She told me she could do it, but unfortunately, it became clear during the haircut that she did not know how to achieve the style. She cut my hair short and then tried to use a hairdryer and comb to make it look like the pictures, but it did not work. I showed her the reference photos again and asked if she could get help from someone else. She asked a colleague, who showed her how to cut the style, but she still seemed unsure how to do it. Eventually, the owner had to step in and finish the haircut for me. For a long-hair haircut that cost about $100 total ($85 for the haircut plus a $15 tip), I was very disappointed with the experience. At this price point, I expected the stylist to be able to achieve the hairstyle she had confirmed she could do, or to be upfront from the beginning if it was outside her expertise. Unfortunately, based on my experience, it was not worth the price or time.

As an infrequent yelper and former business owner, I'm truly only writing this yelp as a last resort. Despite reaching out to the Edo salon staff via email and phone in an attempt to provide my feedback, it's been a couple weeks and I have yet to get a response from Jayne or Chri. As a business owner, I cared a great deal about customer service and while I see all the nice reviews here, it's important to know about the areas your business can improve. As Edo has now lost me as a client, they may want to learn from what happened. I saw Emily for hair color twice prior to my July 30 appointment. I liked her a lot! I believed we got along nicely, connected as mothers of young children, and I was pleased with the results. She gave me exactly what I requested. She is talented at what she does, I love the organic hair color, but I now know she also lacks compassion and customer service skill. I have never been made to feel so awful and humiliated by a service provider in the 25 years I have been paying for $200+ hair color appointments. On July 30, I had a heck of a day and right before I left for my scheduled afternoon appointment, made specifically for this day, my 12th wedding anniversary, my younger son with special needs had a particularly rough tantrum that made me leave the peninsula for SF a few minutes later than I had planned. As I got on the road, I called Edo salon to let them know, out of courtesy, I was running 10-15 minutes late. The receptionist sweetly told me it was fine, to come still, and that she would see me soon. So why did the receptionist tell me it was fine to come? Well, as I was parking on Haight in front of the salon, after my 45 minute drive from the peninsula, I got a call from that same receptionist that Emily was now cancelling my appointment. I walked into the salon bc I had just parked and was there. Emily was no where to be seen. I begged the receptionist to ask Emily to reconsider due to the tantrum and the anniversary. At this point it was 17 minutes after my scheduled appointment time. I was there exactly when I said I would be. I get that I was late. I'm not an entitled person. I get that it doesn't HAVE to matter to people in any service industry whether my special needs child had a tantrum, that I had a terrible day, that this was the THING I had been looking forward to all week, that I had not even brushed my hair and was scheduled to celebrate my 12th anniversary in a few hours with my husband over dinner in SF. I know you are running a business and that sometimes you have to draw a line - but boy, why me? I tipped well, I was respectful, I did everything I could to be courteous. How many times have I watched people show up so late, rudely with out calling ahead, get taken by the stylist anyways and that's why I'm being taken 20 minutes later. It happens ALL THE TIME. But most of all: 1. When I called, why did Edo tell me to come? 2. Why couldn't Emily walk out and tell me how sorry she was to my face? This felt so humiliating to have the young, sweet receptionist running down to ask Emily 2x bc she felt bad for me (in tears of rage and humiliation) only to return with the unwavering no (x2!) 3. Why leave it to the young receptionist to be stuck In the middle? 4. Why add insult to injury when telling me the reason is bc I was double booked (not my fault) and that if I want to wait an hour I can pay $75 for a blowout! Thanks, but no thanks. 5. Do I get that same consideration when you are running late? Do I get to dock you the extra babysitter dollars I had to pay when I sat 15 minutes waiting for you when you were running late at my first appointment? ***** SO...that's my rant. It is what it is. Edo will continue to run a successful business and I actually wish you all the best. You are a great looking salon and you do very nice work. I am going back to my old salon and I am of course going to be fine - it's just hair after all. But just know, that day, unlike the mission of most salons to make the customer feel just a little better than they did upon walking in, Emily on behalf of Edo salon made me feel rotten. I got in the car and sobbed bc that day, my appointment and the subsequent rejection symbolized the giant house of cards that my schedule is and how hard it is to attempt and be successful at self care. So in the interest of self preservation and going where I'm wanted as a customer, I will not continue as a client at Edo salon, because of Emily's behavior that day and also because no one higher up bothered to follow up despite my attempt to give feedback, and I most certainly will not recommend Edo to anyone I care about. read more

