I really struggled with deciding whether or not to give this three or four stars. Consider this a 3 1/2 star rating. To start, service was excellent! The cashier provided me with some general updates about the business, including them getting taps installed for beer. I had a lot of food to carry outside and she also helped me carry everything out without me needing to ask. I really appreciate that! The employee serving the food suggested that I order a whole pound of the beef rib since it is only offered on Saturdays. I had originally requested just 1/4lb of it to try and he said that I would only get a taste and suggested I get the whole rib. He also made additional recommendations for how to enjoy the leftovers. In total, here's what we ordered : one beef rib for $49.50, one beef brisket sandwich, one pulled pork sandwich, a large mac & cheese, a large collard greens, and a large potato salad. Total came to $120~, not including tip. I am highlighting the beef rib because I am honestly disappointed that I didn't speak up when I was at the restaurant. Our food was plated, and we went outside to eat. As soon as I cut into the beef rib, my boyfriend and I quickly realized that it was almost entirely fat (I'm adding the pic to this review)! Not only do I feel like I'm paying for the weight of the bone but now I feel like I got barely 1/4lb of meat and paid $50 for it. That truly felt like I was being taken advantage of. If there were specific items that were only available by the pound, they should also advertise it as such. But it was advertised that you could get smaller portions to try. Even with that being said, how can you possibly charge someone $50 for a pound of fat?! The sandwiches and sides themselves were different. They were all so good and incredibly flavorful. Both sandwiches were stacked with meat and they were not fatty at all. If I ever decide to return, I would not be getting the actual barbecued meat because I do not trust the quality of what I'm receiving. However, I would recommend the sandwiches. They are also in an affordable price, ranging from $15-$20. The sides are also reasonably priced - $5 for the small and $9 for the large.

I visited right before lunch time and wanted to try several items but they were out of sausages and tri-tip sandwiches so I had to pivot. I'll be back for those. Ended up ordering brisket, pulled pork, and several small sides (beans, potato salad, and mac & cheese) to share. The beans had large pieces of meat in it which was great. The potato salad tasted more egg-y than other potato salads and I liked that too! The barbecue sauce was more on the vinegar side which is different than usual and I loved it! If I had to critique something: I would have liked to have more pickled veggies included to match the proportion of meat. I was a bit surprised to have paid almost $100 but it ended up lasting a few meals and was delicious. The prices have gone up since the last menu pictures posted on yelp and are ~20% more than other chain barbecue places but can be justified by the fact that the Oakland location is rated Bib Gourmand on the Michelin guide. It definitely tasted good quality. The parking lot is meter enforced and there is very limited street parking.

I had high hopes for Horn Barbecue given the hype surrounding this place when it first opened up in Oakland. Maybe something changed after they moved to Lafayette, but it wasn't that good. Got there a little before opening since we were expecting a line, but there wasn't one. Ending up trying a few things: beef rib, brisket, pulled pork, cheddar sausage, pit beans. The pit beans had a lot of meat but were on the saltier side. Cheddar sausage was juicy and had a good bite. Pulled pork was good. Nicely seasoned, and the barbecue sauce paired nicely with it. Probably my favorite meat out of the ones I tried. The brisket and beef rib were on the drier side. I wish they were juicier. The brisket was tough. It wasn't a melt in your mouth type of meat that I expected. The staff are amazing. Super friendly and patient. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again.

Wow, we've added Horn BBQ to the short list of amazing places. To be clear, it won't be amazing to everyone. As the header states, rustic BBQ. Simple menu, no flash, just outstanding food. We waited about 20 minutes in line. The two guys serving food were engaging, personable, and truly loved their craft. The person who got us our sides was delightful as well. The meat is so tender, that for the brisket or pulled pork, it's kneaded or pulled (respectively). No knives for that. We had brisket sandwiches, ribs, cheesy potatoes and pit beans. All were delicious, but the beans were especially amazing. Louisiana Hot Sauce: yes, the right thing to do. Like any good BBQ, there are some process oddities. Why are the fountain drinks where everyone is in the queue? And perhaps a menu all could see in advance would speed up the line. And the rolls of napkins are not very convenient. That being said, who cares? It's a wonderful place. Like I said, some won't like it. For them, Sauced in Walnut Creek will be a better fit: totally ok food, ok service, ok experience. Horn BBQ, thanks for all that you do!

