A team of five from Honl tackled the trimming and pruning of a tall Tree of Heaven spreading too widely, with efficiency and care. Teamwork supported the amazing skills of a climbing specialist, enabling the surgical removal of limbs without damage to other plants or structure below. The tree was left healthy and still shapely, and the yard below left totally clean of debris. Communication was good from start to finish in this project, and the service provided for a very reasonable price. For me, competence is the most important consideration in taking down part or all of a tree. His crew came out a few days later with a wood chipper. Honl Tree Care has done several jobs for me, including pruning an Italian plum tree in my yard and on three street trees: a crab apple, a smoke tree, and a Japanese snowbell. In addition they removed an invasive wild cherry tree, a holly tree growing up through my azaleas, and oak trees growing up through my azaleas, courtesy of squirrels planting acorns that they get in a nearby park. Those " volunteer" trees in my azaleas had been impossible for me to even get to, much less remove, but Honl was successful and didn't even hurt my azaleas! They did a wonderful job pruning all the other trees, even taking care to remove a low-hanging yellow jacket nest in the crab apple that I hadn't even realized was there. When I had questions about the work done, the owner, Chad Honl, came out quickly to make sure my concerns were addressed. He and the arborists who did the work were all friendly, helpful, and competent. In November I wrote a bad review for this company because they did not show up for an appointment. Since then, the HONL owner/manager called me, explained what had happened, and came out today to give me a quote. He also offered me a discount in compensation for the missed appointments. They even had an appointment open today, and as they were less expensive than another quote I had since received, I had them come out today. They showed up immediately and did a great job at a good price. I'm now happy and giving them 5 stars. They also gave me good advice on how to care for the tree during drought. Honest people doing great work! Mark came out to give us an estimate to prune the fruit trees in our yard. We have already done some pruning but we weren't confident with our ability because we just started learning. So we wanted some professional help. We were very much ready to pay Honl to do the work, because our friends speak highly of them. However, instead of just taking our easy money, Mark recommended not doing any pruning for now and just see how well the trees fruit this season and make a decision based on more observation. He even gave us a few simple pruning tips so that we can keep pruning ourselves in the future. All of these were free. My wife and I purchased a house that has a HUGE western red cedar that had not been properly cared for for decades. We knew it needed immediate care, and we were afraid that it may have to come down. Best experience we've had with tree care services. We've used Honl Tree Care on at least six occasions. They helped us out when a wind storm blew down our hundred year old walnut, cutting the tree into manageable chunks that could be carried way then clearing up the debris. They came again to assess damage to other trees caused by that fallen walnut, pruning and saving what could be saved. Later we asked them to remove a huge cedar that was old and unstable. They spent several days consulting with us, "dusting the tree" (removing branches) and clearing a work area before beginning the dangerous task of bringing down that 80-foot beauty. And then later they planted two new five or six foot tall trees for us to replace the trees that had come down. We have also used them for basic tree maintenance in our front and back yards. Always they have been friendly, efficient, respectful, knowledgeable, courteous. Chad Honl, the owner and a true gentleman, sets the tone. The experience for us has always been enjoyable. Our yard in SE Portland has many mature trees so we get them trimmed on a regular basis. We've had Honl do that trimming 2 or 3 times now. Earlier this week their crew came out and spent most of the day (34 degrees and wet) hanging from our Quaking Aspens correcting damage from the ice storm in early 2021. As we all know, arborist and maintaining trees is not inexpensive. Yet we have always felt we got our money's worth from Honl Tree Care. Disclaimer: I did not have the fortune of actually receiving their services. That being said - I contacted (who I think was) Chad just before the end of their business hours on a Saturday. I told him my parents had a tree leaning pretty heavily in their back yard and they were afraid of it falling close to either their house or deck. He was very cool to hear me out and ask for detailed pictures of the tree. I messaged the pictures to him and he was ready to get a team together either that night or in the morning, clear about it being an overtime situation for his crew, but more than happy to help should it be an emergency. After talking it over with my folks, they said that the thought it could wait till Monday morning. I made the appointment with (Chad) for first thing Monday morning and felt really good about my interaction with him and his willingness to help me out, now well after business hours. 20 minutes later I get a text from my parents that the tree had fallen!! Thankfully, it landed in another tree that kept it from hitting the deck. So after all of the gracious back and forth with Honl, I had to cancel the appointment. These guys removed a trunk off of a mature cherry tree that was leaning on our neighbor's garage. The work was contracted by my neighbor, but I had a fair amount of contact with the owner and his crew. It seems like arborists, like dentists and mechanics, are targets of my cynical attitude. I haven't met one yet who didn't advise me to take out more wood than I wanted. I'm sure it's a way to make money in a business that many don't really have a firm grasp of, but it always makes me wary. However.....this job went pretty well. They left a few longer sections that I hope to get sawn into lumber, the area was clean and the logs neatly stacked. The garage didn't have a huge, log-shaped hole in it when they were done, which is a plus in my book. I almost left off a star due to an overcharge on taking out a smaller branch on a nearby tree. While I felt initially the charge was really high, I talked to the owner and he agreed to reduce the price. He did emphasis that he pays his guys above scale wages and harps on safety, which costs more. His response was timely and courteous, so it worked out for both of us (hopefully) in the end. read more

He followed four previous bids, two of which were unbelievable (but I don't like to leave poor reviews on Yelp), and his was fairest overall - most comprehensive, less nickel and diming, most customer oriented. They sent mark over to give an estimate, but instead he just helped trim the tree for free! He told us that a major trim was not necessary, and happily trimmed it without any cost. These guys have had to come back to my property 2 times on two different properties to fix their sub par work. The first time was a $2000 job and they sent a crew out to fix the problem admitting they didn't do the job right. So I gave them another shot at a different property and they did a good job. Two years later I called them to trim back an Asian pear tree that was overgrown and producing too much fruit and growing over three neighbors yards. I came home and it looked like they didn't do anything so asked them to send someone out again. The crew that came out simply cut the two largest limbs off the tree and called it good. This was the spring of 2020. I get upset with them every time I look at this tree and the mess they left behind. Overhanging limbs on their own with no thought to symmetry of the tree on two sides and two big gaping holes and an obvious hack job. I'm guessing this was a new employee. I paid them and let them know I was unhappy and said no need to contact me as I won't be using your servers anymore. My advice unless you're onsite to guide this team don't bother! read more
