I recently had a friend stay here for 3 nights as they reached the end of their life. I cannot begin to say how grateful I am for the staff and the accommodations provided. This place simply handles things differently: they take a gentle approach where educating friends and family of the passing is priority. I felt extraordinarily comfortable and safe/secure as I watched my friend pass as the nurses were more than well-equipped to do their job. Every question I had (and I had a lot) was answered kindly, without judgment. I never want to see anyone pass again here but I would strongly recommend this place. Hospice Austin and Christopher House were an absolute godsend and salve to a very difficult time. We interviewed multiple hospices and decided on Hospice Austin. They came highly recommended from MD Anderson and we had multiple comments along the way - from our medical equipment delivery people down to our cremation company - who all said they are the best to work with. Our nurse, Katie, was so incredibly kind and gentle. Whenever we needed anything - at any hour - we would be responded to quickly. We used Christopher House as a transition point when my mother left MD Anderson and then in her final hours as we needed a medication change. We also appreciated that Christopher House doesn't feel clinical and they have many kind volunteers throughout the day. Hospice Austin has checked in with us along the way and post my mother's passing, always ensuring we had every ounce of support they could give. The doctor signed off on her death paperwork right away, which allowed us to remove one stressor off of our plates - apparently, not all doctors/facilities are so swift. If you are in need of hospice for a loved one, you can't go wrong here. We wanted a hospice that had a facility if needed, and that was the right choice for us. read more

Hospice provides comfort, not cure Hospice can be provided in the hospital, or at home Hospice offers nurse and doctor assistance Hospice offers medication for comfort Hospice provides equipment and supplies Hospice provides assistance with bathing several times a week Hospice offers support of families at least a year following the death of the patient Hospice does not provide 24/7 care of patient (though they are available for consult) My own experience of hospice was excellent. They were sensitive to our particular needs and were never an intrusion in our home. They afforded grace in a difficult time. read more

Not impressed is all I can say. The nurse was only allowed to come by twice a month. Apparently that's Medicare's decision. Plus our nurse was tuned into the patient. And the patient adored the nurse. I had to call the Nurse on Duty several times. They answered my questions mostly. Sometimes the answer was "I guess so". read more

I lasted all of two months working for a for-profit hospice. Never again. I have been so happy working for Hospice Austin, and there is a huge difference working for a non-profit. Mainly, patients and families come first. I know every decision that is made is for the benefit of the patient, and you can't say that about for-profit hospice companies. read more

The few nursing staff I came in contact with for the 3 days my husban was on service seemed very caring. HOWEVER, he was discharged into Hospice Austin care on a Friday morning. I was told everything would be in place and I would have a team to assist in care. He was on heavy pain meds but no meds were provided, no supplies were provided, no "team" available until Monday. I had to wait for the doctor to call in morphine to the pharmacy, then wait for it to be filled, then go to another pharmacy when the drugs were not available. He was in absolute agony for 6-7 hours. I was beyond distressed since I could do nothing more to help. I think was torture or at least criminal neglect. He died 3 days later. I regret every having brought him home. At least he would have gotten pain medication. read more

My mom has dementia and recently had a stay at St. David's Round Rock where the social worker gave Hospice Austin my information to discuss services for my mother. This company has called and texted me numerous times trying to get my business. My complaint goes for the lack of compassion they exuded as Latasha called me to "follow up" about my dying mother on EASTER SUNDAY Morning. First, there was no follow up that needed to be had and second, especially on a holiday where no one wants to think about hospice and their loved one. That one phone call spun me into a sad downward depression. Furthermore, when I asked Latasha what she was thinking by calling me on Easter Sunday morning, her answer was "are we seriously going to argue about this?". The lack of empathy, sympathy, and compassion was shocking. She yelled over my yells. Never once offered an apology and hung up on me. Just think, if they treat the family with this kind of behavior, how do they treat the actual patient? I will be contacting the owner of Hospice Austin so he can advice to better training. read more

