I have been taking my cars to Ho's automotive for over ten years. He is consistently well priced, does great work, and doesn't try and overcharge for work. One example: my van was having some finicky door issues and the dealership said I should pay $1500 to fix something electronic on it. I took it to him and he was very confident that a light was getting switched on and I should not try and do any expensive repairs and watch that my kids weren't turning on their overhead lights. This ended up being the case (so user error but he didn't try and do an unnecessary "repair". He also then replaced my brake pads for half the price the dealership quoted. Sometime you need to try them out several times before you find one that 'fits like a glove', and I thought this shop did. Until I went for my 2nd oil change (only reason why I went). I went back the same week to complain why a certain light was giving me a warning signal, he suggested I get my 60,000 maintenance on my car since it is getting close, and it wasn't even TIME. The light didn't went off, so I know something he did caused the light to come on. That same week, I also got a recall on my car, (symptoms are the same as why I went back to complain to him after he did an oil change) and if I took it back to the dealer they will fix it for free. Honesty, is the best policy! Either that, or they're just pretending they know about why the light on my car was giving me a 'warning' signal. But trying to trust them, and paying for maintenance my car didn't need - yet - is not being truthful to the customer. How can I trust them and go back after that? read more

There was something wrong with my car's brakes, and I took it to Ho's on the recommendation of a friend. At about 10am I dropped off my car, they seemed very busy and hurried me out the door quickly after taking some preliminary information. They said they would call me in the afternoon for more details, and to confirm what work I wanted done. I waited all afternoon wondering when they would call. Finally, at 5pm they called and told me "we finished the work on your car, please come pick it up, we close at 5:30." I had not authorized any work, nor discussed charges. I was also a 45 minute walk away. They had an employee stay late so I could pick up my car, who acted very annoyed at having to wait. They agreed to charge me for parts only, not labor, since they didn't have permission to do the work, but it still cost me $450 I couldn't afford. I had to take out a short-term loan to cover the cost. This would have been poor enough service to earn a bad review. 16 months later, my car began having brake problems again. I took it in to a legitimate brakes shop. HO'S HAD INSTALLED THE PARTS SO POORLY THAT THEY LASTED LESS THAN HALF THEIR DESIGNED LIFESPAN. Everything they had touched needed to be replaced. Sloppy. They might save you some money in the short term by cutting corners, but in the long term you will just have to pay someone else to clean up their mistakes. read more

This was my first time at Ho's automotive. My car was not starting and I called around to get quotes to get my starter replaced, and selected Ho's because they quoted me $600 in parts and labor. I got it towed there and they fixed it the same day, which was great. However when I picked it up, I was charged $100 more than I was quoted prior, so my total was $700 (more expensive than all the other places I had called). They didn't call me to check in and ask if that was ok to charge more than my quote or let me know it would be more expensive. Beware. I will not be going back. read more

Critical: Professionalism, Quality Check engine light was coming on, took it to Ho's because he came recommended by friends. They were 30 mins late to open, I was told by an employee I would get a ride home, which was not true. Ho reprimanded the employee in front of me and did not give me a ride. Weeks later my check engine light goes on again. I take it to another mechanic, who tells me the last person who worked on the care left some rubber in the engine, which melted and that had damaged the the vehicle. read more

In my continuing search to find "my mechanic" I think I may have finally found a place worthy of my repeat business! After chatting with some neighbors and giving them the Cliff's Notes version of my recent auto mechanic experiences, they told me that they took all their vehicles to Ho's Automotive, so I decided to give it a shot. The bonus being I live just blocks away, so no need to schedule drop-offs/pick-ups, I can walk there! So, after being quite dissatisfied with this place (http://www.yelp.com/biz/hookset-automotive-portland#hrid:Xc1XWmOHwxLtGhnAJZs3-A), and slightly less dissatisfied with this one (http://www.yelp.com/biz/everist-bros-portland#hrid:9Ya5KSHAcvudvS8XeN8c4g) I ended up taking my "Family Truckster w/ Rally Fun Pack" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wagon_Queen_Family_Truckster) over to Ho's Automotive with the following issues: (1) "Service Engine Soon" light illuminated; (2) non functioning windshield wiper, and (3) vandalized driver side doorlock. They took care of #3 lickety-split and charged me roughly $280 LESS than the quote I got from the dealer (who said he'd have to re-key both locks and the ignition). Issue #2 was another relatively easy fix - at first he thought the motor may have been burned out, but discovered a fault in the wiring harness, and repairing that cost me about $114 less than he initially quoted. The saga of the "Service Engine Soon" light is recounted elsewhere, but suffice it to say that another shop cut some corners by installing JUST the Camshaft sensor, rather than the sensor AND Synchronizer - which I'm told is typically sold with the sensor. Ho's also discovered a bad O2 sensor, and replaced that for right around $100 (part & labor). This is all background though, as the real story is Mr. Hung Ho himself. I really felt comfortable with him, and believe him to be an honest and upfront mechanic - an entity that, like the Coelacanth, was believed to be extinct! He explained each item and it's cost, actually called me back to let me know when diagnoses or work were complete, or updates were revised. He understood that cost is of the essence for me; I want to extend the life of my ride in the most efficient way possible, and will not hesitate to stick a fork in this baby should repairs or maintenance become too costly. At this point I think there are really only 2 things you should know before giving Ho's Automotive a try should you be in the market for a new mechanic. 1st: Mr. Ho does have something of an accent that I had some trouble with on the phone, but in person it was not an issue at all. 2nd: They didn't give me any formal printed out invoice, but rather just a handwritten receipt with notes listing the work performed including the charge for each item. That's fine for me, but if you're maintaining service records to help with the resale value on your car this probably would be less than ideal. I'll definitely return to Ho's Automotive, and hope that over time I'll stay as pleased as I was on my initial visit! read more

