Great stop when heading down US 301 ands turning down US 17. Bathrooms have always been a little dicey...but when ya gotta go...you gotta go. The food can be pretty good but it has been a while. We have been hitting a lot of other food stops on our travels up and down 17 and 301 recently but Horne's is dependable for one item: THE MILK SHAKE. More often than not, we stop in to get chocolate milk shakes to go...and that is our lunch. It consist of milk, three scoops of chocolate ice cream and three squirts of chocolate syrup. Thick and rich and good to the last slurp. The shake is always great; however, this time getting the server to "serve," was a hassle. If you want to look at filth while checking out this is the place for you. They have adult items right beside the checkout counter. It's disgusting. When I asked the manager why they had that kind of items beside the checkout where young children could see it she said, "well, they don't have to look at it". You do have to look at it because it's exactly where you check out. I will never go here again. I've been going here for 20 years. The new owners have definately changed from Family Friendly to adult disgusting items. So sad. Parent's be warned - NOT KID FRIENDLY. Being from RVA, I don't think there has ever been a time that we've driven up Rt. 301 to the Northern Neck and neglected to stop at Horne's!! It's a family tradition to go into this souvenir Mecca and grab a trinket or two! There are, of course, lots of nautical gifts and jewels and even mermaid decor! They stock cards, flags, incense, toys, clothes, sports team items, sunglasses and oodles more! Seeking a personalized gift? There are tons are choices with popular names of them... my kids never find their names... they are "unique and euphonious" (nod to I Love Lucy). But we still love grabbing a snack, or even getting an ice cream! The retro diner is reminiscent of a slower, more innocent time... maybe that's why we love it... the nostalgia... I ordered steak and eggs and it was so good! service was on top of the game even though the place was packed and revolving with customers . management was great and kept the service rolling smooth. This is a hometown truck stop. It's diner food at its most basic. There is literally only one other restaurant within miles of this place, and that's seafood, so no real competition to motivate excellence. It's a gas station, gift shop, ice cream stand, and lunch counter. The staff are pretty friendly overall, it's acceptably clean, and you get plenty of decent food on your plate. read more

I'm always onboard to check out a gas station hamburger/ice cream joint, and Horne's exceeded my expectations! We drive down Hwy 17 all the time, and every time we pass by Horne's Restaurant, we always wondered if it was the oasis it appeared to be. I grew up eating truck stop food and have developed an affinity for any restaurant that caters to travelers, while taking good care of their locals. Well, I only had to park and enter Horne's to see that it would meet all my expectations--and shatter them! My family ordered the following: hamburger, cheeseburger, ham and cheese, and two milkshakes. The hamburgers were solid! Cooked perfectly, carefully seasoned, and assembled with the standard fair you would expect. They might sound ordinary, but they were exceptional! Anyone can throw together the key ingredients and call it a burger, but Horne's has clearly identified what makes theirs a superior product. And their fries? They were perfectly cooked and nice and salty. A real treat! The ham and cheese? Well, my son actually used these words, "my sandwich has too much meat on it". And it was a big sandwich, no doubt! It was more than he could eat, and he's a teenager. So, that should tell you everything you need to know. He almost made himself sick eating so much, and then following it with a shake. The milkshakes were made from Hershey's ice-cream, so they were top-notch from the first scoop. Delicious to the last slurp on the straw. After we ate, we wandered around the small gift shop and I felt a bit reminiscent for my youth, from the days when I was a wide-eyed kid wandering through a tourist gift shop with a five dollar bill, eager to spend it on a souvenir of some kind. On a whim we decided to stop and boy were we happy with our decision. Let me begin with I doubt the place has been updated since the late 70's but don't let the exterior deter you from stopping. The service is beyond excellent and the decor is exactly what you expect of a counter diner. The menu is a little overwhelming but offers something for everyone, even healthy options. The kiddos wanted burgers and fries and why not right?!? I opted for a mushroom, fried onion Swiss burger and my husband ordered Southern fried chicken sandwich. Let's start with the kiddos, we'll proportioned, not overcooked and we'll flavored. My burger was cooked medium, wished for a little more pink but at least it wasn't well done. I've been eating at this location for at least 30 years and always liked the service and food until last weekend when my wife ordered the same meal she always gets. When her order came out we questioned the amount of corned beef hash on her plate and was told that it's always the same, and is weighed prior to cooking. I Call B.S. because it has always been "twice" as much. Then the girl told me she had been there for 20 years. She must have started at 10 years old! My husband h/b wanting to visit Hornes for sometime now. We stopped otw to the beach. My honey loved his triple decker club w/homemade chips. My fries were great. The atmosphere was very inviting & warm. Loved the old school feel. They even made me a fish sandwhich that was not even part of the menu. That fish sandwhich looked amazing. However, I thought it was flounder not cat fish. Not their fault. So, on the way back from the same trip stopped again. Honey got a only mayo bacon cheeseburger & mine all the way well w/ fries. A FREAKING AMAZING! Honey completed his whole meal. Fast; friendly & soooo yummy! We live 60 miles/straight shot. I have loved this place for years. The nostalgia, family atmosphere, and customer service were wonderful. Now, there are entrees on the menu with vulgar nanes and items with raunchy 'humor' for sale at the register. The prices have soared, and the customer service is questionable. I hope someone takes notice and cares enough to restore it to it's former glory. read more

We didn't eat at the restaurant, we just came in for gas, and to use the facilities. This is your typical local gas station. Very cluttered and not a lot of floorspace to walk around and browse. Fried Chicken & the mushroom swiss burger were good. Negative star for canned mushrooms. The chicken strips had way too much breading IMHO, negative star. Why two stars? We spotted a roach on the floor. The gift shop area and outside the front door reeked of feces. The toilet was clean thank goodness, but the floors were wet, almost like there was a leak; And a fan was blowing as if to dissipate the stench? Nice little diner inside of a gas station and convenience store. They have a nice large counter in the center for the diner and boosts surrounding it. The pancakes were really delicious and the syrup was good too. The sausage appeared to be hand-pattied in fresh. It was definitely not a premade Patty. It was delicious. This place is very near the river and definitely worth a stop in. If I ever come back I'm going to try one of the milkshakes as they look delicious but this time I was in for breakfast. We stopped to Hornes on our way back to New York. I wasn't excited when we first walked in. We sat at the bar and waited for almost ten minutes before someone came to take our order. I ordered Hornes triple Decker club. Comes with ham bacon, cheese, lettuce and tomato. It was absolutely delicious! At first I was surprised because it was cold! I thought it's gonna be hot. But after couple of bites it didn't matter any more! There is a picture under ( just noticed autocorrect from Hornes to Horses ). My husband ordered cheeseburger and he was happy with it.
