These people are volunteers and it's their hobby that I appreciated a lot! The beach when you get out of the fort is different kind, no swimming and lots of driftwood and whatnot! The drive there and back is breathtaking following the winding road and looking at the moss covered trees that frame the road! We visit all the forts and historical sites as much as we can and this one is great!

Deep sea fishing wise, we were flexible on days to go, times to go, and who to go with (just as long as the boat had a bathroom). Fishing-wise: 5 star day (caught over 2 dozen whiteys(?), 2 sea bass, a puffer fish, a sting ray, and few crabs). First mate Sam is an awesome guy--he was baiting the rods, and jumping around like a jack rabbit, especially later when the rain hit at the end of the charter. But the reason for the 1-star review isn't for the fishing, it's for Captain Steve himself [and if I could give him ZERO starts I would]. He feels the need to "school" his customers. I have gone fishing with charters before and we have ALWAYS given the crew shares of our catchings as part of our tip. They have always thanked us in gratitude. I received this e-mail from Captain Steve, an otherwise downer to a fantastic vacation: "In the future should you decide to book a trip anywhere in Florida, I would suggest you make reservations early so you have more choice on day of the week and time frame. Also for future reference (and I tell you this strictly fyi and not with any disrespect), the catch of the day is not considered a good tip. All charter fisherman get all the fish they need or want as most of them enjoy fishing and will fish on their days off if they need fish. It is kind of like giving your uneaten salad to your waitress in place of a tip. We do however appreciate the donations and generally give them to local old folks that can no longer fish for themselves or to non-profits for fund raisers." Ye Olde Pirate Fishing Charters is not the cheapest on the island, nor the most expensive. It cost me $475 for a 4-hour charter [and I hope Sam gets $400 of that since he is such a hard worker]. We tipped Sam $40 plus the crew took home over a dozen fish [we took a few to have for dinner at a local diner]. A tip should be seen as extra, not asked for numerous times. It appears that he is only out for the money. Should we ever find ourselves in this part of the country again, not likely, we will go with someone else. I suggest you do the same.

I was so relieved to find Summer Waves offers a smaller, cleaner, more-personal, less-dangerous water park experience. We found it to be exactly that. Though Jekyll is close to a tropical climate, the water park is only open in warmer months (May-Sept). Inclement weather is an issue in their part of the country at that time of year. At least a month of the time Summer Waves is open is hurricane season. There are clear rain policy rules, which kinda stink but are for everyone's safety. One day we called to verify they were open only to show up TEN MINUTES LATER and be turned away at the gate due to thunderstorms. Luckily we were staying 5min away but can you imagine driving farther? And paying $10 island toll for that? The next day weather was great and my husband and son had a ball. They'd planned to stay 2 hours but lasted 6! My 7yo was a little intimidated by the enclosed taller slides but he got over it after trying them and they covered every attraction in the park except the baby/toddler stuff. They did the lazy river over and over! I saw pictures/reviews of the traffic and chaos in July, wow! Go in late August (when local kids are back to school and the park is only open weekends) and it's perfect! They waited 5min at most, and that happened once. It was just step up and go! It's not huge but it's up-to-date, clean, uncrowded at the right times, and very reasonably priced under $30pp. No bugs (Jekyll has a huge dragonfly population to rid pesty bugs), good breeze on most days. Make sure to reapply sunscreen. My son got burnt for the first time in his life despite full application of spf 25 (which kept him white as a sheet for weeks prior on Jekyll's beaches), but the park uses salt water and is very exposed to the sun so take heed. All in all a great experience!

I drove the big bus for the school for this event today. I didn't take any photos of the park due to the kids; wouldn't be appropriate! The lazy river is short but nice. The season pass options seemed decent. Food inside is rather overpriced and food allergies can't be accommodated. That said, plenty of chair to choose from, if you're willing to cross the lazy river by foot you can set up your things in the middle of the lazy river and enjoy a bit quieter of an area. Nice splash area for kids with a dunking water bucket. Would go again

It's a cute location in a cute area; it had such a fun, authentic vibe outside and in. We came in and wanted to get straight to bowling, and the staff member who set us up was helpful and friendly. The alley area is pretty small, as it's only four lanes. But while I'm sure that could be a disappointment on a crowded night, we found the small size to be conducive to chatting with each other as we played. It's definitely different from standard bowling: you don't wear bowling shoes, the pins are attached to strings that pull them up (as opposed to freestanding pins at a standard alley), and you use smaller, hole-free balls. You also get three throws per frame as opposed to two. I'm not good at bowling, and I'm -- so far -- not good at the duck pin variant. But I didn't find it frustrating, just fun to learn and play! I managed no strikes and a whopping one spare, although I did find the advice posted on the walls helped me get a bit better. I think there is a type of person (someone who takes bowling seriously, or maybe too seriously) who wouldn't enjoy this, but it's really entertaining if you can go in with a good mindset. And not having to find shoes or bowling balls that fit is a huge plus. As far as timing, it took us about an hour and 15 minutes to play two full games; we didn't rush, but we didn't daddle, either. They charge by the hour or half hour, and we paid for our first hour then added a half hour to finish out a second game. A couple who came in about halfway through our visit managed to just squeeze in 10 frames in 30 minutes. We didn't explore the (intriguing) upstairs area, but I did get a fabulous drink -- the Saturn -- at the bar. While I felt like the bowling was a little pricey (not unreasonably priced, to be clear, just something I couldn't afford quite as often), I was surprised at the great value of the drink. Plus, it was delicious -- super well-balanced -- and the bartender was lovely. Even outside of the bowling fun, I could see this being a regular hangout for me if I lived in the area. But even though it's more than an hour from home for me, I'll absolutely take family and friends up to visit when I can. It's an awesome place to have in the region.
