Horn Barbecue is, in a word, magnificent. It's easily worth the drive from anywhere in the Bay Area, if not farther. I'm a huge barbecue fan, having grown up in the South and having family from Kansas, and this is the first time I've ever had barbecue in California that measures up to the very best from back home. Every single item here is a work of art. The brisket is unbelievably juicy, flavorful, and tender - and I have high standards, since I'd say at least 70% of the briskets I've tried elsewhere were unacceptable to true barbecue connoisseurs. The short ribs were somehow better than those you'd find in restaurants that do nothing but ribs. The hot links and chicken sausage were also the best I've ever had - yes, the chicken sausage! Whatever it is they do to make them, it's phenomenal (and they sell out all too often). Even the sides are incredible, including the best macaroni and cheese anywhere, and I do mean anywhere. They provide their amazing sauce on the side for the meats, but I don't even bother with it. The barbecue is totally flavorful and juicy without it. The staff are kind, fun, and welcoming - they treat you like family. One of the owners came out and chatted with us, and he's just the greatest guy. Of course, they're also totally dedicated to their craft. It's not unusual for the head chefs to pull all-nighters to get their brisket just right. The restaurant itself is a rustic, Texas-style eatery, which it exactly what it should be - simple, relaxed, and totally focused on the amazing food. Parking is easy, too. The only downside is, you may have to wait in line sometimes - it's popular. But other times, you can walk right in and get your plate of perfection right away. I would eat here every day if I could, and I can only say that about three or four restaurants on Earth (and I've traveled and dined extensively). Horn Barbecue is not to be missed. read more

This place ain't cheap, but its darn good. This is the best place to load up on protein in Lafayette. One thing they do here is that they keep it fair and square - they weigh every meat that they plate, so you know you are getting your money's worth (and sometimes a little more). We typically get the pork ribs and the beef. Both are cooked to perfection and made fresh. You know how other BBQ places cook the meat and let it sit all day - they don't do that here. They make new meat every hour. Like every place in Lafayette, the decor is clean and neat and well-put-together. The staff here is friendly and helpful. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, as well as game days, this place can get quite busy. Best to call ahead. For Father's Day, I told my wife I wanted to find the best BBQ in the Bay Area. I legitimately spent the night before on yelp, the morning of on Reddit, and a lot of time plotting - all signs pointed to Horn Barbecue. We arrived later than we anticipated to and were just grateful if we would be served a plate. We got there right as things were almost sold out. To our surprise, We were able to secure lean brisket, pulled pork, and tri tip. All of it was the best I have ever had, and we absolutely will spread the word and come back. Wow---The food has gone from 5 star to 1 star in less than a year..SO DISAPPOINTING. The first meals I had there were outstanding, complex smoky flavor, tender meats, incredible smoky textured beans with pieces of pork, and succulent greens. The last two times, one 2 months ago and another just today-- tough brisket, no bun available, NO GREENS avail. The pit beans looked and tasted like they came out of a can, runny, no pork, and tasted mostly of vinegar. no texture or smokiness. The BBQ sauce, again so disappointing, mostly sweet, no spice or complexity as present originally. AND the place was deserted. No customers at all inside or out. Unless they clean up their act and get back to quality this place is a has been. I will NOT be returning. read more

Food is good, ordered beef brisket and burnt ends. Tender and tasty. Love the bbq sauce, very flavorful with a nice tang. I removed a star because, I went in to order takeout and there was only one employee handling the customers. He was doing double duty cutting the meat and filling the sides, packing it up and then dealing with the cash register too! There were also door dash customers waiting and their orders were not ready. Not efficient at all and took longer than it should have. I was 3rd in line and it took over 40 minutes. Very frustrating. He boxed everything and because his gloves were full of grease from handling the meat, the box was covered in grease! Gave me no bag to carry it in so I had to wrap it in napkins to protect my car from all that mess( it was a to go order). Also used those terrible cardboard boxes that continually pop open, they need to use a better to go container. Prices are not cheap here so I found that to be a lousy cheap o container as they can certainly upgrade that. The guy that worked there was very nice and had a great smile so good attitude there. Just need to get more employees to speed up service and a more professional presentation for their to go boxes. Otherwise good is top notch read more

