My great friend brought me here and I am finishing this review after well lets just say many visits! One reason he gets the adjective "great". I am addicted to the ragoon and the Pineapple fried rice! The wontons are so light and crispy and love the sweetness of the creamy filling. I was so surprised I like the raisins in the Pineapple fried rice and it is a great compliment with the nuts, pineapple and I prefer shrimp. My second favorite is the pad thai, after reading reviews I choose the mild plus cuz I like to be able to actually taste the food. I had a sample of the Paneng(?) curry but have yet to bite the bullet and order it for myself. Service is always excellent with the consistent group of women who are there. read more

BEWARE PRICE GOUGING! Ordered lunch carry out, they didn't specify that they don't offer lunch prices for carry out, but realized after I picked up my food and looked on their website. Called to ask about the portion size and prices (was charged for dinner, received lunch size) I asked since I was paying for dinner size if I could receive dinner portions (for next time) and they said no! Don't expect that from this place And like a lot of places they put ketchup to give it the color and tang instead of using tamarind sauce Crab Fries Rice: Maybe try their other fried rice. I spent a bit of time Thailand a few years ago, and while I was there I learned several valuable lessons: 1.) Booze produced in the "Golden Triangle" contains enough formaldehyde to embalm a brontosaurus. 2.) Thai food is some of my favorite cuisine on the planet. The layout of a city is an interesting thing. It's a near guarantee that the further one travels from the urban core, the integrity of an ethnic menu will degenerate by the mile. Kansas City is a little bit different. In the tradition of the now defunct Udipi, which provided stunning vegetarian, Indian fare in the heart of Johnson County, Hot Basil takes impressive advantage of their Overland Park, strip-mall, location to provide delicious and authentic Thai food just between the NTB and the Hobby Lobby. The Northern Thai province of Isaan has produced a godsend of a salad in Laab. Its made up of minced tofu, pork, or chicken, lime, mint, onions, etc... and served on a bed of cabbage. It's an extremely powerful flavor and I love it so. Very few of the Thai restaurants I've visited in the 'States offer this on the menu, and ones that do earn an extra gold star. Hot Basil brightened my day by not only offering Laab right there on the first page of the menu, but what hit the table was some of the best Laab I've eaten anywhere in the world. Period. The Panang Curry and the Gapow Moo were both delicious and ample on the plate as well. This is all stellar news for me, as I now have one great Thai restaurant to visit in each region of the city. If you are in the Northland, go to Tasty Thai. Downtown, Thai Paradise, and finally Johnson County appears on the charts with this shockingly impressive Thai eatery, run entirely by Thai people and located in Rosanna Square. Go to Hot Basil. Good company and good food! Once again, I had a a 5 star experience here. I got the Tamarind Chicken and my friend and I split the Native Soup (Gang Jued). The soup (bowl sized) was big enough for a meal but they gave us single serving cups so we could treat it as an appetizer. I was almost too full to eat the Tamarind Chicken--almost. The flavor of the soup was amazing and it had those thin, see through, bean thread noodles, bok choy and mushrooms... oh so good! Highly recommend sharing with everyone. If you have three or more people at the table go for the pot. I haven't seen the pot but I'm going to say it's sharing size. Bowl is perfect for two people though. They gave us a chicken or pork option. We chose chicken. I asked about the Tamarind Chicken, having never had it. She described it as being like sweet and sour chicken. I don't particularly care for sweet and sour chicken but I was pretty pumped from the Thai Tea that I was slamming and ordered it anyway. Also, we were taking forever looking at the menu and I felt that my time was up. Brandon and I were on a mission to order something we had never tried before and this was it. We both ordered medium spice... never go mild in a Thai Place.. I've learned this. He got the duck special. The Tamarind was really sweet (as discussed prior to my order). I could only eat a little bit, I was really full. The next day, after the rice soaked up the sauce, it was delightful. I think the Siam Chicken is my favorite main dish (excluding soup) to