Hong Phat is one of those places I've been coming to for years, but have never reviewed. It's a great little market. They always have the things I come for - tofu, sprouts, noodles, Kam Yen Jan sausages, fresh veggies - and their selection of sauces and other condiments is really good. They also have several different brands and types of rice. Their meat section always has oxtail (beef tail), which is great because I never remember that I want oxtail soup until I go there. Most of their produce is very reasonably priced. They always seem to have really nice eggplant. The staff is friendly, and super helpful if you need to ask questions. The store sometimes feels a bit crowded, but that doesn't stop me from shopping there. One note: be careful going in and out of the parking lot. It's on College Way so the traffic can be heavy, especially on a Saturday. read more

Asian markets are always challenging for me because they usually have some of the things I'm looking for, but rarely have all the things I'm looking for. That was the case at Hong Phat, but I'm giving 4 stars because the store is clean, neat and well stocked, the meat and produce are fresh, and the staff is friendly, helpful and courteous--ie very willing to tell me which brands of kimchi and pad Thai sauce are most popular, which is the best brand of oyster sauce, etc. They also let me use their bathroom during an urgent need. I know, that's TMI, but it gives you an idea how nice & kind these people are. If you need a larger selection of merchandise, you would probably need to go to Lakewood. read more

I love this Vietnamese family owned market ! Just moved from Bay Area and finding my new go to market for all my pho, bbh ingredients! Great CLEAN selection of all types of meats and the best organic whole chicken. My mom who came to visit me is very picky on grind meats and pork. She said this place has the best ratio of grind pork with fat for bun rieu! The veggie selection is amazing and you can tell they care about the packaging. Never once had bad wilted old selection here. The back fridge section has freshly made tofu, ingredients for banh mi, hard to find veggies for those other dishes and a great selection of miso. The owners are so welcoming and very helpful. That alone is why I come here to shop a majority of my meals before heading to any other store. The parking lot is tight so come early! This Asian Market may be small but, it has a wide variety of fresh, quality, vegetables and produce perfect for the Thai, Vietnamese, and Filipino dishes we make at home. They carry various packets to assist in making Asian food dishes, numerous types of rice, tons of quality vegetables, good frozen products, and decent meat selection. We regularly come here because the people are friendly and the high quality of produce. I would say, the only downside, is the store is always freezing cold, which is necessary to keep the veggies and other perishable items in the store fresh, so make sure to wear a coat or cardigan when shopping here. read more

I remember it being sort of filthy, all of the produce rotting and dominated by the same Cambodian, Thai and Vietnamese stuff I can get anywhere in town. Either my memory is wrong or the place has changed. Many more Chinese items that I remembered and the meat all looked fantastic (duck heads! pig oviduct! pig intestine!) and the place was spotless and devoid of the fetid smell that a nearby Southeast Asian market has. I love it! I don't, however, love anything about the College/Pacific intersection. So terrible. read more

I am visiting the area for a couple of weeks and was here to get some fresh, Asian cooking supplies one can't get at a big chain supermarket like Albertson's or Fred Meyer. Since I am used to shopping at Kim Nhung Superfood, what strikes me immediately is the "cozier" feel of this place. You can literally walked through the entire store in 10 minutes or less. But what seems, at the surface, the liability of this place is, to this YELPER is actually an asset. Who does NOT want to get in and out of a "grocery" store in 15 minutes or less? You forgot a certain vegetable, fine. You do not have to go back about 15 or 20 aisles to get it. There are at most, about 10 SHORT aisles of groceries full of products imported from Asia (I think some of them are actually manufactured in nearby California). Don't be deceived though, I don't know about any other time but when I was there, the vegetables and produce in general were all fresh. None of the rotting tips on leaves of lettuce for instance. Touche to Roger A when he said what Asian market isn't dirty. BUT the way I look at it, ALL these ingredients I bought are GETTING COOKED anyway so I don't really mind it. It is NOT grossly dirty by any means though. For the rest of my vacation, I think I will be coming back here if I need some Asian ingredients. read more

