This is a great date night option. Its nestled at the far north end of downtown and the beach, a charming neighborhoody location. The interior is elevated, cozy and comfortable. The hostess was so friendly and welcoming (even from the start when I called to inquire, Victoria felt like a life time family friend). The mussels are amazing complete with bread to soak up the broth. The prices are great too. I Highly recommend this venue. Hands down one of the beat dinners I've had in ages. read more

I used to like Hook. It wasn't amazing, but solid with a decent wine list, even if most of the food was a bit over-salted. It has gone way downhill. I was alarmed yesterday when the floor around our table was sticky, and then when the glasses were dirty, and then when the bathroom reeked of urine. It wasn't even very busy! The fish and chips were strangely over-battered, with a hard shell that was difficult to cut through, and then made my partner sick. He threw up (violently) for a few hours afterward, and was wiped out the rest of the day. He hadn't eaten anything but toast prior, so it was definitely the food. We won't be back. read more

We ate on the porch because we wanted to see the sunset over English Bay Beach. We started our celebration with the fishbowl margarita. The drink was fun and they used paper straws which was awesome but they were a little too short for the fishbowl. Our food came out in a timely manner and was fresh and well seasoned. Our server was very attentive. Sunset did not disappoint. Just as we were finishing our dinner the sunset hit it's peak and we hurried across the road to take in the full view. read more

Had a friend in from Toronto and he was craving oysters so we decided to try the happy hour oysters at Hook as it's in the neighbourhood. Should have known better. We ordered a dozen between the two of us (we wanted 2 dozen but she said there was a limit of 6 per person) and were really glad we did! By the time we added horse radish, lemon, ginger sauce and their own hot sauce we got rid of the very fishy taste. She told us later that happy hour oysters are different oysters than on their regular menu. I've never seen a restaurant do that before. I should know better to go to a restaurant in a tourist area during tourist season. The mojito was great though and the service was lovely, hence higher than a 1/2 star review. If I ever go back I would be hard pressed to try any of their seafood. read more

Got here on a sunny Friday around 7pm and they were super busy. There was a wait or the option to sit in the lounge and I went for the lounge. After being seated no one came to help us for a good 10 minutes. Our section was only half filled and there were either 2 or 3 people taking care of our section. Fried oysters were amazing and came in no time. Our main however, kid you not, took close to an hour. I got hangry and they offered us a round of drinks on the house and said it was because of a large party seated in our section. When the food finally did come I was disappointed. The mussels and clams were really bland. The only thing that tasted good in it was the bone marrow. The seared salmon - beautiful presentation, salmon is soft in the inside and crunch on the outside but again very bland. The drinks were okay. I didn't like any of them including the sangria, and I'm usually not picky when it comes to cocktails. read more

Needs improvement for both FOH and food. Long post because it was a loooong dinner. My husband and I reserved a table for our Friday night dinner since the location and the weather was so nice. We got seated after a few minutes. We were seated near the raw bar/appetizer station and near the entrance of the hot kitchen. It took a while before a server finally came by to get our drink order -- my husband ordered a glass of beer and the server said she'll be back to fill our glasses with water while we decide our food orders. Again, it took a while before she finally came back to get our order -- beer and water still not served. We ordered their lobster guac to start. It took a long time again for this to be served. What my husband noticed was that the plate served to us was sitting at the pass for a while before someone finally served it to us -- mind you, we were seated closest to the pass so we saw plates just sitting there -- including our plate of guac. The lobster guac was nothing to write home about TBH, lobster pieces were tiny that you won't even notice it much -- in terms of taste and texture. For our mains i ordered their wagyu oshi and west coast chowder while the husband ordered their steak. We had to wait at least 30 mins before our mains were finally served. His steak was starting to get cold already. While my soup was under seasoned and the wagyu oishi was really nothing special and it kept on falling apart. What we noticed was that the servers kept on going back and forth the kitchen with plates of food -- seems like their ordering system needs to be more efficient and stable. They kept on checking what tables will get the food and kept on bringing wrong plates to wrong tables -- we noticed this because while waiting for our food, we see then bring out plates and after a few minutes go back to the kitchen then bringing the same plates out again. Ambience and decor was really nice and stylish and the view of English Bay is gorgeous but that's all I can rave about this place. read more