A year ago today, at approximately 11 am, was contacted by Hospice Austin. They were asked to call to inform me my husband passed away the night before and provide the funeral home information where his body had been moved. Hospice Austin, and the staff were angels during a very difficult time for my family. It was amazing how they worked. When I look back, there was definitely a system in place, because it ran flawlessly. From the nurses, social workers, chaplain.......even paying my moms utilities bills. It all was there just in time. We were not waiting for help. The people are what made it special. His last days were not chaotic, but was a process and a time for healing for my family. I have put off writing a review, because I've been waiting for a response to my concerns. My husband was end stage Pancreatic cancer when we requested hospice in the fall of 2015. He passed away on 12/6/15 and as of today I still have had no response to the report of the following issues: * A new nurse every other day, between Thanksgiving and the 12/6th we never saw the same nurse twice. There was no continuity of care * one nurse actually told us that the cancer had spread to his jaw, and requested the doctor to prescribe morphine to " aid in his journey" thankfully the doctor did not/could not do without seeing his records, it turned out it was mouth sores * one nurse scolded my husband for getting out of bed because she had to come out and fill out paperwork if he fell, which he had...he had told me when he was told he could no longer get out of bed, he would just die. He never tried to get out of bed again, and I hold that nurse responsible for my husband's rapid decline. She killed his will to live. * Nurse arrives and assesses the situation, tells me that he is at end stage, but she doesn't want to list him as actively dying, b/c she would have to stay and she would miss her son's birthday party. * Sunday morning 8 am "nurse" arrives, slightly hungover, tells me to just give him a "whore bath" because he was too tired for a full bath. When I asked what a whore bath was, " just his pits and pubes" I asked her what was going to happen next ( I am not an expert) she said he had at least a week. The nurse on the phone that morning could hear his "death rattle" by 2 o'clock, he was gone. * Nurse (who had the birthday party to attend) shows up at 4:30. Pronounced him deceased. Asked me if I wanted her to call the funeral home. NEVER cleaned up my husband, never prepared him to leave the house. I cleaned up his bed. She bolted out of here as soon as she could. And that was the last we heard from Hospice Austin...the only person to extend condolences was the sweet delivery man who would come to deliver and pick up the hospital items. * I wrote a detailed report to the director. It was too late to give aid or comfort to my husband, myself, or my children. But I didn't want anyone else to endure this. She assured me I would be copied on the report and the response that would be given. She also told me that Medicare would be told of the report. No report with Medicare was ever filed, no response has ever been given to me. I have never heard from the social worker, the chaplain, or the director. But rest assured I get every fundraising flyer, letter, and card that they mail out. I am a firm believer in the hospice process. I was devastated by Hospice Austin and their lack of caring, professionalism, and plain breaking the rules ( All of his medications, including the care kit, were left here. The nurse even offered my son the narcotics. I can never change this experience for us, I can never get the sound of the nurse scolding my poor husband, or the thought that some of the last words my husband heard was a hungover nurses "whore bath" and I will always hate the fact that he wasn't bathed and respected more by this staff. read more

My neighbor and close friend, a World War II veteran, recently passed away. For his final two weeks, he was cared for by Hospice Austin. I was able to witness the kind, loving and respectful care that Hospice Austin nurses provided to him. He was lucid--and even cheerful--until the end and I know he truly appreciated the kindness and quality of care that he received. Needless to say, so did his family. Under the care of Hospice Austin and his own devoted family, he was able to die peacefully, comfortably, with dignity, and in his own home. read more

Initially we were pleased with Hospice of Austin. Unfortunately we found out after they were no longer caring for our Mom, they were heavily prescribing 3 different "psych meds" so it would be easier for staff to give her showers. I would not recommend them, as they rely too heavily on these meds. Mom has a new hospice organization, no psych meds whatsoever. read more

This is not the fun part of life, the dying part. I used to have a large extended family. After watching multiple beloved older relatives suffer through debilitating illnesses and eventually die, I decided that if I ever had a say in helping a loved one in that position, I'd try to find a gentler, more supportive route. And that hasn't ever been an easy decision to make, either, speaking from experience. Of the various Hospices I've dealt with, this one has been the most supportive. They've been invaluable to have on board and have provided guidance and support for my loved ones and for our family as needed. Sometimes, that process has dragged out over a year, and they've still been there. They stand out from other local providers because they are not-for-profit, which allows them to offer support for patients who don't have insurance or who aren't old enough to have Medicare pay for their services. So there is no cost to the patient receiving services, or to their families. If you've never used Hospice, know that your insurance usually covers the cost, and the care focuses on pain relief, comfort, and emotional and physical support to allow for dying naturally and as peacefully as possible, without being hooked up to life support or having other invasive measures applied to extend life. You have to sign legal papers indicating that you want this approach, or the law requires medical personnel to try to resuscitate you, no matter how needless or hopeless that may seem at the time. Ask a lot of questions. Some of the nurses and caregivers I've dealt with have been spectacular, and some have just been good, but none have been bad. They all seem to have kind hearts. There is some turnover and shuffling of caseloads, so if you're with them over a longer period of time, you may see some different social workers or caregivers or clergy. If they already come to the facility where your loved one resides for other patients, they will be there to help you out more often, just FYI. They do have a residence for the very end of life acute care, when the patient needs 24-hour attention because otherwise pain can't be kept under control, and when it makes sense to move them. That's Christopher House. I haven't used it yet. So far, they've come to various retirement communities and once to the hospital for us, when bad things happened quickly and we realized our loved one wasn't leaving there. That was unexpected, and it sucked, and frankly we didn't receive the full-on Hospice support experience we'd experienced in other circumstances. They will defer to hospital personnel, unlike when your loved one is at home or in a retirement community. Again, ask a lot of questions. If you aren't sure you're ready to change the treatment focus or what that will look like, they will have a nurse come out and sit with you, talk with the patient and medical personnel, look at records, and answer questions so you can consider all options. They will help you get legal and medical paperwork you need. They will find social services and medical equipment and medical support you may need. A Hospice clergy person comes with the support team, and they're sometimes available to preside over local funeral and memorial services. They offer grief support and general support after your loved one passes on, including special support programs for any children involved. And believe me, we can use all the support we can get, because it's never easy to say goodbye to someone we love. read more

