This was actually our second visit to Hook @ Harvey, and it was just as amazing as the first! Don't let the unassuming exterior fool you--this cozy little restaurant may be small, but it delivers in a BIG way! We arrived a little early for our reservation, and the staff was incredibly welcoming. They seated us right away and gave us plenty of time to look over the menu without feeling rushed. The food was unbelievably fresh, beautifully prepared, and absolutely delicious! Every bite was fantastic, and the service was exceptional. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming--it made the entire experience even better. A few tips if you're planning a visit: Make reservations! This place books up quickly. Bar seating is first come, first served, but there are only six seats. There's a beautiful patio overlooking the marina where you can enjoy drinks (no food service on the patio). It's an intimate space with around 10 tables, making for a cozy dining experience. It's a 12-and-up restaurant, perfect for a relaxing date night or an adults-only evening out. Can I give this place ten stars???? What an amazing meal, ambience and experience all together! First thing to know is that you need to make reservations. The restaurant is small and reservations only. We went for a birthday and Hook at Harvey did not disappoint! The vibe is exactly what you would expect from a cute spot on the water. It was light and airy inside. Casual and elegant at the same time. We started with drinks outside while we caught the sunset and waited for our table. A great start to an amazing night! I believe they have a seasonal menu. We started with the ahi tuna and crab stuffed artichoke. I'm a huge ahi tuna fan and this was one of the best I've had. Also, the crab stuffed artichoke - I could eat that everyday! So good! On to our mains! My friend got the chicken and I got the scallops with potatoes. Again... nothing short of amazing! The scallops were perfectly cooked and paired nicely with the crispy on the outside potatoes. I had the peanut butter and chocolate dessert which again, I cannot rave about enough! Hook at Harvey's is a beautiful bistro at the marina with wonderful staff. Everyone was very kind and welcoming. We sat at the bar and Kelsie is a ray of sunshine - got the fettuccine, pan fried fish of the day, and the spicy ahi tuna sashimi. The dishes themselves were very clearly made by people who love food, fresh ingredients, and careful preparation - every part of every dish was cooked perfectly and complemented everything we ate. If you love seafood and appreciate thoughtful dishes, this would be a wonderful place to try. Wish we could have thanked the chefs personally. read more

First off the ambiance was great and the service was excellent. The food however was terrible which was very disappointing considering the prices of the entrees. Party of 4 and all were disappointed with it. Even the rolls weren't good - cold and dry. The steak I ordered as medium came out a touch over rare. I requested that it be cooked a little more so I could eat it. That request must have angered the chef because they sent it back same temperature and put massive amount of swirls of butter all over the top. Clearly the chef wasn't happy with it being sent back. I don't even have a rating for this place. However, in order to post, I had to rate this place. Being local...we have frequented this place for quite some time. We have enjoyed the ombiance - it's a great place to have a drink - for atmosphere. Maybe I have the wrong expectation - that "tonic" should be fizzy, that a steak that costs $48 should be served hot along with the rest of the plate...maybe I have the expectation that a business respects its patrons - that it values someone who works hard for their money and happily spends it in local businesses- with the expectation of a drink made right and food served hot. Maybe I have the expectation that a restaurant staff doesn't throw it my face that I returned a few drinks that weren't made the way I like them - and food served not hot enough to my liking - to have it thrown in my face. I give this place a zero. Five zeros and shame on the staff and the owner. I'm sure this place could care less...but that's to be expected. The integrity, theivery, and disrespect this place has for its patrons that speak out is despicable. Pack sand owner of hook @ Harvey. This is a small place that pumps out amazing food. Best meal we've had in Cape Charles and forever on my list. In fact, next visit I will plan to eat here more than once if I can get a reservation. Speaking of reservations, I couldn't make one so I put myself on the wait list with my phone number and a note that we were really hoping to eat there. I walked to Cravings to buy a salad and small pasta salad for my husband and me and as soon as I paid, I got the call that someone canceled and they had availability at 7. Yes! We will be there. Since we stayed at The Northampton, we had a fridge to stash the food from Cravings for beach time the next day. When we arrived we were greeted by a very confused young lady who kept trying to seat us at a six-top table when there was an empty table for two right next to it. I explained the situation but she sat us at the six top anyway. A few minutes later she came back and moved us to the two top. With menus in hand, we looked at options and made decisions. We probably sat for 10 minutes before the server came over. It's clear they are relaxed and want that vibe for their customers too. We placed our orders of crab bisque, Asian seared tuna, lamb chops and seafood pasta, and we each got a martini. We were off! Water was brought, bread delivered and drinks arrived shortly after. The food here is amazing! Everything was cooked to perfection, the service was just right and not rushed. This was worth every penny and we are grateful we got in. read more

