great catfish, fries and hushpuppies. Love this place!

Driving thru Denton we had to try this place because we were looking for crawfish, and it had good reviews. This place is right smack downtown in a historic district, the building is very old and full of Cajun picnic type of charm, you seat yourself in or outside and when ready go up to window inside to order then they bring it to the table, coming into Texas from Minnesota we were really excited to try fried jalapeños and fried pickles and their hush puppies from their happy hour apps that were from 4:00 pm -6:00pm half price, yummm and when they sat those huge portions in front of us we went to hoggie heaven, big portions, big. By the way the best fried pickles and jalapeños we have EVER had, the hush puppies were good, we also got 2# of boiled crawfish that came with some potatoes and corn, hmmmmm well right off there was a very strong smell of tobasco or Louisiana hot sauce. I am not a fan but they were still good and fresh and very spicy, the potatoes I did not like at all and hubby did and the corn did not like and hubby did not like that either. Just absorbed too much of the hot sauce.. I like Non acidy heat like toni's or cyan. Well then everyone was ordering street tacos because it was taco Thursday so we got the fish and the shrimp sooo very unique they used super fresh soft corn tortillas 2 on each soo very good they did not fall apart, two corn tortillas who thought. I love their oyster po boy. So freaking good. The oysters are always fresh and clean. I love the blackened catfish and the dressing they use on their salads is amazing. I gave it 4 stars cuz the girls at the register are never paying attention to customers waiting to order. I always am standing there waiting for someone to notice me. My family and I decided to venture out to a new place for dinner and boy are we glad we decided to stop here! Met the owner Sam, super nice guy!! Just tried this place for the first time and it was great. I'm from south Louisiana and am really picky about my Cajun food, but Hoochies' gumbo can't be beat. None of that burnt taste to their roux that you get in many places. Just home cookin' here. read more

First time trying. Great atmosphere and smells like seafood. Impressed on decor We went to have fried Shrimp. Nothing grilled or oyster etc. Fried shrimp. There is not a lot of seafood in Denton or a pappadeaux Etc. The corn meal based shrimp batter was weird. I like it more crispy, I think this soft batter style is not for me and would not eat it again. The shrimp itself tasted nice and fresh. I also ordered a shrimp Poyboy but was give a catfish. I tried it since I did not want to wait. The batter as the same way as the Shrimp. Need to try more of th grilled options if we come back. read more

First time customer.. very busy so excited to try it. Ask the cashier if I could get the shrimp tacos fried her response was "if we weren't so busy I would ask the cooks but since we are busy I'm not going to ask them" so instead I just ordered the FRIED half shrimp basket. my boyfriend ordered the fried catfish. Didn't wait too long which was nice. Our food was hot but VERY bland and the batter was thick. Was really hoping for flavorful food. The catfish was not seasoned well either. Very disappointing. also side note. There was a variety of ages there including kids but one of the waitresses had on half a pair of shorts. Coming from Louisiana, I was looking forward to a nice lunch. Unfortunately I was disappointed. The fried catfish hardly had any seasoning (it's rare that I salt anything, but I did salt the fried catfish). The Hoochie platter was good size, but several of the shrimp came out chewy and rubbery. The hush puppies were ok. The fried shrimp was over cooked and heavily battered; and needed seasoning. I feel as if I'm being generous giving them 3 stars. At least the service was OK. read more

GREAT PLACE!!! Seldom does one find a GREAT value and ambiance like Hoochies. It's like someone transported a Cajun/Creole hole in the wall along the Texas coast (Houston, Galveston, Port Arthur, etc...) from the 50's & 60's and placed in current day Denton. Hoochies does not try to be more than it is which is a relief in today's world. It's just a fun place with great service and food at reasonable prices! If you live in the Southlake/Trophy Club/Grapevine area it is WELL WORTH the short trip down 377 to Denton & just 3 blocks east of the Denton Square on Hickory! Then to top it off every Thursday evening in the summer there is a free concert on the Denton Square where the kids can run wild while you can sip on a cold one! read more

Placed a order for my family. We purchased a shrimp boil, gumbo, shrimp po boy, cornbread, and a shrimp and oyster combo. The only thing tasty was the cornbread! My niece found a weird curly plastic object in her gumbo. The shrimp was cut in half, to make it look like a full plate. The shrimp boil didn't really have flavor they just threw a LOT of pepper on them. The bread on the poboy was too thick!!! They also cut the shrimp in half for the poboy.... You only get two cut to make 4 We will not return. Great staff though read more

