MEDI-CAL PATIENTS: I went to see Dr. Hong Vu for the first time this month. She replaced a white filling for me. But before she did so, she told me that Medi-Cal only covers silver fillings and that she would charge me extra $30 for white fillings. For 6 years I've been on Medi-Cal, seen multiple dentists who gave me white fillings, and have never been charged extra. When I asked her to call the Medi-Cal office to check, she said she wouldn't charge me since it was my first visit to her. Later I called Medi-Cal to verify, and they confirmed they cover any filling whether silver or white. It's wrong to charge poor people on Medicaid extra for procedures already covered by Medicaid. BE AWARE. Also, I had a cleaning which lasted around only 15 minutes and seemed short. When I got home, I saw several stains that were not removed between my teeth. Not thorough. read more

Dr. Vu is absolutely one of the finest dentists I have ever met. My neighbor broke a tooth and didn't have a dentist. I contacted Dr. Vu's office early Saturday morning, and she answered the phone. She squeezed my neighbor in and removed the tooth. It was broken in half and she gave her the most gentle kind and professional treatment and service. she is really wonderful. I recently was treated by Dr. Vu for adult dental braces. I had some severe crowding in my lower teeth and a baby tooth that didn't quite drop out. Dr. Vu outfitted me with the clear braces at a fairly reasonable cost and the procedure itself was painless. Experiencing the day to day of having braces in your 30's and 40's (regardless of dentist) is a huge pain in the ass. This is especially so for me, because I have a tiny mouth and I was whining about it all the time. However, Dr. Vu and staff was very patient with me complaining about them month after month and also implemented some techniques with the wiring to accelerate the straightening process. I was in and out of the braces in about 14 months, which is not bad! After being outfitted with retainers, my teeth are still straight. She has alot of techniques, never gives a procedure that's unnecessary and is very knowledgeable. I have to say, getting braces at any age is worth the pain. I never knew my teeth can be naturally straight. It makes a huge difference to the shape of your mouth and your smile and now I am obsessed about keeping them straight. If you have to get a procedure like this or any type of dental work, I highly recommend Dr. Vu. The staff is like family and they have flexible payment models. I have heard horror stories from other friends who have gotten braces at other dentists and had to have them on for a really long time, only to have the teeth shift back right away or they are recommended procedures that are ineffective. Not here. She knows exactly what she is doing and I also love the fact that she can perform more sophisticated oral surgery in addition to the routine cleanings. Recently I had gone to a different dentist and told I would need almost $1600 worth or dental work (yes even with my insurance) even though they didn't even estimate the cost for the tooth I came in complaining about. I also asked them about my wisdom teeth because I had felt them coming in but they told me I didn't have wisdom teeth to worry about....THAT WAS MY RED FLAG! I decided that since I am a recent college student I would need to either A) save up some money B) beg my parents for the money (how embarrassing) or C) get a second opinion from a different dentist. After doing A I decided to go to Dr. VU to talk abut getting the crowns and root canal that I supposedly needed...Her office is in a little sketchier part of Long Beach but it is a very beautiful and clean place inside. It is nicer than one would expect. Well first off I do have wisdom teeth (duh) and they showed me my x-rays so I could understand everything going on. Also she filled my teeth without numbing me and it was PAINLESS!!!!! She let me know everything I needed to take care of , no judging, and very personable.Even her front staff was awesome with my insurances. Love this place. Went there 3x already. All the staff are very friendly and helpful. I had a root canal and cleaning done there. I was a little afraid since my tooth have a hair line of fracture inside.... But Dr. Vu was very extra careful and got the root canal done with no damage. Tooth feels alot better. Painless. My experience with Dr. Vu does not match what others have said. I went to her for a cracked tooth and was told I needed a crown. I have no doubt that the diagnosis was correct but I don't feel that the work she did was very good or that she was professional. My biggest complaint is that the entire time that the permanent crown was being installed in my mouth Dr. Vu was gossiping with her assistant. It was very disturbing and I was very concerned as to whether she was really paying attention to what she was doing. At one point she was trying to remember the name of a movie and, with her fingers in my mouth, she stopped what she was doing to look at her assistant and ask what the name of the movie was. It's hard to describe in writing exactly how this interaction was but I would liken it to two people sitting in a coffee shop gossiping and carrying on. Except that there was serious (in my opinion) work being done on my teeth, and there were fingers in my mouth while this was transpiring. Again, this was very disturbing to me. I had a crown put on one of my teeth previously and that crown looks and feels just like any of my other teeth. The one that Dr. Vu put on neither looks nor feels like my other teeth. The crown feels like one side is higher than the other. She had a hard time fitting the crown and had to keep grinding it down (or something like that...I'm not a dentist). I did mention that one side felt higher but I was told that it fit. I should also mention that this permanent crown was the second one because when Dr. Vu and her assistant were installing the first one they cracked it and had to have a new one made. I won't go back to Dr. Vu under any circumstances, and I'm going to have my crown looked at by another dentist to ensure that it was done properly. read more

