This was the last thrift store of our outing and the one I found the most great pieces of clothing at. This is defiantly on the higher end of thrift stores we visited. Instead of having to hunt for the good brands they are all good brands. Just note you are paying the price for not having to hunt. I found a nice summer black and white dress for $15, a pair of Ann Taylor Navy blue slacks in petite for $14, a pair of Athena leggings that weren't too long for also $14. Finding petite clothing is always a challenge for me. And since I'm vertically challenged I need the petite clothing options. What I came home with was all high quality pieces of clothing and good brands, but I walked out of there spending over $40. That's steeps for 3 pieces of clothing compared to the other stores we were at. The clothing is pretty well organized. They have 4 clearance racks. 2 outside the front door and 2 in the back near the books and furniture. I did find 2 dresses that I liked and 1 was a great fit, but it wasn't as nice as the black and white one I got so I saved some money and passed on it. It wasn't as nice half off and would have been $8 a better deal than the black and white one. I have to pick and choose what I buy as I want to budget my money and I don't need all that clothing. They had a whole rack of Disney clothing. Pants with Mickey Mouse on them and all different of Tshirts. There was a whole rack of swim wear, I didn't look as I got two suits at another thrift store and I don't even need 2 new suits. One would have been fine, but they were so cute and great deals that I got both of them. Next to the dressing room is a huge round rack of authentic wear, unfortunately it wasn't set out by size so you had to hunt, which wasn't that fun, but I did come out with a pair of leggings so it wasn't too bad. They had Rothy shoes but they only had size 6, but it was for only $30. What a steal compared to their online price. They had another brand but, those were only size 7. If you were one of those sizes they were a steal. I didn't bring socks so I couldn't try on the shoes, opps. They had a nice pair of hiking boots that could have been perfect for me, Keens. I really wanted to love the, but due to they were $30 with out socks I didn't want to risk it. Plus they were missing their insoles. Next time I'll bring socks. One huge perk an a shiny star for them as they had two dressing rooms. No bathroom, but dressing rooms which is more important if you are looking to buy clothing that is a bit pricy that you don't want to dump them when you get home. Parking is a chore. There is a private lot connected to the strip mall, but they also have meters. To add to that the meter maid was walking around giving tickets as we were leaving. They do have big sign as you enter the store that parking is paid. That is a dower or this store as the other stores all had free lots. All in all I would go back to this thrift store. I love they have dressing rooms and their selection of clothing. They had other item such as books, houseware, furniture, ect. read more

I love this place. It's upscale as thrift shops go. the last time I was there he got to heavy cotton summer shifts I will wear out, and a pair of fry boots that are fire. There's a delight in every aisle. You do need to watch the parking meters and make sure you are coined up! read more

New location. They used to be close to Whole Foods. Now they are in the strip mall across from Kaiser, a short walk from the gas stations, Trader Joe's, and Pet Food Express. The strip mall is metered parking, but if you look carefully there are often meters that have ten to twenty minutes remaining. Enough time to take a look. I think the prices are fair. For a smaller store, plenty of women's clothing, not a lot of men's clothing. I often look at the housewares, which are displayed nicely. read more

We worked with Hospice to donate furniture. The workers were on time and very helpful. Jaymar did a great job helping us understand how the process worked. Some items were taken to the store and some were taken to the land fill. He was very helpful and kind to work with. When we initially contacted the store it would have been more helpful for us to know everything needed to be packed and ready to load. I would recommend using hospice for donations but I would also ask exactly what they use in the store so it does not end up in the land fill. We wanted to give a cherry dining room table and chairs. They told us it would not fit in the store and would have to go to land fill. We really wanted to donate it to someone so they could use it. We will have to find another shop to donate it in the area. It is just too nice for the land fill. read more

Used to be a little slice of heaven. Suddenly severely overpriced in a cursive handwriting indicating it's the same loon getting greedy on the tags. You walk in and hear a cackle non stop from the backroom, from the fitting rooms you hear employees talking smack about each other. New hires have destroyed this legend and a new location won't help matters. read more

