I took my 2019 Outback for 60K standard service on the very high recommendation of a family member. Came to about $500 and there is no indication they did anything but change the spark pllugs - but that's not the worst of it. The car came back with a malfunction of the master passenger window switch (worked fine when dropped off). They took no responsibility for it and said it needed a new switch, $500 for the part + $80 labor. I went home and googled it, found out the malfunction was caused by a battery being temporarily disconnected and how to reprogram it - which I did it myself in less than 5 minutes. Long story short, these guys seem well intentioned but appear to be incompetent, at least as far as later model Suburu's go. read more

I was helping my girlfriend buy a new car and needed a pre-purchase inspection, my friend recommended Mickey's Automotive so I called to make an appointment. Blake helped us schedule one and said "we do not charge for pre-purchase inspections". We were so shocked we had to call back to make sure we heard that correctly, yup no charge, wow most shops charge around $100, that's awesome! When we arrived they were efficient, communicative, and thorough. He said he would invite us back to the garage and show us any trouble spots he found. Luckily he found none! Afterwards he took the time to speak with us about the business and how he runs it. I left feeling I had just found an honest mechanic with integrity, rare. I am just barely enough of an amateur mechanic to know when I am being lied to. I came to Mikey's after a bad experience with my old Suburban where a shop in my neighborhood tried to sell me muffler bearings (so to speak). Mikey's was recommended by a friend for their honesty and I could not be more pleased. Mickey's is SLAMMED with customers right now, and I know why. They do great work at an affordable price and never screw you over. My car called it quits on me over two weekends ago and I had it towed to Mickey's. They got to my car in order of their appointments for the week and took care of the alternator and the belt. It now runs as good as new and didn't cost me an arm and a leg. Blake is always awesome and takes great care of his customers. Wow, these guys are legit! I first met up with Blake and he was very professional and friendly and gave me a rough estimate of what he was going to check out with my car. I was expecting to pay for about a half hour labor to have my fuel system checked and cleared out. Well they didn't find what I thought they would but they still took the time out of their day to spend almost an hour with diagnostic. When I went to take out my card and pay,the gentleman (Beau I believe was his name but could be wrong?) said no charge. I was shocked! If I wind up with any other problems I will absolutely I've these guys my business!! *Update* 09/27/19 I wish I could just keep writing reviews for these guys but I'll update that I wound up buying a 2017 Chevy Volt from Ron Tonkin. Soon after buying it, it's started making a weird and very loud squeaking sound so I took it to Ron Tonkin to have them check it out since I had just bought the car from them a few weeks before... well they kept my car almost a week and then finally "looked" at my car and said they didn't see anything wrong.. of course the problem was still happening and after them blowing me off I called Blake and Beau and they said bring it in.. a few hours later Beau calls me back saying we fixed your car! It was a simple fix that they said there's no way someone who actually would have looked at my car wouldn't have been able to miss. I tried to offer payment for this fix but they wouldn't take it... I won't get into it but it's been a really hard time in my life and it brought me to tears (happy tears) to have them be so honest and caring to help me the way they have. These young men are honest and knowledgeable mechanics and I am now a life long customer of theirs for anything that will need work on my cars. Will never go elsewhere for car troubles again. My wife and I have gotten both our cars serviced here. I am always anxious whenever I have to take the car in if there's an issue. I have been taken advantage of on several occasions over the years. Both Beau and Blake are kind, knowledgeable, fair and efficient. They didn't charge to diagnose either situation and gave us prices that were drastically less than 2 other places. Will come back for every problem and also oil changes/regular maintenance. I live in Austin, Texas, and was looking at buying a used car from a shop nearby Mickey's. I worked with Beau and Blake, and they were both beyond phenomenal. They looked the car over for me (I couldn't come up and see it in person) and did an extremely thorough job. They found a few shady things that had been done to conceal the big issues the car had, and helped me to see that I almost bought a lemon. On top of that, they didn't even charge me for the service! I wish that I lived in Portland so that I could sing their praises to all of my friends. But since I can't, I'm doing it here! Please give this place your business. You know, I've been coming here for a few years now. What I admire most about this shop is that they will go out of their way to cut a cost for you and otherwise just be accommodating. I don't live in the neighborhood anymore, and I drive an older, grumpier, car. So things have come up where I'm rolling into the closest establishment I can find, just wanting to know if the ole girl has still got a few years left. More than once, I have then come back to Mickey's, just wanting a straight answer and a little help. I now live in Southwest Portland but still make the trip alllllll the way back to Mickey's because I have better experiences there. And I am not the sort of person who likes an extra drive. In fact, I just left such a scathing review of the last nightmare I experienced in my new neighborhood, that I felt like the least I could do now was properly promote something better. I might get an oil change in my area out of convenience if I have to, but when it comes to just wanting the stupid car fixed without feeling swindled and possibly in tears, I have gotten the message that Mickey's is gold! An unpretentious location, kind of hidden behind the freeway and down a bumpy alley, their priority is just fixing the goddamned car for you and making everyone's life easier. Thank you! read more

