Asked for repair of electrical fault. They found a failed fuse (hidden, not in fuse box), all right, but did not test what was connected. The inside trunk release button and the cigar lighter socket don't work, despite having specifically asked them to make sure they did work. If you use them, I would strongly encourage you to check their work before leaving their premises. read more

Really really nice folks and big on the ethical/environmental aspects.My wife likes them which is rare for her, given how auto repair shops are notoriously harsh to women. However, they are pricey, both on labor and materials. We had the coolant changed and it ran over $100, which is about double what you might pay elsewhere. I had also asked them to do an inspection and they called out a couple of items that did not need servicing ("oil appears dirty": yes, that's the oil's job, and over-changing oil is hardly environmentally sound; "shocks are worn": after 8000 miles, hardly likely). Overall, 5 stars for being really nice folks, and three stars for price. Wow! I'm shocked. I called Hawthorne Auto Clinic, a place I'd used uy years ago. I remember I had a really bad experience with them. I remember that they promised to get my car to me by a certain time and they did not so I did complain and they ended up renting a vehicle for me so that I could get to work. I decided not to use them after that because the man in charge at that time was really awful to me. I imagined that with the new ownership that I could try it again so I called today. I wanted a second opinion on some electrical work happening in my car. After being put on hold, Sarah the office manager, got on the phone and in a really terse voice told me that they would be rejecting working with me because of such a bad experience they had with me the last time I needed their assistance. With me? The issue was simply that I was being jerked around and I insisted that they make it right. The couple that owned Hawthorne auto for many years was the problem not the people who currently run it. I can't believe they're denying me the right to bring my car to them. Don't upset them or they won't work on your car. UPDATE: The answer by Jim contains inaccuracies (to his benefit, of course). Good thing I had a witness with me. Your mechanic called me stupid. He was rude and pushy. I came from my work (a decent drive for me) and started the truck on my first try. And it started every single time after that. And the person who wanted to buy it bought it. The way I see it, I was trying to sell my truck (this was a pre-sale inspection), I had to go to my work, and I was put on the spot to fork over $100 to replace the battery connectors because your mechanic said they were rusted out or you refused to inspect the vehicle (which would possibly cause me to lose my sale) Most people can't just come over and take their vehicle to another location as they are at work (say I was in HIllsboro?), and I am sure most people would have paid you the $100. Your person on the phone said that the connection was rusted beyond repair. We took a picture of the connection. There was no rust. I also took it to my mechanic. I have no reason to say bad things about you (in fact, I really wanted to like you as you are very close) other than what happened. I hope you learn from this experience. I have an accent, but I am not stupid. I also want to think that this is an isolated incident. A simple apology would have made me coe to you again. I respect people who make a mistake and own to it. respectfully. read more

Great people, great service, definitely recommend! I went in to get several of my lights fixed, the service was fast and Jim had a great demeanor. The next day I noticed one of my front side lights was still out, and I was rather upset because I thought everything was taken care of (my fault for not double-checking immediately after the service). I went in a few days later, and spoke with Liz, who was a bit nonchalant, perhaps even indifferent or even bordering on disinterested? Couldn't tell. Not a huge deal. Again, they took care of it quickly, and Liz informed me that the mechanic didn't spot the light the first time around possibly due to a faulty connection. A bit inconvenient to have to come in again, but because they didn't charge me for the work, I thought that was a very fair resolution. So thanks guys, I'll definitely be returning! read more

It's hard to feel good about giving 5 stars to a place that just handed you a $1000+ bill for repairs, and yet, that's what I'm doing! Everyone I spoke with was friendly, warm and helpful. Costs were explained thoroughly up front. The price was about what I expected. The service (I needed an a/c compressor replaced) was fast! I called and made an appointment for the next day. Are they more expensive than some other independent shops? Probably. But some of the $ complaints on here don't make sense... you can't take your car into this shop and have it thoroughly checked and then CALL another shop and ask about the cost of repair. It's naive to think you're getting an accurate figure from a phone call. I have taken a total of 3 cars here, and have for many years. They do a great job, I trust them. To me, that is worth a little extra $ and I am happy (sort of) to spend my money that way. I used to work with complaints daily and have a fear of poor mechanics and miscommunication, which I've never experienced here. Also, I feel like they treat their employees well and there seems to be a loyalty there I don't see elsewhere. So I'm happy to support that. Have I ever had an issue? Yes, but they were great to deal with. I had them replace the battery, but my car continued to have issues that seemed related to a bad battery. When I took it back in weeks later, they checked it - they weren't sure what was wrong (I thought maybe they accidentally put the old battery back in?). They thought the new battery had a manufacturer's defect, and replaced it at no charge. Also I recently took my car in for a weird noise. I only waited about 5 min. and a mechanic came out and rode around with me for a while. We pulled over and he looked under the hood. I hadn't replaced the bar that holds the hood up correctly and it was just rattling around. I felt ridiculous and offered to pay something for his time - no charge and he was super nice about it. read more

So, I picked this place to take our Jeep to based soley on the fact that it is the closest auto shop to our house. I didn't find any reviews, but it is a AAA approved shop, so I figured it might be okay. We took it in because we were having some issues with our heater. I actually told my husband it was probably the motor, and sure enough, that's what it ended up being (shoulda just done it ourselves *shakes fist*) It would have been done more quickly if they had ordered the right part, but we still got it back the same day, and long before they closed. They also do a nice little checklist with your repair: check the fluid levels, fans, lights, etc. The labor was a little pricey, but no mark up with the parts. They were all really friendly down there and even gave us free bus passes to take home and get back down to pick up the car. For that, they get 4 stars :) read more

