Ordered takeout from here for the first time. The Hot and Sour soup was decent. The coconut shrimp was strange. I was expecting shrimp coated in coconut. Instead, I got what I would call fried donut bites with tiny bits of little shrimp inside. They were sweet on the outside. Inside, the batter was wet and uncooked. Quality local place where you'll be pleasantly greeted by a lovely older woman taking your order. As I sit waiting for my order to go, I notice everyone picking up is a regular. Lots of catching up on how customer's families are and such. The food is better than some of the operations that pop up in strip malls. I have to say I'm in the Navy and I travel all the time. During all those travels the only thing I crave is the food from this Chinese Restaurant. It was voted one of the best in the area a few years back. The two people that make this restaurant happen are two of the must friendliest people around. If you decide to come back they will must likely remember you and what you ordered before. I'm not going to lie I have been eating at this place for about 20 years now and can't see myself eating any one else's Chinese food. I think its the best in the world. We've lived around the corner from Hong Kong for nearly 10 years - driving past almost daily and we've dismissed it every time the craving for chinese takeaway has hit us. We judged a book by its cover, and that was a mistake. It's delicious! Don't let the slightly shabby strip mall or dated, but clean interior dissuade you - don't make a 10 year mistake like we did. We had the Orange Chicken, Curry Chicken, Hot & Sour Soup and Egg Drop Soup and really liked them all. My only oh-so-minor complaint is the Hot & Sour soup could have used more heat - it wasn't as hot as I like, but it was very tasty. They only take cash, so stop at the bank on the way. I just tried Hong Kong Restaurant this afternoon with my husband. I'm not sure why reviewer with poor grammar did not like this place because we thought it was excellent. (Almost all the reviews on Google+ agree with us.) We were very pleased with the food and service. The lady who runs the front end was very friendly, and you can tell she finds joy in her work. We ordered the Szechwan chicken and the sweet and sour chicken; the Szechwan chicken was particularly divine, and the egg roll and crab rangoon were fantastic as well. Even the rice was delicious. The building itself is outdated but well kept: a sure sign of a great hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Also, they accept only cash, so make sure you hit an ATM before you go! While this place may not look like much on the outside, the food is wonderful and reasonably priced too. We've definitely found our go-to Chinese restaurant in St. Charles. read more

Those five star reviews, I'm not sure those people have ever had decent Chinese, even Americanized Chinese. Let me start with the menu, which is missing some rather common dishes. No sesame chicken, not even General Tso? i wound up getting the Empress Chicken combo, which was passable. The egg roll was disappointing and tasted like it had been sitting out for some time. The rice was a good deal saltier than I expected or like. The Empress chicken? I don't know what they served me but it wasn't Empress chicken. Empress chicken should be very similar to sesame chicken but less spicy. What I got wasn't breaded and was covered in a pale sauce, closer to mu gu gai pan. I've enjoyed everything I've tried here. And the lady who owns the place is so darn nice and funny that I feel bad if stay away too long. We always get carry out. And it's always hot, fresh, and delicious. Many times there are asians eating in the dining room. It could be they are related but it's a sign to me that the food is pretty traditional. We found this restaurant two months ago and now we are moving to Utah. I'm sorry we didn't know about it six years ago when we moved here, now it is our favorite chinese place in St. Charles. The food is always fresh and delicious, and really tastes homemade. Most Chinese places seem to have pre-made fried rice, but theirs is great. Interior is rather dated, and they only take cash.