I didn't see all the fresh produce people are raving about. I did spot a bunch of greens covered in ice- which doesn't seem all that fresh to me... anyways, yeah this place has a nice selection and the best price on mushroom udon. They do have the fresh tofu. I noticed a nice selection of fish. They also carry a few things like Tikki, Tandoori and chutney. I wish it was not FREEZING in here. I would have grabbed a few more items if my fingers weren't turning blue. Overall, decent little place. read more

I was able to find Jamaican vegetable amaranth here as well as some tubers that I never expected to see in this part of the world. The store is compact yet well laid out. The prices are great, especially on things that you can find elsewhere, like plantains and coconut milk; and they have the brand I like, Chaokoh. I love this place for staples like rice, sauces and frozen ingredients but it's fresh foods really shine. Their produce always looks and tastes amazing and they have an amazing variety of greens, root veggies, all the types of eggplant, bitter melon and more. They often have fresh soymilk, fresh rice noodles and more. Hong Phat is a necessity for vegans on a low-carb diet. They have an impressive selection of vegan proteins for such a small store. Several of them are supplied fresh (as in wrapped in saran wrap fresh) and they are among the best I've ever had. I love the fresh tofu, which is delicious cold and plain or pan-fried with seasoning. The fresh fried tofu is heavenly served cold with sesame oil, red chili, and soy sauce. They always have plenty of frozen, unflavored soy sheet, another product I can't live without. I love the frozen puffed tofu. It makes great "French toast" when sauteed in soy milk, olive oil, agave syrup, and cinnamon. They have two varieties of "dried" tofu (not really *dry*--it's what Trader Joe would call "high protein tofu"). They just put in new freezers a couple of months ago, and with the expansion came a few more vegan proteins that I like more than I expected. There's an imitation fish (shaped like a fish) made of soy sheet wrapped in seaweed that does a good job of approximating the aroma, taste, and textures of fin fish; when fried in a pan, the seaweed browns and crisps to a pretty convincing facsimile of fried fish skin. (Sorry if that grosses out the vegans; I was raised a carnivore.) The "Imitation Ham Turkey Flavor" is nothing like either turkey or ham straight out of the package--too moist and tender, not the right flavorings. However, sliced very thin, sprinkled with applewood smoked salt and amchur powder or citric acid, and fried to a crisp, it's an excellent substitute for ham. I love the "Vegan Sausage", which, again, is nothing like any sausage that I ever ate: it is smooth and homogenenous, and very white. But it has a delicate flavor enhanced by the leaves in which it is wrapped, and a satisfyingly meaty texture, so it is one of my all-time imitation meat favorites. All of the products named in this paragraph are onion- and garlic-free, rare finds indeed. The frozen teriyaki vegan chicken is the best chicken-simulator I've ever gotten in a store, although I've had products on par with it in big-city restaurants. Hong Phat even has a couple of canned glutens--not my favorite brand, but they will do in a pinch. They have frozen edamame too, good quality. In addition to strictly vegan products, they also have vegetarian products that contain milk or eggs. I can't comment on those, but I thought I'd mention that they are there. Either I haven't found them yet, or there just aren't very many Asian grocery stores in the Lacey/Olympia area (I have found a total of 3 in Lacey so far). When I recently moved here, I thought I'd have to go all the way to Renton's DK Market and 99 Ranch for my staples. But, among the other items Hong Phat keeps me supplied with are: vegan proteins, several forms vegan fish sauce king oyster mushrooms oyster mushrooms enoki mushrooms bunapi mushrooms banana bud green cabbage chinese cabbages/broccolis of several varieties young coconuts perilla leaf (fresh) holy basil (fresh) powdered mushroom bouillon vegan tom yum paste (YUM! no garlic or onions) Sunflower brand Jasmine Green Tea ginger (fresh) galangal (fresh) nori soy sauce (an endless selection) frozen chopped lemongrass noodles (toooo many: dried, fresh, frozen, fried, unfried, "ramen" with flavor packets) The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful and they will stop what they are doing to assist you, often before you ask. They take credit cards and ATM cards. My $$ moderate price rating is sort of an