Ok. Second review on our second meals. Besides the warm faces that greet us at the counter we are loving the food. Wife got the sesame chicken and I had the orange chicken. The only fault would be not enough sauce on the sesame chicken but, it's omg food!! The chicken was perfect and the rice was great. We also got the dumplings and I am usually not a fan and my wife is but I stole over half of them from her this time! We agree that we are getting our money's worth! Hard to find a good Chinese food restaurant in the Clarkston area. Yelp search found this place which had some good reviews. Was not expecting what appeared when I arrived to pick up my order. It was a small storefront in a small three store strip center. Not the cleanest, but charming Chinese youngster met me at the counter there. Food was ready when I arrived When I got home, the food was still hot (15 min drive). The portions were generous and the flavors were satisfying. Unfortunately the protein (chicken in all three meals) was tough, dry, difficult to bite and cut. We Ordered three dinners and all were the same issue. darn it! I ordered online on my way home from a friends house. I didn't realize this location doesn't do online orders, but that was my mistake for not paying more attention. I ordered 5 rolls - yam yam roll, Godzilla roll, crunch roll, spider roll and tempura vegetable roll. My fiancé ate the yam yam roll and liked it, but the Godzilla roll was just okay in his words. I started eating the tempura veggie roll and ended up with not one but TWO pieces of plastic wrap in my sushi from where they rolled it up and sliced it. One piece was fairly large. The rolls are huge, but honestly I didn't care for them. The tempura batter was slightly over crispy and the spider roll wasn't very good. I gave the rest to our dog. I spent $46 and we only ended up eating 3 of the rolls. Really disappointed after reading good reviews and ended up not eating all of it. read more

Tai Pan is our household's favorite local spot for Chinese/Asian Fusion. My boyfriend (a self-proclaimed Almond Boneless Chicken connoisseur) says they have the best ABC he's ever had. Out of all the places he's ordered it, this is the only one I'll eat! We love the soupy consistency of the gravy, the chicken isn't over cooked, and the portion sizes are huge. So far, our other favorite items here have been the General Tao's Chicken, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Pepper Chicken, Pad Thai, and spring rolls. For a lighter option, we split the sushi Bento box #2 (California, shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, and salmon avocado rolls). Overall great service and consistent quality! read more

Tried this place for the first time. Ordered a wide variety of things, and to be brutally honest they were all misses. $50+ for 2 and everything was flavorless. Wonton soup - instead of the small folded wontons you usually find there were these huge potsticker looking things.... As another reviewer mentioned, they are identical to ones you can find in the frozen section at costco. Very hard to eat in a soup. Had a funny after taste. Egg drop soup - extremely salty!! Inedible. Crab Rangoons - undercooked, the bottom seemed doughy. Chicken pineapple fried rice (or Thai fried rice) - This is my GO TO dish at any Asian/Thai restaurant. The rice had zero vegetables (see photo). It was sweet with so much pineapple and not at all savory. Couldn't taste the curry and the lack of vegetables was extremely disappointing. I've never had fried rice without vegetables, and Thai fried rice is usually loaded with peppers, onion, carrots. The chicken was hard and tough. This was my entree and I couldn't eat it. Straight in the trash. Massaman Curry - when she took my order, it should have been a red flag that she didn't ask a spice level. I asked and she said it's medium. Medium, ok that sounds good. This curry has zero flavor /spice. We do have some red curry paste we can stir in for leftovers and hopefully salvage this dish. The onion and potato chunks were huge! A little weird and unmanageable for a curry.... Overall, any restaurant selling sushi, Thai, and Chinese should have been a red flag. I figured how could they screw up fried rice? Apparently it's not that hard to do! Do yourself a favor and visit any other Thai food place in town if looking for food, flavorful Thai food. read more

