Came here last week Tuesday for trivia and out was a great time! Geeks who drink host trivia night here every Tuesday and it's a lot more different than the other trivia nights we have been to. The questions are spaced out so you have time to chill and talk with friends, but dang they are hard! The food here is what did it for me. This local brewery has a good variety of beers to cater to a wide range of palates. Their staple brews such as the Kewalos Cream Ale and Cocoweizen are now readily available in cans for purchase at different places on island. Last night, it wasn't at all crowded considering it was a Saturday, but there have been a few times that I've gone here when it was more challenging to find a spot to sit. We had a harder time finding parking! There were 8 of us in our party, and we found a table easily. They had about 4 limited release beers, including Pussy Grabs Back, a pale ale. Easy to drink, and paired well with the butternut squash flatbread and beer mac and cheese that we ordered. My brother-in-law ordered the sliders. He said the pork was good, but would have preferred if they had toasted the buns. One of the other guys in our group ordered the jalapeño popper mac and cheese, and he thought it was a little mild and could have used some more kick. Honolulu Beerworks is a good spot to grab a pint with friends, especially if anyone in your party is intimidated by the craft beer scene. Their brews aren't too extreme or experimental. Come for the beer, stay for the company. Honolulu Beerworks brews its beer on site and while there are a number of craft beer breweries in the Kakaako neighborhood of Honolulu, I'm told it's the O.G. and it might be the best. For my money, this saison is one of the best I've had. The styles run the standard gamut from IPAs to brown ales, stouts and sours. There's a experimental batch available many weeks that runs out fast. What makes this place is the staff. Nick, Roxy & Henry among others are the friendliest crew you'll meet, and they somehow remembered my name (and my beer order??) every time I showed up during my months in Hawaii. The crowd here is a mix of visitor and local (although in O'ahu, you learn that even people who have lived on the island 10 years are wary of calling themselves "local"). Food menu is limited but exactly what you want when drinking good beer. Can't go wrong with the bacon mac & cheese. Vibe is picnic-table casual--seating is both outdoors and indoors, with the indoor still being mostly open air. Covid precautions are standard and adhered to: staff wear masks, etc. Their system of starting a tab when you walk in makes the entire process of ordering easier. Enjoy! read more

My friend wanted to check out a local craft brewery and picked Honolulu Beerworks. We went on a Wednesday around 5:30pm. They do not have any reserved/free parking stalls so you have to park on the street. Street parking is free after a certain time (either 6 or 6:30) so we only had to feed the meter for a little while. When we arrived, it was slow and picked up by the time we left (7pm). The ambiance was homey and casual and I thought it was a great environment for grabbing drinks after work. We ordered a flight of tasters ($2/each = $12 total). In my picture, from left to right, we ordered Pussy Grabs Back, Hot Scotch Ale, Just the Spruce Tip, CocoWeizen, Pia Mahi'a Honey Citrus Saison, and a Kewalo's Cream Ale. My friend and I are fans of fruitier beers so we enjoyed Just the Sprice Tip and Pussy Grabs Back. The Kewalo's Cream Ale was light and refreshing. The Hot Scotch Ale is good only as a sampler unless you want 16 oz of spice! My friend thought the CocoWeizen was too coconut heavy and that the Pia Mahi'a was good but not memorable. For food, we ordered Carolina Pulled Pork Sliders ($10.50), Smokin Ahi Dip ($8), and All Mixed Up Greens ($10). While all three dishes were surprisingly portioned well for the price, the taste was not there. But after all, this is a craft brewery, not a restaurant. The sauce and the pork on the sliders lacked flavor so although it was a lot of food, I couldn't enjoy it. My friend ate the other two dishes and shared similar sentiments. Our service was also terrible. The server could not stop socializing with her friend and therefore was ridiculously slow and had to be asked for everything. My Wednesday after-work hangout. My only after work hangout. Great beer, great service, and their mixed greens salad with chicken or bacon are one of my favorites, of anywhere. No skimping on the bacon here. The Reuben Panini, Mac n' Cheese dishes, and Flatbreads are good too but the salad is I'm taking one home too, good. I love the music played there (Pandora Classic Rock) and they always accommodate my choice of TV channel to watch if I request it. They also have a few secret and convenient parking spots that I won't divulge. I just wish they would serve French fries because I'm not a big potato chip fan. read more