This is my favourite spot on English Bay in @YVR. @HookSeabar is located in a perfect spot with its oceanside view across. I really enjoy their tasty meals and great selection of menu items and drinks. I had several patio drinks here with a few groups of friends during our COVID summer. I will definitely be coming back for the salads. A good selection of small bites. During COVID, dine in or take out via Uber Eats. Support your local restaurants during these times. read more

My partner and I tried this spot for the first time last weekend. Everything was excellent. Our server (Can't remember her name, Sorry!) was genuinely friendly and very informative, and took time to answer all our questions even though they were clearly in a dinner rush. Happy Hour :) :) :) Everyday from 3:00-6:00 and 10:00 pm to close. - Thoroughly enjoyed the Buck-A-Shuck dozen oysters each. 3 sauces were yummy but could have a couple of more choices. - The huge and meaty large (not your baby chicken wings) drumstick attached to the wing were gobbled up - And to wash it down the Classic Burger with the smoked bacon and applewood cheddar (twist my arm) - Oh yeah and $4 beer too This is going to be a hangout on hot summer days. Come early to get a spot on the patio with the view of English Bay! Makes me miss living in the West End/Coal Harbour/Yaletown. Service was very friendly and efficient as well. read more

What a disappointment! There's that old maxim which states that the closer a restaurant is to the water, the crappier the food. This really applies at Hook Seabar, and was the case most of our party of six. The service was great, the table was also great, and it's a beautiful space but the food is only mediocre so we won't be rushing back. Also, the prices are too high for quality of food. I had the fish tacos. I'm a fish taco nut and have had them all over the city. These looked great but they were only so-so in flavour and texture. Kinda "meh". The best ones I've had were at the Village Tap House in West Van. Craft also does good ones in Olympic Village. One of my friends at the table had oysters at Hook. The first five were fine but the sixth one was rotten. She couldn't spit it out fast enough as the taste was super funky. She was afraid she might end up with food poisoning but she was okay the next day, thankfully. Needless to say, Hook was definitely a one-off for her. Our group meets regularly and we'll be going somewhere else next time. Goodbye Hook. Thanks for the nice room and service but no thanks for the so-so food... Disappointing. read more

The most disappointing thing about hook..no kids menu. Why not cater to families when you are right across from English Bay beach. Tourist zone. Happy hour menu.. Taco's with ground beef. $2 Buck a Shuck ...not in fine print that you have to order 6  Have to ask for a straw..love they are paper however. The food is really good, but I'm not a fan of their cocktails. I always find that they're too strong. Maybe it's just personal preference but I like cocktails to be mostly refreshing not strong alcohol taste. The service is really nice but kind of slow. read more

How is that possible? -This oyster meat was a little crunchy... maybe it wasn't cleaned properly -This sauce isn't great So not a sparkling review. My girlfriends and I were on a journey through town with some bikes and happened upon this place. What a lovely restaurant! The staff could not be nicer. The food was superb. We ordered pretty much everything on the menu (there were a lot of us;). Drinks were delicious. Pretty decent local beer on draft. Beet salad was the best! Please go here. Pretty average, at best. We wanted to sit outside because of the great weather and view so we waited about 15 minutes to be seated. I was a little disappointed they were still serving only brunch in the early afternoon but we ordered a few things based on our server's recommendation: - Avocado toast: she said that was one of their most popular brunch items. It was decent but really small portion. Literally one slice of toast with avocado spread and a little crab/shrimp mixture where you can't taste much crab. - Soft shell crab BLT: I was pretty excited for this since I'm a big soft shell crab fab. It was, again, another small portion. Basically a hot dog roll with half a soft shell crab on it with a pretty mayo-heavy sauce. It also could have used a bit more seasoning. Service was good though and I can tell that parking is a hassle in that area so good luck with that. read more

In the West End, there are very few hidden gems. As a local, when you find one, you're torn a bit between shouting their praises from the rooftops because you know rent is obscene and you want them to stay open, and keeping it quiet for fear it will be 45 minutes wait the next time you want a table. But in this case, it's worth the wait, every single time. Hook opened not quite a year ago, in the space that used to be Milestones. The million dollar view and huge patio should be enough to bring people through the door, but for reasons I don't understand, Cactus Club across the street has folks lined up for ages, when this gem regularly has space open. It boasts amazing food, beautiful decor, and a heated patio that can't be beat. Did I mention happy hour 2x a day? The servers are great, and the owner (who also operates craft beer & tapas heaven Blind Sparrow) make you feel welcome, always. Must try: whole chicken wings, fish and chips, eggs Benedict, and what I swear is the best burger in the city. The only negative being that it is messy as hell, and once you pick it up, it's impossible to put it down again. Also, I wish they would dial up the local beer selection, rather than carrying some of the more generic types, but that's more personal preference. Aside from those tiny comments, it's absolutely worth braving a trip to bustling English Bay for. Vancouver small businesses struggle so much as it is, and with a ton of chain restaurants and Donnelly Pubs taking over the city, it just makes sense to support the little guy when you can, especially when they are doing all the right things. Here's hoping Hook is around for many years to come. 4.5 stars. read more

