I got my haircut there yesterday by Nickolas. It was my first time going to this salon but it's near my apartment so I thought I'd give it a try. When I walked in, I was given a look like "who are you and what do you want" until I said I had an appointment (I was about 15 minutes early) and asked if I could wait inside. When the haircut process started, he spent the entire time bragging about his high profile clients and past work with luxury brands. None of that is really the issue here, although off putting. The issue here is that I got *the* worst haircut of my life. I sat down and showed the attached screenshot, saying I'd like layers but I don't want much length taken off. I did say it would be okay to take off an inch or two, if necessary. I emphasized that I wanted a lot of layers because my hair is super thick and the straight across cut was making my hair look triangular. I'm not sure what was lost in translation but he proceeded to thin out my hair more than it has ever been thinned out in my life. He even kept joking as he was thinning it more and more that there was enough hair on the floor to make a small mattress. I am very shy and couldn't really do much but dissociate, smile, laugh, and tell myself it was going to be okay. He showed me the back of my head about halfway through and I noticed it was a very uneven straight across cut and that about 3-4 inches had been taken off. I was going to say something but before I could he said I'm going to add layers now and clean it up. So I said nothing. The rest of the haircut continued the same way. Each section getting thinned within an inch of its life and cut "straight across." At this point I started to think he thought layers meant thinning it out? I have no idea but I did show a reference photo. And I *never* asked to have my hair thinned. At no point during the haircut did he ever look at my hair from the front or cut from the front. He sat on a stool behind me the entire time with my face turned away from the mirror. He even trimmed my bangs/framing from the back. When he turned me around to look at the front, I was actually in disbelief. It was soooo jagged and crooked and uneven. It was way shorter than I wanted and it was clearly trying to be a straight across cut. It was so far off from what I had asked for that I actually was just hoping to get out of there as quickly as possible. After listening to him brag about all his high profile clients and the amazing experiences professionally and socially that he has apparently had, I was basically feeling gaslit into paying especially because the salon is so small and intimate that it's really a stressful environment to have a confrontation in. It wasn't until I got outside when it really set in. I actually do social media as a full time job so it's important that my hair looks at least normal. I am too scared right now to go in somewhere else to have it cleaned up because it's so short even when flat ironed right now. I haven't even tried washing it and seeing how short it's going to be when it air dries yet. My natural hair texture is very wavy... I'll attach a reference photo. The most shocking part of all of this is that he actually gave my his business card at the end to book with him again... All of this is to say, I would not recommend him at all to anyone ever. Maybe only business men that need a clean up in the area. He clearly doesn't know how to cut women's hair or maybe just doesn't know how to manage thick hair. In the past year, I've gotten nothing but quality haircuts from Gloria. We've always had great conversations when she's given me a haircut in the past few months since Ive been going to see her, which is the reason why this is a difficult review for me to write, since I had made reservations on Aug.19th, a full week ago, since today is Aug.26th. on the online website she uses for her clients to reserve their haircut appointments. When I went in today to get my haircut I was running a few minutes behind. But what happened next really surprised me. She had another client getting ready to sit down in the client seat to get their haircut, and Gloria looks at me as if she was surprised I was there. She then asked me did I have an appointment, because she never got it on her end. I pulled up the screenshot that showed that it was confirmed, and shows it tk her. But she then asked if I had received a confirmation via email. I had not, but wasn't aware that I had to receive one to confirm the appointment I had been waiting a week to get. She then said her next availability would be this Friday. I said I didn't know whether I had that time available and walked out extremely disappointed over the situation. When I got home about 15 mins later, and looked to see if there was any availability for this Friday on her booking website, it didn't show that. It told me September 9th would be the soonest available date. The error wasn't on my end, it was on the end of website that didn't reflect the confirmed appointment I had made a week ago. I feel like she could have done more on her end to make up for this, and she didn't. Very disappointing since I thought she was a great stylist and very personable prior to all of this. My stylist, Ari, had suggested I go for a Mandy Moore shag, and when she showed me a picture I kind of liked it. What I got instead was a lazy, asymmetrical, choppy bowl cut with bangs that had been hacked into a cross between Cleopatra and Mr. Spock. As loathe as I am to admit it, I cried for an hour after my appointment. I usually receive good haircuts from here (came here two times), but dropped by for a simple bang trim (from the SAME stylist), and it was completely chopped unevenly. I'm always hesitant to try out a new hair salon and stylist because I'm one of those people who had my friend do my hair for years. Today I went in for a cut and caramel balayage with Cherine. I LOVED her work and her. She has a great heart and helped me get my summer sun kissed hairdo that I wanted. My fiancé can't stop fussing over how good my hair looks! (It's been a bun for months because I hated it). She really listened to the things I wanted and explained the process thoroughly while giving me advice on shampoo to keep the color and hair vitamins for growing out my hair. I hesitate to write this because the team already gets so easily booked, but it's a must given how many compliments I've gotten since I started going to Hook & Scissor. I've struggled with a great many top notch (and top dollar) SF salons and stylists to get my color how I want it, and always have come up short. I have a ton of hair, and it takes forever to process/lift. My hair almost always came out a bit brassy, if not straight up orange. With Hook & Scissor, I finally have been able to get the ashy blonde I've been trying so hard to achieve for YEARS. If you're blonde, book an appointment with Sierra or Gloria. I've sent about 5 of my guy friends to Gloria for a cut and they've all had a great experience too. Just be specific about what you want/don't want, issues you've had in the past,, etc. They might not get it 100% where you want it on the first go, but guaranteed you'll get there on your 2nd or 3rd appointment. read more