date. Ok, can't really argue about the food - it's decent Thai food. We've enjoyed it at each visit. However, the service staff can be problematic, testy, and they charge you (without telling you) for things like extra rice. Also, I used a credit card there and - within days, had to get a new credit card due to fraud. Once, I wouldn't mention. But we went there at another time, and - yep, the credit card we used had to be replaced due to fraud as well. Do I specifically blame them? I think the people here really know how to develop flavor, and the food comes fast once you order. I had super-high hopes for this little strip mall find. You never know what you're going to get and the kind of storefront, dining room and the area of town is no indication of if the guy or gal in the kitchen has it going. Pork Gapow ordered hot, and it was. But not the sort of "lets bring the dude to his knees kind of hot," but proper. I eat authentic Thai in Queens and NYC *alot* where native Thai friends dine (Yelpers I'm friends with) so I know how it's supposed to be. Came with a nice runny egg on top which is completely to my liking. The meat was tender, moist and bursting with flavor, bits of random heat in red peppers and Thai Basil leaves departing wonderful flavor. Could have been a 5-star plate but the kitchen--almost... almost... but the kitchen got way, way, way carried away with the salt. Did I use "way" enough times to indicate how salty? To the point it seriously detracted from the dish. As in, unhappy. I'll mention I'm not shy with the salt at home. I cook, alot, and had I been serving this to my family I would have either been apologizing or digging one of my daughter's awful box pizzas out of the freezer. Pleasant wait staff, attentive, clean room, OK atmosphere, quick service. Everything to hit 4 or 5 stars. Giving them 1 or 2 stars wouldn't really be fair but could be justified. Hey there, Kansas City! Thanks for feeding me! Not wanting to deal with hotel food this week, I popped on over to Yelp to see what the locals were chewing on. After some research and some great recommendations from a Talk string, I decided on Hot Basil Thai. The reviews all pointed to their Pad Thai, which was fortunate because that is my go-to dish at any new Thai experience. I called them up, ordered my carryout, and within 10 minutes I had my grub in hand and was on my merry way. Now, since I didn't dine in, I can't say too much about service. However, I will say that the interior was clean and intimate, and the overall atmosphere would lend to an evening of tender words and spicy noodles. Yeah, it's in a strip mall, but at least it isn't a seedy strip mall. The food was great, but I had a unique problem. See, back home in St. Louis, I work right next to another great Thai place, The Thai Kitchen, and I LOVE their Pad Thai. Luck would have it that the Pad Thai that I got from Hot Basil Thai was nearly identical to the one I would get back home. Am I complaining? Nope. Was I upset? Not in the least. It was just the equivalent of leaving your favorite golf club at home, and ending up borrowing Tiger Woods' favorite driver--and then learning it's the exact same kind that you left at home. Yeah, it's great, but you were hoping to tee-off with Zeus' lightning bolt... To sum up, Hot Thai Basil was great. I will definitely go there again to keep working my way down their menu. I'm a bit torn because the food was ultimately quite good. But the service was not awesome. I'm also not particularly motivated to make it down here because I office in the same strip as Thai Place on 87th, which I find outstanding, but I think it's important to try all the Thai food places before settling on a favorite. This week I made it to Hot Basil and Fo Thai. The place was packed for Friday lunch. No surprise. It's well-rated here. But, after 10 minutes of waiting for a table (not bad) we were ignored for 15 minutes (bad). We then watched a table who had come in after us get waters and have their order taken. I looked across at my friend: "Five more minutes and we are out of here." Four minutes later a waitress showed up at our table and with no apology for our wait, took our order. Food was delicious. Period. But if I had been someone on a lunch hour hoping for a quick bite - I would have been burned. Since it was a leisurely Friday lunch with a friend, we just grinned and bore it. Ugh, I hate giving a rating this low, but I feel it's the most accurate on how I feel about the place. I ordered a lunch carryout order during the week of chicken Pad See Ew. It's not that it was