Ok so this small place is amazing. First thing we sat at the bar and you should probably get a reservation. The service is awesome and a great reason to go back. We loved this place our server was also the bar keeper. Kelsey. She was amazing. The appetizers were a lot bigger than I thought they would be but they were incredibly fresh and tasty. Seasoned well and beautiful to look at. The soup was the right kind of creamy and crab mix. The puff pastry was buttery and flaky and held up to a lot of crab. The main dishes were large as well. You get a lot on your plate. My beef tenderloin was a perfect medium rare. The potatoes and vegetables were perfectly presented and tasted fresh and seasoned perfectly. The seafood pasta was fresh and huge. So much in that bowl you can taste every element and the pasta was freshly made. We took some home and was stuffed. Absolutely worth the drive and cost. Hook @ Harvey has been on my radar for a while now. I was supposed to come here a few years ago but had to cancel my reservation at the last minute bc plans changed. Last weekend, my husband and I came in to celebrate our April birthdays while staying in Cape Charles for the weekend. Our server was wonderful, Kelsey I believe. Super friendly and attentive, but not overly so. We chose the crab pastry appetizer and it was very good and loaded with fresh crab meat. My husband went with the veal entree and I had the seafood fettuccine. Both were wonderful and high quality with huge portions (we could've split one between us). The fettuccine is made in-house, it was loaded with crab, shrimp and scallops (they were out of oysters) and is in a light white wine sauce which was wonderful bc it wasn't overly sauced. The veal is egg-washed and lightly flash fried stuffed with cheese and prosciutto and served on noodles with asparagus. Also wonderful. A few things I was disappointed by: their tea isn't fresh or brewed in-house but is the bottled Lipton kind and as such, not very good. Also, they ran out of the dessert for the night, cheesecake, and it was our birthday so we didn't get any dessert which was disappointing bc that was what I specifically planned to get from seeing the menu/photos in advance. read more

Visiting Cape Charles for the first time and celebrated our wedding anniversary with dinner at Hook @ Harvey. What a fabulous evening! Our server, Anna, was stellar. And to say that the food was delicious feels like an understatement. Appetizer: Crab Chesapeake. Entrees: Seafood Fettuccine and Jumbo Seared Scallops. Dessert: Creme Brulee. We had a reservation for our anniversary dinner during our visit to Cape Charles. We'd heard good things about the restaurant and, specifically, that they will accommodate dietary restrictions. I have a very common dietary restriction that has never been an issue in other restaurants, even those who don't claim to have the high standards of Hook @ Harvey. We noted this in our reservation that was made 2 months ago. We also contacted the restaurant a week prior to our reservation and the chef himself responded and assured us that I would have an entree available. When we arrived, the server even confirmed my dietary restriction before we even said anything and we thought that was a good sign. However, she then indicates that the only options that would be available to me would be a basic salad on the appetizer menu, which is NOT a meal. When asked if they would have an entree available for me, she went to ask the chef and was told that none of the entrees could be altered. So I would essentially not have an entree to eat, despite us doing our due diligence to allow the restaurant ample time to prepare something. So we left and will not be returning. I have NEVER had to leave a restaurant because they were not willing to accommodate. How can a chef who claims that their restaurant is "fine dining" and everything is made from scratch be unable to accommodate a simple dietary restriction? I've been to many restaurants where the chef was highly competent, flexible and easily prepared a beautiful meal that suited my needs. This is obviously a case where a chef/owner knows there are limited fine dining options in Cape Charles and simply doesn't care enough to accommodate his customers. read more

I'm sorry but this place was a disappointment. Over priced, but my husband and I decided to make a reservation last minute for an anniversary trip. They got us in but when we order our duck and lamb it was over raw. I said something to server and she offer to take back to stick it on the grill longer. I have a servsafe certificate and told them that is against regulations she seemed upset. Then told us we do it all the time. We were so disappointed! We have never had a bad experience at this restaurant, but after our meal last night, we will probably not be back. 3 out of 4 meals at our table we're subpar. Three of us ordered tenderloins and all were undercooked and nothing on our plates was hot. No one came to check on us and by the time we were able to flag down the wait staff we had eaten most of the very disappointing meal. The wait staff offered to cook the remainder of our steaks to the correct level, but it was too little, too late. Hook at Harvey is the best restaurant in Cape Charles! Located right on the water, this upscale restaurant is inside a refurbished house that looks right onto the waters of a local yacht club. Make your reservations far in advance and you won't regret it. When I think about this restaurant, I immediately remember the beautiful atmosphere outside. We were in town for a family wedding and this was by far our favorite restaurant we visited in Cape Charles. Excellent service, a great menu, and stellar cocktails. For dinner, I had the lobster bisque and the stuffed flounder. Both were absolutely delicious! The stuffed flounder had a generous amount of crabmeat and was perfectly seasoned and tender. We also had the scallops, which were perfection. I would absolutely recommend this lovely restaurant to anyone! read more

