Good Points: This yoga studio is beautiful, offers great prices, and has a huge practice room giving each person a large space! Bad Points: This studio is on carpet! This is particularly bad if the fact that it can cause a lot of problems with mold! Gross. It's a bit Recently, I pledged not to do Bikram because of the bad ethics behind Bikram regarding sexual assault, so maybe this would be a good starting point to offer hot yoga instead of Bikram for those who don't want to support that. I'm back for rehabilitation. I originally started Bikram Yoga for a back issue after physical therapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and massage therapy did not help my back. I had relief after 1 month of Bikram. After 5 years I thought I would change my workout and go back to the gym. After a few months there, I injured my knee and am back to Bikram to heal. After just a few weeks, my knee is much improved. Thank goodness they got rid of the carpeting. Bikram will always be a part of my routine. After all, it is true, after 60 exercise is mandatory! read more

Love this place! You get a full 90min and a great instructor. There are plenty of mirrors in the studio so you're able to get several views of yourself to make sure you have the right pose. The instructor pushes you to your limit and that's exactly what I look for. Bathroom/showers are great as well. I drive from Redwood City to San Mateo for a reason. read more

RACIST STUDIO TOWARDS LATINAS! This was my first pilates class and I've never been so disappointed and mistreated. I arrived 5 minutes early and was turned away. Two days later, I returned 7 minutes early only to be to mistreated by an old white racist female receptionist who demanded my Groupon voucher and spoke to me in a demeaning tone. She ordered me to create a password and then smirked when I quickly signed a waiver as I rushed into class. After the class, I heard her talking about me to the instructor giving me dirty looks. When another Groupon client (Asian & White) arrived late she was respectful and kind. Clearly unfair treatment. I want a refund! To this business owner...Latinos make up 25.6% of the San Mateo population and is steadily growing. How do you make your establishment welcoming when your receptionist is insulting and clearly prejudice toward Latino patrons? I guess your business is not for equal treatment of all people. read more

The teachers are amazing , very supportive , helpful and the atmosphere before , during and after class is very special . It is always challenging , but so much easier to do it in the group setting . Nurturing, positive and welcoming are the words I choose to describe this studio. I have been practicing for a couple of months and not only do I feel great, I enjoy the instructors and the fellow students. I was very intimidated leading up to my first visit, and everyone from the receptionist to the fellow students made me feel comfortable in my own skin. The studio is gorgeous and CLEAN! Attended the free inferno Pilates class and loved it! I loved sweating and working out the muscles I don't use when I run so this was a treat! Will look into getting a membership! Facility was clean and zen and although there's no toilet they do have showers so I recommend using the 'loo' before you attend a class. read more

I usually don't write reviews, but my experience here was really that bad. The studio itself was smelly. It was a chemical smell mixed with BO. My real beef is with the instructor. A blonde woman with an accent. This was my first hot yoga class in a few years, but from what I remember it was never this unfriendly and militant. I really didn't like her approach to running the class, but more so she chewed me out for wearing my fitbit in front of the whole class! Later on when I started feeling queasy I quietly sat on my mat and sipped some water, which she told me not to do...? When I felt better I joined back in, this woman, again, called me out to the class, "Livy has joined us again!" and clapped. Good grief lady! There are two-sides to every story, I'm sure this woman was just trying to motivate me, but I felt like I was in a strict school getting picked on by teacher. I love yoga. I love how self-affirming it can be and I've always felt encouraged to do my own thing based on what feels right and what doesn't. Never, in all my time doing yoga, have I ever seen a spotlight put on someone in the class, but that seems to be her way of instructing. Not for me. I wish I could get my money back. read more