No line at all on a Sunday afternoon. As someone who's lived in Austin and can attest to top tier BBQ - this rivals Texas BBQ like no other spot I've tried in the Bay Area. Everything is good. Like everything. I'd say the brisket and ribs are the best meats but the beans are what really steal the show. Couldn't recommend enough

We went on a Friday afternoon, after 2pm - perfect timing for a relaxing and well attended experience. This location offers many tables and greets its patrons with nice choice of blues music. I had a brisket sandwich and my friend had the half chicken. Man, that sammie was tender, flavorful and satisfying. My friend said the chicken was yummy and tender as well. After we finished, we had the pleasure of meeting Matt and his brother afterwards and chatted a bit, reminiscing about the old Emeryville location (where I live). I miss it dearly, but luckily, this location isn't far. I will be visiting again! Looking forward to a decadent "wagyu-type" brisket offering :-)

Barbecue - they just opened the location and it's amazing . Mom and I came For a relaxed lunch , we ordered the brisket, pulled pork, potato salad, bread, pickles. **3.5 Stars** East Bay BBQ Fans of Texas-style BBQ have inevitably heard of Horn Barbecue based in Oakland and helmed by Pitmaster Matt Horn I've never been to the original location and have read tidbits about the recent press issues but decided to stop by one of their newer locations and try for myself The Lafayette space has been open a little less than a year (Dec 2024) and their Elk Grove location just opened (June 2025) with another fourth location already planned. It's clear Horn is doing well and in expansion mode. I stopped by for dinner and many items were sold out including the Beef Rib (Sat only), multiple sides, and banana cream pie. Luckily, they still had brisket (both fatty and lean), pork ribs and shredded pork Manning the station was Jordan Horn, the brother of Matt Horn and he was personable and funny talking about the expanding business and favorites of guests We sampled the fatty brisket, pork ribs, and pulled pork and had a side of mac 'n cheese. Everything was solid. The brisket was flavorful but would have loved it more moist and tender. Similar with the pork ribs. Pulled pork was similar to other places but definitely had to lean more into their supplied bbq sauce Admittedly, we came at end of day and the brisket had probably finished hours before. Jordan also gave some great pointers on how to order next time and I appreciate that. For barbeque fans, it's nice to have another option in East Bay (especially one that serves beef ribs) and not have to travel to Oakland. We drove from Campbell to try this place, as the desire to find quality BBQ is very strong. Sadly, we were somewhat disappointed. We arrived at 6 pm and they were announcing they didn't have any ribs left. We ordered 1lb of brisket ($40/lb), coleslaw, potato salad, and mac-n-cheese. The meat looks lovely but it didn't have any smokiness and it was somewhat dry. It wasn't tender even though it looked like it. Pouring more sauce on it didn't help much. The coleslaw was good. It had a nice vinegar/mustard flavor and was better than most we've had. We were thankful it wasn't thick with mayonnaise. The potato salad was pretty good too. It was creamy and the potato pieces were of good size. We would've liked some more onion and maybe a little less creamy. The mac-n-cheese was a disappointment. It was overcooked and the cheese mixture wasn't creamy nor flavorful. Finding good quality mac-n-cheese with real cheddar and a crisp top is hard to find. The staff is very nice but the interior is REALLY smokey. To the point of making our eyes water instantly. The chairs are the usual metal hard simple chairs and we had to eat outside due to the smoke inside. There were no paper towel rolls outside but at least we found seating. One disappointment is that they had their catering van in the handicap parking space and there was only one other in a higher level of the parking lot. We are quite picky about our bbq and this just didn't have a shining star with what we tried. For $40/lb, the expectation was pretty high and was not met. We left the restaurant and went for additional eating at The Hideout Kitchen.

I heard good things about this place. I really wanted to like it. Not saying that I was totally against it. The meat was delicious. Very tender, with good sauce. The greens were extremely salty. I couldn't even eat them. I did enjoy the potato salad and Mac n cheese. I was there shortly after opening hours. I wanted a brisket sandwich and was disappointed to learn they were out of buns. You will have to make sure you have time to spare. The service was not great at all. It became crowded fast! A very long line. Only one person taking orders, preparing the orders and cashing them out. There is plenty of seating, inside and outside. Food is priced by weight. Two ribs were $20. With a sausage, greens and beans the total was $50.

Came in on a Sunday afternoon looking for a hearty meal and were not disappointed. After looking at the menu for a little more than a split second, we were approached by someone behind counter asking if we needed help ordering. We showed them a picture we had seen in Yelp (by Eric G. - first yelp pic check it out) and lo and behold Eric served the platter of food himself. The food was excellent: full of flavor, so tender the meat fell off the bone. Two delicious sides: house greens and mac n cheese, both perfect compliments to the table of meats! Will definitely come back again, with friends and family. Make sure to try this incredible BBQ spot in Lafayette. P.S. they play great music and the outdoor seating makes for a great time!