Here we go, again.... we are on another beer crawl in the Kaka'ako neighborhood. Through a previous review (Aloha Beer Company), I mentioned that this neighborhood is steeped in Hawaiian brewing history and that there are 5 craft breweries within a 0.5-mile radius of our home. IMHO, the close proximity of all of these craft breweries spells "D-A-N-G-E-R" to my waistline as it causes me to take longer and more intense walking sessions and of course, well off from our intended plant-based diet. But, recently, we've been on a pastrami or Reuben sandwich crave. Our cravings were further fueled by a discussion of the upcoming opening of Los Angeles' Famous Canter's Deli in Las Vegas with a fellow Yelper and then...Elite T. Anthony N posted a review and luscious pictures of Honolulu Beerwork's pastrami Reuben. Well, that really did it and we went out to try it out for ourselves. Honolulu Beerworks has been on my bookmark list from earlier this year since I've seen many Yelpers checking for the Yelp Beer Club event and of course, on their own. The exterior of this business looks semi-industrial with a roll-up door at the front which they open to let the cool breezes in for diners and drinkers. They do have a working brewery behind their bar area and some amazing dishes that pair well with their 14 beers on tap and in cans. This brewpub welcomes groups and is pet-friendly. FOOD & BEVERAGE: -CoCoWeisen -Kewalos Cream Ale -Sheltered Bay IPA -South Shore Stout -Smokin' Ahi Dip: Creamy smoked ahi (tuna) dip served with local made toasted baguette slices. It was flavorful but mild in comparison to the other more hearty and solid food items. -Bavarian Soft Pretzels: 3 hot from the oven pretzels were served with house made South Shore Stout grainy mustard and BW's signature Point Panic Ale cheese fondue. Between the 2 appetizers that we tried, this appetizer is a must order and repeat. -South Street Pastrami Reuben: Pastrami, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing served on local made marble rye. The marble rye bread made this sandwich lean more to its traditional or classic preparation. The Panini press of the bread slices gave it a grill-toasted texture which balanced the tender pastrami while the sauerkraut, Russian dressing and melted Swiss cheese provided additional textural and flavor components. IMHO, this Reuben hit the flavor notes that we've searched for at our local brew pubs. -BBQ Beef Brisket Mac + Cheese: Dinner special which was hearty, cheesy and well seasoned with BBQ sauced tender beef brisket. This casserole was topped with crisp breadcrumbs. All of the flavors complemented the beers that we drank. It's a large enough serving to be shared. -Italian Hoagie: This was a behemoth of an Italian deli-style "sandwich". The locally made Italian roll had a thin soft crust and its soft interior was perfect for absorbing the fresh flavors of the lettuce, tomatoes, mayo and red vinaigrette of its garnish. There were generous thinly slices of Genoa salami, capicola, Black Forest ham and provolone cheese. This was another great example of complementary flavors to beer. As I mentioned, this is a behemoth or ginormous sandwich which is perfect for a hangry person or group share. -Carolina Pulled Pork Sliders: 3 slow roasted pork sliders topped with cooling coleslaw were ordered. The flavorful, moist and extremely tender pork was braised in HB's Pia Mahi'ai (Citrus Saison) and sauced with mustard based BBQ sauce. Crisp cool coleslaw provided another textural dimension to the soft BBQ and slider bun. Service was friendly and welcoming. When we arrived, this brewpub had just finished their lunch service and was changing out into their dinner menu. We chose a picnic-style seating arrangement and stayed until their Tuesday Trivia Night started. By that time, we were full and our thirsts had been satisfied with HB's brews. Oh boy, where do I even begin with Honolulu Beerworks? Let's just say that if you're looking for a place to drown your sorrows, you might want to steer clear of this joint. It used to be a fun indie bar that was great for small groups. Now it's sadder than the potholes on H1. First of all, the beer is about as flat as a pancake. I'm pretty sure the bartender just poured a can of Bud Light into a dirty glass and called it a day. And don't even get me started on the "craft" beers they claim to make in-house. I've had more flavorful tap water. The decor is a mishmash of tacky Hawaiian souvenirs and outdated sports memorabilia. It's like they raided a thrift store and a tourist gift shop and just slapped everything on the walls. I wouldn't be surprised if they had a velvet Elvis painting hanging up somewhere. But the real kicker is the service. It's like the staff was hand-picked from