. The man who took the order stated 15 minutes and my total was $19.99. Well I was there within 15 minutes, order was just brought to the front counter, & checked out. Fast service on picking up the carry-out. The portions were very large, all hot and fresh when we opened the containers. We had left overs for lunches today which were just as good re-heated. This place is my comfort food when I'm visiting home. I remember skipping school to come here and eat egg rolls (that's what everyone does when they skip school, right? LOL). This is "Detroit-style" Chinese food, mind you, so if you grew up somewhere else it's going to be different from what you're used to. No one makes it the same as they do in Detroit. For example, the dish Almond Boneless Chicken (a/k/a ABC, a/k/a deep fried with gravy atop a little sprig of iceberg lettuce so you can pretend you're eating vegetables) is crave worthy and unmatched anywhere else. Cashew chicken, shrimp lo mein, egg drop soup ... big fluffy dinner rolls that are a Chinese culinary non sequitur, but just go with it. The name of the game here is carbs and fat. Everyone wins. Hong Kong Express offers take out chinese to the hungry folks in Waterford. I typically order either the General Tso's Chicken when I'm lookin' for something a little spicy, Almond Boneless Chicken when I'm looking for something rich in gravy/fat, and (forgive me if my memory is going the wrong direction here) Cantonese Chow Mein with chicken - yum. The first two options come with combination platters for a reasonable price (under $7 last I ordered). The Cantonese Chow Mein is a pint/quart type thing and a side of crispy noodles comes with it to pour the wonderful chicken/celery/etc. on top. Very friendly counter help - and a quick turnaround on most evenings of about 10 minutes for your order. I highly recommend Hong Kong Express when you're jonesing for some chinese food in a hurry - maybe during halftime of a Michigan football game, for example. Go Blue! read more

You can tell they make their food with the right oils and ingredients because it is not too salty and loaded up with random sauce. They have a huge menu and vegetarian which i LOVE. Love this place, i was skeptical but way better than other places around. Way better than wonton palace on cooley. We probably order from here once a week. This is an update to my previously glowing review. Last night, my hubby and I were craving Chinese, and since this place was so good in the past, and they're near my office, I decided to swing by on my way home and grab us the goods. Today, I am still reeling from the incredible bout of food poisoning I got from the egg roll I ate. How do I know it was the egg roll? Because I was the only one who ate one, and my husband was fine. How do I know it was this place? Because I got sick about an hour after eating, and this was the only food I had eaten all day. It got so bad, my husband went out and picked pick me up some medicine, so I could have some relief from the vomiting and get some rest. It was awful. As I said, I'm still reeling from it. I've been able to have some water today, but I'm too afraid to eat anything of substance. My stomach is still angry and painful. read more

Worst Chinese food I've ever had. Egg roll had nothing but cabbage. The Chicken Fried rice was flavorless and contained very little chicken. The Kung-pao chicken was not spicy and very bland. I grew up in Waterford and now live in Texas. I'm here visiting and my sister brought me here on a whim. No bells and whistles just good food. Their pork fried rice is the best I've tasted since the old Joy Garden in Pontiac which was really hard to beat! I will now crave this place and come back time and time again every time I visit! Recently moved to the area. I've tried three different Chinese spots looking for the best one. Ugh, I've had so much bad Chinese food during this experience that I wasn't expecting much. But to my surprise, this place was on point! I'm not a rice fan but I shrimp fried rice came with my meal and it was pretty damn good. I like to order a variety of things I like, so I got Sesame Chicken, it was different, when I opened the box I thought it was sweet and sour chicken because it didn't look like the norm. Im used to seeing a dark red sauce and the chicken being completely covered in it and the chicken being cut in squares. Instead the chicken was it in strips and the sauces was like squirted lightly over the chicken. But it was very good. I also order Shrimp Egg Foo Young, that was very good and Sweet and Sour Chicken and that was ok. The Egg Roll was good too. Overall, I've found my go to Chinese spot. A little further than I'd like to travel but the food is worth a 10 minute drive when I'm in the mood for Chinese. read more