Came here craving barbecue. You do have to pay for parking in their parking lot. The service is informative as it was a first time visit. Expensive for meat but that's expected. The ambiance was casual with tv playing in the background. Served fast and it was delicious for barbecue. Would recommend trying.

We are always pleasantly greeted upon entry. This restaurant has a welcoming feel and the food leaves you satisfied. I feel like I have been transported into my grandmother's kitchen every time. The meat is consistently tender and well seasoned. You won't need barbecue sauce unless that's your preference. Don't skip the dessert either because you will be passing up a treat. Finally went to Horn BBQ yesterday. We didn't arrive until around 5:30pm. As soon as we arrived that made an announcement that there was only brisket left. Everything else was sold out. Remember they close at 8:30pm. Anyway, we ordered the brisket sandwich. This was the most tender brisket we have ever had. Prices are a little high. Sandwich is just that a sandwich, no sides. So happy to have great barbecue on this side of the Caldecott!! Horn Barbecue was needed!! Amazing food, great flavor, vibe, friendly staff!! I've had the pulled pork, ribs, brisket, collard greens, macaroni and cheese, and coleslaw, all were delicious!! The meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender and seasoned to smoky perfection!! This was a ridiculous, overpriced experience. My friend and I got one gigantic beef rib and six average to small BBQ pork ribs. The cost was $100.70! The soda machine wasn't working, and another review noted this problem 9 days ago. There were no water cups. No liquor license. If you care about your customers, at least go out and get some plastic cups! The beef rib was juicy, but it was too salty. No additional sauce containers at the table. The service was disorganized and even seemed indifferent. Reading the other reviews, I see that I am not alone in my observations; there are too many reviews describing missing basics like cutlery, sauce, soda, etc. read more

We are so lucky to have Horn in Lafayette! Slow cooked bbq at its finest and the staff goes above and beyond to hook up their customers. They give you a healthy portion of meat on sandwiches and the ribs and brisket are second to none. We gave our 7 month old son a rib bone to suck on and I've never seen his face light up like this before. The food was phenomenal! We came for my partners birthday and brought our four boys! We ordered the brisket, brisket sandwich, spare ribs, Mac n cheese and beans. Every item was better than the last and every bite was delectable. If you're looking for good, legit bbq in the east bay, come to Horn. The vibe was chill, space was clean, the guys working behind the counter were super helpful, assisted us with ordering and cleaned up our trays quickly. It was a great experience. Finally made it to Horn and it lived up to the hype. Excellent BBQ. Had pulled pork, brisket and spicy sausage. Better than the old Bo's and Bonehead, and well worth the trip. Horn does not sell beer or wine, which was a bummer, but it is adjacent to Headlands Brewery and many beer lovers simply brought their BBQ to Headlands to enjoy the best of both worlds! read more

Probably the worst run restaurant in the entire Contra Costa County. This place shouts dysfunction. Total incompetence. the original HORN in Oakland had some of the best barbecue west of the Mississippi. At times the Lafayette location has been able to match that. But whatever is going on behind the scenes is ruining this restaurant. read more

This barbecue restaurant is one that we will visit again! It's a simple menu where you buy the main entrées by weight, which is a little unusual for us. What is in the photo was more than enough for my wife and me. That smoky flavor is one that is the big draw for the great barbecue meats they have! Nice atmosphere with a great classic rock music too. Very friendly and personable service as well! read more

Easily one of the best BBQ spots I've been to. The brisket was insane--super tender, full of flavor, and had that perfect smoky crust. Ribs were meaty and fell right off the bone. You can tell everything's made with care. It's a chill, no-frills kind of place, but the food speaks for itself. Portions were more then enough and worth ever penny , everything came out hot, and the staff was super cool too. The owner took his time to come talk to me and my girlfriend and explained the history of how him and his brother started. You can tell the passion he has! Definitely worth the hype. Ambiance - Music, creatively painted inside, indoor/outdoor seating. Service - Excellent! We got to meet the younger Horn Brother. Nice chat about siblings, as we have four sons their age. Food - Dear Lawd! We ordered a Whole Chicken (excellent flavor & very moist), Hot Link (best hot link I've ever had), Collard Greens (with nice meat chunks throughout), Potato Salad (to perfection), Beans (great flavor) and Banana Pudding (perfect combination of ingredients) for dessert. I went to Horn BBQ in Lafayette 2 weeks ago before I went golfing and it was outstanding. I had 5 bones, some beans and coleslaw. I am a bean man so I started with the beans. i really could have stopped there. The beans I had were excellent with chunks of brisket in them. Awesome, what a value! Then I like to eat coleslaw with my beans and I like a vinegary coleslaw and it was perfect, it is like they knew just how I like it. Maybe it is because my people are from Texas. The crowning jewel were the ribs. They had just enough bark on them & were cooked exquisitely, & they were so flavorful & succulent.. The staff was also friendly and courteous. I will be eating there again with my son, before our next T-Time. They also have a green health rating from the Health Department. I don't eat at restaurants that don't have a green. They got a hole in 1! read more