Holy cow, this is a marvelous place! I'm a thrifter from way back, and finding this place is pure joy. They have new things every day, beautiful current items, nice vintage furniture, good glassware and dishes. The volunteers are nice, and it goes to a truly wonderful cause. Great pricing here and great location. Everything is neat and clean. Staff is friendly. So much to look at in a small store and not overwhelming. I was able to grab a stack of blank & thank you cards, some childrens books, and some yarn all for $9. They had this beautiful antique Asian dining set for $2000 which I knew was well below the price of $7k it could go for, a gorgeous Persian rug for $800, some ornate wall mirrors I would've purchased if I had room, globes at $15 and golf balls at 25 cents each. The prices seem slightly higher than other Hospice locations and the sales/promotions are not as good as other stores. This thrift store moved to a new location. I got a coupon in the mail that said they were moving to a much nicer bigger location with more parking. Actually you have to pay to park for overpriced used goods. It really is a downgrade from their previous location. I took a carload of clothes there because it sounded like a great cause. They were a small size which most shops don't have. Allvwe're in great condition and some very high-end things. The following day I had another carload of clothes but before I dropped them off I wanted to know if my clothes sold. That was easy to do because they don't have any small sizes. There was nothing left except for one item and I was thrilled. The next carload went into donation. I am purging because I am moving and again I will see if my things sell before I donate the rest. Walnut Creek Hospice, Beware sells brand name jewelry at high prices with no regard for authenticity. I bought a small pin which they marked Christian Dior for 60 dollars. When my friends who has a real one and works in S.F. at the Dior store pointed it out as a Fake, I tried to return it for store credit. the new Manager at the store no returns and no accreditation given. I was floored, I said you just sold this to me with la christian Dior label and charged me 60 dollars for a fake piece of costume jewelry, actually worthless. He would not budge. I called several times to the district manger office who never returned my call. I never missed on of their events and spent in excess of 700. at this latest jewelry event. I will not be shopping at this store again. I believe they are losing on of their best customers. read more

I usually stop by hospice on my breaks at work. Not much to find but today seemed like a good day. There were two items I really liked! Got off my shift later than I hoped and really wanted to grab a pair of shoes for my mom before I hopped on BART. Online it says the store closes at 5, I got there at 4:07. When I approached the door, a woman coming out says "oh they close at 4". Thinking she was a customer, I continued to walk in to ask the associate a question. And had my fingers crossed that she didn't close the register yet. When I walked in, the woman and another person followed behind me into the store, yelling "HEY THEYRE CLOSED" I replied "I know I just wanted to ask her a question." Now, with three women staring at me, I felt embarrassed for wanting to ask the question about the two items I saw in the store earlier that day. The associate said, "Can you come back at 10am tomorrow?" With all three grown women staring at me, visibly upset. I replied "No, I will be out of town. I just- I nevermind. Sorry for offending you." I walked away feeling really uncomfortable, and genuinely sad. Like I was scolded by a parent or teacher. I work in retail. I know it's a pain when someone walks in at the last second. But I didn't expect three grown women to look at me like I stole something or crossed some sort of line. read more

I just want to weigh in on how much I LOVE this thrift shop (Walnut Creek location). Whenever I'm in there, everyone is exceptionally nice. And I go in a lot. I both shop and donate. Prices are beyond reasonable and their merchandise is top notch. (I know from experience how picky they are in what they'll accept.) I'm a jewelry-making hobbyist, so I often buy jewelry there that I later modify or make into something else. I also take ceramic pieces that I've made for them to sell. I'm grateful to able to give back in this easy way. read more

Frankly, since I'm never here for their end of the month 50-75 percent off sales this place has sorta diminished in my eyes. They're a thrift store first and foremost, so quality, brand name and the state of the items don't always factor in. However more often than not I find a cute sweater or purse. I really love their shoe section, but sometimes I find shoes that are torn or broken and they're still selling them. In the end my only major negative of this store is that their prices have gone up and if you're not coming in during sale time, you feel overcharged. read more

