We booked Samsara to come prune a few large trees encroaching on our roof. They came by and set up Do Not Park signs along our entire block. About an hour later, a woman I had never spoken to before informed me that our appointment was cancelled and she couldn't say when we'd get a new one. I asked if they could retrieve the signs and she did a whole stupid show of needing to hang up, speak to someone, and call me back to tell me no. We live near a hospital and there was a worker's strike happening, so that parking space was pretty precious to my community. We went out and picked up all the splintery, dirty signs and put them away. We were told to put them back out a few days later for our new appointment, so we did. A few hours later they cancelled on us again - citing a big job they hadn't managed to finish that they'd be wrapping up tomorrow instead. Once again, TBD on our new appointment time. At that point, I told them not to bother. That this was extremely disrespectful and unprofessional, and I no longer wanted to work with them. It was then that the owner started blowing up my phone, offering to be at our home at 8am the next day to do the work at a discount if we would still have them. He called me at least 3 times and texted several times in the span of just a few minutes until I blocked him. Just end to end terrible service and absolutely wild behavior. Another reviewer mentioned that the owner becomes "unhinged" and I would agree. (He also loves to gaslight and try to discredit negative reviews) He was lovely during the quote, but the calls were totally inappropriate and unprofessional. No means no, friend. Edit: Since the company would like to lie and discredit their negative reviewers, I've attached the email with my quote approval to show I approved the quote and booked Samsara. Furthermore, it doesn't shock me that you have zero women working with you - the woman I spoke with on the phone was probably someone's partner filling in. She seemed totally overwhelmed. I was happy with the initial tree trimming and told I should wait until November to trim boxwoods and Japanese maple and other bushes because of heat. The original job cost me over 1800.00 So I waited and then I got a quote for just the bushes and was shocked at the price for instance just the boxwood hedge was 500.00 all in all would have been over 3500$. I can't recommend your company because of outrageous prices! I understand the high price of tree trimming and large hedges. But the small bushes...too much! read more

I really wish I didn't have to write this review. I used Samsara once for some tree work at home, and the arborists that came out did a decent job. The issue is the office/management. Our neighbor had them remove a tree on our property, and it went fine, but they never followed up when I asked about having them plant a new tree. I followed up after a few months, and got it scheduled. I told him a different day would be better, as I wouldn't be at the office that day, but he said I didn't need to be there. I received a bill that said it was due that day, but I was out of the office that week, and was going to take care of it when I returned. I then received an email stating I was "past due" five days later. Still whatever, but then I got back to the office and they planted a tree that was questionable for whether or not it would meet the requirements of the permit. In looking at it, I saw the price tag, which showed a price of $25 less than I was charged. I reviewed the bill more closely, and saw that they charged $50 for what couldn't have been more than $25 of materials. I questioned this, and Devin got very defensive, saying that his time added to the price of materials. The time was part of the quote - obtaining and installing the tree was quoted, plus materials. If the quote said something like "materials will be charged at cost plus 10%" like can be standard with construction contracts, fine, but it didn't. Instead, the response was "Regardless of cost, we offer a service and set the price of these materials and service as we see fit. We charge more for these materials than we pay because we spent the time to acquire them and supply you with them. We are running a business after all." I told him I would pay the bill if & when the tree was approved by the city as meeting the permit requirements. He seemed to agree to this. When the city approved the permit last Friday, I intended to come into the office Monday morning and pay the bill. Before I was able to do this, I got a threatening voicemail from Devin that stated he was taking my "nonpayment very seriously since [I] had stated I may not pay the bill." I said I would pay if and when the permit cleared; if that is a threat of nonpayment, there's a problem here, because they shouldn't expect payment if they don't do the work properly, until it is fixed. He continued to lie to me - stating he had "no contact from me" even though he was responding to an email chain where I had contacted him. He then got unhinged. Highlights from him: "The price of materials is a moot point. We supply the materials, therefore we set the price of those materials," and "I will add that in order to plant the tree where you requested we needed to grind additional roots that were not in the original stump grinding area of the tree that was removed. Normally it is an additional $125.00 minimum to even take the stump grinder off the trailer. We chose not to charge you that fee but can add it to your bill if you continue to make threats to not pay your current bill in full." We paid for stump grinding and asked them to plant the tree very close to where the old came out, so they didn't do the stump grinding right the first time and now he's just threatening to charge more for not doing it right the first time? I expect to receive more threats while waiting for the check to clear. He emailed me 97 minutes after a previous email because I hadn't responded yet, and this is likely to continue. If you're going to run a successful business, you need to be good at both what you do, and how you run your business. This business, unfortunately, doesn't do the business part right. read more

We needed a number of big Doug fir and Oaks, including a tricky mix of an Oak and Fir with combined roots and merged lower trunks, for a house we just recently moved to. I got 3 estimates, and Samsara showed much more knowledge about what we needed; much more knowledgable than the other firms. Their bid was also somewhat lower than the others. We had to wait 90 days to get fit in, and when the date came, it was right in the 2024 wind and snow/ice storm. They were great communicators, got the job done much earlier than we expected given the emergency jobs they had. In short, they took a lot of wood and branches, rebalanced these big trees, raised the canopy on 2 others, and cleaned up nicely - a 5-hour job. Ben brought a huge crew and lots of equipment, and took good care about neighbors' yards and access. I highly recommend them, and they'll be our go-to tree resource from here on. read more

