While there are definitely days when they do not have the particular items I'm looking for, overall, I have been very happy with their quality and options. My favorites are the vegetable puff and the paneer puff, as well as the mini pizzas. Also the chocolate truffle cake and the chocolate pyramid cake are amazing! The cake itself is light and airy, while the frosting is rich and chocolatey. The shop is small, but well organized, with the pastries displayed behind glass. I got my regular- the plum cake, we got the big one, the $10 cake, and made it a chai cake evening and it disappeared in an instant so much that I could not even take a pic ... The other items I like here are the various cookies and the vegetable puff. They do make cakes on order and carry an assortment of breads for purchase too. When we came back in to collect the cake, the girl at the counter said the cake contained eggs, which we both looked at each other and confirmed that we told the gentleman we ordered from that we wanted eggless. After some banter in the back, we told them we would buy another eggless cake along with some pastries for lunch and we would wait the 30 minutes for it. When I went to pay for jt, the gentleman I ordered from that made the error started to argue with me that I never told him anything, which I did as well as my fiance. At first glance, Hot Breads is a carb lover's paradise -- an assortment of colorful cakes and Indian pastries not found in most American bakeries. The entire room is just stocked with a variety of pastries to try. They serve a selection of cakes (whole or individual slices), panini's, breads, and (what looks like) pizza. I ordered the Tikka Chicken Plait for $4.59 before tax and it was OK. I ordered it because it said "Tikka" in front of it and it looked filling. I didn't expect it to be a bit dry but maybe it was sitting out for a while. It had a spicy and meaty taste to it that was a bit strong for my liking. I also got to try the Chicken Tikka Panini and it tasted the same except it had some vegetables inside. Overall, I don't think I will come back here again but it was fun to try something new. Maybe their cakes are better? Perhaps come here for dessert instead of for a casual lunch. I saw more people buy cakes than stuff sitting in the counter. Rudest and dumbest staff. Website clearly says if you want to place an order under 48 hours, call the store. So I call the store and before I've even said my entire reason for placing an order over the phone -she cuts me off and says order online. I tell her the system won't let me because I need it in 43 hours and not 48 hours. So she says well come to the store and make the order. I say I live an hour away why can't I just give the order on the phone as your website clearly states I can. She gave no reason and said "well just come in the morning". I once again said I can't and asked if I can speak to someone else (because I hear other employees in the back). She says there's no one else here and that if I want to make an order I have to come in store and there's no other way. Confession time: I've been remiss in not reviewing this quirky fusion spot sooner. In my defense, I'm always lured across the street to Shri Balaji Bhavan when I'm feeling like a quick "pure" Indian adventure. Blending deft European pastry skills with the mystery savory flavors of the former British colony, this spic-and-span shop with the very innocuous name offers an interesting niche on the already bursting at the seams diversity that is Hillcroft Avenue. I was introduced to the place by a review in the Houston Press many years ago (How many years, you ask? Don't go there.) and, on my most recent visit, I had the same thing as before: a chicken tikka pastry "pizza". I know it doesn't sound very good but let me fill you in: they take a fluffy buttery pastry (about the size of a drink coaster) and layer it with some delicious chicken tikka masala. Warmed up via the microwave and doused with some of the special chili sauce on the table, this makes for a light yet savory meal. Good stuff for about $3. They make traditional bakery items, too: cakes, cookies, pastries, and breads round out the assortment but I stumble in here for the "fusion" items. Because of its specialization, I have to be in a mood for Indian but not "too Indian". Yes, that last sentence makes almost no sense to me either. Sorry about that - but, when you just want to try something different without risking a lot of cash, try them out. You may be pleasantly surprised. My food buddy introduced me to this place and I feel bad that I will have to take a little longer to get used to the products here. Sorry food buddy, things will get better, I'm trying to like