bad - it wasn't- it's just that I've gotten much more and better food for a slightly cheaper price. Here, my dish consisted of 80% noodles and 20% other ingredients. I ran out of the chicken and veggies early, and it was a bit bland after those main ingredients were gone. This is our go to place, not just for Thai, but for when we just need a break from cooking or we're too busy. We've been coming here since they opened and are familiar with some of the staff. They are fantastic! The food portions are generous and they are good about hitting your requested spice level. Their spring rolls are some of the best in town, and their curries are top notch. We normally get at least the green (spicy!) or the peanut, both of which have the most velvety consistency. Spicy basil beef and any of the noodle dishes are our go-to's, and never disappoint. And if you want something special get a Thai iced coffee...wooo! read more

Finally, a Thai place I love in KC! A friend and I decided to check this place out for lunch break. I used to live close to this place and drove by it almost every day from work but I never knew it existed...maybe a good thing to prevent my bank account from dwindling. I'm not saying Hot Basil expensive; I'm saying I might eat here a lot if I lived so close again. I ordered the Tamarind Chicken with their soup instead of the salad. In roughly 10 minutes food hit our table. The Tamarind Chicken had perfectly cooked tender chicken with bok choy in a sweet but slightly spicy tamarind sauce and a side of rice. It was very good with almost the prefect hotness for me. The soup was also good, but sweet, with tofu and sliced shiitake mushrooms. Our waitress was nice and attentive however a bit quiet which made her hard to understand in spots. She was very quick to refill our water which was nice on such a hot day. The building is small but nicely kept at least in the dinning room. I didn't visit the restrooms. They have stemware on the tables. This makes it look expensive but it is quite reasonable. It was annoying however trying to avoid making a mess from all the condensation from my glass. At one point, I was concerned of returning to work looking like I pissed myself. That could make a slightly embarrassing return. I would hope my coworkers would make it like an Adam Sandler and join the fun of wetting their pants too. Like I hinted earlier, this place is hard to notice so I'm glad Yelp pointed it out. They deserve to present that "Yelp loves us" stick on their door. Located in an Overland Park strip mall, Hot Basil Thai Cuisine is, by appearances, understated - with sparse decor and simple aesthetics. There is a small patio for outdoor seating with a view of the parking lot. Inside, the floorplan is open with two large dining rooms and a tiny bar. The lunch hour was busy, a sure sign of good food, and we waited a few minutes before being seated. Each lunch entree comes with a starter of soup or salad. Both are delicious but the peanut dressing that accompanied the salad is out of this world. My suggestions for ordering off the lunch menu - first off, the Pad Thai. I had the chicken Pad Thai and rated it one of the top three that I've had in Kansas City. Also, the Gapow is AMAZING. The dish includes your choice of meat (I chose beef) stir fried with Thai basil and bell peppers, served over rice with an egg fried over easy. I ordered the dish spicy, which paired well with the beef and fried egg. The service is fantastic and our food came out within 15 minutes of ordering, making Hot Basil a perfect place to go for lunch. Sometimes you have to go to the most unassuming places for good food. Went I'm for a take out order after this place was recommend from my coworkers. I'm new to town and its close to my work. I love Thai food, fresh chili peppers, and basil. I ordered, Thursday evening, had a 25 min wait? Ok. That was a minus in my book. So then the prices are steep also in my opinion. My entree, Pork Gapow, $14.95, plus tax was close to $17.00 bucks. Yikes. Strike two. This place is in a strip mall...?? Really? Yes, they serve wine on the menu. But come on, its not on the plaza. Anyway, food was good, hot, and I think I did wind up waiting like 30 minutes when it was all said and done. So I suggest you call ahead if you are picking up to go, and this will be just a treat place for me unfortunately, as I can't afford their steep prices...but food was pretty good and fresh. We live 25 minutes away (but it's close to my husbands work so take out on the way home can be convenient). I offered to send them a photo. Then