Where horses, turkey, pigs, rattlesnakes and who know what else roam freely. It's not an easy island to get to and once you arrive it's not easy staying here either but I absolutely love coming here. There are no grocery stores, gas stations or any restaurants so you have to bring everything and I mean everything with you. Just getting your vehicle here is a hefty price. It's worth every penny.

There is something here for everyone and for people of all abilities. Most of the main part of the island is flat, including from the dock and up to the ruins (it's about 0.4 to half a mile from the dock to the ruins--and there are beach wheelchairs). There's also a main road that traverses the island from one end to the other for about 18 miles that can be traveled by bicycle. There's also an inn and multiple historical structures you can visit. You can also visit a beautiful, mostly empty beach! I got off at the first stop, which is the most challenging stop, meaning I had to climb over sand dunes to get to the beach. It was QUITE the workout and exhausting (I felt it for days after). Someone told me that the second ferry stop is a much easier, more direct path to the beach. This was a wonderful, serene location. I saw several groups of horses along my hike. The greenery is beautiful. I wouldn't mind coming back and setting up camp (permit required) so I can travel the whole island on bike and by foot. Spending more time on the tranquil beach. I wouldn't spend time at the end, as it's 900-1000 dollars or more per night with a two night minimum. If you're looking to visit the island during the day, the RiverView Hotel is RIGHT THERE, essentially directly across from the ferry, and costs about 200 a night for great vintage rooms with comfy beds. Please see my reviews of the ferry and Molly's tours to build a whole itinerary. You'll never see anything else like this, anywhere else in the world probably. It's a fairly cost effective trip, with the ferry costing just over 40 bucks round trip, the inn costing about 200 a night, and the island entry fee being just a few bucks.

The closest to "boating facilities" was a small dock where you could drop a kayak into the black muddy water. The "trail" was a strip of dirt and pine needles that stretched roughly 200 meters along the side of the water until you could no longer walk through the brush. Very disappointed! The two people fishing in the brown water looked miserable.

It is right on Thomas Creek and has a boat dock, fishing pier, covered picnic area, bathroom facilities (though not very clean), water fountains, and hydrants among other amenities. A long, slowdrive to the fort from there- not a walking path, but saw bikers. Once you get to the fort, park. There is a small gift shop & they can answer questions. Kids under 5 are free. We went on Saturday and there was a reactment event! Great way to experience the life at that time and hear the stories and historical information! These people are volunteers and it's their hobby that I appreciated a lot! The beach when you get out of the fort is different kind, no swimming and lots of driftwood and whatnot! The drive there and back is breathtaking following the winding road and looking at the moss covered trees that frame the road! We visit all the forts and historical sites as much as we can and this one is great!

The trails were well marked for the main, side, and exit trails. There was plenty of information at the front about the history and layout of the preserve. It was a mixture of grass, dirt, and gravel, with minimal tree roots. The trails were cleared and mowed. Even though we didn't do the whole trail, there was still plenty of trail to walk. One complaint was even though we applied bug spray, there were a lot of mosquitoes.

Decided to explore Pumpkin Hill and headed to Betz - Preserve. I noticed a kayak launch and took a…read moreright turn to see how serviceable it was. It's really nice! It's an easy, and short, walk to put your kayak in the water and the river looks pretty easy to navigate. I didn't kayak, I just wanted to hangout by the water. There are picnic tables with a nice view of the river and you can also do the hiking trails that are just a few hundred feet further down the road. The kayak launch only has a porta potty but if you drive past the launch there's a full blown bathroom area near the hiking trails. It's a nice area to hangout.

This is a great place to put in your kayak for easy entrance into seven creeks, or take a nice walk along the water. be sure to prepare for ticks and chiggers before entering the park. They are torrential out there.
