I am pretty impressed. when we first moved to salem we had a hard time finding decent chinese food. then we heard from a friend that the hole in the wall looking place named honga was actually really good. we dont have to spend a lot and have leftovers for days. the food is great... just greasy enough to satisfy that cravign for greasy chinese food. i totally recommend the general gaus! read more

This has become our go to place for Chinese Takeout. Delivery is super quick. The food always comes hot. The combination plates are cheap and give you a large amount of food. Great value. My favorite is the General Gaos chicken although everything I've gotten is good! Fried Shrimp, Chicken fingers, egg rolls, chow mein. Standard stuff but they do it well! I was a HUGE fan of Honga. Everything was always delicious. Tonight they delivered our order to the wrong address and 2 hours later, they wouldnt offer any solution to remedy the situation besides us ordering again and waiting AND also being charge again because "they dont know how many people are in my family and someone else could have taken the food"... We're the only people here and i wouldnt be posting it to Yelp if i wasnt genuinely upset. I used to order from Honga all the time until I found a place that offered a free appetizer or entree when your purchase reached a certain dollar amount. But when the other place came under new management and went downhill, I decided to give Honga another try. Big mistake. They seemed to have gone downhill too, except for their prices, which seemed to have gone up. Two apps and an entree with rice cost $31! And their fried wontons don't have pork in them, they just fold empty wonton wrappers and fry them. Other places fill them with pork, and that was what I was expecting. Plus the driver shortchanged me by 88 cents, and when I tried to explain it to him, he countered with some explanation that didn't make sense, and I didn't feel like arguing over such a small amount of money. They have an excellent Hot & Sour soup. I usually get one of their house specials like the fried Tofu in Meat Sauce, with white rice and the cost is a bit lower. I'm always surprised at the large portions though. The overall taste is what you would expect from the Average New England Chinese food. I've lived in a few different parts of the country and have noticed small differences in how similar recipes are prepared. It is not the most upscale restaurant around, but I always order my food to go. And to be fair most Chinese restaurants are like this. You can't expect much for their prices. Just went to Honga for the first time. I did take-out, but couldn't help but notice how immaculate the place is. I ordered Chicken Cashew with fried rice and boneless spareribs-a combination dinner. More than enough for two people. The food was delicious. Everything was fresh and tasty. I will definitely be going back, and highly recommend others try it. read more

So my co workers and I ordered from here last week after waiting an hr and a half for our food to arrive they called us asking for our address again and then explained to us they mixed up our order and brought it to the wrong location. Not only did we wait super long for them to re cook new food they didn't offer any compensation for the invonvince on their behalf not even a sorry, however we got attitude from the person on the phone. First time customer. Ordering online was very easy. Requested a 5:30 pm delivery. Showed up at 5:30 nice and hot. So far I have tried about half of what I ordered. Wings were crispy, flavorful and delicious. The egg rolls, delicious. The boneless ribs were tender, had a nice bit of char but a little under seasoned. Moo shu pork also excellent. I've been here a couple times and the beef lo mien is great, chicken fingers are good, the general gaus chicken and egg rolls are okay too but I've had better. White rice is mushy, the pork fried rice has barely any pork at all and the rice has too much soy sauce and is always mushy too. I have ordered the crab rangoon a couple of times but it always tastes stale and the beef teriyaki tastes more like pork strips, I do not think it's really beef! I've been going to Honga for about 5 years now. It's one of 3 asian restaurants in the area that has kept a consistently good level of food quality IMO. If you're looking for piping hot, fill you up, good 'n' greasy chinese food... nothing beats Honga. Their prices are cheap, you definitely get your money's worth. The only downside is, like someone already mentioned, it's not a fancy looking place. If you're looking for a nice night out in asian cusine then try Bankok Paradise on Washington street, the food is incredible, but you surely pay for it. read more

Worst service I've ever had in my life. We ordered from them at 6pm, were told 30-45 min...We got our food at 7:50pm. We called after an hour to see what the hold up was, they said it was on its way. When we called back a half hour after that, we were hung up on after being told they were busy. I will not order from any restaurant that finds that kind of service acceptable. I have been here once before and i was disappointed then as i am now. I thought i would give it a second try. so the first time I believe i got sesame chicken, which just tasted gross and very fast food like and crab rangoons which were disgusting (terrible flavor and cold), and peking ravioli, which was ok. this time I got peking ravioli, again not bad, although they didnt pack me duck sauce. I also got the boneless spare ribs which were burnt, dry and too chewy, so gross. I also got the vegetable mooshi, it tasted pretty good, but it looked way to mushy and liquidy i almost didnt even tried it, but i did, and it was very greasy and fatty (i'm not saying i wanted it to feel completely healthy, it's americanized chinese food, it's gonna be unhealthy) but it was way to unhealthy and salty, I could only eat one serving. Definetely not going back! it may be cheap but so not worth it read more