I have made an error in my original report critizing Howthorne Auto Clinic. I went back over my bill in detail. My original complaint was that they charged me way too much. In reality, the service, though preventative, was extensive. The service was over $1300 but less than the $1500 I had remembered. Therefore, I am retracting my original negative comments and revising this review so that it is accurate and fair. The receipt was detailed and easy to read. I know what exactly was done... That said, they did miss an exterior light that was out, though the receipt claimed all lights were checked. This was mentioned in two places. I also checked with the local Dearler regarding what they would charge and they claimed it would have been at least $700.00. (I suspect that the dealer is giving me a low estimate.) This is almost 50% less. I can not tell if Hawthorne Auto Clinic did more than the dealer would have, or if they fixed something that the dealer wouldn't have. The receipt didn't say they did. It is possible that the real costs at the dealer would have been more as well. Is Hawthorne justs being honest or ar they expensive? In this case the dealer would have to charge double their estimate to equal Hawthornes actual costs. Thats possible. When I spoke to a neighbor, she knew of Hawthorne and said they were expensive. This was her first comment. I expect lower prices than the dealer. I would have given this place 2-3 stars for good but expensive service. But the service may not have been that good. Get a quote and price comare before going here. I hate saying this as the dealers are not known for a good deal. In this case they may be. Sorry Jim. In addition to being professional and knowing your business we regard pricing and customer service as in important. This business is 1 for 3! In speaking with a representative on the phone concerning an Alternator replacement I was inquiring to bring a brand new alternator, the same that they would purchase (and markup) to the shop and I would pay for the labor. It was their (her) policy not to do this.....so during our conversation she became frustrated and hug up on me....during mid conversation! Business must be good to treat a potential customer this way! We will NEVER go to this shop again! The pricing is HIGH and looking at all of the Electric "clown cars" in their parking lot it seems these are the type of customers they get some type of Tax Break from Oregon. So, if you drive a "gas car" then the prices are high and the customer service is lower. read more

i have mixed feelings about this place. The mechanic that I talked to was extremely helpful over the phone. When I got a comprehensive check on a '91 Honda Civic si that I'd just purchased, they did a great job finding even the tiniest things that were wrong. However, the woman that talked with me about the diagnostic, seemed to have a prejudice about my car, underhandedly insulting it throughout the conversation. I had gone in to get the muffler fixed, and shocks and struts replaced because the car had been lowered. The lady repeatedly asked me whether the previous owner had been a teenaged boy and scoffed as she listed the various issues with the car. She seemed determined to make me feel bad about my car. The diagnostic sheet they gave me was vague about the cost of parts and labor and would have been more trustworthy with more details. I left feeling pretty beaten down with a rather expensive list of repairs ahead. After mulling over this a while I decided to go somewhere else to get the work done. Bradshaw's on Hawthorne installed new struts and shocks for $300 less. They also did some brake work for about the same as HAC was going to charge. The difference with Bradshaw's was the attitude. They were friendly, helpful, and I'd definately go back there again. They also seemed more accustomed to older cars, if you call a '91 old. A couple people have told me Hawthorne Auto Clinic does high quality work, but based on the prices and the negative interaction I don't think I'd go back here. read more

I will only go to Hawthorne Auto Clinic from now on. I called them because the Toyota dealership told me my car had a leak that was 9/10 in severity and would be $2500 to fix when I was just going in for a routine oil change. I called Hawthorne to get a second opinion and they told me I could come down right away to have it looked at. I came down and they were super friendly and welcoming and helpful, the mechanic saw me right away, and lifted my car up and actually let me walk out and see the part for myself. He explained what I was looking at and showed that it was so minor it couldn't even be considered a leak, but minor seepage rather and that at most should just keep an eye on it between oil changes but wouldn't likely notice anything due to how minuscule the issue was. Every member of the staff was warm and inviting and knowledgeable. They actually replaced my engine air filter on the spot when I neglected to do so at the dealership because when I showed up for the appointment the price was double what I was quoted on the phone. Hawthorne had a much better price on the part and labor and was able to do it quickly even though I never even made an appointment. Hawthorne Auto Clinic took over service on my 2000 Outback after I moved away from Hood River (and Andy of shadetree auto. seriously, if you're in the gorge, GO TO shadetree auto in white salmon). They're nice folks and treated me well. I really have a hard time believing some of the 1 and 2-star reviews on here. That said, when I recently sold my car, the purchasing party's mechanic noted the radiator hose would need to be replaced soon. That was pretty surprising because I'd had HAC replace my radiator 2 months ago. Their quote was at the high end of the other quotes. The part is $20, why wasn't that included or mentioned? So, yeah. Such great people! I had planned on bringing in my car for its 90k tune up, but it snowed so much the night before that I didn't want to drive my car anywhere. I called Hawthorne auto to cancel, but they said they could come pick it up for me! We reviewed the list of things they would inspect and fix plus my total fee, all while standing on my front lawn! Just visited there this week to have two items taken care of : mystery slow leak in one tire and a broken passenger outside mirror. They not only solved the problems but looked beyond the usual costly fix of most shops : new tire and manufacturers new mirror. Instead they took the time to look for and found work arounds (only a valve stem needed and a slightly used mirror) which saved me big $. Not many shops are willing to take the time required. I've been using them for three years now for my 15 yr old subaru, have always been pleased with their competent and excellent service and will continue to rely on their expertise. read more