First, Matt Horn was behind the counter. Second, he hand swabbed the brisket and ribs my friend and I ordered. He even gave us a sample of the burnt ends and HOLY COW this is the BEST BBQ I'VE EVER HAD. Hands down. I tried all the places in Oakland and Berkeley. B-Side was the only restaurant I went back to and that closed years ago. I've been waiting for good BBQ and this is IT even better than 4505 in SF. PLUS the best collards (really well seasoned and peppery) and beans with hunks of meat so big they could be a meal on their own. I can't wait to go back and try everything else. read more

Food was fantastic! We tried most of the meats and all of them were perfectly smoked so that you can taste the meat and the smoke. Be prepared to wait, so relax. There will be a line. They don't rush your food prep, but they do it in front of you so you can see that work is being done. Sandwiches are a process, so be aware of that if it's busy. It seems like there might be a second cooking big meat after 7pm, because they were out of sausage and other stuff when we ordered. However, the line got much longer an around 7 and we saw at least one person with sausage. Insider secret? read more

Husband had the BBQ beef brisket (that was so tender that the server was able to shred with his gloved hands) with mac & cheese. The amazing part was their ability to fill a hamburger bun with twice as much meat (enough meat to make 2 decent size sandwiches) sweetened with their house BBQ sauce. I love a great BBQ beef rib. This one was at least 10 inches long, full of flavorful meat. I ended up taking 1/2 home as I had the cabbage side dish which is their grandmother's recipe. I enjoyed every bite in that small container. I had to buy another order but twice as much than the 1st container. We enjoyed all! Service was a little slow but then it all depends on the people in front of you & what they ordering. There appears to be one person slicing the meat and another to serve the sides. Not sure if there was room for a second server to help with the meat orders when the line is backed up. Location is in the middle of Mt Diablo Blvd in Lafayette. Inside is a very casual set up. But like one of the previous raters, the establishment should think about: 1. Relocating the soda machine, maybe across the opposite wall (near the register). 2. This would free up wall space for better signage and pathway for patrons who are waiting in line to order. Might consider posting paper menus (under plastic) for those waiting in line. They can plan their order before they get to the front of the line. 3. Paper towels are not available at each table. Relocate paper towel holders above tables or make paper towels available at each table. I'm still giving this business 4 stars as the food is delicious & service was good. Cost of beef has gone up, but I was surprised at the cost of a beef rib. .85 oz =$32! You can bet that I had better enjoy every bite! Or take home the leftovers. Next time I'll order the brisket (which cost &$18). There was enough to make 2 sandwiches. I love beef ribs but suspending ordering until beef prices go down. Will definitely try them again. PS...So grateful that I didn't go home smelling like BBQ. Keep up the great BBQ! read more

Will we get good or mediocre drinks today? Will our drinks be accurate or would we need to spend some more time to get our drinks fixed? Always a gamble, but hey, I do love to gamble (usually in a different setting lol). Sometimes the drinks are really good. The ones I've had the most consistencies are their house milk tea and their tropical fruit tea. Recommendation is to order everything as-is since if things (such as sugar level) are adjusted, it's most likely watered down. Luckily the drinks aren't way too sweet, but still a bit sweeter than I'd like, and I'd prefer a bit more tea flavor. My daughter has been big on their Thai tea, but after some inconsistencies with flavor, she's switched to their matcha horchata drink. Pretty good, and they have other kinds of drinks like that too. My son likes the house milk tea with lychee jelly, and the husband enjoys the Oreo drinks here, but they don't taste right in my opinion. I like their house milk tea, jasmine milk tea, tropical fruit tea, and once a while, their ube taro drink. On the safe side, I normally stick with tropical tea and house milk tea at this location. Props to Lilikoi for having some "unique" drinks such as mango almighty (mango smoothie with tajin and chamoy), various horchata drinks, and more. They seem to specialize more in the tropical fruit teas, so highly recommend for those.