It has taken me a month to get around to reviewing Hospice Austin. I really wanted to like them and the snowstorm in February 2021 was out of their control for sure but what was in their control was how they mismanaged the medications they called in to pharmacies. Rather than sending LIQUID morphine to a pharmacy my husband risked his wellbeing to get to they sent tablets. Rather than tell us there were things available like fentanyl patches, they stayed mum. They were trying to triage my situation (taking care of my dying mom alone with no nurses) as things came up rather than thinking ahead of what I might need a few hours or a day down the line when we would be even more snowed in. I had to get advice from Facebook nurses on what to do and they were all very surprised I was crushing tablets of morhphine and administering to a dying person who couldn't swallow rather than having access to the liquid form which would have been INFINITELY easier to admininster. There were also other medications that could have been prescribed but weren't that would have made my moms last dying night more tolerable (fentanyl patch) etc. The way they left us in the lurch was inhumane. By the end we were rectally administering morphine and the doctor on call didn't know what else to do but to tell us to use benadryl rectally along with the morphine because we were so ill equipped with medication due to the incompetence of the nurse that called in the rx we risked my husband's life in the snow to get. Again, if there wasn't a snow storm we could have asked for medication to be prescribed and gotten it. But Hospice Austin DIDN'T EVEN TELL US THESE OTHER MEDICATIONS WERE AVAILABLE. I had to learn of them from strangers in the neighborhood on facebook. It was unacceptable. Further - when I left a message saying I was needing extra oxygen tanks because I was scared the power outages would leave us stranded with no oxygen for my mom, they never called back. I had to call them and say I had left 4 messages throughout the night asking for various types of help and to discuss oxygen and no one responded. Again, not acceptable. I was also told by a nurse there that my mom would be steady in her pain through the night - but night we had to rectally administer morphine and benadryl every hour on the hour and she couldn't have been more dead wrong even though she was their "most experienced nurse". My mom was in pain and it didn't have to be this way. Stay away. read more

I have a hard time finding adequate words to describe the loving care provided by Hospice Austin. They provided care for my friend for almost a year, first in her home and later in a skilled nursing facility. I was extremely impressed by the professionalism and compassion. The staff spent extra time with her when she felt fearful and anxious, providing emotional and spiritual care that helped her through the most challenging days. They were responsive to her needs, easy to reach, and kept her as pain-free as possible. They administered an abundance of love, respect, and dignity every step of the way. I wouldn't refer Hospice Austin to my worst enemy, this company has no compassion for a family that is already going thru ALOT! They treat you badly. My mother had a fall n fractured her hip because of that her pain increased and meds were over given that week on only ONE med of many more, then all the sudden they wanted to treat us like drug addicts and they became medicine police instead of care givers, all respect and compassion of any sort from this company was out the window. Her attention to detail, her knowledge and her genuine desire to be here and help was beyond measure. We felt we had a friend in her. The other nurses, social worker, chaplain were all wonderful. Kathleen came by a few times a week, basically whenever we needed her, and was always checking in with me by phone to see if there was anything we needed. I wanted to update my review since my father has now been on service with Hospice Austin for six months. Six months of continuous service allows lots of opportunities for a business to make a mistake, but Hospice Austin staff continues to go above and beyond to provide him excellent care. I want to specifically mention Jane his Aide and Griselda his Nurse. Jane has been tremendous. There have been times when he needed family assistance, and she immediately calls us (which is great b/c my sister lives only 5 minutes away from him). My father is so appreciative of Jane's care, her manner, and her dependability. She is just amazing. We also so appreciate Griselda. It is comforting to have a nurse who is so familiar with his care, immediately responds, and keeps the family informed. My father really likes her, as well. We could not be happier with the care he is getting, and are so appreciative of their staff during this time. read more