SO DELICIOUS! Everything about this restaurant knocks it out of the park: beautiful & trendy design and ambience, welcoming and friendly staff (everyone has a smile on their face and makes you feel genuinely appreciated for coming), top quality food (we were a group of four friend and we could barely get a topic started without one of us stopping to remark the quality and presentation of the food)! We eat out in Vancouver approx. 2 times a week, and this is hands down one of the best restaurants in the city. We shared the following plates: Beef Carpaccio - one of the best appetizers any of us has ever had, beautifully plated, melts in your mouth (will be saying this for all dishes because they are all legitimately this high quality) Surf & Turf platter - wagyu beef sushi rolls were so creative and even more delicious, crab and prawns were expertly prepared and complemented nicely by Hook's homemade sauces, seared tuna was a favourite, even amongst people who don't typically eat tuna. SO GOOD. Seared Scallops (with braised veal cheeks) - everything about this dish is stunning. it arrives at your table so beautifully plated, and then you take a bite of the veal and it literally melts in your mouth like butter. The unexpected winner for both of our main courses were the mushrooms - amazing. Beef Tenderloin - bone marrow butter, need I say more? Another perfectly plated dish that melts in your mouth. We loved the fresh cherry tomatoes, which created a nice fresh and acidic balance to the dish. And again with the mushrooms, we were fighting over them with our forks. Plate of all the desserts - you simply can't go wrong here, but clearly their pastry chef understands what you need at the end of a meal and the quality of food doesn't skip a beat. Our favourites were the chocolate hazelnut cake and the cheesecake. I forget the name of one dessert - it was like a lemon meringue/mousse, and it was so light and refreshing. Went here the other night . We just caught the happy hour specials 3-6 . I got the guac and chips . Done with a-lot of flare lacked a little seasoning. Chips were great. Next the burger very well done . Nice big patty not burnt or charred cooked nicely . Lots nice condiments fresh lettuce very well done considering this is primarily a seafood restaurant. Mock tail dakotana fanning delicious not too sweet. My brother ordered the steak that looked incredible im coming back for that. Desert raspberry double layer mousse cake. Lil sweet lil tart . Had dinner at Hook last evening. Typical of a fussy restaurant - ordered the scallops at $32 - got 3 scallops for dinner. servings were very small and $$$$ expensive. Dinner for 7 with three bottles of cheaper wine - $475. I think they need to simplify their menu, offer some more basic items. and put more food on the plate. We're locals - within walking distance - we won't be back - to many options in the West End and Yaletown offering better value at better prices. Seriously just the coolest little restaurant!! From the moment you step in you just have that "wow!" factor. The paintings on the wall are unreal and just add to the wonderful atmosphere. This place is fine. Just like I would say earls is fine. Their food is more unique than the chain restos however also more inconsistent. So the good: Happy hour buck a shuck fanny bays with a great assortment of unique sauces and generous with the grated horseradish. The house red and white was fine and drinkable for $6 Had one of their kegged cocktails and i didn't care for it but that's personal taste. It was clearly better than a cocktail from the chain restos. The medium: Their food is inconsistent. Mussels and clams Were fine. But it's a very small dish for the price. Perhaps it is the small bone marrow that is served as a compliment that decreases the amount of shellfish. The guacamole was so salty we had to send it back. I found the consistency too creamy but fiancé was okay with the texture. But everybody had to stop due to salt. Chicken wings were an enjoyable battered style. It too salty for me but fiancé who likes salty food was okay with it but recognized it was salty Tablemate had fish tacos and I didn't get feedback on them. The awkward: After sending the guac back the manager came to apologize and tell us it was off the bill. She then asked if we wanted another round of drinks and then if she could offer us a shared dessert. I took that to mean that we were getting offered a round of drinks or dessert. My fiancé said he'd had another house red. And I said I would too and thanked her for her offer. She visibly froze and instead of asking the last person at the table she immediately left without looking at them. I realized based on her reaction that she was not offering a round and my table mates told me I had misread the situation. The 3rd person at the table was left without an option to order (comped or otherwise). It ended up being awkward for what, as mentioned, was an inexpensive drink. Very good food, nice space, friendly service. We went there for dinner and tried 5 different dishes. Everything was very good. The seafood was fresh, the dishes were tasty. The space inside is beautiful and spacious. The service was very friendly and accommodating even though the place was packed (we asked to be seated at a different table part way through our meal because we wanted a view on English Bay). Side note: Happy that the Milestone was replaced by an independent restaurant. I will definitely go back to support them! read more

