Due to the Hot Dog Charlie's in Cohoes being closed due to a fire, I decided to give this location a try. Knowing that, this location is just as good as the Cohoes one. In addition, the rolls were toasted and had good taste. Also, the mustard is phenomenal and matches perfectly with the hot dogs. Finally, the meat sauce is excellent. When you're stuck in Albany for work (no offense, but is there any other reason you'd find yourself in Albany?) and you want a taste of the local cuisine, when you ask your local colleagues where to go, they'll eventually wind up recommending Hot Dog Charlie's. Why? Because it's good local eats! Being that we were still in the height of the pandemic, we had to get takeout, and Hot Dog Charlie's was happy to oblige with two trays of dogs, one with chili, mustard and onions, and one with relish. And anyone who can eat just a few of these little things has got some crazy strong willpower! The dogs have the perfect snap when you bite into them, the relish was cool and crisp and tangy, the chili was smoky and dark, offset by the bright mustard and sharp onions. I saw the area was famous for mini hot dogs and decided to stop here because it was still open and close to our hotel. Small spot with a few seats inside. Cashier behind counter was cool and didn't mind that it took me a while to figure out what to order. After all was said and done, ordered 9 mini hot dogs with a variety of fixings. Something odd happened the other day. I walked into Hot Dog Charlies expecting a mediocre, yet wholly reliable, mini hot dog with meat sauce experience. It was time for second breakfast and I so happen to live in Rensselaer. Folks, when you live in the lovely city of Rensselaer, you might as well attempt to hunt your own food. I can count the number of eateries within city limits on one hand. Counting Stewart's. Perhaps because of this, the Rensselaer HDC gets away with a deviation from their standard meat sauce formula. And it was delicious. None of the raw spice grit found at other Charlie's locations. Just a pure, well mixed meaty spicy kick. With, what appeared to be, stewed onions. Off the mini dogs came copious amounts of grease. With the exception of the smoky dog (not my steez), everything about my second breakfast clicked. You should go here. I'm a downstate transplant to the 518 so when I was first introduced to the mini hotdog food cuisine of the 518, I wasn't impressed. But my born and bred 518 partner-in-crime has totally turned my opinion around on these little magical weenies. There's something about sharing a plate of 12 of these meaty, saucy, messy little dogs that's just so bad and so good at the same time. About the operation: It's located in a little sketchy strip mall with gigantic potholes next to a Subway. They make everything fresh while you stand there, and the staff always seems pretty friendly for slinging mini dogs all day long. They're fast and fresh, dogs made with speed and the fries are always piping hot and fresh from the fryer. I do love that about them. They have made the change from the Sabbrett all beef dogs to the local pork/beef variety of Hembold's, probably because Sabbrett wasn't selling enough of the minis to keep producing them. It was sad because I liked that HDC tasted different than Gus and Famous, but I've become accustomed to the change. The works gets you meat sauce, mustard and diced onion... ketchup is for fries people, not hot dogs (my biggest food pet peeve). The dogs are even better with some Frank's Red Hot drizzled on. I know some complain that their meat sauce is too runny, or too sharp, but I guess I don't have a sophisticated enough palate for such measures. In my tour de mini dog, where I ate HDC, Famous and Gus's, I found HDC came in second after Famous but ahead of Gus. Take it or leave it, that's my opinion. I tend to eat HDC's the most, as its closest to home and right over the bridge and I really like this place. One star taken from not being open past 7pm. Also it's good to note that you might want to have a roll of tums around after. read more

The little ones at Hot Dog Charlie's, with its vast empire of four stores reaching from Clifton Park to Rensselaer (I still shed bitter tears for the loss of the late-night Saratoga Springs branch), are all-beef Sabrett weenies, packed with savory goodness and a garlicky spiciness. Love it. The meat sauce does the trick but I shall deduct a single star (with a heavy heart) because it is a little runny and greasy compared to the magical beefy stuff that Gus's slops all over their hots up the river. "The Works" will also get you finely chopped onions and mustard - I like to add my own splash of Frank's Red Hot. If you aren't too cool for fast food, skip the Subway next door and take in this local alternative grease-pit for a true 518 experience. I grew up in Albany and go to Hot Dog Charlies everytime I( go back. All of the chains are the same and it's just dang good!
