I'm in San Francisco for a work conference and decided to get a blowout shortly after arriving at my hotel. Decided to walk in to Salon Nine. The desk attendant told me I had the option of paying $99 for one of their master stylists or $85 for I can't remember what she called the person. I decided to go with the $85 option because it was lower and I've never paid so much for a wash and blow dry. My stylist Vivian was very friendly. Her blow out technique was odd in my opinion. I've had 100's of blowouts over the years and I've only had this type of experience one other time in my life. She hand pulled my hair and applied heat at the same time and then only blow dried with my hair over the barrel. Not until I suggested she place my hair under the barrel and pull, did she do it. I have 3B/3C curls. If you want a frizz free blow dry, you have to alternate hair over and under the barrel and apply heat. To be fair she didn't do a terrible job. Saved me from doing it myself. Definitely not worth $100 (including tip). The vibe was nondescript. read more

Mia is very good but service is nonexistent and I was pushed on the spot to follow their Instagram for no incentive given. Will not go back again for a $175 hair cut unless I need a good haircut and no where else could provide the hair design/cut skill Mia delivered. If possible, I'd rather contact her directly and pay her only, cause she is the only good thing that came out of my visit. I also couldn't tip Mia at checkout and I was asked to either Venmo or tip with cash...why is this a thing?? read more

Pushed me to follow their instagram after the service. Quite literally forced me to LOL) They only take tips in cash / Venmo so expect to Venmo or bring cash. haircut was decent, service terrible. Clearly knows what they're doing in terms of cutting hair. Worth the $200 price tag? Probably not in my opinion read more

I have been going to Salon Nine since it was located up the street and called Yosh - at least 20 years anyway. I have had several stylists and colorists and they never disappoint. I have short hair with a cowlick and unexpected curl and it's a pain to get it into shape. The cuts I get manage to work with them and they don't spring out. I will never change salons! read more

This review is way overdue, but I've had two cuts from Hanabi at Salon 9 a few years ago, and both times I was so happy with the results. Hanabi was always attentive to the look I wanted to go for, and she is extremely skilled at what she does. The studio is also spacious, clean, and comfortable. Listen, I used to have major trust issues with hair colorists, but Ali has changed the game for me. I've been hopping salons almost every quarter before finding Ali, but I have been dedicated to him for the past 2-3 years now. Even after moving outside SF, he makes the trip worth it. We've been through a lot - he took me on a wild ride from orange to black and back to blond. Ali first brought me back to the dark side with some color pop after I walked in as a mess with orange hair and outgrown roots. But the real magic happened when I was over it and wanted to go back to blonde, which can be a disaster, but Ali managed to do it without frying my hair. He also corrected a botched bleach job I had once when I was in NY and I left the salon feeling like a blonde bombshell (I wish I had better moments captured). I'll definitely be coming back for all of my hair transformations in the future Thank you! read more

I got my hair absolutely melted off here and they refused to refund me even though my hair was falling out and the color was nothing like the photo. I came in wanting a dark burgundy red. my hair was a dark blue, and even though I've lightened my hair at home before, I wanted to be extra safe and go to a professional. in my consult she did a test strand and said my hair was pretty healthy, that it "might be a little dry" after but it would be fine to bleach. I was clear that my hair health was my priority, that I didn't want it to be gummy or to fall out and she assured me it wouldn't. during my appointment she did someone else's color while my bleach was processing, and I think this might be why she didn't check how the bleach was doing as often as she said she would. it was insanely over processed, super gummy, stretchy, and falling out all over the place. when I left, my hair was soaking wet and tangled because it was too damaged to brush. the color was horrible, it was fire red at my roots, then a band of dark brown red, then a light coral pink at the ends. I went back the next day and they said they don't do refunds but they'd give me a treatment to help repair my hair. I didn't notice a difference. they said to come back in a few days and it wouldn't be gummy anymore. I waited three days, washed gently, and used k18. it was still gummy and snapping off! I waited for it to dry and brushed it SUPER gently. there was a handful of hair in my brush after. I had to get a lot cut off which broke my heart because I've been trying to grow it out. I went back again and told them everything, and they still refused to refund the $200. the manager kept saying "you knew it would be like that because we did a test strand" which is simply not true. I was told repeatedly that it would be fine, just a little dry. the manager was also just super condescending! she was trying to convince me that it wasn't that bad, but then at the same time that I should've known it would be like that?? she also did not once acknowledge the obvious damage or color mistake. I get that mistakes happen but you should take accountability for them. super unreasonable to refuse a refund on such an unsuccessful, destructive service. don't risk your money, time, or hair. there are lots of other salons in sf that will either give you the service you pay for, or refund it when they mess up this bad. also just for the record I've never left a negative review in my life and I never thought I would because I'm pretty chill but I just wanted anyone considering this salon to know what might happen. read more

Mari is the BEST stylist. I have thick, dense, Island, bruha hair... then bleach it ... #gameover. Mari with her fantastic technique and tools helps me not only look normal but makes me feel beautiful. When most stylist were afraid to cut my hair short because I needed the weight to keep my hair down, she was able to give me an asymmetrical bob, chin length with the neckline razored. She's helped shape my hair through the growth stage and now thinning it and shaping it into a longer length. On top of being a pro stylist... Mari truly loves what she does and makes sure you're completely happy. She has text me with hair style recommendations in between cuts, referred me to stylists in the salon when I played with the idea of extensions and has always recommended the best products for my dried out, bleach, dead hair. Situated on two floors with the loft level above, it's got just the right even lighting with modern self lit mirrors. Color station is beautiful, transforming the space into looking like an upscale department store. Mari is a master at her hair cutting skills, specializing in razor textured cuts, long and short. Her cuts take out all the bulky weight out of my thick & long Asian hair, leaving it full of natural bounce and body and very easy to style and maintain. Kaela helped me with a protein treatment and Shannon did an amazing, bouncy, cut for my unruly, thick long bob. I followed my hair goddess Mari here! Salon Nine is at a nice and quiet location near union square but it wasn't difficult to find. They did a great job about social distancing- I was the only customer there on the first floor for almost my entire haircut. The place was clean, the receptionist was super nice and Mari of course was amazing like she always is. I have A LOT of hair (unruly Asian hair) that's naturally wavy so usually my haircut takes her about 2 hours. She's super detailed and I loved every cut that was done by her, especially the asymmetrical bob from 2 years ago. Also, she's like the sweetest person ever-I'd follow her anywhere she goes! It was a great experience at Salon Nine, would definitely recommend it to a friend! read more