The best egg rolls in town, probably the state. Service is always fast. The place is tiny and even though I think you could eat inside, I would only order carry out. I really wanted some sushi for lunch and stumbled upon this spot. I found out that's it's only been open a month but that didn't stop me from placing an order. The woman on the phone was SUPER nice and explained everything very well since I was very specific (and slightly complicated haha) with my sushi orders. I ended up still being very basic and ended up getting an Alaskan Roll, Classic Roll, and Tuna roll. The more avocado the better! Everything tasted fresh and tasty. I'll definitely be back. Tai Pan's menu is a little different, but they have a lot of options for sushi along with a few "Chinese American" options. I am very happy that I happened across this place while in the area for work. It is the best Chinese take out I've had across Macomb and Oakland county. Approaching hangry and not wanting to cook, we turned to Yelp for inspiration. Hot and new appeared for Tai Pan so we thought, why not? We were in the mood for Thai, Chinese, or sushi and it covered all of the above. Their location is incredibly modest- no real plates, instead everything is served in take out containers. Not a lot of space as it appears most of their business is carryout. Don't let that turn you off- the food was incredible. We started with an order of crab rangoon, the best either of us had ever had. The shells were crisp and not greasy, thin enough to not overpower the filling. We also shared three sushi rolls, a sweet potato tempura roll, a spicy California roll, and the Michigan roll. The sweet potato tempura was nicely done, I like to dip it in spicy mayo. The spicy Cali was very good, that's a pretty standard roll. The Michigan roll had spicy tuna, cucumber, and avocado with tuna on top and spicy mayo. I loved the flavor combination. I read anther review that mentioned mayonnaise in a lot of their rolls but I didn't experience this. To top it off, we ordered General Tso's chicken. It was a massive portion of food- I think we would have split it had it been the only thing we ordered. Between us we ate the broccoli and a few pieces of chicken, and sampled the fried rice. I think the rice was a little bland but I like to eat all of the chicken the use the rice to soak up the sauce so that was okay with us. Our total bill was about $35 which is a steal. The service was excellent and attentive. Tai Pan, you are definitely on our go to list for take out nights and sushi dates. read more

Tai Pan just opened recently super close to home so I had to try it. We got a spread to really test the quality and across the board I loved it. Crab Rangoon - perfect blend of cream cheese and crab. Wonton Soup - broth isn't overpowering but the wontons are delicious!!!! Sushi - I don't particularly go nuts for sushi but I thought it was good :) Szechuan Beef - holy crap the portion was huge! The vegetables were perfectly cooked and the beef wasn't fatty or over cooked. This definitely has some heat so if you can't do spicy, this is not for you. Sesame Chicken - This was good but if you like a sweet flavor to your sesame chicken you probably won't want to get this. Egg rolls - not greasy! I enjoyed it :) I will definitely be back and try some other items off of the menu. You should try this place! Get to go though, the restaurant itself is tiny :) read more

Our experience last night with our first time pick up from the Waterford restaurant went from great to horrible quite quickly. Our receipt has 0020 on it and says #20-1 PKU Lisa 03/12/20 05:39 PM. The Tempura Crispy Green Bean and the 3 sushi rolls (Ferndale and 2x Shrimp Tempura) were very good. We then got to the 2 "Thai" dishes and Mongolian Beef and that's where we were shocked. The Mongolian Beef was good, but the "thai" dishes were the worst we have ever experience and eat Thai 2-3 times a month. We heard good things about Tai Fai/Tai Pan and went out of our way to try it last night since my daughter was home from school. Neither the Thai Green Curry or Thai Massaman Curry had coconut milk/cream in them. Not sure if the restaurant ran out or what, but coconut milk/cream is key for those two dishes. During our 2-3 times a month of eating Thai, Massaman is always one of the dishes and Thai Green Curry on occasion. I'm even questioning as to whether this omission was the only issue with these dishes. We paid $25 plus tax for the green curry and massaman and sent a couple emails asking for a refund or credit to use on a future sushi order and got no response. read more