the DMV for their ability to move at a snail's pace and show zero emotion. I'm pretty sure I saw a tumbleweed blow by the bar while I was waiting for my drink. We went there as part of an organized bar crawl, and the place was deserted at 9:30 on a Saturday. Unsurprisingly, they didn't honor the drink special from the official bar crawl, and they refused to pour us a second drink because the sever "overheard someone mention being drunk". We were sitting together at one of the picnic tables minding our own business, but sure, we must have been the loudest there (since we were the only ones there). Michael's is a terrible server, and probably shouldn't be working in the industry (and don't worry, all of us work at other establishments so we know the standard. You're just lazy). So if you're in the mood for lukewarm beer, outdated decor, and service that'll make you feel like you're waiting in line at the DMV, then by all means, give Honolulu Beerworks a try. Just don't say I didn't warn you. Skip it and stick to the other bars in Kakaako. read more

I stopped by here earlier today with my wife for some beers. We arrived at Honolulu Beerworks at around 11:15 AM or so and since they had just opened, it wasn't really busy at all. The inside here is large and quite open with a large concrete bar at the back and then seating throughout the rest. They also have some outdoor seating complete with string lights. Since we were here in December it was decorated for Christmas and our favorite decoration was the keg tree that they had. It was stacks of kegs wrapped in garland, Christmas lights and ornaments in the shape of a tree. We had good service the entire time that we were here and both of our bartenders were incredibly friendly and nice. As I often do whenever I visit a new brewery, I decided to go with a flight here. At Honolulu Beerworks you can choose up to 6 different beers, all individually priced, and I ended up choosing 5. On this day I went with the Kewalos Cream Ale, Hop Island IPA, CocoWeizen, South Shore Stout and Fra-gee-lay (espresso stout). The first beer that I tried was the Kewalos Cream Ale. It probably wouldn't have been my first choice in beers but they had coasters with it on them so I assume it's one of their most popular ones. It tasted a lot like a norma Pilsner to me with a crisp and clean finish. Second was the Hop Island IPA and you get some hops on the nose as you bring it up for a sip. It has some punch you in the face hops so there is no mistaking this as an IPA and then the finish was a bit bitter for me. Up third was the Cocoweizen and you could smell the toasted coconut bringing it up for a drink. It doesn't disappoint in that area with a nice mix of coconut and wheat flavor with the toasted coconut lasting through the finish. Fourth was the South shore Stout and on this beer you get the dark malts right from the start to the finish with a bit of the bitterness lingering past the finish. Last but certainly not least was the Fra-Gee-Lay. It was a really good beer with lots of nice spices and then an espresso type flavor to it as well. Out of the bunch the cocoweizen was easily my favorite and I got a 6 pack of it to go, but the Fra-gee-lay was good as well. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. I really enjoyed trying their beers and some of their food looked good as well. read more

We hit up Honolulu Beerworks after a trip to the beach. Neither of us were super hungry, but a nice cold beverage sounded divine. We parked on the street, which took a couple of minutes, but no big deal. The staff greeted us immediately, let us choose our table, shared the specials, and left us to our own devices. First things first, beer. Our server informed us that one beer was not available for the flight, but offered to bring us samples of it, which we eagerly accepted. My friend had a flight-this was a bit challenging to build simply because three of the beers she wanted to try were sold out. I had a single glass. I enjoyed my beers, the flight was ok, definitely had ones we preferred over others. For food we got the smoked ahi spread, pretzels, and mixed nuts. GET THE BEERCHEESE for the pretzels. The spicy mustard was good, but that beer cheese was better. The smoked ahi spread was ok, I think I would have preferred celery and crackers to the toasted baguette. Also, GET THE MIXED NUTS! I was in Honolulu for an interview and stopped here off a recommendation from a buddy. It didn't disappoint. The staff were all super friendly which made the experience all the more enjoyable. They have a great selection of beers and the food was solid (I had the Rueben). The locals who were in their drinking we also very friendly and I had such a great time I went back again before I flew back to the mainland. This review is of their COVID-19 sit-down service. Wow. We felt completely safe