I got a decent haircut but was disappointed. It is not one of the better cuts I've had, which is fine because it still looks good. However the stylist (who already mentioned she didn't want to be there because of a long night last night, I get it you're young and partied but don't complain about it to your client who is spending $$$ for you to put sharp things near their face?) asked if I wanted to forgo the wash part of the haircut. That's the most relaxing part but I assumed (because we had talked briefly about how I was on a budget)this would lower the cost of my cut. That was wrong, so not only did I pay full price (and still have to tip full price because you know, it's the city and things are expensive) but I didn't get that most relaxing and wonderful part of a haircut to boot. I'd recommend the salon because it seemed nice enough but I don't think I'll be returning. Moral: never assume less services=less $ because then you are just left disappointed with the end result even if it turned out generally okay. read more

Adorable salon! The appointment process is easy from their website, and the lead times weren't 3+ weeks like other salons in the city. The interior is fresh and modern, and they offer you wine or beer (omg), even if you're just waiting for someone to get their hair cut. It's a little hard to find (see one of the pics.. it's behind the statue) and pretty small (only a couple washing/cutting stations) but with an appointment I can't see this being an issue. My husband got his hair cut by Gloria and she did a great job. He has unruly blonde curls and she cleaned them up very nicely. read more

I recently moved back to the Bay Area from New York and was looking for a new place to cut my hair. I have very short hair that requires a cut every 6-8 weeks. I wanted to try out Hook & Scissor because of the reviews but also because it's a women-owned business. This is important to me. I was skeptical at first because the rate for short hair is $40 pre-tip for 30 minutes. Perhaps that's more for dudes with short hair? I was used to paying $55++ pre-tip in NY for a good cut and it usually took an hour. Got an appointment with Cherine and she definitely exceeded my expectations. I showed her pictures of my cut and she proceeded to execute it flawlessly. She asked the right questions and I was able to communicate exactly how I want my hair cut. All in all, it took 45 mins and it was perfection. Highly recommended for people who are picky about their haircut! I have curly hair (a mix of 2C and 3A) and I had an appointment with Ari for a slightly above the shoulder-length shaggy cut, bangs, and a subtle dye. After three years of showing the same reference picture to three different stylists and three years of stylists telling me my hair was too dark to lift to a subtle red without bleaching, I FINALLY got the haircut I wanted! A short hair cut is hard to get right, and it's even harder when your stylists are scared of your curls. I came in and told Ari what I wanted and she immediately got to work. She was very accommodating and worked very hard to get the exact look I wanted. I could not be happier with my hair. Not super happy with the service I received yesterday. I came in with very long hair that had not been processed or dyed in over a year. Roots were showing a ton (med brown) and blonde ends. I asked for an all over light - medium brown, with partial caramel highlights and face framing curtain bangs. I asked that only about 3 inches be cut off the end of my hair. I have been growing it for a while. Instead I received hair that is 3-4 different colors with the ends being the dullest blonde/brown I have ever seen and the roots being copper colored, so the roots are showing just as much as when I came in with natural roots. Almost looks worse than when I came in. My hair was cut from my lower back to shoulder length, which is not at all what I requested. Instead of curtain bangs I received half-heartedly cut 1 inch short pieces on either side of my face. And the cut itself is so uneven I still have long strands sticking out. I'm so so so disappointed and this type of service is why I am so hesitant to visit salons. Dishing out tons of money for hair that looks worse than when I came in. read more

The girl was super friendly and switched my stylist to better suit the appointment change. The second time I desperately needed all of the hair cut, so explained what I wanted (less fluff) and she took her time and really did the perfect cut for my thick, coarse, wavy hair. Sierra was my stylist. I got there early and watched the end of three male haircuts. Gentlemen, they have the new haircuts down!!! They also have a few secrets to show you about keeping your high top fresh. I also saw what they did at the back of the neck, very contemporary and fresh! Back to me, and what I was looking for. I just moved to SF, from South Bay. My hair has decided to become wavy and I am never one to fight Mother Nature. I decided to ditch the A-Line and go for layers. I also have a ton of hair, so this could easily have gone bad...like " looking like a Christmas tree bad". I knew this going in... Sierra, knew exactly how much weight my cut needed to go-with-the-flow. Wow! The back looked amazing! She did a great job with the face fringe that would look great at the gym too, when I tie my hair up. The charge for the cut was really reasonable, as I needed an entirely new style. I paid $55 for a long style. My hair was medium length, but a hot mess. This style is a grow-out style. I'll be back sometime in November. I am so happy that I found this new, hip salon. Gloria took all the inches of my dark roots and transformed them to a bright blonde faster than I can say Hook & Scissor! I haven't been this happy with my hair color and cut since I've lived in SF. I am thrilled that Hook & Scissor has appeared and is so accessible for drivers and walkers and bikers alike! It even has a parking lot right underneath so I can get my hair done on my way home from work in the east bay!