Yum! My husband found this place close to home and we decided to get a carryout Friday evening. We ordered multiple sushi rolls and they were really good. The looks of this place; to be honest it looks like a dump. Located in a small plaza with not much around off Williams Lake Rd. The crunch roll was by far my favorite with shrimp tempura & even their basic California Roll was great. The sushi tasted fresh and our carryout took roughly 25 minutes. The restaurant was busy, people coming and going for carryout orders and others dinning in. Looking forward to ordering more sushi or Asian Food at our next visit. UPDATE 1-2019 (after name/ownership/menu change): This is an update to my reviews of this restaurant coveri g the recent name change/ownership change/menu change. I'm giving this 4 stars now instead of 5. Contrary to what the previous reviewer stated, the prices have *not* gone up universally nor have they gone up 40%. In fact, some of the menu items decreased in price, and most stayed the same. However, I do agree that many more of their sushi rolls now have cream cheese (yuck) or are fried (yuck). The main reasons I am giving Tai Fai four stars instead of the previous 5 I gave to it are as follows: (1) Some of our favorite items are no longer on the menu. For example, their avocado/crab/cucumber salad is gone, and this was one of our favorites. The new chef made it for us because we expressed our disappointment, but the fact remains that it is no longer on the menu. Likewise, a couple of the low-carb (no rice) sushi rolls are gone from the menu, most notably the Naruto roll which was made with strips of cucumber instead of rice. (2) food quality seems lower. The noodle dish I ordered seemed clumpy and spiced too heavily. It just wasn't the same freshness we came to expect from Tai Pan during the short time they were open. (3) the sushi did not seem to be as good. While it tasted pretty much the same, it just didn't seem to be as nicely and carefully put together. Overall, we just don't like Tai Fai quite as much as we liked Tai Pan. Not sure why Eric and Kate left (maybe they sold it?) but maybe the restaurant could have kept its place in our hearts if only they hadn't taken some of our favorite items off the menu. Yes, you could probably ask the new chef to make some of the old favorites, but it's not the same when you have to ask someone to make something f that is not on the menu. I don't like to post this review because I really did want to like the new menu and wanted to give the new owner a chance, but it's just not the same, and that is a bit disappointing. It's not bad. Just not amazing like it was before. Excellent -- sushi was fresh and tasty, and the Mongolian beef was hot, fresh, spicy, and the beef was not fatty or tough at all like it can be at so many other places. Just the right amount of spice too. My favorite part was that they offer several sushi items (Mars roll, Naruto roll, etc.) that do not have rice. Since I'm eating low-carb (keto) lately, this was very important to me. Their egg drop soup was also very good. Will definitely be back, for both lunch and dinner. UPDATE 1: just as good the second time! I got a couple of low-carb rolls (this time a Crazy Horse Roll and a Mars Roll) while Abbi got the Airport Roll and a California Roll. Emma went with the Almond Boneless Chicken, which was a huge, fresh portion cooked perfectly with a side of delicious gravy. I also got a roll that they said they are going to call an "Eric Roll"... cucumber spiral-wrapped around crab stick, with sesame seeds and a light rice vinegar sauce. Delicious! I'm telling everyone I know about Tai Pan. Again, it's a tiny place that's definitely designed more for takeout than eating in (though they have a couple of tables and will gladly come to your table and take your order and serve you... total seating for maybe two parties of 3-4 each at most, or *maybe* 3 parties of two people, but probably ), but either way it's fantastic and a much-needed addition to the area. Might try their Thai dishes next time. They do offer plates and silverware for eating in, but their pop and water are all cans of pop and bottles of water at $1.00 each. Just to set expectations. None of this detracts from the fact that the food is absoluteexcellent. UPDATE 2: One more review... I brought my wife in last night for dinner, since she is the only one at home who had not eaten at Tai Pan yet. We shared an avocado salad and edamame. My wife and I agreed that we could both eat the avocado salad every day... and I typically don't even care for cucumber! It was avocado over julienned strips of cucumber with a slightly spicy ginger dressing. She got sushi... California Roll and two Shrimp Tempura Rolls (she ordered the second one after finishing the first, which she has never done before, so I know she thought it was excellent!), and I got Szechuan Beef and a Naruto Roll. She definitely enjoyed the sushi, and my Szechuan Beef was excellent. Huge portion with tons of perfectly-cooked vegetables. This was my 3rd time here in two weeks! Still have not tried their Thai dishes, and I'm also hoping to come back to try their lunch one day soon. read more

