I've been a loyal Arthur's customer for several years, which makes this disappointing to write. What should have been a straightforward heat/AC repair turned into four separate appointments due to poor communication and planning. Within these appointments, I experienced overbooking which resulted in them not even getting to my car, repeated delays due to parts, being left without my car for an entire weekend with no pickup option (even though my car was drivable w/o the heat/ac) and ultimately discovering that my camera and radio were no longer working after the repair, an issue they caused. When I returned to have that fixed, I also noticed I was charged for a part I never authorized, which they later acknowledged was an internal mistake and refunded. While I understand parts delays can happen, the lack of communication and consideration for the inconvenience caused was unacceptable. Although a small discount was applied when I asked for compensation, in my opinion, the amount did not align with the price I paid, the ongoing issues and unprofessionalism I experienced. I won't be returning to Arthur's and I can't recommend their services. read more

Given the reputation many mechanics have, we were willing to go the extra distance--and we're glad we did. They handled our oil change quickly and honestly, without trying to upsell us on unnecessary services, which has been a common experience elsewhere. After being told by Honda dealership my 2013 Honda Civic which has 34,000 miles would need a $7000.00 repair, I brought the car to Arthur's for a second opinion. Shane advised the mechanic there was able to diagnose a grounding wire that needed attention and they charged me $180.00!! They got a new customer- very honest and highly skilled mechanics. Last Summer I brought my 2008 Equinox to Arthur's Automotive to have them go through my entire car and fix anything that's not working correctly. They took the car and had it for several days and called me when they thought they were done.. I picked it up and paid close to $1700 dollars and drove home A few days later I was going to Washington State and when I got half way across the bridge white smoke, which I found out later, was steam puring out the hood! I just rolled to a patch of grass between the exits to Vancouver and Camas and stopped . I called a tow truck and had him take it back to Arthur's Automotive. It was Sunday so he parked it in the lot, locked it up and left the keys.in it. I left a message letting them know what happened. They called a couple days later letting me know the engine was completely ruined and would cost too much for a replacement. Not one time did they apologize. I had told him there was a problem with the water container and needed to watch it for leaks. They talked to me about it and looked at it. I've been advised to seek legal advice so I will be doing that at the advice of family members. read more

Took my truck to them, their mechanics said it was running fine when it was not. It surges up and down when stopped at red lights. My son hooked it up to his tester and it said it needs a 200 dollar engine part (I forget what he said it was called), so I took it to Auto Zone to confirm and yes it needs an engine part. These mechanics don't seem to know what they're doing. Then my daughter makes an appt. for an oil change. She asks me to take it in for her. So when I get there they tell me their tanks are full and they can't do the oil change. They don't seem to know what they're doing there. I don't recommend these guys at all. read more