The experience was definitely worth five stars. Our server, Rachel, was very nice and friendly and informative about the menu as well as the history of the restaurant.  We had eaten at its precursor, Hook U Up, downtown a few years ago and were impressed then also.  So, their quality hasn't declined with the move to a larger (and more scenic) space.   For starters, we had the Wild Mushroom and Goat Cheese dumplings.  Absolutely delicious! We also ordered the Mixed Greens with blood orange, figs and chevra goat cheese.  Also very tasty.  For our main course, we had the Kelp Infused Fettuccine with seared scallops, shrimp, lump crabmeat and braised octopus and the Honey Mustard Rubbed Rack of Lamb with a fig gastrique and whipped sweet potatoes. To be honest, the kelp did infuse the pasta with a green color, however did not seem to infuse any additional flavor. Or, it was too subtle for my palate.  However it was cooked excellently, a good portion and the proteins and sauce were excellent.  Other than expecting to experience a different flavor profile, there is nothing negative about the dish and lots of positives.  The rack of lamb was a fairly large portion and cooked very nicely at medium, as I asked, with a good outside sear and blush of pink in the loin.  The fig gastrique paired great with the lamb and the whipped sweet potatoes were delicious  I enjoyed it thoroughly and would order it again. They do require reservations. However, they do seat people at the small bar on a first come first serve basis. They also have an outdoor patio where you can sip some drinks and overlook a scenic working Harbor. However they do not serve out there. All-in-all, an excellent dining experience that I will look forward to the next time I am in Cape Charles read more

My husband and I decided to visit Hook @ Harvey while staying in Cape Charles for a late Valentine's Day dinner. We have been a couple of times before and it never disappoints, so we knew we wanted to come back for a special occasion. Our server, Sara, was amazing! Very friendly and attentive. We ordered a bottle of the 1448 red blend which was very good. The rolls were warm when served and paired well with the soup we each ordered - I had the french onion and my husband had the lobster bisque. For our entrees, my husband ordered the scallops and licked his plate clean... quite literally with another roll that Sara brought over! I had the fish of the day. For dessert, I had the espresso ice cream and my husband had the praline cheesecake. Everything was so delicious! I highly recommend Hook @ Harvey for that special date night or occasion! read more

My husband and I live in Richmond, VA and we have been to this restaurant 3 times in less than a month! The service, experience, and most importantly, the food, is AMAZING. If you are planning travel to Cape Charles, you must grab a reservation here, or try your luck at bar seating. I've collected the various photos from our dinners here, and you can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but the bisque and scallops were by far our favorite. Update Beware the new menu in December 2023. Maybe chef was off this night, but meal was a step below our last couple experiences. Mixed grill with rabbit cassoulet is an ambitious dish and, in this case, the kitchen didn't understand the assignment. Duck fat was not fully rendered and the huckleberry gastrique lacked punch. Everything lacked salt. The venison chop was cooked nicely but once again was almost unseasoned. The biggest letdown was the beans. They were swimming in oil with shreds of rabbit floating around. Just zero creaminess and zero flavor. Our server Rachel discounted my entree. Around the table people were furiously reaching for the salt and pepper. Everything was under seasoned. The filet was fine. Chicken was ok. The lamb was excellent and the pumpkin pasta with scallops was a hit. As always service was personal and attentive. Rachel is terrific. Desserts were very good, particularly the peanut butter pie. The "frozen almond soufflé" is the same almond tortoni my mom made in the 1970s and I enjoyed it. So we will be back, but we learned that even the greats can have an off night. read more

Ask for the outdoor seating. What I mean is go ahead and reserve that ahead of time because you'll need to do that. Drinks are as you choose. I ordered a rum punch and a mai tai which were fine. The bartender was very hospitable and a good sport. I would like to see a signature drink menu. Something interesting like punches, st Germaine gin concoctions, and blackberry cantor ginger mint type drinks to go with the fabulous outdoor marina view which is a must when reserving. The cocktail menu is a weak point at this time. Appetizers were delicious. My husband ordered the crab bisque with delectable chunks of fresh lump crab in perfectly seasoned cream. I ordered the Chesapeake Crab en Bouche not to be missed. Chunks of fresh crab, sherry, in a puff pastry shell. For entree, the seared scallops were delightful in a cream and shitake-morel sauce. Needed some salt, yes, a bit more salt than mentioned but still perfectly cooked and buttery. My husband ordered the tenderloin with whipped potatoes and a cognac Demi glaze medium rare. Delicious. Carrots a bit undercooked. Meat was perfection. Dessert was chocolate creme du pot over a chocolate ganache. Not the strong course of the meal unfortunately. Quality of chocolate needed to be better for this scale of restaurant. Ganache was more an undercooked dough and fell short of the rest of the meal. Our waitress Airianna was perfect. Polished, friendly, enjoyable. Very nice service. Great atmosphere. Nice food. Not inexpensive. Bring on an interesting signature cocktail drink menu to go with the fabulous outdoor ambiance.