I am about two hours out of the salon. I have gone to EDO many a time. I loved having Justin as my stylist when I did my do' straight and long. I have to admit, I went on a year hiatus to go to my friend's salon Amon Adora, which is great. Angie knows how to take care of long curly hair. But I like to spice up my sweet every now and then. I decided to get a haircut from someone who has a "flower " within her name, by a suggestion of a friend. Not here to hate on that person, because she was nice enough. I have grown my hair for almost two years with trims every 5 to 6 months... my hair can get frizzy so having it long is a GOOD thing to bring weight on the curls... I told the stylist to take off about 3 to 4 inches and she said, "wow that looks like a lot." Appreciative of her saying that, I said, "yah you are right...maybe not that much..." I backed that up by saying I definitely didn't want short hair because of the frizz. And she told me she would not do that at all. Well an hour later my hair barely goes beneath my shoulders. She just kept thinning and thinning... she was almost in a trance... Being a shy person to begin with... I knew it was bad bad bad, but didn't say anything. And yes, after I noticed that it was getting too short... I should have freaked out and said something. But my nature is to go home and cry, which I did. My hair ended up shorter than what I had originally suggested... of course... right? I couldn't believe it, but it was true. I say my hair is about 6 to 7 inches shorter. I paid the $80 without a word... but I will never go back to her again. The cut wasn't worth the money and pain it caused me... and I can say that I will never stray from my norm again. ________ Update: I received an apology from an EDO owner about my bad experience. I always love my co-worker's haircuts and after a disastrous experience at another salon, I decided to try Edo. I've never been loyal to a salon or a hairstylist before because I usually get my haircut on a whim and will go wherever has an opening. She recommended me seeing her same stylist, Chri who is also one of the owners and I was able to get an appointment with her within the week! I love, love my new haircut. I have gotten so many compliments on my hair since she cut it. She asked all the right questions, i.e. how much time I spend doing my hair, how I style it, how often I get it cut/ wash, etc. I was nervous after my last experience but the final result was really gorgeous. She was so nice and patient with me as I did not want to lose the length that I had spend MONTHS growing out but still wanted a change. She really saw how my hair behaves, gave me sexy bangs and got the layers perfect. I ended up with one of the best haircuts I've gotten in the last 4 years. You can now consider me a Chri regular. I will definitely be going back. The place itself is small but had decent artwork. She said it was not their usual spot, I think they are going through a construction project down the street? The price, while it has been characterized as expensive, it's really just par for the course for getting your hair done in San Francisco. And the location, convenient and only a five minute walk from Muni. Highly, highly recommended. read more

I've made three attempts to like Edo since I know some people who go there and like it. My first visit was with Roxy. She was okay. I had booked for a cut and color. When I called, I had made it clear that I have long and thick hair. A friend who went to see her prior to my appointment had given her ample warning as well. She didn't finish the color and she didn't even get to the haircut in the three hours that we had. The color wasn't so bad. Just not close to what I wanted. We booked for the following week to finish what we started. When I went in, apparently they didn't put me in the books so Roxy was with somebody else when I went in. I was quite upset but fortunately someone was available to do my cut -- Becky was great. So I thought it's all good and rebooked with her a few weeks later on my birthday for color. Then for some emergency reason or something, she couldn't make our appointment on my birthday. They said Sara can fit me in. My original appointment was at 11 am. They rescheduled me for 3 pm. I told them I had dinner reservation at 6:30 pm. So by 3:30, when no one has attended to me, I decided this wasn't the place for me. I walked out because I knew that I won't be out in time for dinner.I guess it's just my luck. I know of some people who like Edo. My experience with them has been substandard. I've had nothing to rave about and I haven't enjoyed the customer service. I'm not going back. read more