Not great. Ordered for pickup. When I got there, in my mask, no one else had one on. I ordered fried catfish, shrimp, and pickles. All were soggy, which one could certainly expect from takeout, but none of it tasted very good, especially the pickles ( yuck). I've eaten there before, before the coronavirus, and it was good. Didn't think we would find such a great Cajun seafood restaurant in Denton, TX but gosh darn, we found one! I had the best shrimp poboy and the hubs had fresh fish blackened. Amazing food, the cooks kept coming out and talking to us and we loved the attention! We also had a great beer on tap that was a toasted porter that rocked! We will be back!!! read more

I went there with the husband and son and we were pleasantly suprised. Both my husband and son ordered the po boys, one shrimp and one catfish. The best part of everyone getting something different is trying a little of everything. Both sandwhiches were delicious, hot and crispy on the catfish and shrimp, fresh lettuce and tomato, warm crysty bread...what's not to love. I had the grilled fish of the day, and it was awesome. I think it was haddock and it was perfectly cooked. The light butter and caper sauce was such a nice touch. I had slaw and rice as my sides and they did not dissapoint. The slaw came in a huge bowl large enough for everyone a the table to have a sample and still have lefovers. The rice was a nice white rice with plenty of extra flavors (celery, onion) to give it a nice boost. I don't know. When your favorite thing at a seafood joint is the boneless wings that kind of tells you everything you need to know. Very limited menu IMO. I've been here a couple of times and the crab legs are all right but nothing different from any seafood chain, the tacos are underwhelming as hell, and too much stuff is fried IMO. plus, as busy as this place is, they really need a host. Seating is open and cut throat. People have no qualms about undercutting groups that are waiting for tables, and tons of group tables are often occupied by just two people. read more

Hoochies - Their food is off the chain . If you haven't eaten there then you should . Don't let the name fool you , awesome atmosphere , very friendly staff , and the prices are cheap for the AAA quality of food that is served , the amount that is put on your plate . The owner is awesome as well . Plus. Live music on the weekends . A definite must go to place . Walk , drive , ride a bus or a bicycle if you have to . Trust me the place is well worth it . You will feel like you are at your best friends place and not want to leave . Lol ! They are located in Denton Texas on the main drag . On Hickory They made me feel exactly that way , when a friend and myself went there for the first time . We are definitely going to be repeat customers . Trying to understand the ratings on this site. Visited this restaurant with my family. The food is ok, servings seemed rather small, but this restaurant I think doesn't know what it wants to be. The meals are served with plastic ware yet are price to be with real dinnerware, not plastic cups and utensils, the pricing ifs rather high for barroom like tables and a ordering system that resembles fast food. (they requested a tip before the meal on the receipt as I ordered) The fish came on a large bed of rice and a salad that basically cover the plate. All served on a plastic plate. and the ice tea in a plastic cup. So the food was ok but not completely satisfying. Maybe this would fly in Seattle (by the sea) , but not in Denton, especially for college kids on a budget. Advice decide what you wan to be, pricy food in humble surrounds or just a fish shack which is what you are. read more

There are way to many great things to say about this place. I come in once a week simply for 1 reason and that's the $2 shrimp tacos on Tuesday and Thursday's, not to mention $1 lone star beer! I really tried. Thrice I did try, but the last two times were belly flops unfortunately. The hype of the "new and improved" hoochies only lasted for a month or two and quality of the dishes has begun to tailspin. The first time was good, the food seemed well seasoned enough yet the meals didn't match the price. There are loads of under-seasoned thick potato fries that create a mirage of substance. All battered/fried items have been lacking in seasoning and taste. The catfish is dreadful, we couldn't make our way through more than two dirty river- water bites. I'm sad because the service is good.The beignets are dense and lack a certain crispness and fluff that the traditional dessert is known for. The music is off, and there's random Thai items that don't belong on the menu. I do hope this restaurant stays in business and gets into a groove, but they aren't hitting the mark of New Orleans style restaurant. read more

Truly enjoyed Hoochie's at the old location. Great food and specials. And now at this new location, the food is still just as good BUT... 1 - The menu is very limited. Meaning you cannot substitute anything for the fries that come your entree. They insist on giving them to you as well. I tried to decline them and said I was fine paying the same price without the fries but they just told me "You have to get them." 2 - You can get half orders of items, which is great. But they do not offer any combo discounts for someone who might want 2 or 3 different fried items. So for a creature of habit like me who likes to get the same thing every time (half order of fried catfish, half order fried oysters, substitute hushpuppies for the fries) its become quite expensive and wasteful. What used to be about $15 ($10.95 for a 2 fried item combo plus the up charge to sub hushpuppies plus tax) is now about $20 ($6.95 for each half order of fried stuff plus a side order of hushpuppies plus tax). And I feel bad for having to toss two giant sides of fries that no normal person can eat in one meal. Having said all that, let me again say that the food is great. Best oysters in town, fresh or fried. Hushpuppies full of onions and flavor. And regardless of the very slight price increase at the new location, I can't endorse a place where its this difficult to order exactly what you want. read more