dining here. We chose to sit outside, but we would have felt equally safe eating inside. Menus can be accessed via a QR code that is displayed on your table. Same GREAT beers and the sandwiches and that you've come to love. Waitresses were in masks and always observing good hygiene. Great beer, cool location. We came into Honolulu Beerworks for lunch and had a great lunch. The beers were very good, I had the Greenway IPA which had all New Zealand hops. A first for me, and I loved it. Hoppy in a different way then PNW hops. Food was very good as well. My only complaint is that the spice from the wasabi aioli and the horseradish in the dip were negligible. It would have been nice to have just a hint of it, if not more. It was as if it wasn't in the food, which was still very good. Oh yea, my bread was purple!! The location was pretty cool too. We sat in the side yard which had great art and lots of plants. The whole point of travel is that you get to discover gems like this in your aimless wanderings. I literally floated into Honolulu Beerworks armed with time to kill and little else. I certainly had no expectations about the taps. I really only expected to get the measure of the place over a halfway decent pint of a local brew and then wander the slowly gentrifying neighborhood of Kaka'ako, maybe sit in the shade of a Flame of the Forest. After almost two hours, what I discovered was that not only had I stumbled into a diamond mine of thoughtfully executed, deeply flavorful, and finely balanced craft beers, but that I'd fallen hopelessly in love with the place. I quickly switched to flights when I realized that I had to try all the beers on tap. Slowly and deliberately working my way through the limited releases, it was one charming revelation after another. The Intergalactic Party Punch was a New England IPA that carelessly flashed a voluptuous décolletage of a nose redolent with ripe tropical fruit and bright citrus aromas. The You'll Never Go Back was a black IPA so smooth, yet bursting at the seams with IPA character, I was bereft when I drained the last drop. I was pleasantly surprised when the Pussy Grabs Back...did, the hops were herbaceous and leafy, with accents of cilantro, parsley, fresh chili pepper without the heat. The flatbread with pork was a pleasant counterpoint and let me back down to terra firma gently. There were other hearty menu items from the kitchen that I didn't get to try. You won't have to chance upon Honolulu Beerworks like I did. You can head in with confidence to experience a local craft brewery experience like few others. This place was put together with integrity, run with love, and opened daily with pride in O'ahu and the skill and craftsmanship that make Honolulu Beers Work! We were delighted to be able to grab beer and dinner after a long day at work. This place is a staple and has been at the helm for developing craft beer in the state of Hawaii. Tonight we ordered the Mediterranean chicken flatbread, pretzels (always with the beer cheese!), and the Reuben. All were super tasty. Pretzels here have always been my go to! The Reuben was thinly sliced and perfect - I always hate it when it's fatty and chewy. And for the beer - the REAL reason to come!!! This round we enjoyed the Pali Pils, hop island IPA, Sheltered Bay IPA. Pali pils had a beautiful clarity and hit the spot when I was yearning for my first round. The batch of hop island I had was dry hopped extra and hit my IPA sweet tooth - super dank, medium body... honestly the best hop island I've ever had. The sheltered bay IPA is more on the malty IPA side which is nostalgic as I remember IPA's from the 90's - yet it's smoother and even more crushable. This brewery just keeps getting better and better. Why buy some mediocre macro beer when we have this gem in our neighborhood? read more

Really great taproom vibes down in kakaako. Street parking is p easy in this area, but if you'd rather garage park there's a couple by SALT. The space is surprisingly large, with two garden outdoor seating areas, a bar and some hightop and normal seating. The beer list is pretty extensive with a range awesome stuff. We particularly liked their limited release collabs! Would def want to come back, the menu items looked good so I'll want to give those a shot as well. Great tasting stout, their cocoweizen was great with subtle coconut flavor. The beermade Mac and cheese was excellent, crispy on top with great cheese flavor and texture on the macaroni. The roast beef dip sandwich however was flavorless, the dip didn't bring much to the sandwich besides giving it some needed moisture. If I lived nearby this would absolutely be one of my regular spots! Beer is good, the space is great, there are games to play. My only bummer is the plastic utensils used for food. I can understand using compostable plates, but it would be nice