I really like the setup and decorations of the place. I love that I happen to be there during happy hour and they had a burger and fries that's normally about 12 bucks but for happy hour got it for like $7.50 I think. HopCat is such a pinnacle spot in the Lincoln bar scene and for good reason. Their appetizers are unique and addicting. I cannot get enough of their fries and pretzel nuggets. My friends and I actually lovingly refer to their fries as "crack fries." That's how addicting they are! They offer a wide selection of Nebraska beers on tap, which I love. And while I'm not really a dessert person, their crème brûlée cheesecake is BOMB! Lots of local options, but also beers from across the country, including two brown ales (my preference) and 4-5 IPAs (hubby's preferred beer style). The bartender made great recommendations for both of us. They have a really interesting menu. Hubby had a smash burger with a side of onion rings (not on the menu as a side, but he asked and they made it happen!). He said it was a solid burger (3.5 out of 5) and definitely not a first- date burger. I got the grilled cheese, which comes with a dill havarti and at least two other cheeses, plus apple slices and honey. Took 12 minutes to acknowledge our presence :/ Breakfast chicken and waffle special was delivered to the wrong customers. Added another 15 minutes to proper order. Chicken had the consistency of a rubber chicken microwaved to life. It matched my warmed too long Mac and Cheese with grilled chicken (delivered slightly ahead of the waffle special). It was a very busy Sunday noon hour in the Haymarket District in Lincoln. I believe Nebraska Women's Basketball was taking on Minnesota Golden Gophers at the Pinnacle Arena in 2 hours. We waited for 30 minutes before an open table was available. Selection of food was typical of brewery food and the overall presentation was good overall. Oh man. So sad! My boyfriend and I went after the game today because it was highly recommended. We entered with no masks because we are still adjusting to the "new" mask mandate. You guys, we are not anti maskers, always happy to put them on! The young male host immediately was rude and would not talk to us until we put them on. My boyfriend lost his at the game and we we're trying to ask for one but the kid was too busy talking over us and was just staring at him. Ok we get masked and then finally we get told a wait and we request an outside table. We know there's obviously a wait so we go to the bar and order a beer. About 20 minutes we get a text and walk back up to the host stand. Both of us are sipping a beer and I take my mask off because I think we are going outside to our requested patio seat. The young girl host proceeds take us to an inside seat and i kindly say that we wanted to sit outside. So the young boy host begins to rudely tell us that we will not be seated until we get our mask on, and I look at my boyfriend and his is up and I guess I took mine down to sip my beer. Before either of us can reply another young kid starts saying " don't worry we aren't afraid to cut you off". We are both smiling/confused. We get outside and kindly ask our waitress if those young kids are managers. We tell her about how crazy they were and apologized to her for now having to finish our drinks in her section and not tip. She was so sweet and actually checked to see who was at the host stand causing this little drama. She explained that sometimes people refuse to mask and they must have been taking it out on us. Lol. Well, I guess we won't be going back because that's super silly and someone should be training those kids to work in restaurants without harassing a guest. It's a pandemic. Trust me, we get it! It then took about 20-25 minutes before some came to take our drink order, while a big gaggle of them laughed and joked and ignored the few patrons in the establishment. Mind you, the place was pretty much empty. We ordered two dishes and the food was "eh". On a scale of 1-10, the food was probably about a 5. To me, this is a hipster diner with a good beer selection. I definitely enjoyed the beer. My group tried different beers, ranging from an ice cream ipa, a raspberry sour, a vanilla ale, and a hefe. The food was ok. My burger tasted like a burger. The two thin patties make meat pucks more than anything juicy. Came here on a Sunday for lunch before heading back out of town. The burger was a bit overcooked for my taste (the waitress didn't ask how I wanted it) but the flavor overall was pretty good. I had the Blue Cheese burger off their NEW spring menu 2024. I liked the Parmesan truffle fries too. I didn't realize it was a chain, but overall, it was good, not great. When the food did finally arrive, not only was it cold, there was no way to eat it, as there were no utensils included. That made for an interesting meal, to say the least. On top of that, they served Mac and cheese, with liquid cheese, in a cardboard container. It was cold and had fused itself to the container, becoming inedible. Half the greens in the salad were tough and inedible as well. Come to think of it, all the food was cold. This place is like a good idea with terrible execution. We were early enough to be on the beginning of the dinner rush and we watched the place fill up as we were there. Ordered the "killer Mac and cheese" and paid the 2$ more for chicken. Once you breach 12$ for a plate of Mac and cheese you really expect it to be more on the gormet side. After a pretty significant wait our food came and as for the Mac n cheese Unfortunately it was dry and not flavorful. The chicken was thoroughly over cooked and dry as well. But it was our 10year anniversary so far be it from me to piss and moan about things during the experience. The saving grace was we had a side of cheese sauce that my wife tossed on for me at the end after she said "here, your Mac is pretty dry". And so my last few bites were ok at best. So going to a place strictly based on Mac and cheese reviews, our dining experience taking over an hr, and being far less than dazzled, as a whole our experience was underwhelming to say the least. I'm probably gonna call it one and done. A carafe of mixed drink (the lux mule) and three entrees (killer mac,pizza mac, and fish and chips) ran 75$ not including tip. Hop Cat is a trendy burger joint with a stocked and lengthy beer list, but best known for their cracked "cosmik" fries and cheese sauce. Went there last night at 715pm. It was cold and snowy out but that did not deter us from getting a hot meal. I have been here a few times before. It has been pretty good before, but last night was disappointing. It was not packed. Probably a few dozen people at most. We ordered cheese curds and chips/salsa to start. The cheese curds were great; the chips were not fresh (a bit chewy) and the salsa tasted like it was poured out of a Tostitos jar. We ordered the Bar Zee Part Deux Loaded Burger and the Grand Royale Sloppy Joe. The restaurant did not get any busier at this time, but it still took well over 30 minutes to bring the entrees to the table. I was disappointing with the burger. It was ok, but not awesome. It was supposed to have an onion rings, but clearly did not. The sloppy joe was just ok too. If you have had the Leadbelly Cinnamon Roll, you are not missing out on the Royale. My boyfriend and i stopped in on our journey across the country. The food was great. We started with the southwest salad and wings both which were amazing. Then we had the impossible vegan burger and the cauliflower tacos. Everything was delicious. The burger especially was a hit. To drink i had two ciders which were sooo delicious. One was a pineapple passion fruit cider and the other was a blackberry cider. 10/10 recommend those ciders if you're less of a beer drinker. read more
