So this may look like a mess but hear me out... this is the Garfield pizza aka lasagna pizza (appropriately named) & while it was a bit messy it was soooo good . Ive never tried a lasagna pizza before but now its something i crave randomly all the time lol. It pangs me to write this because Hot For Pizza use to be my jam! Since they opened, I hailed it as the best pizza in Richmond. But something has changed in their kitchen and what they served me last week was absolutely dreadful. My fave has always been the personal 8" pan with fennel sausage. It use to be full of cheese! I mean a super cheese pull and all. Last night there was hardly any cheese, sauce or sausage for that matter. It happened a time before but I thought maybe they were having an off night. Nope, they just stop putting love or should I say the "Hot" in their pizzas. I told person running orders out about my disappointment and was gaslit like what I received was acceptable and he refused to remake it. They gave me a refund instead. It may have been one of the owners or management that told me maybe it sat too long but it was piping hot. As if that would make all the toppings disappear lol. The guy was super rude to me as well. I seriously hate leaving these kind of reviews and I think it's important for people to know this place has changed. I will never return or recommend. Since you asked....I tried to call and place an order. I called them Thursday 12:23pm and got no answer so I thought maybe they are busy and I moved on. Called back on Saturday at 5:41 and again at 5:44 and finally accepted they just don't answer the phone. I was really looking forward to something different. The workers/crowd here who hang outside at night and even during the day have a reputation for harassment- a friend of mine was followed home one night and I haven't had comfortable experiences with them either often they will whistle or follow me- I've even had one block me from getting out of my car. Tried Hot for Pizza for the first time last night (Wednesday) and was pleasantly surprised! I'm not a huge fan of vegan pizza usually, but have had to limit dairy so I wanted to see what they had to offer... they did not disappoint! The vegan pizza here is sooooo good. I got the Temple of Boom vegan style, YUM!!!! Best vegan cheese I've ever tasted, nothing like the fake stuff you can buy. I've got to imagine they make it themselves. Hot for Pizza deserves all the hype they get. My only regret is taking so long to order from them. They opened last summer, and I just placed my first order a few days ago. I ordered delivery via their website this past Monday. I like that they don't use one of the major delivery providers, and they have a flat delivery fee of $5 -- no weird service fees to consider. My food was estimated to take 65-75 minutes to arrive, but it actually only took 40. I was impressed. I purchased two medium-sized pizzas: their white blend and the lasagna pie. Both were good in their own ways. I liked the white quite a bit (feta and provolone? yes!) but next time would say light on the garlic. It's rather potent. I think I preferred the lasagna if I had to make a choice of favorites, though I wish it had pasta noodles on it too. It was more like a meatball pizza than lasagna. Nonetheless - both were quality choices and reasonably priced. I want to try the regular cheese next time. I think what wowed me the most was their dough. The crust is so buttery and just flat out fantastic. And I'm usually not a fan of crust. Since they work off that incredible base, their pies are just elevated even more. HFP also sells salads and sandwiches. One of these days I'll try them, too. All in all, my first impression was that this is a spot that will become a mainstay in the Richmond pizza scene. read more

This small restaurant is a loud little spot. On a not terribly busy night, there's loud music, staff having animated conversations, and more music from the kitchen. Add all that to a tight space and conversing is not easy here. Quick side note: the restaurant is Van Halen themed. Not one Van Halen song was played. But it's not about the decor because you can get past that if the food is great. But it's merely OK. We ordered two pies, one with extra cheese and one with some meats and extra cheese. To the kitchen''s credit they give it a proper bake. The crust is cooked appropriately and the cheese in nicely browned. The crust holds up nicely through the meal, never becoming soggy or unstructured. Lots and lots of cheese too. But the problem is the sauce. It's simply wrong. It's seems more like a garlicky marinara than a traditional pizza sauce. This would be nice on a bowl of pasta where it's the primary flavor but on pizza it's overpowering. The flavors of the meats I chose--prosciutto, thick cut bacon and pepperoni--should be easily picked up flavor-wise. But I can't taste any of them. They are absolutely overpowered by the strong sauce. What you end up isn't bad, per se. I certainly ate it. But it's not great either. It seems off. And in a town with a lot of pizza options, not being great may be a problem. Service is pleasant but not always attentive. We need to flag our server down for refills rather than having them proactively filled. People are busy chatting. So it's an OK pizza joint. But not worth a special trip unless you want marinara on the pizza. read more