My 2002 Subaru has been having problems since I got it, 9 years ago. I was always taught to take Subaru's to specific dealership shops, but I always find them to be way too expensive and end up back there in 6 months. My car had been making a weird noise and a friend said they only let Hung work on their van, and swear by his work. 100% BEST CHOICE I COULD HAVE MADE. I had the check engine light as well as the traction control light constantly on.. he narrowed it down to the number two fuel injector. After two days of tearing it apart.. This is the guy you've been looking for. Hung is smart, honest and truly good at what he does. I found him through a recommendation and I can whole heartedly recommend him to you. He will never tell you to do something that doesn't need to be done. He will be WAY more affordable than any dealership and a lot of other auto shops. I moved away from Portland two years ago but my daughter and her car stayed behind. He has always got us in even when we had a tight schedule. When other mechanics have told me I needed to do things, I called and checked with Hung and he told me not to bother on such an old vehicle. Today I called to tell him that I was suddenly having a problem with something that I had had him work on before. Long story short, a year ago some crackhead tried stealing my Mazda b2000, leaving the electrical all around the steering column completely torn apart and in disarray. Ho's was right down the street, a friend had recommended him, and so i talked to him about it. Ho was very friendly and replaced the whole steering column/fixed the electrical even better than new! I was referred to Ho's Automotive by a good friend that took her jeep to him after getting a $900 estimate. Ho told them they didn't need all of that work done as it wasn't the problem and fixed the jeep for less than $200. I took a car in to get a health check as I was considering purchasing it for $1,100. Ho not only fixed what needed to be done (brakes) but gave me sound advice as how much I should pay for the car...$500, and what I should expect out of the old gem. Seller agreed and I now have a solid car for my son. Ho and the front desk person were a pleasure to deal with. Seriously, I will never take my vehicles any where else. read more

Stay away from this shop. After my Toyota Corolla was totaled Hung the owner persuaded me to let him do the body work and put it back together. He gave me an estimate via photos and as insurance told me if the work exceeded the estimate he would buy the car off me for what i paid salvage. Two days after getting the car back from Ho's it broke down in the middle of no where because they did a quick fix to the radiator that was damaged in the accident rather than replace it. The repair cost me $600. I noticed a number of problems with the body work as well and after getting back to Portland I went to get a second opinion. Long story short after getting that second opinion from one of the most reputable auto body shops in Portland I was informed that Ho's Automotive had not realigned my frame (despite being charged for it on the invoice) and had done sketchy welding on key structural parts of the car. The final conclusion was that according to basic industry standards Ho's Auto had put me back on the road in an unsafe car, not to mention not fixing the radiator. I am now stuck selling the car to a wrecking yard for $1900 after having paid salvage $2200, paid $3800 for them to repair and then dumping another $600 on the radiator. Long story short Hung saw easy money, got in over head with respect to his abilities with body work, put me on the road in an unsafe vehicle and then didn't honor his agreement. If you want a honest car repair, go to Ho's Automotive Inc. I spent thousands of $ on my Volvo and the check engine light kept coming back. He repaired a oil lick that a specialized Volvo place repaired 3 times with no success. He was very persistent when the check engine light kept coming back, and made me pass Deq. Most of Volvo places would not even repair a Volvo made in 2001. This guy doesn't just rely on computer testing as other repair shops, he actually test drives the car and makes sure that it works when he fixes it. He makes a point of actually repairing your car, unlike most of places. read more

