I took my 2007 Toyota RAV4 in for diagnosis because it had a cylinder 4 misfire. I was charged $156.00 for scanning the check engine light. I was also charged $143.56 for spark plugs, even though the same set can be purchased on Amazon for about $100. In addition, I paid $124.80 for labor to remove and replace the plugs. Overall, I feel their prices are quite high. Although this was my first experience with them, I will say that their technician seemed very genuine and clearly knowledgeable about his work, but the service is definitely expensive. read more

John, the owner, has gone "Above and Beyond" everytime that I have needed a vehicle evaluated and/or repaired. When the key icon stayed lit on my wife's 2016 Honda HR-V, she took it to PDX Automotive, our "regular" mechanic. By regular, I mean the mechanic within walking distance of our home, but we've only needed services about a half dozen times in the last ten years. The short story is this: every step of the way PDX attempted to help us find the easiest solution that would save us time & money. Sometimes when you are dealing with experts (auto experts, computer experts, language experts, management experts) they will sometimes talk down to you and tell you what to do instead of telling you what you need to know. PDX was just the opposite - listening to our concerns and suggestions then answering our questions and working with us. Here's the fuller story: John said he could run a diagnostics on the starter mechanism, but maybe we would prefer to just change the batteries in the key fob to see if that really inexpensive option worked. He didn't try to sell us on any services we might not need. Try this free option first was his recommendation. But after replacing the batteries in both fobs, the key icon remained lit after starting the car. A relative of mine had to have her starter button in her Honda replaced last year so I asked John to order a new starter. Within a few days the key icon no longer stayed lit. John still thought I should bring it in for a diagnostic, but he agreed to cancel the order for the starter. I offered to pay a restocking fee or a fee for the fooling around with this, but John said that wasn't necessary. Three days later the Honda wouldn't start. The tow truck guy came out and gave me a jump and this time the car started right up and the icon didn't stay lit. But I'd had enough so I drove the car to PDX Automotive. In less than two days PDX had replaced the now dead battery and the starter (John's diagnostics confirmed it was broken). Good work PDX Automotive team. read more

Normally I wrench my own cars, but when presented with a job too big for my garage, I gave these guys a try years after being recommended them by a pro fabricator. The last mechanic I tried had a problem with going on tangents; and every quote was an even $150. It took three calls just to deal with the issue I brought the car in for, and by then he only finished a driver side strut re-assembly. Too much talking, not enough fixing! Now I have seen some horrors after doing post mechanic tear downs; used parts, reused bolts that shop manuals say to replace and even parts retrofitted from other vehicles. Historically, mechanics have accomplished all too amazing things on my rides. So my attitude has been for a decade or so that I could always do better. Well these guys gave me back some mechanic faith. When I arrived at 8am the manager was giving the person on the phone all his consideration while a waited, the first positive sign. Then when he was done we discussed my concerns, he was open to using the parts I had bought for cheap (many shops play numbers with parts and time), and he even talked me out of some extra work that didn't make sense for a 100k+ car, a second positive sign. The work was as estimated, honest, and they used higher grade bolts than spec; Just how I would have done it. I like these guys and will be back when necessary. read more

Very happy with the service at PDX Automotive and super happy they're in my n'hood. Just had bad spark plugs replaced, cap and roter, throttle cable, etc. Basically a good tune up. They kept me informed of the timeline, were always available when i called for an update, and came in $100 under estimate. They also took the time to explain the possible causes of an oil leak that's been plaguing my car for years. Most places have told me 'well it's just the oil pan gasket' but PDX Automotive got geekier - they said it could be this, it could be that, yes there's oil on the exterior of the oil pan but it could be this also. I really appreciate a more complete explanation. A few years ago, I stopped in with a friend who's rear window was stuck on her Subaru. The mechanic, although busy, took 10 minutes and got the window unstuck, and wouldn't accept any payment. My friend took her car back for service later and was really happy with them - even tho she lived across town! read more

Things at which PDX Automotive is really good: Very professional, estimates are accurate, quality of mechanics, doing what they say they will do (but nothing more...see below). I did generally trust them as mechanics. Things as which PDX Automotive is really bad: Informing people of potential maintenance issues. On multiple occasions I had my truck into the shop for repairs and was not informed of other issues in the same area that might need work. Example: Water pump replaced, and 2 days later the timing belt broke. Paid twice for them to take the front off of my engine. They should have let me know it was time to service the timing belt when they replaced the water pump. I've found out from multiple other mechanics this would have been a standard courtesy. Also, they ALWAYS charge at least a $90 diagnostic fee, even if you walk in knowing exactly what the problem is. Expect to pay a lot for the work that is done, although I will admit it is usually done well. Generally speaking, they seem pretty honest, but they do absolutely nothing more than the bare minimum to get your vehicle up and running again. If you want a mechanic that will not only fix your car right (which they do) but will also help you prevent further issues with your car (which they don't), look elsewhere. read more

