We had the Quail and eggs and pineapple upside down cake. $26. This experience was a little topsy turvey. Because the main course was outstanding but the dessert was not. We both loved the quail. It was not too dry and was very meaty. It was fried and had really great flavor. The home fries tasted a lot like seasoned fries you get at other places. They were cooked just perfectly and were a pleasant surprise. I really enjoyed the pineapple upside down cake but the cherry ice cream (my choice) and the added cherry didn't taste very good. They both tasted like cherry flavored medicine. If you get this - go for vanilla as I'm sure it will be a better pairing. The service was okay but we were given some inaccurate information - perhaps because the waitress was in a rush. My friend and I were driving from MD to NC and looking for a place to pee, but once we entered Horne's we decided we needed to stay awhile! We grabbed a cozy booth by a window. The place was pretty busy. There were lots of hunters in camo. I figured this was a good sign. If they'd been out in the cold since 4 am and were now choosing to refuel at Horne's it must be good! Waitress brought me a big Diet Pepsi which had the right amount of syrup/carbonation. She was also good about refilling my soda and my friend's coffee. We both ordered the mushroom and Swiss omelette with hashbrowns and gobbled it up. Delicious. Love that bottles of hot sauce and ketchup are just on the table, too. My friend mentioned that the mushrooms were canned instead of fresh but I didn't care. It was easy to pay at the cash register. Horne's - The best spot on 301-17!!! - New American Near Me - Port Royal, Virginia

I've eaten at Horne's twice now and both times was very happy with everything. The unique style of the restaurant is a roadside attraction in itself and well worth a day trip (check out the fabulous antique shops in Port Royal while you're there) or a quick stop on your way up and down the road. The gift shop is well stocked, gas is cheap, the staff is friendly, and the atmosphere is vintage and familiar, but the real star is the food. Filling, tasty, and fresh, there isn't much on the menu that doesn't jump out to you and ask you to try it. I haven't tried the breakfast yet, but for lunch or dinner, you can't go wrong. This most recent visit we tried the Cuban sandwich and the Double Whammy burger, both served with some of the best crinkle fries I've ever had. It's hard, in my opinion, to make a good crinkle fry. They're typically either too greasy, too crunchy or too soggy, too salty or unseasoned. Horne's cooks them to perfection - crisp on the outside, soft and warm on the inside, and perfectly salted. The Cuban was thin, but tasted good, with a nice ratio of fillings to bread. The Double Whammy burger is, in fact, a whammy of a meal. The burger is massive, with almost a pound of ground chuck that positively poured juice all over the plate at the first bite. One diner got theirs well done, while I got mine medium, and they were both cooked exact, flavorful and nicely seasoned. I do wish, with the amount of meat on the bun, that they were a little more generous with the lettuce and tomato but it was still absolutely delicious. For the price, which some have said they considered high, you get a massive, flavorful burger. Well worth it. Make sure you try some ice cream - they serve both Hershey's regular ice cream and soft serve custard in a variety of cones or in a cup, as well as sundaes, floats, and hand-mixed shakes. On your way out, do not pass up on the cake/pie case. Their cakes are some of the best I've had. Impossibly thick and weighty slices of strawberry and cream cheese, lemon and blueberry, carrot, red velvet and other rotating flavors - all fresh and delicious. They are well worth grabbing before you head to the register to stash in the fridge once you get home for a late night dessert. One slice is probably enough for two people to share! All in all, Horne's is a fantastic roadside diner, brimming with nostalgia and old fashioned service. All I Can Say Is... Skip the Fried Food! I tried the fried chicken sandwich, and it tasted like it had absorbed every flavor from the fryer's past month of use. Not exactly what I was hoping for! That said, the cheesesteak sandwich was fabulous--flavorful and well-made. Parking was scarce, and the long wait times had some visitors leaving just as we arrived. We ordered takeout, which saved us hassle. Horne's has a fabulous history, as it started as one store, grew into a chain, only to come full circle and there is only one left. There's something nostalgic about Hornes, even if the food didn't quite live up to expectations this time. Horne's Restaurant in Port Royal, VA, has been a roadside attraction on my way to family in Newport News for the more than 30 years I have taken that route. I have stopped there occasionally for a pit stop, but this was the first time I actually sat down in their luncheonette style dining room for a meal. Attractive in a 1960's way, with counter service and booths all around, the joint is nicely dated and feels like a living antique. Their menu is substantial, so we ordered coffee before breakfast and took time to peruse the long list of morning possibilities. We ended up with a standard egg, home fries, grits and chicken fried steak request. While everything was good, nothing was outstanding, and the deep fried breaded minute steak arrived too dark brown and past its eat by moment. All consumable, but less than it could have been. Still, atmosphere accounts for something, so Horne's supports its fourth star due to the near museum quality of the overall operation. Service was decent, but on this busy Friday morning, they seemed short a pair of hands both in the kitchen and on the floor. read more