Whoa, I just read the two poor reviews of Ho's Automotive and that hasn't been my experience at all. I've been using him for years and have referred my friends and family to him with no regrets. None. I've never seen him push a service or repair that he didn't think was needed and his prices have always been more than fair. My 2000 Toyota needed a large amount of work, so I brought it to Ho's, having used their service once in the distant past. The woman who answered the phone was friendly and accommodating. I use my car at work, so I needed the repairs done as quickly as possible. Hung Ho met with me and discussed the project, laying out the different possible scenarios and costs associated. He was open and transparent through the whole process, showing me the different parts and explaining what they do, how they were broken, and the effect that had on my car. There were some additional problems that I was unaware of, pushing back the finish date we had discussed, but Hung gave me a loaner car so that I could get to work, and the additional repairs were done by the very next day. Facing the number of repairs on my car, I had debated whether I should put that money into a new (used) car, but I'm glad I didn't. My Toyota drives like a completely different car, and I have no doubt that it will be around for many more years of use. I will be going back to Ho's for my future car needs, and you should too! read more

I took my car here to have it looked at because there was a slight hesitation when starting and didn't want to get stuck needing a jump. He suggested to change my spark plugs. This takes about half hour, but he charged me $140 to do it. I also asked him to put in a new cabin air filter which I already purchased and had in my car. I watched multiple YouTube videos how to do it and know that it only takes 5 minutes. He tried to charge me $45 for that and explained how difficult & time consuming it was not knowing that I knew how to do it. He definitely tried to take advantage of me being a female & coming in alone. They may do good work, but they are crooks. read more

Found shop by mistake - had overheated engine so pulled in there just as shop was closing. They looked at it and said to leave and they would check it out the next day. He did a great job and I have been back several times for other car issues and oil change. Also entire family goes there and we have to drive 20 miles to get there. Mr. Ho has always been straightforward in his explanations and pricing. If it is a part you need you have the choice of new or used and he gives you the price so you know what you are spending. He has worked on my Nissan, daughters Yukon and Ford and my friends Toyota. Always doing a great job. I would highly recommend and I do!!! read more

I first got introduced to this shop when my car was hit by a lift/transport company. That company tried hard to have my car work at this shop since they are partnered with them, and it wouldn't cost them so much. I obliged since I just want to get my car fixed. Ho's did an excellent job with the body damage, although not pristine as it originally was. Sensing that they do a good enough job, I scheduled to have them fix my "check engine light" on and was having issues with the ignition coil (i had taken the car to 2 other previous auto shops). Ho said that he can replaced 1 coil (the other shops recommend that I replaced all 6 at the same time so I wouldn't have anymore issues). The fact that Ho said he can fix my car because of faulty 1 coil should had sent me a red flag right away. So I went ahead and had him replace it. I trusted him. Sure it enough after I got it back that had been fixed, two weeks later something else happened in my car. I took it back to be fixed and was given another excuse. Before I left his shop, I noticed that my trunk wasn't closing right and my auto driver's side window wasn't functioning properly. I had a bad feeling about this. He gave me some BS excuse that my car is old and getting worn and some parts needs to be replaced. I should had listened to my gut and thought that he sabotaged other parts to have me keep going back there for repairs that should had never happen. Luckily for me I had just reconnected with an old high school friend who works on his car because he didn't trust ANY auto mechanics. He told me to buy the parts OEM coils, all 6 of them and new plugs. He showed me how to replace them and we found out that some of the new plugs that I had another auto shop previous to Ho's installed were old and damaged and half was new, meaning they were replaced at Ho's purposely. I will never trust these guys if my life depended on it. They are good in the beginning to give you a good impression but its all crap from there on. I would give Hung four stars on his work cus most of the time he will fix the car right and his shop is in pretty good condition. Don't agree with his prices most of the time but what can i do about it. Every time I came for oil change it's different even though it can be as soon as three weeks apart. Hate his front desk lady, she always gives me that unwelcome look and she will never say hi. the first things she will say as soon as i open the door would be, what do you need or hung not here come back and just very crappy service, this happend so many times and finally i decided to find another mechanic. She needs to learn few things about how to treat her customers and be friendlier cuz that's where business starts. And the same thing goes for the guy with long hair. He will never talk to me just walk around me when he works on my car, never smiles, and even when I ask questions he pretends like he didn't hear me. He just seems like he doesn't like his job and if he truly doesn't than he shouldn't be working there. I decided to go to other mechanics including a good one by the same shop name on 33rd and division his shop is called Ho's Automotive as well but this guy's been around for very long time. He has good prices and excellent work. Feel bad for Hung Ho for not going there anymore but I just can't stand seeing unfriendly and stuck up receptionist and his mechanic. read more