I came here a few months ago for a birthday party. I am not into seafood and I can't eat shellfish, however, even though the menu was obviously primarily (with understanding) seafood there was a few options for me. I got a bunch of appies and sides to make a meal out of it. Our waiter was awesome in trying to make my meal work. He understood that it was one of the majority rules situation, therefore, I was there more for the company than the meal. I love the ambiance as it reminds me of some of the popular eateries in Gastown with a bit of a hipster elegant (an Oxymoran) feel. I ended up having the chicken wings which were nicely spiced and marinated. Crispy artichoke was a nice touch, however, just needed a little more flavor but this was nice and crispy. I had the halibut dish (the only fish aside from Salmon that I actually like and can eat), all the flavors worked well with each other. It was like a dream. Met with 3 friends on a Sunday for a working lunch. As a place to be enthusiastically served delicious food that has been thoughtfully created, lovingly cooked and artistically presented, I am hooked! As a place to have a planning session, there are too many fantastic distractions! From the view to the glass pendant light fixtures to the giant whale mural to a killer soundtrack, and oh that food .... Lobster Guacamole - rich, smooth & creamy with a fabulous smoked tomato sauce. The lobster was almost lost since it is mixed right into the guac, but the flavours and textures melded divinely - we did not complain! When one of our crew (a local chef and restauranteur) mentioned that the tortilla chips were not up to snuff, our server was totally up front about the kitchen running out of their usual tortillas, hence the harder 'snap' to the thicker chip rather than the normal crisp crunch . My amateur palate happily chomped away, and I look forward to even better ones nest time. Crispy Artichokes, hearts prepped from fresh (!), light coat of cornstarch batter (gluten free), luscious lemony flavour, and then that tarragon remoulade! I will admit without shame to licking that little dish clean. The Burrata and Beet Salad is a delight to behold, with gold and red beets, white burrata peeking out from under bright green pea shoots, dark cherry halves and the sunset skins of nectarines, all sprinkled with toasted hazelnuts. It tasted as good as it looked - all components perfectly fresh and as tasty as can be. I did not partake of the giant Chicken Wings (fish and veg gal), but the vocalizations while they were noshed on, paired with the tidy little piles of cleaned bones spoke volumes. Despite the bone marrow and the broth I tried one plump little bivalve from the Mussels and Clams. It was deliciously flavoured and delicate. While the others swooned, I ate an artichoke and had another glass of wine. Back this Saturday for a friend's birthday and looking forward to another delightful meal. read more

What a stunning view - finally a stylish independent restaurant making the most of English Bay in former Milestones location. Will definitely be going back and alssolves our usual problem when guests come to town of booking a meal where the food & view will show off Vancouver. Not fine dining but very good. The heated patio will be fantastic in summer. The server was terrific and on our request moved us to a glorious window seat when one came available. Portions are huge - my husband had the fried chicken which would feed 2 and I was glad I picked a starter for my main, mussels & clams. read more

I organized a pre-Christmas get-together here with 10 friends. I was very anxious that everyone be pleased - and they absolutely were! First, it's a lovely venue with big windows overlooking English Bay and all the festive lights. Chelsea, our server, couldn't have been more eager to please. Most of us ordered from the set menu .... and I can personally recommend the delicious beet salad and blackened salmon with a plethora of beautiful little veggies in a yummy sauce. Chelsea accommodated my special request for a dessert not on the set menu -- crepes suzette, an oldie but goodie! Bottles of wine were 30% off. Only criticism was the mussels came in a broth that was extremely spicy and those that ordered it felt the menu should have specified how hot it was.
