Finally got up to Sandpoint on a date day. We have been meaning to stop in at the Hoot Owl Cafe for a while but timing never seemed to work. We had a blooper on my end figuring out their hours which delayed us from earlier in the week, but it was worth the wait! Today was the day! We got in around 8am and while they had folks coming and going, it was down a notch with the tourists gone. Winning! When we saw a bunch of hard-working older folks and families at the tables, it confirmed this was both a local hangout and it was a good value. I had a ham and cheese omelet and my wife had the veggie omelet. When they came out we thought the table would buckle. Portion sizes are GIGANTIC. Like eyebrow raising, Mr Scott "I need MORE POWER" level! I'm a big guy. 6'4", and I can do some damage to a breakfast. It's in my DNA. But that omelet is probably as much cubed ham as egg, with a healthy dose of cheese. All the components were quality. Had a side of sausage patty to go with the toast. Massive set of hash browns to go with it. And the two ladies that served us were sweethearts. In the end, I barely finished half the omelet, scarfed the patties and toast and had a bit of the hash browns. My wife loved her veggie omelet and likewise only got about halfway. She got a side of bacon extra crispy, and it was PERFECT. Price was a good value, especially given the serving sizes in today's inflation-riddled world. I can't recommend this place enough - it's a gem. While we can't make it up that way as much as we would like, Hoot Owl is EASILY our fav breakfast place. Can't wait to take visiting family up there soon. Gonna have to skip a few meals beforehand to finish that omelet. Will have to channel my inner Joey Chestnut! Eye of the Tiger!!! Excellent little mountain diner. Tasty food, huge portions, and reasonable prices. The service is friendly and the coffee is bottomless (as it should be). The menu is expansive and ranges from diner classics like patty melts and French dip sandwiches to breakfast burritos. Wish they had real maple syrup, but I can understand why not and that's not a dealbreaker. read more

This place is a GEM ! I was looking for a place to have my morning breakfast as I came into Sandpoint just to go ski. When I arrived Sherry was very friendly and the store was very country warm like. You can see all the locals coming for breakfast. I had the Green Ham Eggs and that was featured on Rachel Ray. It was amazing combination of flavors as it had spinach, thick slice of ham, eggs and cheese. I may be missing other items but the flavors just mesh perfectly! My second time there I had the God Bless America Omelette. It has a thick slice of pot roast and other goodness which is just great with hash browns. My third day I had breakfast burrito and it had veggies hash browns, bacon and many other things. One thing is certain, if you leave the restaurant hungry. It is your fault because they serve good portions. I highly recommend this place if you are in town and want some country cooking with the country environment. It's normally a pretty busy place in the mornings but they do everything they can to get you in as soon as possible! They put a lot of quality into their food and the serving sizes are huge! FAST SERVICE. These folks know how to handle a rush, I tell you... This is one of the most consistent place in town, same dish tastes exactly the same over and over. Not only do the servers come by super quickly, but food comes out quickly, and coffee is constantly refreshed. Their regular menu is huge and has so many options, but their specials are great, too. So I've reviewed this place before but now it's under new ownership. I'm happy to say it's as good as if not even better! This place ticks off all the check boxes, in my opinion, what a small hometown cafe is about. It's warm and inviting. Close tables promote neighborly conversations and there are definitely regulars that frequent. When I was there. Santa and his wife even stopped by for a visit! The waitresses are "no muss no fuss tell ya like it is" folk. Tip 'em well guys, they deserve it. This time I decided to try a good 'ole home cooked traditional...meatloaf. It was one of the specials of the day, just $11 and came with dessert too! I have to say I was impressed. Of course, I did heed the advice of one of the regulars to not have the gravy on the plate as he felt it was overly salty and said that it was bagged (one of the few things not homemade there). I did, although, order it on the side so I could try it anyhow. It was a bit salty so it actually ended up being perfect to dip