oh, edo.. you shouldn't have. [sheepish smile] i know it might sound, well.. suggestive, but i have been with LITERALLY every single stylist at edo. and i must say.. // C O L O R // C O L O R // C O L O R // three years ago when we met, they turned me into a topaz / sixties / banged babe.. then i wanted a mahaghony / chestnuty / dark / edgy / blunt / razor cut that would do all the talking for me.. then i decided to go blonde / beachy / carmel undertones with dangerously long / blunt bangs that rested right on my eyelashes [not to worry, bang trims are only fifteen bucks, and they clean the layers around the face so you can get away with a couple of those before the next full cut] and it was just today that i broke up with my trademark straight across bangs, and got cozy with a more sleek side swiped/ dark chocolate set of bangs that made me remember that i had a forehead.. and eyebrows too!! huh, fancy that. i can actually see my face, and yes.. it does have a smile on it. thank you edo, for your patience and technical skill to take me every shade of radical, while keeping the integrity of my hair in pristine condition. and thank you for the laughs. you and i, well we are buddies now. i have never felt brushed off or seen any sticks sticking out of the bottom of anyone's skirts- that in itself sets this salon apart from the rest. edo salon, until death do us part.. read more

"This is the beginning of a beautiful realtionship!" I had my very first EDO experience last week and I am now a loyal client. I had a great experience from when I first walked in to first check-out their level of friendlieness (I'm done with socialy challenged hair stylists) in the morning before heading into work and from when i left after my appontment which was later on that same day. Thank-you EDO for having EXTENDED HOLIDAY hours and for treating me like royalty. My appoinment was at 8 o'clock in the evening and I only had to wait maybe 15 minutes for my stylist and right away i was offered a very good kind of red wine. I was then prept for my stylist by another person who shampooed and massaged me into the ultimate relaxed state of mind. My stylist ended up being a remarkable young lady by the name of EMA. Not only was she very talented in the hair styling department but also in creating a very fun and inviting atmospere to be in during the whole time I was at EDO. I must say I don't have the easiest hair to cut or style but EMA worked her magic like a PRO! I must also say that another hair stylist who was doing her thing next to me and EMA was very talented at her job also, this person being Rosette. I am fresh back from yet another another life changing cut and color from Jayne. This lady has magic all over her! Deft with the shears, genius with color, an encyclopedic knowledge of vintage and contemporary looks, an acute understanding of what will work for your specific features with a willingness to tell you the cold hard truth (in the most charming way). I love that you can decide you want to look like late 70's Nancy Wilson from Heart and she not only gives you the perfect cut, but suggests makeup and clothing that will complete the look! I have been a devoted client of Jayne's since the 1990's when I was fierce-ing my way through my 20's with hair to match and she took my color from dark to russet, to strawberry, back to dark again, all while delivering me a head of bouncing, behaving hair. Now that I am in my 30's, she is able to give me more age appropriate hair without sacrificing style. There is so much eye candy at Edo, from the cute stylists, to the darling clientele, to the ever-changing art shows from local artists. Once again...another great haircut from Nick! My mom worked in several salons, many of her friends cut hair, my sister wants to cut hair. I've been around "hair" people my whole life, yet I think I've had about 3 whole hair cuts that I have actually really sincerely liked, EVER! So far Nick has given me 2 of those. I think I am slowly breaking from my fear of salons. Nick has good taste and he cuts hair like he is really enjoying his job which I think in the end, provides great results. People playing with my hair is so utterly relaxing to me; after the cut, I rode my bike home and the wind blowing through my hair felt so wonderful! I'm not a picky person at all. But Nick appears to be someone who has his shit together enough to actually give me a good hair cut for once. I feel like he works like he really enjoys his job and because of that, it gives him good results. Dude. Edo is where it's at. I'm so grateful I stopped in, once upon a time. The