I have done Bikram yoga once before a coupe years ago and have done regular yoga a few times. And I mentioned this to the front desk. So I knew some of the basics but I'm no expert. During the class the instructor kept on calling me out in front of the class. Mentioning "You said you took this class before". In a room of strangers this is not something someone should say. I came back to Bikram a broken man. I started Bikram yoga way back in the year 2000 at what is now the Seacliff Studio. My girlfriend dragged me into class several times a week. I was into it for a while there. I did it for a few years. I got kinda bored with it and did karate for a few years. I got bored with that. Then I did Brazilian Jiu jitsu for a few years. Two knee operations later I had to move on to something else. I never classified myself as an athlete, but I needed to have a workout that tested me a bit. I started doing videos like P90x and Insanity. Then my baby was born and I started doing t25. (25 min workouts) I'm getting a little older and these workouts and years of martial arts started taking a toll on my body. For the last several years I have had some form of pain. I started noticing more chronic issues. I went in for an MRI and it turns out I have three bulging discs in my lower back along with arthritis, a Tarlov's Cyst, and a few other things. I have neck pain from being choked (jiu jitsu) plus I also have very limited mobility in my neck, I have lingering knee issues from my surgeries, I have been dealing with hip pain, shoulder pain....I've had so many areas of pain, I'm sure I'm forgetting something.(FYI Funny thing about Bikram yoga is you kinda start remembering your various pains because your pain results in misalignment.) I asked my neurosurgeon and spine specialist what the heck is wrong with me. They both said "you are 43...You can't do these high impact exercises anymore." The realization hit me that I need to do something that will heal my body and also give me a workout. My approach towards my fitness is going to have to change. I looked on Yelp for a Bikram studio in San Mateo. I saw this studio. I sent an email and they responded that they weren't open yet. I told myself that once they open, I would try Bikram again. I kept checking in and one day they were finally open. I've been going there for several months and I feel like I'm gaining control over my pain. It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, but a lot of my pain has become an afterthought. I'm not feeling so broken anymore. For you folks who haven't done this form of yoga before: I have done many, many Bikram classes over the years. I have never said to myself "Gee, this is such a fun experience!" It is an hour and a half of torture. It's a test that a lot of people just can't handle. It is literally the counter to the modern lifestyle. Everything in society is about instant gratification. In a Bikram yoga class, you have to pay your dues. You have to suffer for an hour and a half before you get your reward. "Your reward"...you ask? The end of class. Lol It sounds funny, but it's true. My favorite part of class is the second I get out of that hot ass room and feel the cool fresh air from the lobby. (Yeah....lobby air is all of a sudden "fresh.") My other reward is obviously the way I feel when I'm not in class. Also, you will notice this studio gets very humid. Unusually humid. It seems like the instructors got the memo because some of them will let a little air in to drop the humidity down. Good idea BTW. I'd say only 10% of people actually like it when it is crazy hot and humid. (Coincidentally, I'm guessing around 10% of the population are crazy.) The space is a really good space. Lots of room. I'm regretting the day this studio becomes really popular and everyone is packed together like a bunch of sardines. It's a real treat having a little elbow room. I remember doing Bikram at Funky door (odor)in the Haight many years ago. What a hot, jam packed, sticky mess that place was. The carpet here is interesting. I don't remember doing yoga on carpet, but I actually think I prefer it The teachers: So far, so good. I'm the kind of person who kinda likes to be left alone. That being said, everybody seems pretty friendly. Some are more articulate than others, but as long as they keep the class flowing and aren't jerks - I am good. Oh yeah....a cool thing happened recently. There is this posture called "half locust." For the longest time I skipped that posture because it jammed my messed up neck. Every time I did it, it was causing me a lot of pain. I've never had an instructor give me a suggestion as to what I can do as an alternative. Sarah actually did a little research and found the alternative posture for pregnant ladies. Sure, I'm a manly man, but it works! This is the first review I've done on Yelp. Nobody asked me to do it BTW. I like the place and what it is doing for my body so I decided to share it. Sure, it's hot and miserable and I'm telling myself how much it sucks while I am in there....but as the saying goes..."No pain, No gain." read more

This facility is great! It's a little hidden so look for the building that says '1528' next to McDonalds. The studio is on the 2nd floor. There is parking behind the building (away from the street), or you can park on the main road. The studio itself is pretty new. The carpet is still very soft, making it a little difficult on your feet but will definitely make them stronger. The facility is very clean. The women's changing/shower room has 3 stalls. The restroom is outside of the studio but is just down the hall. You are able to rent a mat and towel for a total of $3 (or individually if you choose.) It's been about 1.5 years since I re-started Bikram Yoga on 11/25/14--and I've gone 4 times already! I've had Teresa as my instructor for all 4 classes and she is awesome. She gives great guidance and encouragement. I have not experienced other instructors yet but take note that Teresa allows for 1 official water break during the standing series and instructs to refrain from using towels as aids during positions--as your body will become stronger without it. She also focuses on breathing and form before advancing in a posture (i.e. Keeping your standing leg straight without your knee bending in the 'standing-head-to-knee' pose.) I appreciate that at the beginning of her class, she reminds that your body is different each time coming in and to be respectful of this. I'm so glad that I joined using the $10 for 10 classes (through Yelp) and will definitely consider membership after completing the deal. read more

This place is great there's parking, three showers stall for the ladies area and the staff is nice. Unfortunately my favorite teacher is taking a break for a few months. Bring a bottle of water or coconut water filled with ice when coming. 90 min class with no bathroom breaks so clean house first. Don't park your mat in front of other students because they like to be able to check there form when practicing. Don't sit under the heat vent because last time I did my fingertips were on fire. Wish all the instructors turned on the fan mid class and cracked open the door every so often. Located on the second floor, door code 222 if you take the 530am class. Namaste read more