my forkfulls in and control it. Yes, I could do that as the meatloaf held together nicely without being dry. It had a good seasoned taste as well, no salt or pepper required. The mashed potatoes had hints of garlic and were neither lumpy or rubbery baby food mush. The green beans reminded me of my grandmas as well as the sheet cake. They use Farmer Brothers coffee and my cup was always full and piping hot. Best drip coffe around so far! On an excited note...they are also now starting to serve Dinner and are open until 8PM! It's definitely a dive which I am often attracted to for a breakfast spot. The French toast was so buttery and delicious, though the eggs and sausage links were just pretty good. Wish the coffee was a little stronger but I understand they have to appeal to a wider palette when it's flowing all day long. Comfort home cooking at the Hoot Owl Cafe! It has been a number of years since I have been to the Hoot Owl Cafe so being in town, I wanted to see if it lived up to my expectations. My expectations were exceeded as this down-home, quirky, friendly, cafe served up a meal that was like a warm and filling hug from the kindest and sassiest of grandmothers. The menu is filled with comfort food that comes with a side of wit. Check out the names and descriptions and unique offerings that will satisfy an array of tastes. My main experiences have been with the breakfast, but lunch is a winner as well. The eclectic and non-pretentious decor is a perfect reflection of what will be served up during your experience. This visit I had the Redneck Benedict with fluffy and buttery biscuits, perfectly cooked eggs, savory breakfast sausage, and a topping of scratch gravy and cheese. It's not going to get better than this. The supreme hash browns are not to miss either. Lets not forget the pancakes. I am always searching for pancakes that hold up to my favorite thus far at Callie's Cafe. I really have not found anything to compare; until today. Hoot Owl stands eye to eye, beak to beak, with Callie's. The pancakes were fluffy and moist as they were served up with a dollop of butter melting in the middle of the cake. I was full from the Redneck Benedict and had ordered the pancake just to test it out, and I love it so much that I ate the entire pancake (and the large cake is good-sized). I don't get to Sandpoint, ID as much as I would like, but when I do in the coming months or years, I will plan to stop by to visit my friends at the Hoot Owl Cafe (the name alone...) for a serving of home-cooked love. read more

Just found this treasure, it is a must try for incredible breakfasts. Possibly the best overall breakfast we have ever had when you combine the quality of the food with price and portions, you do not leave here hungry. The vegetarian omelette was by far the best ever! Very quaint location, a real coffee shop where locals gather for breakfast, coffee, and conversation. We will schedule the Hoot Owl as a stop on every trip up North. Cute little greasy spoon restaurant! They serve your favorite all American breakfast menu items, as well as homemade baked goods. Although unassuming on the outside, the food and staff are amazing on the inside! Food went down to quickly, I forgot to snag a picture. This cafe is a bit on the dated side with one room kind of leaning a bit. It just adds character to what was a very good breakfast. I enjoyed the Redneck Benedict which consists of biscuits/ eggs / sausage / cheese / gravy. It didn't disappoint. Very good tasting comfort food that probably isn't the most heart healthy meal. The portion was very generous as well. The staff were very friendly and kept coffee and water filled w/o asking. Everything was nice and clean as well. Glad this was on my bookmark list. Great Food, Great Prices! This is a real down-home comfy place to eat. Hubster and I were in Sandpoint for 5 days. We ate breakfast out twice, both times here. Bring your appetite! We have been to the Hoot Owl many times with the family, and the food and service have been great. Not sure why, but when we went for breakfast a couple of days ago it was terrible. We waited what seemed like a long time for a couple of omelets, which when they did show up, did not have the ingredients they were supposed to come with, and not as good as usual. The service was sub par. When our waitress finally delivered our food, that was the last time we saw anyone. No one came by to freshen our drinks, or ask if we needed anything. Lastly, they seemed to be having a fly problem. They were flying around the restaurant, and us, constantly shooing them away. read more