people working there are hot, everyone is available for consultation, I kind of felt like a rockstar, like I was in on style that used to be for "other people." I hadn't had bangs since I was 7. Jayne Matthews and Kristina Welzein encouraged me to try them straight. Later, I got free trims and got to try them asymetrically, longer, and layered. BEST of all I was finally brave enough to try a dye. Jayne picked some wonderful combo of reds and covered my grey, while making my skin look good. Hair has been glossy and not needed product all summer. Serious art shit. I've been getting compliments since June. And, the color lastest through the east coast heat, lots of pools and a few Vegas trips. I won't go anywhere else. Edo knows how to dress a gal up and make the whole process fun. Kristina Welzien of Edo Salon is as good as it gets. She is attentive, asks great questions and is highly, highly skilled. She's a joy to be in the presence of and makes it her business to make sure customers leave feeling fabulous. The funky salon/gallery offers tea and wine, which definitely aids in making the experience even more relaxing. I normally see Kristina for a cut and color but recently went in for a blow-out and OHMIGOSH, the scalp massage she gave me beforehand pretty much left me speechless. I left feeling hot and totally relaxed. She is knowledgeable about the salon's gorgeous array of Bumble and Bumble products and helped me pick out the exact right combination of products to keep my hair looking great. Rosette is simply irresistible! !!! I've been cutting my own hair for years, I'm an artist and never felt the need to pay for a haircut. I was very nervous having to trust someone else and asked the receptionist who would be good with my thick mop of hair. This lady really knew what she was doing and where she was going with this haircut. First she asked me how I run my fingers through my hair and then proceeded to run her fingers through my hair asking me which style I felt comfortable with. She then appeared to be dancing around my head as she cut my hair. All I can say is my hair looks good any way I run my hands through it, just falls perfectly .I want to tell her thank you for being so attentive and precise with my hair. I can't imagine being a stylist, the mere thought of dealing with the incredible fragile and delicate nature of women and their hair makes me cringe. For this alone, I admire the courage and tenacity stylists have when they pursue this path.. not to mention having to be incredibly chatty and positive all the time. yuck. That being said, Sarah at Edo is also the reason I give this place five stars. I had someone gawk at how much I pay to get my tresses trimmed recently (a fag, what's happened to the world!), which left me feeling a bit dubious about going back to Edo, but my doubts were left far behind when I went home with my beautiful new do. Sarah knows her way around a head, and can make a very low-maintenence lady like me feel like a complete hotty. You know you have an incredible cut when all you do is shower and air-dry, and your hair is hot shit. Love it! read more

I've been going to Edo for 3 years now and I absolutely love everything about this salon. I live 1.5-2 hours away from San Francisco and I drive all the way to the city just to get a haircut there... Yup. I love it that much! I actually found Edo on Yelp and I decided to go there after reading all the wonderful reviews. I was super scared to get my hair done at first since I've never gotten a haircut in the US (I had just moved to the Bay Area from Asia then) and when I had my hair done the first time, I was simply ecstatic. I've gotten my hair cut by Roxy, Elizabeth, and Justin and they're just amazing. I go to Justin now and he always makes me feel like a princess after he does my hair. He is simply amazing! So I've been here three times and I've had a different stylist every time. Each one has been very nice, the chatty type. I got a good haircut from everyone of them. But here's the thing: all of the cuts looked great in the salon, but turned out to be completely UNmanagable. I'm not a stylist. I want a haircut that will look good with minimal self-styling. Therefore I think the haircuts were not worth the $70 (before tip!) that they charged. Also, I know someone who used to go to one particular stylist here (shall remian nameless b/c she still works there) and the stylist would constantly cancel her appointments with little prior notice. Boooo! I switched to Paul at Zip Zap around the corner (Fillmore and Haight) and have been much, much happier. read more