This was a great little thrift shop that my friend took me too. I scored a designer dress for $10 and a Columbia hiking top for $8. The store lay out was nice and the dressing rooms were well kept. The woman working there was super friendly. If I lived closer to Walnut Creek this would be my go to thrift shop for donating my stuff and for buying great items. Some might find it strange that I've given 5 stars to a place I hope no one ever has to visit. I don't. This review is specifically for Bruns House in Alamo, but could be attributed to any of the hospice locales in the county. I believe that one must be recommended to be transferred to Bruns, though I may be wrong. When someone is sick, a hospital is a place of hope. A place where doctors and nurses can take care of you and make you better. When someone is terminally ill, a hospital becomes little more than an elaborate prison. A prison where the patient must compete with others for the nurses' and doctors' time. A prison that they can't escape, and at the most extreme, a starchy white prison where they will pass on. Being told that they are moved to a hospice, a person must then fend off two alternating arguments. On the one hand, they are being sent to a place to die. But on the other, they are being sent to a place that will comfort and take care of them in their final days. Bruns House is a marvelous hospice located in a residential area of Alamo. It's unassuming, and since the address isn't advertised online, purposely kept hidden for patients' privacy. It's a converted ranch-style home with six bedrooms, ensuring that there are never too many patients for the facility's and nurses' capabilities. Food is provided, and there is ample room in the kitchen and living room areas for family members. Many of the people who work here are volunteers - some are social workers, some are nurses, some are clerks. No one shouts or screams, or scolds patients for wanting too much. They are friendly and calm, helping those suffering from life-ending illnesses find comfort in their final days. Bruns is ideal for those people who would like to be at home but because of medical reasons must have supervision 24/7. It is a complete 180 from the scary prison of a hospital. My father passed away this past Sunday, and I am so thankful he spent his final days in such a wonderful and caring place. Although I can't say it would be nice to go there, given the circumstances, if you or a family member has been given a limited amount of time left and you cannot be brought home, there is no other place in the world you should want to be. read more

Good points and bad points. On the upside, the Thrift Shoppe occasionally has some amazingly nice items. They clearly get a lot of donations from local estates (they are near both Rossmoor and John Muir Hospital) and the families of people that the Hospice of the East Bay has nursed through their last days are happy to donate to them. Their vintage sales sometimes feature unusual and highly collectable items. That said, their prices can border on outrageous. While overall I am a big supporter of Hospice of the East Bay and support their service to the community (I used them when a family member was passing, and have donated items to them on a number of occasions) the thift shop seems to have completely lost sight of the fact that it is -- wait for it -- a *thrift shop*. They should just change the name. They seem to think they are a vintage boutique in the pricest section of San Francisco instead, or a destination antique shop. They want to squeeze the absolutely last possible dollar out of every item, and they think there's one born every minute. Yes, I know their mission is noble, I completely agree that it is noble (thus I am giving them three stars when my fingers are itching to click on two stars). But when you're shopping there as a customer, this can be really annoying. As long as you don't think of this store as a thrift shop, you're OK. Or, if you have a vintage store or a boutique, you could buy stuff here and mark it up a little bit for your own stock. But for quality items at thrift shop prices, go to the Garrett (in Walnut Creek, on 3rd Avenue, off North Main). They are associated with John Muir Hospital and get excellent donations and are not under the impression that they are a Nob Hill boutique. The Youth Auxiliary Thrift Shop on Vivian Lane in Pleasant Hill sometimes has great stuff, too. read more

A very good cause. My friend found some housewares, I got a book. Everyone went away happy. A good selection of accessories, books, clothes were hit & miss but that is the nature of the game. Return at a later date and who knows what you might find. A worthy stop. Plus, we stopped in on a day where everything in the store was 20% off, watch the sign outside for deals. p.s. Outdated Uggs? Last season's cargos? How about those now embarassing street sweeper skirts? Get rid of them here! Seriously, this place is the best place to get rid of gently used or secretly detested items that perhaps you or some member of your family thought would be perfect . I love coming here and unloading stuff ---plus I always find something -- like brand new hankies to tie around my dog's neck in red and turquoise! Actually they have some pretty good books too. More than anything though, it's nice to donate the items and know proceeds are doing someone some good. Oh-- and I recommend walking over to Whole Foods after dropping off some donations and doing some sample-grazing!! read more

I love this place! I always find little treasures, especially around the holidays. They are quite picky with what they put out, so for the most part, everything is pretty well taken care of by previous owners. I have bought three pairs of pants from this place that look completely brand new! It's one of my favorite places to peruse on my lunch hour. So I went over there again today and am finding the new manager has priced everything really high and doesn't do good sales like the last one. Bad for business! :( read more