Omgggg. I'm hot for pizza for sure. Decided to stop by here one day because I was cat sitting nearby and hungry for take out. I'm always looking for new pizza places in RVA because I feel like it's not our strength. My favorite one in 8 1/2. I got a white pizza which I saw someone on Yelp complain was "too garlicky" so I knew it was right for me. I showed up too early to pick up my pizza but the staff was friendly and I enjoyed looking at all of Bre photos on the wall. It feels like a bar. I saw a picture of the Garfield pizza online today, knew they had vegan cheese, so I convinced my crew to order some goods from here for dinner. At my house, it's a Friday night tradition to get pizza. I've tried probably 20 different places around RVA but for some reason waited 6 months too long to try this place. We ordered Buffalo wings, a bbq chicken pizza, and the van Zuylen pizza. The wings were huge and perfectly sauced. Could've been a big more crispy but, to be fair, we did get take out. Both pizzas were flavorful, like actual flavor, not just salt. The perfect cheese to topping ratio with fresh toppings. In my humble opinion, this is the best pizza in Richmond. I'm glad I called my order in bc when I arrived at 4pm, there were at least 5 ppl waiting outside which grew to over 20 by the time I left with my food. I was told later that they sold out... I ordered the Temple of Boom pizza (vegan) and Meathead superhero (vegan). The pizza crust was EXTREMELY thin. I was highly disappointed and I don't think I got any vegan cheese although I paid a $4 upcharge. However, the flavors were amazing, especially the sage and balsamic glaze. The Meathead sammie was by far the favorite of the two items I got. The meatballs were huge and the sauce was just right. I was happy with the amount of "cheese" on the sandwich. I could've even put some of it on the pizza lol.. Although I'm still disappointed about the pizza, I'm still willing to give them another chance to make up for it at my next visit. read more

My friends and I visited this restaurant this past Sunday after church and it was a really good experience. The restaurant is very small but I actually like that about it. Makes the experience feel personal (& they have outdoor seating which will be great for the warm weather approaching) We got the Althea, the chicken Caesar salad, and I don't remember the name of the pizza but it had a white sauce base (I believe), mushrooms, and a balsamic glaze and everything was prepared perfectly. They have a bar with a few beers on tap and a wide range of menu options. You can also just build your own pizza which I like because sometimes in indecisive. The service was pretty good. Finally got on over to this pizza joint. My wife and I have passed it numerous times in the past and today was the day we finally got there. We ordered two medium pizzas for football Sunday. Our server was friendly. We started with the drop dead legs (boneless wings) and a Caesar salad. Both were on point and the Caesar dressing was some of the best I've had! We got two 12" pies. The wait was longer than told and when I came inside to check on the order, they brought the pizza right out to me from the kitchen. Nice. Fresh. And undercooked. The cheese was oddly liquid (see pics) and the parmesan stench was whew (which beware - the menu doesn't say it comes with it and my whole car smelled like someone barfed parmesan). The real gag is that the wait and price seemed worth it for a gloriously-advertised bacon pizza, but the pizza was missing the bacon. No meat at all. Just raw veggies, soggy bread, and wet cheese. I had the pan cheese pizza (take out) and was so mesmerized by the appearance that I forgot to take a pic before devouring it! It was hot, super cheesy, and the crust was buttery and crispy! Was in a funk and needed to get the kiddos out of the house for a pizza. We asked around and we're told not to miss Hot for Pizza...to tell you it was awesome doesn't do this place justice. Beginning with the ambiance, what a cool vibe. Really enjoyed the pictures on the wall and the laid back vibe HFP greeted us with. The staff was quick to give advice, but also noted everything was awesome, which I will get to in my review of the food. It's small, but that helps add to the fun vibe. If you're looking for a place to spread out you may do better outside (it was closed for us due to rain) but the inside was tight. Again, not a complaint more of a heads up since you've read this far. The pizza...holy pizza. We enjoyed the lasagna pizza, which both my wife and I kicked ourselves that we had not thought of....it was so good. We got the medium pizza between my wife, 2 under six girls and myself & it was devoured. "Epic" is what my five year old called it. My wife has a tendency to take pizza and douse it in hot pepper and cheese...this wasn't needed for this thing of beauty.