I so desperately wanted to love Hospice Austin. They made it difficult, if not impossible to do so. Without writing a very long post (which it would take to explain everything) I will say that we experienced difficulty at every level: with administration, with nurses, doctors, and finally at Christopher House, where our dad died. A few months later we met with the Executive Director and two of her staff members to tell them of our ordeal. They compassionately listened and sent us a letter of deep apology, but none of that will change the fact that our father's death was much more traumatic and painful for her than it had to be. We will have to live with that memory forever. I'm now looking at hospice care for my mother, and while I'm aware that no place is perfect, I wouldn't dream of using Hospice Austin again. read more

I cannot say enough about the level of caring and support Hospice Austin provided us for nearly an entire year. My father had a very slow-moving prostate cancer and a long, steady decline. Hospice Austin provided wonderful support with nursing and also emotional support through their chaplains and other volunteers. Every person on our team was caring and compassionate, but a special thanks to Tania, our Case Manager, who made sure we had everything we needed and quickly responded to questions and needs from the entire family in a caring and timely manner. read more

I support the non profit structure of Hospice Austin. But, in my late wife's dying hours they failed us miserably. All for financial reasons, they denied her admission to Christorpher House for inpatient care. I spent hours with a uncaring nurse who said she had to take orders from administration. Problems also with pain medications. I gave them two stars instead of one because my wife was admitted the night of her death to Christopher House and the staff there are excellent and caring. Also, I was pleased with my mother's care while she was receiving care in a skilled nursing facility. read more

Hospice Austin took amazing care of my mom the seven weeks she was on hospice. Because of them, we were able to spend quality time with mom. Not only did they provide her care, but provided care of the family as well so that we could provide support and care for her. We were so impressed with Dr. Galusha who was amazing, so patient, gentle and knowledgeable and she answered all of our numerous questions. My mom's main nurse, Ginny was also top notch and would spend a long time on our visits, working closely with my mom and making sure the family understood everything that was going on. Mom and dad thought she was so sweet! All the other hospice staff, including the people that answered the phone, delivered equipment, the social workers, everyone was state of the art. They are an amazing organization and I truly believe that everyone that works there does so because of the passion in their heart. read more

Hospice Austin was so helpful to me. My husband was diagnosed with ananplastic thyroid cancer at the age of 57. There is no cure for this disease. Thanks to Hospice Austin my husband was able to die comfortably, at peace, and with dignity in our home with his family, friends and beloved dog. This would not have been possible without all the the great support we received from Hospice Austin. I think their many years of experience is what made the difference. Not only did they help with my husband's physical and spiritual pain; but they helped me and my family with our emotional pain. Hospice Austin staff was always available to night and day. I took advantage of two of their many grief programs that enhanced my ability to grieve appropriately. I never felt alone when Hospice Austin was supporting me. I recommend Hospice Austin to anyone that may not be around in the next six months. I would give 0 stars if it was an option. Poor care nursing and physician care while there. My loved one died the day the hospice physician Dr. Galusha was trying to discharge her from Christopher House because she didn't feel that she was sick enough to stay. Family chose to leave Christopher House by ambulance for better symptom management where she passed away peacefully 27 hours after admission to a nearby hospital. I would not recommend Christopher House. read more