This was my first experience with Edo and it completely exceeded my expectations....especially due to the hairstylist I was given. His name is Brandon Balderrama and I HIGHLY recommend him. I went in there with no idea about what I wanted, but I knew I just needed a change. He made me feel so comfortable and really took the time to sit with me and ask questions and get a feel of what I would really be happy with in the long-run. He wouldn't just "do it" for the sake of doing it and he was honestly concerned with my being happy in the end. I needed a haircut and I had heard good things about Edo. I decided to give them a try. Called that same day and got in that afternoon by appt. The salon is larger then it looks from the outside, I was surprised. I was offered a beverage, I chose red wine. The place is funky with a good feel to it and good music. Prices are reasonable, $60 for my cut. I don't get color but I imagine the prices are also fair. Chri who happens to be one of the owners was my stylist. She was very pleasant and listened to what I was looking for in a haircut. The haircut was good, a little shorter than I would like but good none the less. Chri knows what she's doing and I will definitely go back when the hair gets to long. read more

I absolutely love this place! I moved to the Bay Area a couple of years ago and I've seen a few different stylists and they've all been so great every time! I came in for a fun haircut that wasn't something typical and boring and this salon was perfect. The stylists always listen to what I want and always deliver something amazing.They play good music too which is nice and totally unlike the horrible techno/dance music that salons love to play. Plus, it's also an art gallery so there's super cute art hanging everywhere. I mean come on, it is in the lower Haight. 5 stars for good service, talented hairstylists and a retro/chic atmosphere! I love this place. In particular though, I love Justin. When I go in with an urgent but vague need for a fashion makeover, he manages to talk with me enough to get to the bottom of my vague idea- after which he runs with it and always leaves me looking fresh and lovely. Which is impressive considering that I have wavy (borderline curly) hair that has thrown many a stylist for a loop. Now, I'm a pretty fashionable girl, but one complaint I have had with other stylist at other trendy salons is the feeling that I'm getting the cold, hip sneer. In contrast, Justin is warm, funny and personable even in a salon environment that is just a tad to cool for school. read more

LOVE LOVE LOVE this salon! I recently saw Marissa for ombre. She did exactly what i asked for, you know the Jessica Biel/ Alexis Chung look, yeah well she did it perfectly. She recommend Jamey for a cut and she was available right after my color...talk about service! Jamey suggested some face framing layers to complement my knew look. Couldnt be any happier with my complete do! Both of the them were very friendly and easy to talk to. These two make a great team. I've known about edo for some time now but have put off making an appointment until recently. I heard many great things about this salon but I absolutely dread cutting my hair. I always end up feeling awful after a hair cut. One of my co-workers recommended Emma and I totally trust her opinion so I made an appointment. Everything about Emma looked great from her hair to her clothes. Its was quite a coincedience since her particular cut was exactly how I wanted my hair. To make things short, I LOVE MY HAIR!. She is incredibly talented and the salon had this rustic vibe with the beautiful plants, furnishing, and lighting fixtures. I also really liked the music they were playing today lol - it was relaxing listening to the likes of Lumineers, Lana del Rey, Khruangbin, the Neighborhood, etc. The Nopa location is adorable :)

