Horseman's Haven is iconic Santa Fe, even though some of us still think of this as the "new location." It's worth a visit. The food is always good (although not my favorite chile on earth) and always piquant (don't mess with the Level II stuff unless you're hardcore), and it comes out fast. Service is solid, attentive and pleasant. The restaurant itself never feels pleasant and cozy to me, there are sometimes derelicts in the parking lot (one followed me in yesterday and proceeded to tweak his way begging around the room before a waitress ejected him - drugs are bad, kids) and the bathrooms are always borderline, but there's plenty of seating and I always come away from my visits with a good feeling. Prices have gone up, but you get a lot of food for your money. Think twice about ordering a side dish; you probably won't need it. The coffee is remarkably good for a diner of this sort.

We stumbled upon this spot next to a gas station. It was on No Reservations but it was a little out of town so we weren't sure we would make it. Stopping for gas made it destiny:) The service was great and the food was delicious! The green chili was hot and tasty! So glad we made it to visit!

Food was good. I had the handheld burrito. Problem it was so stuffed you couldn't close it like a burrito. I suggest a lot less potatoes. The other plate had a lot of potatoes too. As for service, please pay attention to your customers. Come back and check on them see how they are doing a bit after you bring the food. Visiting Santa Fe, have a bite here.

Ah what a taste. But as a critic I want to talk about the positives and negatives. We had two dishes and both definitely delicious, especially the green chili sauce. They provide enough food to take home for the average person and that makes it worth the price. But I had to go up and ask for silverware, never got water cups and realized later that we had to pay in the front. This could have been fixed from the waiters/ workers coming to us at any time instead of talking, and a simple sign at the start that told you where to pay if they didn't tell us. I was just passing by and I don't think I'll go back, but the food was great, don't get me wrong there.

Unfortunately I was highly disappointed by food and service. I ordered fish and shrimp taco. The food wasn't bad but it's didn't come with a side of salsa or any sort of sauce. It did comes with a side of rice which I felt was under seasoned. The service was slow. I walked in around 1pm and door was locked. I was surprised to find them close even though online says that they are open at 11am that day. I checked on google and it was suppose to be open. I called and they said that they are open but waiting for alcohol to be delivered at 3pm. Did they assume that every customer coming in is ordering alcohol? As far as I understand this is a restaurant that serves food and alcohol and not a bar. Shortly after my arrival, there was a large tour with 12 people showed up. I could see that the waiter was a bit flustered because he also had to tend to other customer as well as the tour. I guess this is where the tour take people for authentic taco experience. In my opinion these are more toned down gringo tacos. My taco didn't come with a side of sauce like everyone else. I also noticed that the tour all received a side of salsa which I didn't. I'm not sure if the waiter forgot. I had to flag down the waiter a few time because he also forgot my drink. I also ordered an agua Fresca watermelon and it wasn't made of real watermelon but flavor syrup from the bar. I wished I had known that it wasn't real melon. 2.5 stars for the food and 2 for service. Again food wasn't terrible, but certainly wasn't close to be the best.

tldr: THE SOUP This…read moreis a place where a tasting menu would be amazing because I'm sure everything is that good. Before they even bring the menu they bring out 7 moles to taste. Apparently moles aren't all dark chocolate spicy sauces ... ?!?? Loved the education and samples. I'm typically not a mole fan, but they were fun to try. We had the octopus but to me the sauce was too oily. The actual octopus was tender and delicious. Also had the duck skin tacos which were more of a minced duck meat taco and delish. The 5 stars go for impeccable service and the SOUP. This soup is not to be missed. Nothing on paper makes me think it should work but it totally does. It's a big lump of blue crap topped with creamy poblano pepper soup with whipped cream and amaretto and then topped with a spicy kick. Someone said cinnamon but for me it tasted more like hot red chili powder. Sounds incredibly weird but it was the best dish I've had in forever. We were seated immediately but waited about ten minutes before anyone greeted us. When our server finally arrived, he wished us a happy anniversary--even though it wasn't our anniversary. While not a major issue, it's the kind of detail a restaurant at this price point should get right. After ordering drinks, water, and our meals, we were told everything was available except the duck. My wife ordered the sopa de amora and the halibut special. I ordered the frijole negro and attempted to order the Popocatépetl, only to be told it was unavailable that evening. Instead, I was offered a $90 Wagyu steak. For a restaurant of this caliber, the menu should be updated or guests should be informed of major changes upfront. It felt like a bait-and-switch. Our drinks arrived, but after finishing our water, we were told more would be brought out. It never arrived until dessert, when I had to ask again. The frijole negro was excellent--the best dish of the night. Unfortunately, my wife's soup was disappointing. We were told it had to be eaten from top to bottom or bottom to top for the flavors to work properly, and this explanation was delivered in a somewhat condescending manner. Despite being described as "the best soup in the state," the flavors simply felt off. For the entrées, my steak was good, but the rice was overcooked and mushy. My wife's halibut was completely under-seasoned, and her rice was equally inedible. Dessert was better. The crepes were enjoyable, though the walnuts were noticeably burnt. I don't usually nitpick, but when a restaurant charges premium prices, the food and service should justify the cost. Unfortunately, both were mediocre, and the overall experience fell far short of expectations.