Our experience with Samsara Tree Care was outstanding. The initial response to our inquiry was quick and professional. Ben, showed up on schedule and was thorough and knowledgeable about the trees & shrubs we needed evaluated. I appreciated that his focus was on the health and safety of our trees, and that he didn't try to talk us into having more work done than was necessary. After going through the same site evaluation with two other companies, it was even more clear that Samsara was going to achieve the results we were looking for with this project. We considered quotes from three firms, and we decided to go with Samsara's because of their excellent reviews, the in-person site walk and their reasonable estimate. We are absolutely satisfied with the beautiful work the team did. We had two Acers (one a Japanese maple), a dogwood and several cedar trees trimmed. They were all artfully done and the crew were quick and left everything clean and beautiful. We also had two small trees and a shrub removed and another large old stump removed. These were done on a separate day but again the work was quick and clean. Efficient, safe, and WELL worth the price. A team just came out to remove a dead tree that had been planted very close to my house, and prune another on my property. It was a narrow space and a tight job, but they did fantastic work keeping my home safe while doing the work. We got cheaper bids, and I admit I got nervous spending the money - but when I saw exactly what they were doing, with what tools, I was like, of course. It costs money to do things RIGHT - a huge spider crane was needed to do the work without impacting my home. The crew was fast, courteous, and thoughtful in their work. We recently bought a new house in Vancouver and the neighbor has a huge, overgrown tree that is draped across our yard. We called Samsara, they came out promptly and gave us a quote that was very reasonable. They came out several weeks later, and did an amazing job! The whole experience was better than I could have expected. They were great at communicating both before and during the trimming. I probably have 10 good things to say about Samsara, but I'll start with one. They are EXCELLENT! On Tuesday Dec 27, around 10am, our giant 50-year-old Douglas Fir tree in the backyard fell and crushed our detached garage in half, yes, in half. (See pictures) My husband called a couple of arborists and Stephen showed up first to look at the damage. He gave us a quote the next day. His estimate was so professional and thorough, and we could send it to our insurance and got approved almost right away. They came out on Monday to remove it. We were IMPRESSED! There were 5 of them (one a woman, which I celebrate), one small Vermeer whatchamacallit with the grabber to remove the trunks and a couple chain saws. It took them less than 5 hours to get everything out and clean up! I thought it would take them 2 days. Jacob and Stephen (and their team) sure do know what they're doing. Think about it. When something like this happen (and I'm telling you Portlanders-with-big-trees-in-their-property out there, this might happen to you. Our tree looked solid and happy and we never thought it would ever fall down), what we need is someone to come out and tell us it's gonna be okay, help us work with the insurance, be empathetic and considerate on the day of the removal, and tell us what the heck happened to our beloved tree! When I was out there mourning our tree with a baffled look on my face, both Stephen and Jacob walked over and showed me the root rot, which might be one of the reasons it fell down and they are seeing other Douglas Fir of the same size falling down around Portland like they've never seen before. To hear from the arborists who saw big trees fall down all the time that our situation is epic, but also happening across town, is such a a relief. That being said, I say call them, use them, talk to them. They have a lot of knowledge and they are funny and kind. Which is what we need. Jacob of Samsara Tree Care is a true professional and also a very nice man to work with. We obtained quotes from three companies to maintain our very large Douglas Fir trees and several ornamental trees on our property. Jacob was by far the most thorough in walking the property with us and taking time to explain his recommendations for each of our trees. His quote was detailed and his pricing was very fair compared to the other two quotes we received. Our schedule had to be adjusted because of the January storms, but they were clear in communicating as the schedule changed. Jacob and his crew arrived yesterday and did a fantastic job! We walked the property when the crew arrived and confirmed the scope of work. Jacob and his crew were careful to protect our landscape lighting, deck and fences during their work. Our three large trees required a lot of thinning of dead branches and they were very careful when dropping large limbs with ropes. The crew was also very thorough in cleaning up debris at the end of the day. We requested the wood chips to spread around our property and they dropped the load in our driveway for us. They were on time, communicated well with us and did not try to upsell. It was obvious they love what they do and know their stuff. The Samsara team did an excellent and acrobatic job taking down two nuisance trees on our property line that were over 90 feet tall. A trusted friend recommended Samsara- I owe her a glass of wine! I have 2 massive, ancient, horse chestnut trees in the strip in front of my house, and after several near tragedies with limbs falling and miraculously not causing major damage, we knew they needed some serious attention. Ben came out and talked us through a plan that would balance risk mitigation and preserving the health and beauty of the trees. On the day of the work, the crew operated like a well oiled machine- everyone stayed productive with excellent communication. The equipment was all top notch, and the "spider lift" was amazing to watch as it swiveled and maneuvered up in the canopy 50 feet above the ground. It somehow folded up small enough to go up our driveway so they could work on the tree from a different angle. The crew was kind enough to trim up a few branches I needed to support my plum trees, and even bucked the one heavy limb they removed, so we could split it for firewood.