I noticed they have ube coffee on the menu. Unfortunately, the employees told me they were out of ube. I ordered the Thai milk tea with no ice at 50% sweet. Given the heavy rain and cold weather, I asked if they could make the drink hot and they said they don't do hot drinks. Really? Every boba spot I've been to in the 4.5 years I've lived in Contra Costa County - including Sharetea, Mr. Green Bubble, Teaspoon, and Yi Fang - offer hot drinks. Everywhere EXCEPT Lilikoi. As for the drink itself, I could taste the Thai tea flavor somewhat but it seemed a bit watered down. I've had better Thai milk tea elsewhere. The drink cost $5, which is less compared to other boba spots. But I'd rather pay a bit more for drinks that don't tasted watered down. I don't think I'll return, even if in the area.

Horn BBQ in Lafayette, CA, is a fantastic new spot that I highly recommend. However, I didn't give it 5 stars solely because the one-hour wait was a bit excessive. An hour-plus wait time shouldn't be the norm. To make matters worse, about 30 minutes into our wait, we were informed that they had run out of brisket and spare ribs. Despite this disappointing news, my wife and I decided to stick around, and as a result, the line shrank, allowing us to move up by ten spots. My wife, who is pregnant, found a table to sit at while I waited in line. The service here is truly A+. Several staff members checked on her regularly, asking if she needed water and how she was feeling. It was heartwarming to see them take turns ensuring she was comfortable while I stood in line. One downside was that there was only one food preparer on duty, despite having ample counter space for more staff. This made me wonder why it took so long to get through the line! When I finally reached the preparer, the entire process--from placing my order to sitting down--took less than 5 minutes. Now, onto the food! I was extremely excited to try the new Horn Barbecue location in Lafayette, as I've never had the chance to visit the original Oakland spot. With all the hype surrounding this Bay Area favorite and its celebrity chef, I had high expectations. Unfortunately, the quality of the food fell short. I ordered the brisket and beef ribs, opting to focus solely on the meat without any sides. Starting with the positives, the beef rib was soft and tender, with perfectly rendered fat and seasoning that was spot on. However, the biggest issue was how dry it was--there was virtually no beefy juice to speak of, which completely overshadowed its good qualities. The brisket had similar problems. While the slice of the point had great smoke, seasoning, and perfectly rendered fat, it was also far too dry to enjoy. Given that I was the only customer at the time, I suspect that I may have been served day-old meat. As someone who has cooked brisket and beef ribs before, I know it's rare for such fatty cuts to lose their juices unless reheated or improperly stored. While the food wasn't worth the calories, I will say the location and ambience itself were nice and clean, with plenty of parking. The staff were friendly, which was appreciated. I heard someone complaining and I asked "why do you patiently wait in line at lesser quality places or a in-and-out line but not for real and good food?" Extremely disappointed with my visit to this BBQ joint during what should have been their peak lunch hour. At 12:30 PM, with barely any customers present, they didn't have any of most of their advertised meats. Their menu didn't even have a big variety of options to start with some of which included ribs and tri-tip, but they only had two meat choices available when we arrived. The disconnect between their advertised menu and actual offerings is frustrating and feels like false advertising. To make matters worse, they don't even serve beer - a staple at most BBQ establishments. For a BBQ restaurant, the limited selection and lack of basic amenities makes it hard to justify a visit. Management needs to seriously improve their inventory planning and better align their menu with what they can actually provide to customers. Until they get their operation in order, I can't recommend this place. Save yourself the disappointment and find another spot for your BBQ fix. read more

We visited approximately 45 minutes after opening. Mac and cheese was visibly from the day before. They were unwrapping the meat from plastic and foil, it also appeared to be from the previous day. They "ran out" of pork ribs, 45 minutes after opening they didn't have chicken. No other sides were present. The restaurant want extremely hot and full of smoke. Definitely a disappointment to say the least. I forgot to add that we waited in line for over 20 minutes before we reached the counter to be advised that they pretty much had nothing we wanted. As soon as you step inside, the aroma hits you--it's absolutely delightful, almost irresistible! My boyfriend and I ordered the spare ribs, prime brisket, pulled pork, hot link, and some cheddar, banana bread pudding and let me tell you, it never fails to satisfy! This place is great, i've been a few times now and Lafayette is lucky to have Horn BBQ. Parking is easy, the restaurant is great, and everyone who works there is super inviting. And then there's the food, it's excellent! I haven't had a chance to try *everything* on the menu yet but i've gotten through maybe 1/2 of it. Brisket, pork and beef ribs, chicken, most of the sides - they're all excellent. There's one clear downside though, i always eat too much when i'm there and this most recent visit was no exception. read more

We were so excited to try this place. Food was good, but what was left of it. We came Saturday at 5:30 and the only left was brisket. Which is good for business but bad for customers. Service took forever, we waited in line for 35 minutes with only three people in front of us, which seemed odd. Only two people of shift. read more