Review updates: Tai Pan has now changed their name to Tai Fai. Their menu has changed. Most of their sushi now has cream cheese, and the prices have gone up by about 40%. So apparently there was a change in ownership since last visit. Ordered a fire cracker roll, spicy tuna roll, and seaweed salad. The prices did go up which you can see on the whiteouted menus they are passing out. Some dishes by quite a bit. The roll i ordered from the Tai Pai menu which i thought i was ordering from wasn't on the new updated menu, but they still accommodated. The only issue the pieces were much to big, never thought that would be an issue but you gag trying to eat it. The spicy tuna was fresh but very bland, was really looking forward to that. Hope they work out there kinks was really enjoying this place before. read more

Just moved here from a city in CA with a heavy Asian influence and I was craving some sushi. The reviews looked good for this Tai Pan - so I leapt! The service is awesome. They are accommodating and kind. Unfortunately, I found out the hard way that there are only a handful of rolls that do NOT contain mayonnaise. I have never in my life (grew up in MI, raised my babies in Maryland, lived in CA, Traveled the (Asian) world, etc-) been served a California roll prepared with mayo. They were able to remake it for me - which was great! The waitress was very kind and marked every roll on the menu for me that contains mayo. Pretty much EVERY roll contains mayo - BUT - you can request the rolls w/o mayo! (Awesome) I want this place to succeed. I going back to try their noodle dishes in a couple weeks - so I will update my review then! read more

Finally had the opportunity to get take out from this place. Was hoping for great things based reviews. We ordered one egg roll, a bowl of wonton soup and sweet and sour soup,almond chicken and house Cantonese fried rice. First of like to say that food is visually very attractive and the portions very generous. Our entrees could have each served two. The almond boneless chicken had three huge breasts. Wonton soup: big portion, beautiful colors from the addition of three or 4 thinly sliced carrots and three broccoli florets and large slices if celery. I could have done without the vegetable. The "wontons" -there were 3 or 4- looked like the frozen dumplings you buy at Sam's or Costco and had no taste. The broth was tasteless. Hot and Sour soup: husband liked it said it was unlike any other he'd had. Great flavor and a nice kick. Cantonese fried rice ( chicken, beef and shrimp: the shrimp were regular sized shrimp, no tiny canned shrimp. Small pieces of beef and chicken. It also had broccoli. It was a large portion. I found it had very little flavor. I has about a quarter cup of it and threw it away. Almond boneless chicken. Huge portion. The gravy (separate) tasted like weak beef gravy. Not good. Eggroll: small but lightly breaded, which I thought was preferable to the bedding laden egg rolls I've had at other places. I wonder why there was no pork on the menu. Pork is a highly used and enjoyed protein in Chinese and Japanese foods. If I only wanted to look at food i'd buy it here. If I wanted something that actually tasted good I wouldn't buy from this place and will not return. read more

Our favorite sushi takeout in the area! We ordered tonight and didn't realize they recently revamped their menu. Two of the rolls we ordered are no longer on the menu but the owners graciously made them for us (or the closest they could based on current ingredients) and they were fantastic! This was delicious! I am a sushi lover and husband is not so it is the perfect place for us. The Pad Thai was saucy and moist and the noodles and chicken were cooked perfect! The mild was plenty hot for us- it felt like the spices were worked into the sauce instead of the usual sprinkling of red pepper. The sushi was very good too! Tasted very fresh and they gave us tons of soy sauce. My only thing would be that the sushi rolls were not very many pieces! read more

Stopped in for lunch with the family when we were in the area a few weeks ago. The service was superb and the portions were huge! The sushi chef gave us a complimentary serving of sushi and even gave our 8 month old baby some fresh avocado to munch on while we ate. All the dishes were fresh, authentic and had a slight smoky flavor to them that you can only achieve by cooking with a wok. read more