We were so stoked to have a coupon for PDX Automotive from the Chinook Book for $50 off an oil change and tire rotation! We were worried that their hours were so limited (their coupon clearly states their hours are Mon-Fri 7:30am - 6pm) but we felt confident about their "Early Bird/Night Owl service available" comment on the back of the coupon. We were very excited to try them out! Unfortunately, when I called to check on available appointments (not that you need an appointment at any other mechanic shops), I was told they never do work on cars after 5pm, as all their mechanics go home. And the "night owl" service is only to drop off your vehicle, not to actually get any work done on it. You can only get work done on your car on weekday mornings. What a load of lies and false advertising! How does PDX Automotive expect anyone with normal job hours (Mon-Fri, 9-5) get their car repaired? Seriously, you guys. Honor your word, be honest on your coupon, and expand your hours. So irritated and disappointed. read more

Took my 94 Cherokee here twice. Once was to get the radiator replaced. A few days later automatic transmission started having trouble. I opened up the hood and noticed fluid leaking from the transmission cooler where it connects to one of the lines. I added some transmission fluid and drove it back down to PDX Automotive. They readily admitted it was probably related to the radiator replacement and offered to take a look. In the end they fixed the leak with some Teflon tape. I was satisfied with this repair and would have considered this a five-star experience except that I later discovered they didn't bother to return the transmission fluid to its proper level. The other time was to get a failed water pump replaced. The parts cost came out to $99.53, which is reasonable. Labor charges were 0.5 hours for diagnostics and 3 hours to replace the pump. read more

These guys have some great reviews so this will likely not matter but my experience (albeit a short one) was not the best. The drivers window on my 98 Tahoe was stuck down and the forecast was for a lot of rain so I thought I would swing by and see about getting it fixed since they are just down the street from my work. I was thinking I could drop it off with them for the day (if they had time) and walk to work. They said they had time to look at it during the day so I asked if they could call me with a price before doing any work. I said that I was happy to pay for the investigation thinking it wouldnt be too much to take off the door panel and have a look see. I was told that I would likely be looking at a minimum of $100 to take off the door panel and test the window motor. I left. Totally disheartened. They didnt seem interested in taking a peek while I was standing there to see what type of door panel I had, etc. I felt like the classic "girl walks in to automotive shop and gets soaked." Luckily, I do know how to do a lot of my own automotive repairs, just not good with electrical and I am no stranger to shop/parts/ and labor fees and understand them perfectly. I just didnt think it was right to tell me I was likely looking at $100 at the least, before even taking a peek. For me, it was kind of a test. I am looking for a new mechanic. For me, trust starts immediately and this didnt do it for me. I felt like they clearly did not want my business. I left, never to return. Over the weekend, I took a look at things and it was actually very simple. The whole door panel did not need to be taken off, there was a section around the window and lock motor area that just needed to be popped off and wa-lah, in under 60 seconds I had the motor in my hand. Granted, the motor replacement will likely run me at least $103 but they wanted that just for labor. I was thinking about $25 for them to look at it to tell me what I need. So right or wrong, this was my perception. I felt very dismissed and treated like a gullible girl, which I am not. Sorry guys, you might be wonderful but I wont be back nor will I send anyone your way. read more

This garage is really good. They do fast work and it's at a descent price. I went into have my F150 worked on, just some regular maintenance (brakes, oil change, rotate the tires) and not only did they have it done in one day, but when I showed up ten minutes late ,after they closed, cause of traffic, the guy that was just leaving unlocked the garage, opened up the register and let me get my truck anyway. I've used them several times for regular maintenance and I'll keep going back. I trust them with my truck. read more

They have been my mechanic for 10+ years servicing a variety of cars and doing everything from oil changes, timing belt changes, exhaust repair, brake pad repair and more! Each time, great quality service. Trustworthy: I once brought my car into a dealer for recall work. Afterwards they told me all this other work was needed. I then sought a 2nd opinion with PDX Auto and they told me everything was fine! They could have easily sold me additional services but opted not to. I saved several hundred dollars and they got a customer for life! Pricing: They are pricier than many shops that advertise "low-priced" deals. But they offer good quality parts (that last) and labor. They are cheaper (in some cases, significantly) than dealer prices. Overall: You get peace of mind going here. You know you will get good quality work at very fair pricing. I never feel that I'm getting ripped off or sold something that I don't need. read more

Excellent and honest service! My check engine light has been on for over one year. I've taken it to several dealerships. Each has "solved" the problem, but weeks later, the light comes back on. We recently brought our 1999 Toyota Corolla into their shop. The driver's door did not open from the inside. At first, they said that it would cost around $200 for a fix. After taking off the door panel, they said that the latch was broken and would cost $500. We took the car back and my husband who is an engineer decided to try to fix it himself. What he discovered was that the latch wasn't broken at all, it just needed to be adjusted. We saved $500 by not letting PDX Automotive fix the door latch. We have been loyal customers for a long time but now we are going to look elsewhere for our car repair jobs.