if they had reusable or compostable utensils. I have been coming here since day one. Great location on Cooke Street. The place is open air and has a fun atmosphere. Sometimes parking can be a challenge, recommend just take an Uber. If you Uber, you can drink more and not worry about getting home safe. They have really put the focus on improving the process of mastering the making of great beer. They have different award winning beer, so recommend going to Beerworks and getting hooked. It is nice that they continue to change the beer menu and customers get a chance to try different creations. I always get the Rueben and have never been disappointed. It is the perfect size for a sandwich and always prepared perfectly. The staff is always so nice and processional and never disappoint. Located on Cooke Street, behind Bike Factory. No dedicated parking as far as I know, so you'll have to find metered street parking. When I walked in, I was a little confused because there's no hostess who seats you and none of the servers greeted us. We kind of awkwardly stood around until we figured out there were open tables on the outside. Thankfully it wasn't raining, because there's no roof or tarp type cover outside. We came here on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy indoors. We didn't have a problem finding a table outside though, but it smells kinda funky out there. I don't drink beer (I know), but they do offer their own house made brews here. They offer cheap flights and also offer a very short (4 choices) wine menu. No mixed drinks/cocktails as far as I could see. Sodas come in a can--personal pet peeve. Food: - Cooke Street Tacos: pork tacos with ranch slaw, salsa, and guacamole. These were really good. The slaw/salsa/guac toppings make for a really refreshing taco. - Bavarian soft pretzels: served with beer cheese fondue and stout mustard. I only tried a small piece, but these were really good with the cheese dip and mustard. The pretzels were really fresh and hot out of the oven. - Smokin ahi dip: served with sliced toasted baguette. This was good! Like a smoky tuna salad. Try adding this to the tacos. - Beermade mac & cheese: this was my favorite of all of the things I tried. The crispy panko topping was awesome. Overall, I'd definitely come back. I would like if they had a few more food offerings though, like flatbread pizza or burgers. The food we ordered was really reasonably priced, everything between $6-8.50. Service was good and attentive. I still prefer Real Gastropub overall, but this place has potential. read more

Great spacious brewery to hangout at with a large group of friends! There is plenty of seating indoors and outdoors, great ambiance with plenty of hipster views, and an awesome selection of beer! There is a beautiful wall decorated with plenty of green plants, perfect for picture taking! My favorite beer was the Coco-Hefeweizen, which was really unique and great for any wheat beer lover out there, like me! I was also interested in purchasing a "Honolulu Beerworks" Tank but it was $29. Pretty pricey for my liking! If you have time, be sure to walk around the neighborhood since there are plenty of beautiful art installations that are worth checking out! read more

I was going out with my buddy Kyle and he suggested here. One of the few breweries on Oahu. Great vibe!!! The workers are all friendly! Met one of the bartenders, and I can't remember her name, but she lived in North Park so we talked story about my neighborhood...LOL! They have a number of beer selections...my favorite was "Rye Not"...yes, I ordered it because of the catch name, but it also is a great brew! I had the Saison first and I liked it, but the Rye for me was the better one. Everyone has their own tastes for beer. I actually came here three times! The second was during Honolulu's Night Market, and then one more time before leaving for the mainland....lol...trying to talk local! The food isn't bad either. I really like their mac n cheese! The salad with cranberries was really good too! The tuna app with bread slices was weak but the sliders were pretty tasty! Overall, this is one of my favorite places now and I can't wait to visit again when I return. read more

4th time to visit this wonderful brewery with not your typical bar food. First a shoutout to Sammy, her service was outstanding. Our previous server, Sam wasn't there to spoil us, but in the same excellence, Sammy was very professional and very knowledgeable with the food and adult beverages. Happy hour pretzel is still a must-ard and homemade cheese sauce tops it off. First time to try the portobello sandwich... WinnahZ! A multitude of flavor bombs go off in your mouth. Good atmosphere for a chill night. Good beer and good food. I definitely recommend the smoked ahi dip & mac and cheese. It was super good.. I wish I ordered my own haha.