I have two older cars which had been maintained by Everett St. Autoworks for over a decade. Everett informed me that they lost their mechanic who works with older cars and that I needed to find another mechanic, frustrating but understandable. I decided to give Arthur's a try because they are in the neighborhood and kept sending me fliers - it was an easy choice. I brought the first vehicle in for inspection (2000 RAV4) and I was initially quite happy with the experience. They identified an important issue that Everett had missed, and I appreciated their system which shows you actual photos of the issues so you don't have to just trust them on it. I was so happy from the results here I brought down my second car, a 1994 Mazda Miata, for inspection. The results of that inspection were very surprising - Arthur's gave me a long list of services that were required for it including brakes (they said they were at 3mm), air filter (which they said was completely clogged), clutch fluid service, differential fluid service, transmission fluid service - and in each case they presented that they had evidence this was needed (though unlike the RAV they didn't show me the evidence.) This report was suspect, but because the car was going in the garage for the winter, I decided to not take any of the recommendations and revisit them in the summer. Fast forward to next summer. It's eight months later, the Miata has been driven a grand total of 20 miles for maintenance purposes. I decide to bring it back in for another inspection, but to first personally inspect the aspects that were easy to look at. First thing I did was inspect the air filter, and much to my surprise, it was basically brand new. There was almost no dust visible on it - a big contrast compared with their statement that it was fully clogged. I then checked the clutch fluid which is easy to inspect, and it appeared visually in good shape. I bring the car in for another inspection and right away let the person at the desk know about the discrepancies in a calm and reasoned manner. They told me that the fluids might look OK but have water in them, but that they would reinspect everything. To my absolute shock, their re-inspection was clean with the exception of a timing belt change which was being recommended based on a lack of service records, not actual evidence. That recommendation is and was reasonable, but the rest? The brakes that they reported were at 3mm and needed changed? Actually they were at 5mm - by their own measurement! The fluids that needed changing? None of them actually needed changing, as confirmed by their own reinspection. Arthur's had prescribed over $1,500 of unnecessary work, and their own inspection had caught that this happened. Now they're caught red handed, because both the old report and the new one are in their computer, and the discrepancies are completely clear. So here's the reason I'm writing this. If you're an auto shop whose brand name includes "the last honest mechanic" and your offices are filled with posters and signs about honesty and integrity and good customer communications, what's the right response to this? There was no question this had happened, so what was Arthur's take? They told me that the person who had done that job no longer worked there and that may be why. Hang on a second. There wasn't an apology or acknowledgment for having proposed $1,500 in unnecessary work, just blaming someone who no longer worked there. Any company that is truly honest and has integrity would have done an investigation into how this happened and been profusely apologetic. How many other cars did this mechanic that got fired work on? Did any of those cars have glaring discrepancies in their inspections like mine did? How many people actually did what they recommended and got unnecessary service? If it was my shop and I found a situation where, on file in my own computer, it's clear that such a mistake had been made, I would offer some kind of real recognition. But that's not what I got, just a dismissal, and while all these red flags should have kept me away, it's the fact that they didn't seem to care that the mistake had happened, and wouldn't take responsibility for it, that has me looking for a new mechanic. read more

I was urged by a friend to try Arthur's Automotive based on her very positive experience. They even provide rides to and from their shop if needed! Everyone was extremely professional. I went in for an oil change on a 20 yo car. Bad news was I needed more than an oil change. But I appreciated that they did do a complete Diagnostic, explained it thoroughly, and texted me the results beforehand. All the people I dealt with were personable and attentive, especially Kyle. And it doesn't hurt that they are so close to me--I've driven by millions of times--and handy for Montavilla and Mt Tabor neighborhoods! read more

I had a very frustrating experience with Arthur's Automotive and cannot recommend their services. I brought my 2011 Toyota in because it wouldn't start without a jump, and ended up paying over $2,000 for their repairs. After keeping my car for three weeks, they replaced the engine control module among other parts and gave me back a car with several new electrical issues. The initial diagnosis was really unclear. They replaced the battery (which made sense) but then recommended replacing the engine control module. I sought a second opinion from other mechanics, and all of them told me that, for a well-maintained Toyota with only 115K miles, that was unheard of. Arthur's sent me pictures of a Subaru in the shop, reported odd mileage to Carfax, and couldn't explain why it took so long to perform diagnostics. Attention to detail is lacking. After two weeks, I got my car back, only for it to not start again just two days later I found that they left one of the battery terminals totally loose! After tightening the connector, I had to get it towed back to Arthur's, where it stayed for another week. When I finally got it back the second time, it was clear that my car hadn't been properly repaired. The brake lights, airbags and cruise control did not work, the clock reset every time I started the car, and the door lock sensors no longer functioned. To top it off, a fuse underneath the engine was found missing. Frustrated, I took my car to another shop, and they fixed everything--in just two days on Thanksgiving week, and even provided me with a loaner car. The difference in both the speed of the repair and the quality of service was night-and-day. TLDR: Arthur's Automotive kept my car for weeks, recommended unnecessary and expensive repairs, and returned it with a host of new issues, some of which posed serious safety concerns. Everyone there is polite and pleasant--but that's not what I'm paying for. The poor communication and subpar work make it impossible for me to recommend this shop. Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere. read more