I scheduled the appointment for 10am on a Saturday, and then I got a call where they would do the haircut at 10am, and then the color at 10:30am. My stylist for the haircut was Alexander and he was so nice! He explained every step and made sure I was comfortable as we went along. This was also a dry cut, which I've never had. I was about to take my glasses off, and he asked that I keep them on since I wear them most of the time and he wanted to ensure my haircut would essentially accommodate it. I've never had a stylist ask me that before and it makes perfect sense. So now my hair frames my face well, with and without my glasses. After the haircut was the color with Zoe and it was a relaxing experience. I wanted to fall asleep (I'm the type that falls asleep to ASMR videos especially with combing and wooden makeup sounds). Then it was a shampoo and style with another stylist. I called that day my self-care Saturday, and I felt so relaxed and refreshed after being there for nearly 3 hours. Now that my hair has grown out a bit, it still looks good. I love the layers that Alexander created, which took my now naturally wavy hair into account (my hair has been getting wavier as I'm aging). I feel like my grays aren't blending as well as the color fades. Maybe it's because the new shampoo I'm using may be too good at retaining the color. At a certain angle, it's very apparent where the dye ends and where my grays start. But you'd have to be shorter than me to see it, and I'm pretty short. Overall the color still looks great and tbh I don't think anyone is noticing my gray roots at the moment. The cost of the haircut and color was over $400 with tip. But my hair is still looking fantastic a month in. And this is something I'll probably do twice a year, so it's something I can save up for.

So my hair was pretty rough. Kara was super professional and recently gave me a wonderful, cosmopolitan haircut based on 3-year old photos (of her previous cut). She's also just a very kind and attentive person, but also efficient at the same time, and a great conversationalist. Kara knows her craft. This reflects so well on Zip Zap itself - a terrific salon. I first went to Eddie, about 25 years ago, and he was superb. So hurrah for Kara, and hurrah for Zip Zap.

Providing an update to address some points from the owner's response to my initial review that left…read moreme a bit concerned. Again, I reiterate that I was a frequent patron at this salon and still have my email appointment confirmations from 3/9/19, 12/23/18, 11/3/18, and 7/27/18 (which I have attached as screenshots to this review). Perhaps the salon purges their client records after a certain amount of time, which is why the owner stated that I have never been a client? Unsure, but, again, I am surprised that the owner's initial reaction is to publicly accuse me of lying about ever being a patron of their establishment. In regards to the communication around appointment deposits, of course credit card deposits are standard. The email confirmation I received for my appointment did not contain any directions as to where to submit the credit card information and the stylist did not answer when I asked her that same question (screenshot attached). Contrary to what the owner alleges in their response that I never responded to their attempts to contact me, I do not have any records of any other communication from the salon aside from the initial email confirmation and then the sudden email cancellation. If there is any record of anyone attempting to contact me any other way prior to the appointment cancellation that the salon can provide (i.e., email, text message, phone-call, or voicemail), I will happily amend this review. Anyone who follows my reviews will notice that I tend to focus on positive reviews that uplift businesses in my community. I do not rate businesses poorly often and I am certainly not the type to drag discussions like these out publicly, nor have I ever had to "post my receipts before." Given the owner's response to my initial review, while it is highly unlikely I will ever return to this salon, I do hope my experience was isolated and that everyone involved in this unfortunate situation was able to learn something constructive.

She then asked me to be there at 11am and then revised it to say 10:55. Then she said, "don't be late!" I arrived early. She was working on a customer and when she saw me, i told her who I am and she nodded. Then she asked her client if it was okay if she paused to finish his hair so she could wash mine. He obliged. So she called me over to the wash station and proceeded to wash my hair. She did a good job, but it felt a little rushed. Then she sat me in a blow dry chair while she finished her other client. As soon as he was done, she brought me over to her station and began doing my hair. She dried it section by section with a blow dryer and then flat ironed it section by section. I thanked her for fitting me in & she smiled and mentioned that she only had 30 minutes to do my hair because it is going to be a busy weekend. When she was done, my hair looked sleek and smooth, and I was happy with what she did. The cost $60 was definitely on the pricey side even for my long & thick hair. The salon itself is clean inside and pleasant enough, but I would say that this was not a relaxing experience. I felt rushed and almost like I was an inconvenience. At the same time, my hair looks good so there's that.