I decided to get a pre-purchase inspection at Mickey's Automotive after seeing the great reviews on Yelp. I stopped by with the car on my way to the dealership with plans to purchase it that evening and I was in a pinch because I had no other form of transportation if this didn't pan out. I made the mistake of not making an appointment, and was told they were completely booked out for another week, but Blake was kind enough to set aside his current obligations and help me in a pinch. He gave me a full report for the car and was completely honest and even told me what to expect in the next few months/years for the vehicle. Very honest and trustworthy. My catalytic converter was stolen and I called and talked to Blake. He said if I dropped my car off the next day they could fix it in 1-2 days. I had to drop it off the next morning before they opened because I had to get to work. I dropped it off at 7:30, they opened at 8, and her called me by 9am and said it was done! He has ordered the part the night before right after I called him. My husband's catalytic converter was stolen 2 months prior and Blake fixed it and we had a great experience then as well. Blake and his staff are the most honest, affordable, trustworthy mechanics I've ever met. Recently bought a van without getting a pre-purchase inspection and began to worry something was seriously wrong, basically went to Blake with a blank check. He gave me an oil change and told me everything looked great and it was just an underpowered engine, but totally mechanically sound. Was about to sell my Subaru and then it started making a terrible scraping sound that sounded like a rock was stuck in my brakes. Took it to a different mechanic who was "unable to recreate the sound" that had been constant for a week. They told me I needed new brakes, a brake fluid flush, and an "engine tune-up." For the same repairs, Blake quoted me about $400 less, but when I took the Subaru in to him, he said my brake fluid and engine were fine, my brakes were fine but my pads would need to be replaced in the next 10k miles. He then found the rock I swore was rattling around, removed it for free and didn't charge me a dime. I walked out of another mechanic with a misdiagnosed issue and an invoice for $850 worth of unnecessary repairs, and I walked out of Mickey's with the problem solved in under ten minutes and didn't spent a penny. Brought my car here after it wouldn't start. 2015 Hyundai Elantra. While waiting for tow I tried again and it started. After looking on yelp for a highly rated car repair shop I found Mickey's which has perfect reviews and for good cause. Beau was super knowledgeable and friendly. Even without an appointment he was able to fit me in and discovered it was loose wires which he tightened and he didn't even charge me. This act has inspired my loyalty and trust and I will only be bringing my car here from now on. read more

An honest neighborhood shop who charged me a very very reasonable rate for PDX in 2020.

Giving this place 1 star is too much! I originally called them a few weeks ago & spoke with Beau about my car's malfunction indicator light displaying. He said he can scan it for a diagnosis so based on this I told him I wold stop in. According to them & their posted hours of operation, they close at 5PM. I arrived at 4:45PM & saw no staff & the open sign was off. One employee came out named Blake & said they were closed, in a rude way. I asked why they closed 15mns early & he said with a bad attitude that it was his birthday so he needs to leave & he can't help me. He didn't apologize, didn't show any professionalism nor concern that he shut down the business early to go out. A few days later my MIL warning display just disappeared so I let it go, but a few days ago it came back again. I was in the area & decided to give them another chance so I called them & brought my car in again for a diagnosis. I handed Blake my keys & immediately saw that same pathetic, unprofessional bad attitude he famously displayed the first time I met him. He didn't say hi, didn't smile & acted like I was inconveniencing him. He came back with an estimate that contained a list of 3 areas of repair, so I wanted to confirm the details. I asked him what was specifically wrong with my car's housing assembly & purge valve, as I'm not a mechanic & I wanted to get a clear idea of my car's issues. He gave me a very rude look, then in a condescending way told me he doesn't have time to go into details about the repairs & that he's busy. I was shocked that he had the audacity to speak to me with such disrespect, and for no valid reason. I was so upset I just walked out! Blake should never have customer contact, in fact he was so rude & unprofessional that he should be fired, as obviously it's a pattern with him. Another staff member looked angry so this place just has bad energy & is not one to trust your car to. This place is a poor excuse for a legitimate business & these guys need to learn that the customer's satisfaction is the #1 priority. Their customers pay their bills so maybe one day they will learn this, after losing more business. Do yourself a big favor & find a professional mechanic shop that respects their customers, as these guys are clueless. read more