I wrote a very lengthy review on SureCritic but I can't seem to find it to copy and paste it here. So here is the bottom line. I spent $1822.09 in total to repair my car. The reason I brought it in was because it wasn't turning over on the first turn in the ignition and the engine light came on. So they did $165 worth of diagnostics and installed a new fuel pump. After two weeks of back and forth I picked up the car as Arthur's reps insisted that they did not have any issue starting it up and that it did not "crank" to start. Yet they installed a new fuel pump for $1600 which made no change to the problem I brought it in for. It cranked when I picked it up, and it still cranks every time I try to start it. I'm a senior citizen and I feel I was taken advantage of. I will never return to them and I am baffled by all the 5 star ratings I'm seeing. Go figure..... read more

Pros: googled best price for Synthetic Oil change. Arthur's name came up along with a Truly Great Price, which they Honored, since it was not the usual Price. Nice location. Rolled my Car in the Bay at 10:00 for my 10:00 Appt. Friendly and punctual. Cons: Two items they brought up from their Free Inspection, were questionable. 1) I agree my Battery was at its age limit, and not providing the Cold Cranking Amps it should. But telling me it has Zero Cranking Amps, and that they had to jump the Car did not sound likely to me. I declined purchasing a New Battery from them and dropped by a Batteries + Store on the way Home. There I watched them hook up a device that read there was 410 Cranking Amps which is weak, but Will/Did start up the Car. I bought a New Battery from them(installed), and paid $40 less than what Arthur's just quoted me 2) Was told my Brake Fluid had 2-3% water content in it, and it should be Zero. I declined having it Drained and replaced. Once Home I called Subaru of Portland and Spoke to the Svc Rep I have dealt with since I bought my Car New 6 years ago. I asked what they charge for this same Svc, and it was $50 less than I was just quoted at Arthur's. He also asked me why I thought it needed changing. He reminded me the Brake Fluid had been changed a year ago when I brought it in for its 30K Svc. Everthing said above is True. I'll leave others to draw their own conclusions. But I won't be returning to Arthur's myself. read more

I have a Dodge Viper that I have a hard time trusting people to work on. I had taken it to the Dodge dealership where they have Viper mechanics who specialize in working on this particular vehicle, they totally sucked. So after searching for quite some time for a mechanic, I was lucky enough to find Arthur's Automotive. They installed new stainless steel braided power steering lines because my old ones were leaking badly. The Arthur's Automotive team knocked out the work in less than a day. Their integrity made this easy (I did my homework. Trust but verify :-). Repairs were solid and timely. Front office was courteous and very helpful. A major part failed which Arthur's had replaced previously and I mistakenly thought the warrantee had expired. They could have easily wiggled out of it or not called it to my attention. They even took the extra step to do some research and learned that the serious issue my vehicle had was still under manufacturer's warranty. I never would have guessed that. This was a fantastic company for auto repair from the start. Crazy good communication, the estimate I got for the work was HIGHER than what they charged us!!!! We paid lower than the estimate!!!! After the worst news I could probably get, Arthur's Automotive lived up to their positive reviewed and delivered on their promise to return my truck to me in good safe condition. I can't even begin to say how amazing this shop is. My engine went out in my car and it was supposed to fixed through a warranty from the company I bought it from and boy did they give us hell. Aaron was absolutely outstanding at communicating with me what was going on, what the warranty company was saying, defending our claim, and telling me what I should do next. It took 3 months (which I felt guilty for taking up room in their shop but our hands were tied) but we got them to pay for it and Arthur's Automative fixed my car. I can't thank the entire team enough for being patient and efficient throughout the whole process. We were able to get the repairs mostly paid for and were content enough with the bill we were left with in the end. I am so very appreciative to this team especially Aaron for keeping me sane during this whole ordeal.