Got dental cleaning done here, Dentist Hong asked if she could fill my front tooth due to a chip I have had on it for a few years. Agreed. Got my front tooth filled and went home. IT FELL OFF IN 30 MINUTES. Called to reschedule another appointment. They would not do it for free even though she didn't properly put the filling on. After speaking with assistants and Dentist for sometime we rescheduled an appointment to redo it. They filled my tooth and chipped the front tooth right next to it. It's been 2 months and the filling is slowly chipping away. As she was filling my tooth she was talking to people and not even paying attention. Will never go here again. BY THE WAY: A good and proper teeth cleaning should take 1 HOUR. This lady took 15 mins. Disgusted with this team. read more

I have not been to the dentist in a really really long time and chose Dr. Vu because of the great reviews on yelp. I was so nervous and shaking and Dr. Vu and her staff made me feel so comfortable! As far as "gossiping", I am glad Dr. Vu was talking to her assistant during my cleaning! Before that, I was really tense and was holding on to the arm rest for dear life lol but when she started talking to her assistant, it relaxed me in a way and I was able to just sink into the chair. I think it helped me take my focus off the sounds of the equipments. She also works around what you have to pay out of pocket which is great compared to other dentists! I've gone to western dental and they will tell you that you need a deep cleaning right away before doing any other procedures however, Dr. Vu goes with what you are comfortable with and works around what YOU want done first. This was by far the worst teeth cleaning experience of my life. It was incredibly painful but fortunately only lasted a few minutes. How she got my teeth cleaned in that short time I'll never know but I didn't care, I ran out of that place as quickly as I could. The dentist showed no care or concern while she was working on my teeth. The assistant was nice but essentially poured water all over the bottom half of my face while she was rinsing my mouth out. I have been seeing Dr. Vu since my now husband's very enthusiastic recommendation about 6 years ago. I had had a prior horrible experience with Western Dental and wish I would've known about Dr. Vu sooner! She and her staff are very warm and friendly and Dr. Vu is always excited to see me. I kinda feel like part of the fam there lol I have had numerous teeth cleanings, X-rays and even a root canal with Dr. Vu. Until about 2 years ago, I paid out of pocket since I didn't have dental insurance and her prices are very reasonable. I had been to a dentist before in a more upscale location that charged around $500 just for X-rays and a white filling. I was ticked! Dr. Vu is WAY more reasonable. One time, she even buffed out some chips and unevenness that I had in my two front teeth at no extra charge! That was so nice of her & it looked WAY better afterward. The only thing is, you usually have to book appointments a couple weeks in advance because she's obviously got a great clientele going and she's busy BUT I just called right now for a wisdom tooth growing in that just started really hurting me yesterday and her staff was able to squeeze me in tomorrow for a small $30 emergency fee which I will gladly pay so I don't have to be in pain all this holiday weekend. In regards to another Yelpers complaint that she talks ("gossips" was his word) with her assistant the whole time, I admit she is chatty but never takes her eyes off what she is doing and she OBVIOUSLY knows what she is doing. After having been to her numerous times, she has never messed up or done less than excellent work. I never worry about the outcome when I'm in Dr. Vu's hands. Bottom line: I love Dr. Vu!! read more

My daughter and I are new to Dr. Vu. My daughter had a very bad experience with our prior dentist and refuses to let the Dr. Vu remove her spacers. She was patient and understanding and tried everything to convince my daughter to let her remove the spacers. Unfortunately after about an hour we all gave up and had to reschedule. The whole staff was supportive and professional about everything. So today we were back to get my annual cleaning and try again on getting my daughter's spacers removed. Mind you today is 12/23/14 everyone is trying to get work done before the year end. My daughter again was not cooperating and did not let Dr.vu do her job. So Dr. Vu continue on with other patients, meanwhile I was able to convince her that she had no other choice but to let the doctor to her job. Needless to say as team we got the spacers out!!!