informal "average" between the cheap prices of the more ordinary items vs the high prices of the imported vegan proteins. The vegan fish, for example, is $6.00, and I eat that in one meal. The puffed frozen tofu is outrageously expensive when you consider the weight of the package. The fresh tofus, however, are local and quite cheap. I only give them 4 stars because the 5-star rating is for "as good as it gets". Hong Phat is not the ultimate store. The space is strangely allocated: too much of some things, not enough or zero of others. They are short on spices, although they do have one of the best mild red chili flakes, Wang brand. They have NO Chinese herbs like angelica. It may be just my preference, but I think they could free up both sides of an aisle and a half by cutting out 90% of the varieties of noodles, rices, soy sauces, snacks, and flavored ramen packets and replacing them with more categories of items. Most of the fresh vegetables are labeled in one or two languages, neither of them English; I like to try new things but I often pass up interesting-looking veggies because I can't be bothered to go ask someone how to prepare them, so that's some dollars not earned. But they probably know their market better than I do, so who am I to say. They do seem flexible, so if you go there and ask they may try to stock what you ask for. I'm talking about that beautiful, long, purplish kind that gets soft and kind of sweet when you fry it. You believe this type of eggplant is in short supply. You quickly learn that Safeway doesn't have it, or what they had was soft and rotting. QFC might have it, if the stars align. You start to think your eggplant is rare, difficult to find. You have this awesome recipe for Szechuan eggplant or maybe you even dug up some eggplant stirfry on all-recipes and you are trying to be cool. Either way, the problem is the same. You end up craving your Japanese or Chinese eggplant, and you need that recipe all year long and you have no supplier and now your dinner hopes seem all but lost. But then.... Hong Phat Market!!!! Yes, of course! Hong Phat has NEVER let you down. You drive 15 minutes each way from south Lacey and back because YOU KNOW that Hong Phat Market has what you need. You happily cruise right past QFC and Safeway knowing that you are heading for the sure thing. It's going to be good. It's going to be fresh. You smile as you know you are going to support a small business. A business that HAS YOUR EGGPLANT. Oooooh, and your ginger. And your garlic cloves (already peeled at a great price). And your bok choy - or maybe pick up that packaged baby bok choy instead. And your scallions - fresh and large. This is now my go-to Asian market. They have everything I need except for kaffir lime leaves. Produce is very fresh due to a rapid turnover. If you buy any Asian products at a big box grocery store, you would be well advised to go here first. You'll save a lot of money. They also sell chicken breast for 1.99/lb and shiitake mushrooms for something like $4.50/lb (but only when available). The produce selection varies from week to week, but there is always a lot of good fresh food to choose from. The only negative is that several times they have been almost totally out of tofu, but that is something you can get anywhere. I was impressed that they carry several Patak Indian sauces and chutneys at a good price too. read more

Was looking for an Asian grocery store in the area, and stopped by this one after passing it by a couple times on College. It's a small store with a lot of Vietnamese grocery staple items. They have fresh produce and some meats as well. Another cool thing is that there's a small selection of ready made Vietnamese fast food such as ban cuon and ban mi the Vietnamese sub sandwiches. Unfortunately not the tidiest place, which is sort of an important quality for me when it comes to grocery stores. The proprietor is friendly however which sort of makes up for it. read more

I Love this place. Except for the tiny Diva check out girl & Grandma in the back everyone is always helpful, if cool by American standards for customer service. Pricing is the best in town and the entire place has been spruced up quite a bit lately. The specials change according to what is in season (they are not called specials - just there all of a sudden) are truly wonderful, fresh and often a new experience. The meat counter looks like a turn off but the meats are really fresh, well butchered and well priced. As with any fresh fruits and vegetables you have to take care, but usually they are as fresh as they can be. I love this place read more