I would like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to Hospice Austin for being there for my family. My experience with cancer was devastating and it left me feeling overwhelmed. I had never heard of hospice until her doctor mentioned it after telling us that they had run out of options for treating the cancer. At the age of only 27 (2013), I lost both my parents to cancer within a six month span so "unfortunately," I am now very familiar with Hospice. They were such a blessing to my family and I can't convey how supportive they were to us during my parents illness. With their guidance we were able to go through the deaths with a much more positive experience. We were fortunate to have Hospice Austin there to support us in this terrible situation and again, we'll be forever grateful. How do I even put into words the love and care that Hospice Austin Provided for our family. On 04/17/2017 I gave birth To my Son Noah ,through the whole pregnancy nothing was ever detected through sonograms or the basic genetic testing that they do at the beginning our pregnancy all we knew we were having a healthy child. But on 04/17/2017 the day he was born they noticed my son had a breathing problems it took about 10 weeks before our son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called Rett Syndrome which is Terminal in boys and at the time there was only about 20 boys who had ever been diagnosed with the disorder and were told none had lived passed the age of 2. In that we knew we could not give our son time but we could provide him a quality of life and make the best of that time. It is true when they say it takes a community to raise a child but its even more true when you have child who needs a lot of care. That's when Hospice Austin was introduced to us , we were blessed to have Katy and Bethany as his nurses. We live in Bastrop but they would come out every week to check on Noah and check on us as well , we had great social workers Rachel and Melinda who always gave us resources to get through , whether it was HEB gift cards, Bags of food during the holidays, or Even arranging a visit from Santa , they shared our sons story where donors can choose who they will provide Christmas presents for, Our family was picked and Noah and our whole family received Christmas gifts and they even repaired our roof , It was a blessing we couldn't get out much due to Noah's Illness so Christmas shopping and finances that year were hard but Hospice Austin made our Christmas Possible. We also got visits From Hospice Austin's Chaplain Brother Juan, who always prayed with and for us through all our challenges and got us through spiritually. On the morning of Aug 22, 2018 our sweet Noah passed peacefully at home. Hospice Austin Came to be by our sides allowed us to be with Noah for about 14 hours we were able to bath him and spend those last moments saying our goodbyes. They never rushed us or pressured us and they helped make all the calls for us to the funeral home so we could just focus on those moments which helped so much. Hospice Austin Was god Sent , They continue to be a part of our family and forever will be a part of our family , they helped us give our Noah a quality of life , In all of Noahs pictures he is smiling and that Reassures me we gave him the best life possible and god sent us the help and the hands we needed to get through. Hospice Austin was such a horrible experience, I have never experienced anything like it in my life! They are way too big, they complicate things far beyond reason. The right hand does not know what the left hand is doing? Nothing was simple with them so we just became exhausted from all of the confusion. Everyone wants to "talk" about what they can do, but no one did any "hands on" helping. Too big of an organization, too little real hands on care, everyone you call for help tells you to call someone else? it was ridiculous! We got to a place with them, where we just wanted our peace and quiet and them "out" of the picture completely. They had a such a constant turnover of employees. First, the Director of Nurses quit, so a new Director of Nurses came in that was unbelievably stressed, and took it out on everyone around her. She could not delegate authority or trust anyone else to do a single thing their way. She was a basket case and would return our calls meant for our Hospice nurse and try to control everything that went on. She was unbelievably stressed and rude! Then our Hospice Nurse could not take the stress, so she quit too! Then our Social Worker quit and went to a new job. The new Social Worker came in and was only interested in her ego, and It was completely obvious! All she did was talk about "her" needs, not ours. After three weeks she still had not gotten back to us on the single item we said we needed help with? One too many employees that did not have time to help with "hands on assistance." We finally gave up! We knew it was time to change Hospices! We went straight to Girling Hospice in Georgetown, as we found out that they are much smaller but far better staffed. The employees are fabulous, and we got hands on help immediately! It was like a complete turn around. The staffing is much more experienced, and each person that we worked with was hands on help for us, out at our home, actually physically looking at the problems and issues, and getting help out to us immediately. Within 24 hours, our cancer patient who had very end stage cancer actually starting feeling better again. We found out he had three things wrong with him that Hospice Austin did not even notice. Then they set up respite care for me and I will always be grateful. This was the type of help we really needed. A Hospice that truly cared! I will forever be grateful for their stepping in to a very difficult situation and changing our lives completely. We were to the very end of our rope! read more

Hospice Austin answered our prayers for end of life care for our mother. We were a bit set in our ways since we had cared for her for years, but found our team of caregivers extremely accommodating. They provided everything we could possibly need, and answered every call and question thoughtfully and promptly. The most surprising gift was the level of compassionate care we all received during this most stressful difficult time. The end of mother's life was a peaceful, painless, drift away in her own home, surrounded by family prepared for all that follows. We can never thank Hospice Austin enough. read more

Social workers who offer support when you don't even know the right questions to ask and volunteers to help, to visit, to listen. It was so comforting and reassuring that there was always someone to take care of my husband's every need, and assure, support and comfort me. We had no idea that hospice provided so many services. Our father's care, indeed care of the entire family, was excellent from the admissions nurse on. We would like to especially thank Marcy, our nurse and Courtney, our CNA. They were both compassionate and superb at their jobs. We never felt they were in a hurry, they took their time to answer all of our questions. The equipment and supplies came next day and were removed promptly afterward. The nurse who came the night of our father's death (in the middle of the night) was kind and considerate. She offered to stay with us as long as we needed her and made all the necessary calls for us. I cannot say enough how impressed I am with Hospice Austin and would definitely recommend it to anyone in this situation. read more