it. I first tried this "spicy cookie" and never having anything of this sort I do not know what to call it but the "spicy cookies". They were not bad, just have to get used to as it is, a spicy cookie. Sweet bread, I got a hold of a little 1 1/2 nicely packaged sweet bread which I think was a lemon bread or whatever the chunks that were baked in there, it was good! I imagined it as a real light, not dense like a fruit cake baked bread with bits of lemon (or were those oranges?) distributed through out. Customer service, friendly, not the stoic faces that I am used to seeing in my few visits to mid eastern businesses, I think I could get used to here, I was only caught off guard because I did not know what to expect. Masala cookies, that is what the spicy cookies are called. Thank you S. H. for plunging me into something new, the next batch of cookies are on me. The inside of here is a little small but it does what it's there for. I think I recalled about 3 or 4 round tables, I'll revise this review on my next trip back. I have been to this location multiple times through out the years. This bakery has a good variety of things. When they first opened everything was fabulous not so much anymore. The puffs are stale and the fillings are reduced and wrapped with more bread. The prices have also gone up slightly. The cakes on the other hand are for the most part delicious. Please keep in mind these are more Indian/British flavorings. So I only come for the little cakes when around the Hillcroft shopping plaza. I tried two of the pastries. I forgot the names, but one was the chicken tikka and something else. The pastries all looked the same and was hard to pick from. The ones we got were ok something we wouldn't get again though. It wasn't as butter/flaky as it looked. We did try one of the sweets like a cream filled horn. That was actually really delicious. Indian-flavor inspired savory and sweet bakery goods. My favorite bakery in the city when I'm in the mood for the flavor of India and the feel of a western country. My favorites are the goat and chicken tikka puffs. The filling is delicious and the puff is light and flaky. Their pizzas are homemade-style, small and mostly topped with Indian style flavors. I haven't tried too many desserts but suffice it to say I always get a pineapple pastry, even though I'd never even consider it one of my dessert choices. Today, I spoke with the owner who proudly informed me that they've been in the bakery business in India for the past four generations. What a disappointment. I have been wanting to come here ever since a friend brought me some of their Pav Bhaji and Mixed Fruit Cake. Both were delicious. I finally came back on my own and was buying for two. Everything looked good. There's a bunch of croissants, puffs, cookies, desserts, pizzas, etc on display for purchase. They are reasonably priced (from $2 - $4). Here's what I ordered and how it tasted: Vada Pav: The potato sliders were bad. The potato patties were very dry. I would say they were barely edible. The bread was the only good thing about the sandwich. I would've sent these back if I stayed and ate there. Bansuri Indian Food Corner has the best Vada Pavs in town and these do not come close. Pav Bhaji - This was a dish I was really excited to try because the first time I had it, it was good. I'm sorry, but this was just horrible. The Pav Bhaji was very paste like (as opposed to being a bit more liquidy) and all you could taste was coriander or too much garam masala (I think). The Pav Bhaji was very brown due to the coriander. Just plain unacceptable. It was very gritty and just not good. Palak Paneer Croissant - This was decent but again, the palak paneer was dominated by one spice. The croissant on its own was good but the palak paneer was bad. I know there's more than one spice used when you make this dish but this was bad. I hope this isn't how they always make it. Paneer Tikka Wrap - I assume they want this like a Kati roll. While it looks like a kati roll, it isn't nearly as tasty as the ones I've had in India, NYC and at Bombay Pizza Co. in Houston. I can't say it was horrible, it just wasn't very good. The paneer tikka mixture was bland. Again this was very disappointing. The only good thing I had here was the Mixed Fruit Cake. It's a nice dessert with fresh fruit and a whipped cream frosting. Very light and the cake is quite tasty. What a horrible experience here. I was expecting very good food and had bad food. Enough to make me not want to come back here. I really hope the food isn't like this all the time. I imagine the wraps aren't very different but I am hoping the other bad dishes were just misses today. One-star for the tasty mixed fruit cake. read more