The food was average! We ordered an omellete and country fried steak breakfast meal. Only waited for about 10-15 minutes which we were quite surprise. The omellete was again average and the country fried steak seem like an old fried steak at which fried again or maybe microwaved. However, the fries were good and coffee was hot. Also, the service was excellent, hence the 3 star rating. We pass this place all the time we travel home so figure we try it atleast once. This diner, road stop, souvenir shop location has been around since 1960 according to their website. Bob Horne's opened his first store in 1948. It has been a place known as a family favorite, providing meals, fuel, great service and gifts for customers who come to visit. It is commonly a usual stop for normal commuters to visit Port Royal, VA along the way to MD or down VA. It's like going into a blast to the past visiting Horne's. From Simply Southern souvenirs, to candied ants and sour cream crickets. There is knives and Virginia goodies like Ass Kicking hot sauce, Pennsylvania Dutch Candies, The restroom break brought us to Horne's but what we came and left happy we had decided to eat here. My family of 7 came and experienced sitting in the bar stool seats at their ice cream bar together. We were happy to have front row, watching our server prepare our shakes and ice cream desserts . He placed our orders in a reasonable time and made sure we were his priority. Our service was superb and we got our food and good time. I had to have the old fashion root beer float with my chicken meal, which came with two sides. The homemade southern fried chicken tenders was excellent. The batter was light, airy, crispy and blew my expectation. The side of sweet potato fries had the most perfect crisp and no soggy fries. I loved it, along with the cole slaw. The beef liver and onion had the most amazing gravy that made the dish a winner that we all tasted and shared. My kids murdered their burger and one of the customers I sat beside told me his family has visited Horne's for generations to get the burgers here. I have to try their four piece chicken when I return. It would've been a 30 min wait because they them fresh.. and it is a classic go to choice for many. The hot apple dumpling was good but needed to get reheated because we thought it wasn't hot enough. But they did well with meeting our needs and ensuring to satisfy our requests. My mom ate it with her black cherry ice cream. Ultimately, I was pleasantly happy we had gained an experience at Horne's. I hope this original Horne's will continue to stand for more years to come. read more

In all these years, I have never stopped to eat here...hmmm. This place has been up since I was young and I know even longer than that! Each time to see my lovely grandmother we use to make a pit stop here and I use to love walking in and seeing "things" (as you call it when your young or toys lol)...but they were actually gift shop items or just trickets. They have stuff from joking items to nice wind chimes. There's something for everyone here. One thing I will never forget is being always timid to go to their restroom. There were times it was perfect and then time's, the water had over flowed and wasn't clean...or a toilet wouldn't work...or just simply people didn't flush and it probably just needed someone to come in and clean it. So the bathrooms can be a bit off putting at times. The coolest memory for me other than looking at the way it was built is the gas pumps out back for trailers. I use to love watching the trucks pull up and fill up. Not too sure what was the allure but I do have a memory of it making me smile. It's the small things folks!! As I stated in the beginning I have never stopped to eat here, out of the hundred on times we have stopped in. Now that I don't eat meat, only seafood I would have to see how they could accommodate that but hey apparently they do offer 24/7 breakfast so that could be it. No worries about parking, there is plenty! All in all, it's such a great memory for me so I love to make a pit stop here to get a stretch in, potty break, bite to eat or just to take in the old school vibes! Of course I will be back! The first time we stopped here, it was because of the funny name. But, they actually have very good food. If you are a fan of liver, their liver and onion is excellent. We always order it when we drive through the area. Their desserts are also very good, especially the donut supreme. From what we've experienced it is busy all afternoon. Horne's Restaurant and Gift Shop is family-owned country Store business that has been in this location since the early 1950's. I can still remember the many times going to my first Horne's many years ago as a kid. It was a must-do stop for our family on our way to Myrtle Beach every summer. To my knowledge and what was told to me by one of the Horne's employees at this location....This Horne's is the last of the original Horne's anywhere in the country!! This is remarkable and interesting piece of food culture and history being that I remember they used to be everywhere down south....similar to today's old school spots like Shoney's or Picadilly's! It still has the classic gift shop/restaurant/gas station combination. Some locations used to also have a hotel attached to it. This one did at one time long ago, but now it's just an empty parking lot. The gift shop carries many country store-local grocery finds, whimsical gifts, snacks and cool novelty take home items that are sure to bring a laugh to co-workers, friends, and family. The restaurant has an old-school feel, with a diner counter and multiple booths. Breakfast is served all day!...My favorite meal of the day and I can eat it 24/7. I had the pancakes breakfast my last visit and they were really good. Classic eats like meatloaf, spaghetti, blue plate specials, burgers, fries, homemade ice cream and all things comfort food served here are good too. But....By far, you gotta try their Fried Chicken and Chocolate Malts....It's seasoned to the bone and finger lickin' good!!!! Oh! Let's not for get the seasoned pork rinds and fat-back strips! WHAT!!?? YES LAWWAAD!! I shedded a tear as soon as I saw the multitude of bags on display for sale. Of course, I grab a couple to go. No plate, napkins needed...just hot sauce! LOL!! In all...OMG.....Yes!!..and another YES!!