Gonna be a long one. Sorry, that's how I do. I made it to the original Oakland restaurant before it burned down, but never had a chance to submit a review. Had I done so, the review would have been very positive. Staff and food were great. Once I heard Horn was opening in Lafayette, which is closer to me in Sacramento, I knew I would have to make a trip. We arrived ~20mins before 12pm on a Saturday, which is when they're supposed to open. The OPEN sign was already up and two groups were already inside, one at the counter, and one waiting in front of me. Let me quickly address the only "issue" RE: my visit. The first group was getting quite a lot of food, in two separate orders. Still, with one person working the cutting station and one working the sides/register, it took a LOT longer than it should have to put their order together. For real, it took a solid 15-20 mins. Since so many others have commented on the issues with the food prep timing, so I won't beat this one to death. When the woman in front of me ordered (just brisket) things moved much faster. I will say, after we ordered and sat down with our food, and the line at the door started growing, another person came out to help at the cutting station. That def helped things move along. I felt bad for the cashier, who was bouncing between sides, ringing people up, answering the phone, and dealing with people like me asking for misc stuff. She kept her cool, was doing a good job, and was very friendly. On to the important/good stuff. Here is what I ordered: -(2) beef ribs (3.3lbs) -1.5 lbs brisket from the point -1.1 lbs pork ribs -1/2 chicken -1 jalapeño/cheddar sausage link -Large granny's potatoes -Large Mac & cheese -Small pit beans After tax and a $10 tip, including a $20 discount for using the inKind app, the total was right at $300. YIKES. Yes, it is crazy expensive. But, what isn't these days? Also, even with me, my Wife, and two daughters attacking this collection with vigor, the leftovers will continue feeding us for a week. The beef ribs stole the show. They were perfectly seasoned...guessing just salt and pepper...so rich, flavorful, moist, perfect amount of smoke. I've had beef ribs from the best in Texas, Franklin, Terry Black's, La Barbecue, etc, and these rank right up there with those. Brisket was amazing too. Not as rich and peppery as the beef ribs but that's to be expected. It's actually a nice companion to the ribs. I saw a few reviews with pics of brisket which looked a bit dry, but that was not my experience. I'm not a huge BBQ pork rib fan. I tend to gravitate towards beef ribs and brisket. But, the pork spare ribs were a real surprise. Meaty, nicely seasoned, great smoke flavor, nicely sauced, fat perfectly rendered. Another surprise was the chicken. I got it mainly because my girls are not as heavy into beef as I am. But, we ended up all loving it and it got picked over more than any other item. Sausage is another item I like, but just don't need to have when brisket and ribs are on the menu. Still, I didn't try it before so I wanted to give it a shot this time. It was good. Well balanced, nice snap, not too spicy. As for the sides, the Mac & Cheese was def the highlight. Shells cooked perfectly, oh so cheesy, and great flavor. Granny's potatoes were good. Despite what other reviews stated, mine were not "too cheesy". They had a good flavor, not too cheesy or greasy, and were nicely seasoned. Unfortunately, the pit beans were a huge letdown. The beans weren't fully cooked so they were more like chewing jelly beans than BBQ beans. The key issue was that they had WAY too much BBQ sauce or whatever sauce they put in them. It completely overpowers the flavor of the beans. The huge chunks of brisket in them were great but the sauce dominated the flavor, and not in a good way. I suppose some people prefer them this way but not me. In general, I was extremely happy with the food and the staff I interacted with were awesome. Although I cannot put Horn at the same level as Franklin, La Barbecue, and other Texas BBQ kings, no doubt, Horn is high end BBQ. I am so happy to have them in NorCal and will def be going back. If I could, I would rate this visit 4.5 stars, but since I can't, and 4 stars just ain't right, they get 5. read more

So, so, so good! Hubby surprised me with Horn Barbecue and it hit the spot. The Hubs stopped by Horn to pick up some sides to add to the tri-tip we had cooked at home. It was our first time at Horn and what a treat! Walked in for sides and came out with a nice variety of everything! The brisket was delicious, the greens got me still smacking my lips and the ribs were falling off the bone. Definitely will be back! What a wonderful Saturday meal and now it's time for a nap. Incredible, mouth wateringly good! They've got the smoker out back pumping out fresh meats, and man are they good! I went for the brisket sandwich since I assumed that was the staple, plus a couple slices of tri tip on the side and I practically swallowed it whole. The tri tip is actually the sleeper hit, that's for sure what I'll be getting next time. I also got a side of beans (cooked with even more brisket) which was amazing, and of course the BBQ sauce... I drove for 45 mins to the Lafayette store only to hear they only have ribs and chicken. I've heard that this location has a history of not having menu items during regular business hours. Previously, I had their tri tip sandwich and it was the best ever. We arrived less than two hours after opening, and all they had was ribs and chicken only. Came back 6 days later to get everything we loved and try everything we hadn't tried the first time. Got big beans and Mac n Cheese, because they are so good. The beans were meaty and absolutely fantastic as before. The Mac n Cheese was good, not as cheesy gooey as last time, but still delicious. Granny potatoes were cheesy and good, potato salad was savory with a touch of mustard, enjoyed it, Cole slaw was excellent as last time. Now for the meats- got a whole chicken instead of half and it was as great as last time. Beef ribs stupendous, pork rib delicious and the cheesy jalapeno link is extraordinary. I've had their BBQ at their original location a few years ago & thought it was great. It's not as good as I remembered here. The brisket was tender, but lacked smoke flavor. You can tell just by looking at the thin smoke ring. The hot link & spare ribs were good. The potato salad & coleslaw were very bland. The worst part was the service. They had just one person taking orders. He would take an order then take the meat out of the hot hold & took it back to the kitchen for them to cut. He would be gone for minutes at a time! Sky high pricing in comparison to the previous Boneheads Texas BBQ. You get less than half the food for over twice the price. The greens and brisket we over salted. My one person meal ended up being $60 and I left a little hungry. There are better options out there.. I use to eat at Boneheads weekly. I can only speak based on the food but it feels very much like they are not smoking the meat for longer than a few hours. The pork ribs were decent but the brisket was incredibly dry and the smoke ring wasn't very deep or pronounced, and the flavor was lacking. The house sauce is basically a weak, watery teryaki sauce. For the sides, the mac and cheese was seasoned well and had good amounts of cheese but was also a bit grainy. The collared greens were good but nothing to write home about. read more