You know, I think I like their buns better than their croissants. (Really, that's only a half - recently threaded at Aisha's* - eyebrow raise. "Ooh, she said 'buns'.") I didn't try any of the puffs, so I can't comment on those, although the egg puff should have gone home with me. For now, I can only imagine that it was perfect. Back to the buns. The breading is where it was at. It's dunkability/broth soaking factor in my soup for lunch the next day was lovely. Paneer was stuffed inside, so I was a supremely happy camper. The Chicken Tikka croissant was good, albeit a little crumblier than I expected. That's not a bad quality, just keep in mind if you are driving or jogging and eating, you'll have to brush off the crumblies. I also got a few cookies. I didn't want to seem too much of a glutton, so I stopped there. Half Moon Pista Eggless cookies and Jeera shortbread. Amazing tea cookies. If you like cumin, then definitely get the Jeera cookies. A little salty, a little cuminy, a little subtly sweet like a good shortbread. *I've figured out a worthwhile rationing/reward system to trying everything in the bakery; I'll stop by every time I get my eyebrows threaded two doors down. I won't become too much of a fatty, and the shock of my eyelashes being welded together from squinting during the short, painful threading session with be alleviated by treat. read more

I'll give this place a solid 3.5. This was the first time I've had Indian puffs outside of India and it wasn't half bad. They have a variety of flavors like the chicken tikka, paneer tikka, etc. They also have a bunch of other kinds of pastries (sweet and savory), cookies, and cakes. We ordered three of the puffs and they were pretty good. The crust was flaky and crunchy, while the inside filling was flavorful. But it did taste a bit dry and seemed to be missing something. I recall having super buttery puffs with delicious and spicy fillings in India. These were a just sub par. I also wish they served egg puffs (which has chunks of boiled eggs mixed with masala as the filling). Nonetheless, I will visit this place again to get my puff fixing in the future or try some of their sweet treats. read more

Hot breads is a cool place that combines two items that don't normally go together into one delicious mouthful. Like Peanut Butter and Chocolate make a Reece's, Crisp French Pastry stuffed with Indian Flavors can be double yummy. The buttery richness of the pastry only accents the flavors of the stuffing. The puff pastry is the least successful of the breads, but the croissants stuffed with potatoes and chilis (capiscum) are excellent, as are the saag paneer, the chicken tikka and the goat curry croissants. There are several small pizzas topped with chicken or goat and there are several kinds of sweet pastries. A complete case of cakes and tarts is nice also. A couple of hints: All of the cookies here are not sweet. There are salt cookies, cookies with garam masala spice and caraway cookies. They are dirt cheap and worth a check if you like the flavors of Indian food. I got some of the garam masala cookies and put them on a cheese plate and people went nuts! Nice mix. It is a bakery, but in the Indian sense of time, not the French sense. Don't go for breakfast. The staff of latins comes in to bake and the items start to come out about 9:30 AM. If you are there before 10 AM on the weekend, you will be the first customers. Do try the Masala Chai to go with your pastries. They do have sandwiches to go if you like; a curry chicken salad and several other kinds of Indian flavored sandwiches. It is so inexpensive that it is wirth a chance to try everything. It is a store front with 3 plastic table tops inside. Don't expect a lot of comfort. The staff is really very sweet and will indulge you if you have questions. read more

No way I could rate this place any less than 5 stars, especially since I stop through at least once and sometimes twice a week. Although this is a bakery, I have never tried any of their fresh cookies and pastries although the sweet aroma takes your breath away immediately upon walking through the door. They prepare a variety of baked goods but my absolute favorite things that everyone who visits here must try are the wraps. I usually buy a Veggie wrap $4.99 which is made to order and includes lettuce tomato onion mint chutney and cheese wrapped in a freshly hand rolled tortilla. Each wrap is served with a bag of lays potato chips and a small container of chutney. In addition to the veggie wraps, I usually order a few roasted chicken and spicy chicken wraps $5.89 to go. The place isn't very large inside but they do have a few tables available for those wanting to dine in. Along the counter, they have mini cakes for sale for $1.00 in various flavors including lemon (includes real lemon shavings), choco-orange (sounds like a weird combo but tastes great), dates and almonds, and choco chip. The owners are super friendly. I highly recommend anyone passing through to stop here and try a freshly made wrap. FYI-they accept credit cards for purchases greater than $10. read more

I love the combination of sweet and spicy, so I always enjoy the cookies here. They make some of them pretty spicy. The butter cookies with cayenne and cumin are like nothing I've ever tasted. Their savory items are great, too. Try the palak paneer puffs. It's a flaky hot pocket with spinach and cheese, but spiced Indian style. This is a family run business, the owner is extremely passionate about food, flavor, and an overall amazing person to work with! My husband and I love to order the keema (seasoned ground meat) puff and the coffee flavored cake. We had ordered our wedding cake from this bakery as well along with some of their cookies and biscuits to serve as refreshments with tea & coffee during our wedding ceremony. People could not stop talking about how beautiful the cake looked and how delicious it was.