I am a long-time Bikram practitioner and love the practice. I visited the studio as an out-of-town guest during a business trip. The instructors were warm and welcoming and led the practice perfectly (I attended twice). The space is beautiful, the lobby is open and clean, and the locker rooms are quite nice. However, I was disappointed by the condition of the yoga studio. While Bikram previously mandated carpet in his studios, that is no longer the case. Most studios have upgraded their carpet in recent years, as the stench from the sweat and humidity being pumped into the room is overwhelming. The carpet (and smell) really took away from the experience for me. With solid flooring, you have to deal with the smell of sweat but it is infinitely more tolerable (and less nauseating). I also felt like the studio was a bit shoddy -- the ceiling had a plastic tarp-like covering connected with tape. It felt to me like there was more effort put into the aesthetic of the lobby and locker rooms than the place where students spend the majority of their time, the studio. In summary, I would likely attend again, but the smell makes it hard to get excited to go. I think San Mateo Bikram Yoga would see better attendance if they improved the quality of their studio. The studio I practice at regularly (in another state) has at least 3x the students in their 6:30pm classes than this studio (and are drawing from a much less densely populated geography). I love the practice, and I want it to be embraced everywhere. I suggest the studio owners remove these barriers that will limit their success and growth. read more

The studio has CARPET! It has a very, very strong smell of mold/mildew. It's nasty. I had already paid my drop in fee before I took my mat into the studio, otherwise I would have walked out. I had to talk myself into staying and giving it a try. I yoga 4-5 times a week, so I know the smell of sweat and body odor and really don't mind it. This place is different. It's nasty moldy/mildew, probably a health hazard. I was in town visiting, so I didn't do my proper research. I feel places like this give yoga a bad name, which is why I'm writing, for those other students out there that shouldn't have to experience such a terrible place. I'd hate for this to be my first experience into the beautiful world of yoga. On top of the carpet being reason enough to not go, the instructor was rude. She wanted us to go off our mats (onto the nasty carpeted floor) to do some poses. She had the nerve to say something to me instructing me to get OFF my mat onto the floor. I said, "I don't like this carpet." Her response was, "None of us like the carpet." All I wanted to do was do the pose ON my mat. Crazy! Insisting we step and sweat on nasty carpet that countless others have sweated on is rude and disgusting. Any argument that they clean it regularly doesn't mean squat. The place is nasty, trust your nose and these reviews. I would give it zero stars if I could. Do not go here. read more

HOT yoga can be dangerous for everyone if you really try. Ironically. Like it very much at the beginning, but I don't think it's safe or healthy in the terms of HOT. If you do your research you will find that hot make you more flexible, and the instructor always tell you "go beyond your flexibilities" in every poses throughout 90 minutes, which very likely you hurt yourself. HOT yoga makes you sweat and heat not really boot up your energy on the contrary your heart beat slower than in cooler condition. Your body keeps struggling take a break but the instructor and maybe yourself too will encourage you to move on try harder. I say, you should listen to your body. Bikram hot yoga, talk to you yoga. Yoga supposed to concentrate on your breathe and one group of muscles, but HOT yoga will distract you from that. Bikram hot yoga is conversational instructions. Instructors not supposed to do the demonstration, they just read instructions to you, so that you could follow along and teach yourself. When you listen, think, and teach yourself, watch others, your brain were very busy, hard to concentrate. The point for going to a studio is that you could have a closed room with heat and wet. Pretty much doing yoga in a sauna room. The thing is you got both male and female in one room, and like it or not, a lot of them are dress very "limited". About the studio: Carpet for a wet room with people sweating all the time... Certified Bikram yoga studio need carpet instead of wood floor. For carpet, as a lot of reviews said, smelly. They do has air spay going on every 15 - 20 minutes, but I'd prefer no such spray. Sometimes I stand close to the door area, when the spray goes on, I want to sneeze and throw out. It's strong. During each session, when you try to get down, the carpet smells so bad. No way out of it. Although owner says they shampoo the carpet everyday, I doubt. Probably not even vacuumed everyday. Each time I went to a session, I tried hard to not to stand or touch the carpet at all, because hair, dust, and funny things can be found on carpet. I do sneeze a lot sometimes. Shower room: Female's shower room facing the aisle, easily to expose people in side of the shower room. You can use shower room as a change room, but no lockers. Small locker provided, just for your cell phone, wallet and keys. Not enough room for one shoe. Spiritual instructions, thanks, I don't need it. Instructors often tell you, you are in the room practice and making life changes. Come on, 90 minutes a session, shower, driving, prepared and wrap up. Each time you spend at least 2 hours. If you can do 30 day challenge in this studio, you can do 30 day professional training or practice to get a bigger life changes. Or if you do 30 day challenge on making positive influence to the community you got a bigger and broader life changes. The thing is not hot yoga, but yourself. Yoga doesn't carry magic, OK? Crowded studio for popular time. As the studio open longer the studio became more and more crowed in each session. Occasionally, students not pay attention to others, they just walk in and block you in the mirror. Instructors won't do anything about it. You need to talk the situation out yourself. Some students even moved around in the room during sessions. Still, instructors not doing anything. But... if you try to leave or just walk to a mirror because your contact lenses dropped, instructors will call your name and let you wait for the time between poses, despite you were hurt and tearing in the eyes. Instructors: General speaking male instructors are much better than those females. I do observe once an female instructor passed out in the studio. I've also seen few senior male students passed out. And they stayed in the room till the end. Honestly, I was really worried. If I'm the instructor I would suggest them listen to their body, take a break outside of the hot and wet room. Good sides: Location and parking is good. Price is reasonable. