I was a little apprehensive about this place considering the reviews... But, either it was a bad night or they made adjustments based on the customer feedback, because I didn't have any issues. I have been here 3 times now. Once an hour before close on a Tuesday night, once in the middle of lunch rush on a Friday, and once around dinner time during the week. All 3 visits I was greeted & seated immediately. I chose to sit in the dining room, since I don't drink. But you can sit in the bar, they have high top tables. My server Diana C came over within a few minutes and took my drink order. Came back promptly with drinks, and took my food order. She was attentive and friendly, and the food came out pretty quickly each time. The food was prepared correctly, seasoned well, and portions were generous. They have a great variety of items on the menu to choose from and cover breakfast through dinner. The experience was great, and I had no complaints. So I went back two more times, and the service, food, and vibes were consistently good.

Came here after my niece did her band concert at school and this was the right place for a quick nosh. Got a cup of clam chowder which was just enough food. The niece got a burger and she seemed fine with it and my sister in law inhaled her tacos. Mom tried the fish and chips, but she was already done in by the clam chowder so she made me eat it. It was a little greasy and airy, so it wasn't my favorite. What I liked was the quick service and our waitress was very friendly and helpful. She also put our drinks in a to go cup since we barely drank it as we stuffed our mouths, so that was a nice touch.

Boneless wings partially filled from what i normally get. Inconsistent on the chefs behalf numerous times.

Is this the type of place that a person could have lunch casually by themself earlier in the day, maybe whip the laptop out and get some work done? Or is it mostly pretty busy, noisy, etc during the early afternoon?

She was pleasant and sat us in the sunshine on the patio. I was sad to see so few patrons. I will review the best part first: THE COCKTAILS: The spirits and craft cocktail selection was huge / the beer & wine not so much. My Old Fashioned was perfect! Food: Seafood Rosé Pasta (bay scallops, shrimp, northwest manila clams, rosé prosecco cream sauce, grilled bread) -- inconsistent cook on the different seafoods & the sauce was meh. Not worth $42.00 Grilled Romaine Salad (white balsamic bleu cheese dressing, gorgonzola, cherry tomatoes, aleppo toasted hazelnuts) -- plenty of romaine, could've been grilled longer / not much quantity of tomatoes or toasted hazelnuts -- basically a "side salad" for $15.00 Lobster Bisque (house smoked tomatoes, roasted red pepper, cream, butter poached langoustine lobster) -- tasted more like roasted tomato / red pepper soup (no lobster or seafood flavors) - there were 4 small pieces of poached?? langoustine lobster on top - I question poached because the pieces definitely had a bite to them. Worth $15.00 -- no. Due to reviews we had the Baklava Crumble (pistachios, honey, vanilla ice cream) -- basically cut up (very chewy, not crispy) baklava tossed over ice cream for $14.00 -- maybe a bad night for this dessert? We like to support small Olympia businesses and will go back for cocktails but the food costs are too high - we don't mind high costs IF we come away satisfied - unfortunately the food didn't measure up to the cost. As we drove away, we saw the "Budd Bay Cafe" was very busy - I think next time we'll have cocktails at Cynara, then cross the street for food and wine. We were intrigued with the "Clam Chowder Entrée" which is served à la minute (Washington manila clams, bacon, cream, celery, roasted potatoes, grilled bread) -- is it a deconstructed chowder?? $33.00 Sorry no pics.

Next best was the bread - it was perfectly soft inside with a crispy crust. Between how oily the dish was and my nose running from the increased spice as I continued eating, I wouldn't return for this dish. The eggs weren't noticeable in appearance or taste- I had to search for them. The "creamy grits" were creamy, but the black pepper taste was STRONG. Definitely ordered the side for the "creamy" factor, hoping when the server said harissa in the eggs would have a mild spice, that the grits would calm my mouth. The amount of pepper made this unsuccessful. But if you like black pepper a lot then you'll enjoy them. My son enjoyed the beignet's. The server was also the host and he was kind. It was easy to get his attention when needed. I didn't see anyone with a grin on their face after taking bites of their food. I looked around quite a bit out of curiosity. So for ambiance, kind and prompt service, and the possibilities of the menu I gave it 4 stars. We only tried the few things I mentioned. I did also appreciate the bottle of water ready on every table. Note that there is no kids menu and it's mostly table seating. So maybe try on your own or with other adults, and leave the kids at home?

I went to Firecreek Ale House for the steak special…read more The steak came and I looked at it. It looked like a steak. I cut into it. It had become a thing from the desert. Dry and hard and without much life left in it. You could have found something like it out there among the sagebrush after a long summer and not been surprised. I used A.1. A man should never have to use A.1 on a steak. There are things a man accepts and there are things he should not accept. But I had paid for the steak and I was hungry. So I used it. The vegetables were sautéed in something that had met teriyaki sauce and had liked the meeting. They tasted of teriyaki. Everything tasted of teriyaki. The vegetables had no other plans. I ordered an Old Fashioned. The bartender made it like a man who had been trained to pour things that came already mixed. He did not make the drink so much as release it from its bottle and put it in front of me. I drank it. It was not an Old Fashioned I would remember. The servers were having a good time. There was a reunion going on near the bar. Maybe school friends. Maybe people who had worked there before. Maybe both. They were happy to see one another. They had more interest in their friends than they did in the man trying to fight his dinner for any semblance of enjoyment. The room was trying to be two things. It wanted to be a golf course clubhouse where men could talk about their scores and the price of things. It also wanted to be a working man's place where nobody cared what your score was. It had the look of both. It belonged to neither. Outside, the last light was leaving the golf course. The fairways went dark first and then the trees. A cart moved slowly across the distance with its lights on. Inside, the reunion was still going on. I stood for a moment and watched the cart disappear into the dark. Then I went to the car. There are good evenings on a golf course. This experience felt more akin to a bad night at an Applebees.

Aside from pizza, a burger and fries are Crankypants' favorite meal. This one he pronounced good, but not as good at his favorite (insert name of a nice casual dining restaurant in downtown Oly that opened at the height of the pandemic). I wasn't feeling all that bread, so I had a Caesar salad with a burger patty on top. If you're gonna serve a Caesar, it needs to be real (ie, at least a hint of anchovies for the umami). This one was pretty bland and the croutons needed to be crisper with more garlic and butter. They definitely deserve extra credit for sourcing local grass fed, grass finished beef. It's more expensive but it's better for you and the planet. I love really fresh cut fries with the skin on, and these would have been perfection, if they had only been served hot from the fryer. Finally, the beer: I had a pale ale that was just OK. Crankypants felt the same about his. Their glasses are really nice and enhance the pleasure of sipping. It wouldn't take much for this to move up to a 4 star destination. For that reason, we'll probably try it again sometime next year.

Swing Wine Bar Review: A Disappointing Anniversary Dinner My…read morewife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary, and I chose Swing Wine Bar as a surprise because I wanted the evening to be special. Based on the restaurant's reputation and reviews, I expected a memorable dining experience and a wonderful way to celebrate together. Unfortunately, while the restaurant made a strong first impression, the experience steadily declined and ultimately left us disappointed. Upon arrival, we were seated at a great table with a beautiful view that offered a sense of privacy. At first, everything seemed promising. However, after introducing himself, our server appeared distant from the very beginning. When he asked what we would like to drink, everyone at the table requested water. From that point on, his demeanor seemed to change noticeably. He became more formal, less friendly, and responded to our questions about the menu with very brief answers. He brought our water and told us he would return to take our order. After waiting nearly twenty minutes without seeing him again, I eventually got up and looked for him myself, asking if he could come take our order. He followed me back to the table, and each of us ordered a different entrée. Throughout the interaction, he seemed detached and uninterested in creating a welcoming dining experience. When we first arrived, he had placed small plates and silverware on the table. Later, after we had ordered and he happened to be passing by, I asked whether bread or a salad was included with the meals. His response was simply, "No," before immediately turning around and walking away. It was an abrupt and somewhat dismissive interaction that further reinforced the impression that customer service was not a priority. About twenty minutes later, our food arrived. I ordered the New York steak. The steak itself was decent, and the gravy served with it was quite good. However, the broccoli was burned, and the meal consisted of little more than the steak, mashed potatoes, and two very small carrots. Overall, it felt like an expensive version of a basic roast beef dinner. To be fair, not every dish missed the mark. My son's pasta was enjoyable overall, although the shrimp was overcooked and there was very little sauce on the pasta. My wife's hamburger was well prepared, and my father-in-law's brisket was flavorful and tender. After we finished eating, our empty plates sat on the table for quite some time. Eventually, another employee noticed and came over to clear them. A short while later, our server returned, collected my plate, and said he would be back so we could order dessert. When he returned, he listed the dessert options, but none of them sounded particularly appealing to anyone at the table, so we declined. I then asked for the check. Ironically, this was the quickest service we received all evening. The check arrived almost immediately, and I paid it without delay. The final disappointment came with what should have been a thoughtful anniversary gesture. Our server dropped off a card that read, "Thank you for celebrating your anniversary with us." While the gesture itself was appreciated, the card was unsigned and presented without any personal touch. Rather than feeling like a sincere acknowledgment of our special occasion, it felt more like an obligation. What should have been a special surprise anniversary dinner for my wife ultimately became a frustrating experience. While some of the food was enjoyable, the inattentive service, lack of hospitality, and absence of any meaningful personal touch overshadowed the positive aspects of the evening. For a restaurant that presents itself as a destination for celebrations and special occasions, Swing Wine Bar fell well short of my expectations. Based on our experience, I would not recommend it.