I'm really sad... they have almost doubled their prices!! I have been a loyal Hospice Boutique customer since they moved to this location. In the last ten years, I have purchased many, many items of clothing, jewelry, a vintage Metlox Poppytrail Dinnerware set, books galore, a vintage bedroom set, outfitted both of my childrens first kitchens with RevereWare pots and pans, Pyrex bakeware, microwave ovens and cast iron skillets... This has been my go to store for many years. Due to my employment hours, I haven't been able to patronize them as often as I used to. However, my hours have recently changed and I needed a new pair of Navy Pants, so I was excited to be able to stop by this afternoon. I found a pair of pants, pricy at $8, but they fit so in my bag they went. Then I found several 100% cotton long sleeved tops, all the same good brand and in lots of different colors. I was APPALLED that they had them marked at $10 a piece! I know that they would have previously been priced at $5 to $6 a piece. Browsing through rest of the store, I found most of their items were grossly overpriced. Reading the recent reviews, it apprears that my beloved store has changed their pricing structure. Unfortunately, they have now priced themselves out of this loyal customer's budget. read more

I was informed by another staff member to ask the "manager" about a price, as she controls the pricing. The manager (young lady) was very rude and even the staff was making a face because they were embarrassed. As a committed Walnut Creek thrift store shopper, I think the triumverate of Walnut Creek thrift stores are: 1., The Garret, 2., The Hospice, and 3. The American Cancer Society. I don't like to buy new, and I'm in a career where I often have to look nice (not necessarily formal--this is California--but well dressed, if you see the distinction), and because of this I give Hospice five stars. When I'm looking for something relatively new, trendy, or dressy, I go to Hospice. Garret has a lot of awesome finds, but I can rarely just buy a t-shirt there (I'll find a great vintage skirt, or an awesome dollar-rack early-'90's blazer, but no basic, fairly modern, good-looking t-shirt). Hospice also has a larger sizes rack, which is nice for those of us in the larger sizes. They are kinda pricey, but it's worth it if you find something that, is, you know, $10 as opposed to $40. Even if somewhere else you'd find something that's $5 as opposed to $60. And at the very least, you're reusing (even if your shirt is marked down from $6 to $4--sorry to get all bleeding-heart liberal there at the end). read more

I've been to the other locations they have and this one isn't my favorite. Hardly anything for the younger crowd and take seem to have limited selection. Never found anything worth purchasing the one or two times I went. The Danville one is small but a lot of selection for clothes. I seem to have the most luck there. The Alamo one has a good selection of clothes and other items. Clayton one is limited for selection for clothes, but great for furniture. Martinez is hit or miss for me. Sometimes you find something, but not what you're expecting. read more

I've been coming to this shop for about a year now and I really enjoy it. Sometimes you have to look to find the treasure, but that's part of the fun. The staff is very sweet. It's also my favorite place to buy cards as they have amazing cards for any event prices at 50 cents. read more

Bruns house was the go between between being at our home and my husband passing. We weren't even there a day but the time there was a great respite for me and my husband. This portal to the next life creates such a level of inner peace and tranquility that I left feeling that there must be more than what the physical plane dictates. The people were very supportive emotionally and accommodating to my needs. I had planned on spending many days there waiting for my husband to pass. The garden was very homey but comforting. The spiritual and counseling that is offered is far beyond anything that you could get in a hospital or nursing facility. These volunteers and social workers etc are experts in this area of dying. They are the most knowledgeable about the death process and even could tell that my husband was close to passing within the next few hours when I felt it was going to be much longer. With societies feeling that talking about death is kind of a taboo it is very supportive to be in a place where you don't feel your all alone dealing with this situation. I was given the tour and saw a very accommodating kitchen , garden etc. IF your looking for a place to deal with the death process and are open to receiving extra love and attention to you and your family then you have your little bit of heaven on earth. The more open you are to receiving their love and support then the more they are capable of giving to you and your family. having 24/7 allows you the complete freedom to follow your heart and visit your loved one anytime rather than the dictates of other facilities. so if your one of the lucky six that they accomodates count your blessings. read more

I was in this store last week and found a nice old knit throw rug for $25. When I went to check out I was told I couldnt buy it because it was being saved for their "travel event" (which is today). I came back today to buy it and the price is now $60. When I asked about it they simply told me they didn't know what to say, and the price would remain $60. That is so nasty... read more