I've been taking my cars to Mickey's for 10-ish years, and I love these guys. Blake and Beau (and Mickey of course, when he was still working) have always been nothing but kind, professional, honest, and courteous. They always give me a completely honest opinion about which repairs and maintenance are really required. My wife says that Mickey's is the one shop where she's been comfortable going on her own without having to worry about being talked down to or taken advantage of because she's a woman at a mechanic shop. There have been several times where the work has come in cheaper than originally quoted, and they've also been willing to look around for a cheaper/non-OEM part when a brand new one was particularly expensive. $10 to fix all-important A/C for cross-country summertime road trip! You read that right, Mickey charged me ten big 'uns to fix the freon leak in my g/f's car, which we subsequently drove all the way to Florida and back. A/C worked beautifully long afterward. Mickey's trick: liquid steel. For this, Mickey has earned my long-time patronage. Not all fixes are as fast or insanely cheap, but the man is fair, honest, and gets-r-done plenty fast fo' ya. First off, allow me to establish my credibility in writing this review. I have previously worked as an auto damage adjuster for insurance companies. My job was to inspect all damages to vehicles and determine if the mechanic/technicians were overcharging or lying (spoiler alert: they were). I know cars and I know how to weed through fabrications from mechanical or body shop staff. In fact, the industry is notorious for gouging customers for unnecessary or trumped up repairs. Almost everyone has a story of how they were taken advantage of or even lied to by an unscrupulous mechanic! Its as if Mickey's was the only repair shop to ever figure out that customers will give them business just for being honest and fair. They understand that by being the only honest mechanics, they are breeding loyalty in their clientele who will be back for repeat business. I am truly impressed by their ethics. Sometimes when gauging a mechanic I am unfamiliar with, I will *test* them by feigning ignorance about a supposed mechanical issue and seeing if they lie or up-sell. The staff at Mickey's have always passed these tests! Lastly, I am very impressed by how they do diagnosis for free! Even when its not clear if I can provide them with a subsequent repair job, they are always happy to check into my concerns and inspect the vehicle for free. I would expect to pay a reasonable diagnosis fee at any shop; they are the first I have found who does not charge a fee at all. They are surely going to be my only automotive repair shop in portland. read more

Mickey's helped me out in a dire DEQ situation with my aging Corolla and I cannot be more grateful. Not only are Mickey and Blake extremely knowlegable, fair, and honest, they will make sure the job gets done in a timely manner without compromising quality. Both are also very down to earth and easy to chat with. Other mechanics I have been to were intimidating or condescending; this is definitely not the case here! They are located a block from a bus stop and also right by a MAX station which is super convenient if you need to leave your car overnight. read more

Needed to have my brakes replaced for the first time since I bought my car. I went to the dealership and was quoted $289. My roommate recommended Mickey's, so I gave him a call. Got a quote for $220, so I made an appointment. I could not be happier. It only took about 30 minutes, he answered all of my questions, and I learned a bit about brakes and rotors. Mickey's Automotive is my new favorite auto shop. I brought my new (used) Honda CRV to the Honda dealership for a full check up and had a sizable list of work to get done for a hefty cost. I wanted to get a second opinion and a friend recommended Mickey's. I was pleasantly surprised with the thorough check up from Mickey's at a fraction of the cost and found out a few things listed from the dealership were unnecessary. Mickey and Blake were easy to talk to and work with as well as reliable and reasonable. They had no problem with hoisting my car up on the lift and explaining exactly what was going on and what they were going to do to fix it.