the lady told me to not eat my dinner, save it and take it back another day for a new dish????? They declined the photo and went ahead and took a dollar off for the lack of basil. I went ahead and posted a photo of my basil-less fried rice bc I'm pretty sure they were saying they didn't believe me when I told them there was no basil. Thai food is also a Favorite of mine. The place has decent reviews on Yelp so I gave it a try while in Overland Park KS. It was close by so no complaints there. Another late evening out here already and so I got it to go. The service was OK they gave me a menu and let me sit at the tiny bar. The place is small as they say. I was a little disappointed to see the bus boy filling the water pitchers while his fingers were in the pitcher .. yes he had to dry them when he was done. I got Pad Thai and Chicken Satay. The Chicken Satay with Peanut Sauce was really good. The Pad Thai was OK. I prefer a more wet Pad Thai and theirs was pretty dry. Not enough sauce, but the chicken in the Pad Thai was tender and moist. Not sure if I would go back the WOW factor was just not there. I have not checked for other Thai restaurants here and maybe there is one better. If it is the only choice then I would go back and try something else. read more

Loved the filling 5/5 Tom Kha with tofu: we ordered medium spicy (being Indian and loving spice), it was spicier than a medium. 5/5 Pad Thai with tofu: so good! They are very generous with the tofu and veggies. 5/5 Panang curry: this dish comes with a side of rice. That's great for me because in every other Thai place I have been to, we have to order separately. Again we got medium spice; it felt better in this dish. It defiantly is a MUST ORDER! 5/5 Fried banana with ice cream: I didn't enjoy it too much only because of the fried bananas. We wanted to compare this little joint to our favorite Thai restaurant and they came very close. I ordered a similar dish to what I always order at the other place so I could have an accurate comparison. The crab rangoon were delicious but I think the Spicy Basil was just a bit more spicy than I expected. However, it was still very good even if I had to take sweat breaks here and there. The atmosphere and setup was a bit tight but that's to be expected. There was a wait but we were sat faster then originally projected. Halfway through our meal we had to wave down a waitress for more water especially since the dishes were spicy. My friend ordered the red curry who was very pleased with her choice. Showed up with a friend who wanted to have dinner. I just had thai iced tea and it was marvelous. My friend ordered the massaman curry as mild as possible and still found it had more kick than she was wanting... but liked it anyway. We came around 6:30 and got carried away having a truly wonderful visit with each other and sat there until 9:30pm. There's a lot to be said when you find a place that is comfortable and where you feel you can stay for a while. It's not a terribly big place and we were keeping an eye out in case the table was needed but it seemed to me like the place does a large amount of take out and not so much dine-in business. Well, walking up to the plaza I was first unsure where the entrance was located because blinds covered all the windows and doors giving the impression that they were closed. As I entered the restaurant I saw two staff members that only looked over at me but, never acknowledging my presence with words or gestures. It kinda made me feel like an unwelcomed guest. Finally, after approximately 1 minute and 3 seconds a young lady asked me, "how many?" In passing as she proceeded to walk around the corner. She did however, come back and sat me at a table. About the decor, the tables were layered with fresh and crisp interchanging brown and white table cloths then set with elegant crystal water glasses and matching white napkins but the floors, ceilings, and walls disrupted the 'elegant- fine dinning' experience they attempted to create. My waiters name was Jesse and he was professional and did a great job explaining the menu. I ordered the seafood yellow curry which came out fast, hot, and fresh. My dish looked great, smelled great and tasted even better. All in all, I will definitely return to the hot basil. read more

Wonderful food with a friendly and attentive staff. I had the Crispy Shrimp Stir Fry and it was one of the best Asian dishes I've ever had. My wife had the Seafood Pad Thai and she thought it great also. Most people around us ordered the spiciness level as Medium, and my wife did also.
