The training that each worker experienced as it pertains to bedside manner and just seeing a patient and a patient's loved ones was evident with every encounter. It is clear that they instill in their workers the importance of tenderness, thoughtfulness, and care in a very effective manner. My Review of Blue Star Hospice…read more Less than a year ago, my mother, who was nearly 98 years old and sharp as a tack, began showing signs that deeply concerned me. I contacted my mother's primary care physician's Office, and a Physician Assistant named Ann came to our home to evaluate her condition and offer guidance. It was an excellent visit. Ann was professional, compassionate, and sincere. She explained that my mother had entered the final stage of her life.My mother had developed a fear of taking showers and using her walker. She began asking simple questions about things she had always known. Her short-term memory seemed to have disappeared, although her long-term memory remained remarkably strong. Ann explained that there were services available that could help my mother remain at home instead of moving into a nursing facility. My mother's greatest wish was to spend her final days in her own bed, and I was fully committed to honoring that wish. Ann recommended that I speak with a hospice provider and suggested Blue Star Hospice of Katy, Texas. I agreed, and shortly afterward representatives from Blue Star Hospice came to our home. From the moment they arrived, I was impressed. They answered every question I had and even addressed questions I hadn't thought to ask. Most importantly, I felt a genuine sense of compassion, connection, and trust. I had no idea that Medicare would cover in-home hospice care. Frankly, I didn't believe it at first. Yet it was true, and I never received a bill. After paying taxes my entire life, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this valuable service was available. Blue Star Hospice worked with me to create a care plan that allowed my mother to remain comfortable at home. Several times each week, caregivers visited to help with showers and personal care. A nurse visited regularly to check my mother's vital signs, monitor her condition, and arrange for any medications she needed. The care they provided was outstanding. Over the next nine months, my mother developed a deep affection for the women who cared for her. Tanisha helped her with bathing and personal care, always treating her with kindness and dignity. Nurse Penny carefully monitored my mother's decline and consistently prepared me for what was ahead. She explained what signs to watch for, how to handle difficult situations, and how to use medications properly to keep my mother comfortable. As the months passed, my mother's heart function declined significantly. Blue Star Hospice arranged for an oxygen concentrator, which helped her breathe comfortably and prevented the panic that often comes with shortness of breath. Without Blue Star Hospice, I would have been completely lost, and my mother would have suffered unnecessarily. Each week brought new challenges as my mother's health slowly declined. Nurse Penny was incredibly accurate in preparing me for what to expect. During every visit, she explained the next stages of the process and guided me through each change. When my mother was nearing the final weeks of her life, Nurse Penny told me what would happen and what signs I would see. Everything unfolded exactly as she had explained. Blue Star Hospice also provided a comfort-care medication kit that was kept in my refrigerator. During my mother's final 24 hours, that kit became invaluable. The medications helped keep her peaceful and comfortable during her final moments. Without them, I believe she would have suffered. Just as importantly, having those resources available gave me peace of mind. I knew my mother was comfortable as the time came for her to leave this world. As a caregiver, I cannot overstate how much Blue Star Hospice helped me emotionally and mentally. Caring for a loved one at the end of life is exhausting. There were many times when I felt overwhelmed and emotionally drained. Knowing that I could reach someone at Blue Star Hospice at any hour, whether through a home visit or a phone call, made all the difference. Whenever I had concerns about medications or symptoms, they were only a phone call away. They always knew exactly what to do and were willing to guide me through every situation. On the night my mother passed away, I called Blue Star Hospice. They immediately told me what steps to take and informed me that someone would come to the house to examine her and complete the necessary paperwork. Just as they had throughout the entire journey, Blue Star Hospice handled everything with professionalism, compassion, and dignity. I am profoundly grateful to everyone at Blue Star Hospice. Without their support, guidance, and expertise, I do not believe I could have successfully cared for my mother at home during her final months. Our mother was in this facility for a little over 2 months and we could not leave soon enough. She…read moreneeded some extra care and the facility stated they could handle but as soon as mom got in the door and they had our money they suggested 'Hospice Care', this way they could have her there and do as little as possible, which is exactly what happened. A few of the girls were caring and knowledgeable (about 3), but others did not know and/or were not properly trained to handle a peg tube, and other, creating some accidents and unneeded stress among other issues! Outsiders even told us that there were better places and to get out as soon as possible. Management made promises and of course they want to get you in the door but buyer beware, once you are in you better be there just about every day to check in or who knows how your loved one will be handled or treated. They keep surveillance cameras for their benefit but won't allow you to have any - wonder why? Oh, they are nice enough and rapidly made changes and kept our monies instead of acting in a more professional manner after saying might give back if another party moved in. Well the other party was in within the day and no monies were refunded. All in all they are one big smiley face that's not so kind with not so well trained staff for the ones really needing the care. There are many other wonderful places that truly care. We know and have found one now with a night and day difference. So if you are considering this place do not be misled by the presentation - Beware!

My grandmother was admitted here for short term rehabilitation after a stroke. She was supposed to…read morestay about 20 days, but we chose to transfer her early because we did not feel she was receiving the level of care she needed. She became paralyzed on the left side of her body and came here specifically for therapy and rehabilitation to regain movement. During roughly 13 days at this facility, she only received therapy a few times. It reached the point where my family had to step in and do much of the work themselves like massaging her, helping move her limbs, applying lotion, changing her socks, and trying to keep her comfortable because staff did not seem to be attentive to these basic needs. For a rehab center, this was extremely disappointing. My grandmother is diabetic, non verbal after her stroke, and fully dependent on caregivers. We were told she would be checked every six hours, but this schedule did not feel appropriate for someone in such a vulnerable condition. She spent long periods bedridden and developed significant discomfort, especially from not being repositioned frequently. Watching her in pain was heartbreaking. There were also interactions with staff that felt unprofessional and dismissive when we asked for help or clarification. Instead of compassion, we were often met with rude tones or comments that made it seem as if our questions were an inconvenience. This made it very hard to trust that our grandmother was being treated with patience and respect. We also observed other concerning situations in the facility. For example, we repeatedly saw residents sitting uncomfortably in wheelchairs without assistance, including two residents who had to push each other because staff were not helping them. These kinds of things raised serious concerns about overall attentiveness and staffing. To be fair, not everyone here was uncaring. Michael, Wanda, and Becky consistently showed kindness and compassion toward my grandmother, and Wanda helped arrange additional care and testing when we voiced our concerns. We are truly grateful for them. Unfortunately, not all shifts had staff like them, and care depended too much on "who was working that day." Based on our experience, I would not recommend this facility for loved ones who cannot advocate for themselves or who are fully dependent on staff for movement and communication. Vulnerable patients deserve consistent, gentle, and attentive care, not minimal check ins and families doing the majority of the work. We ultimately transferred my grandmother to another center, where she is finally receiving the care she needs. I hope this facility seriously improves staff training, professionalism, and basic patient care, because the people who live here deserve better.
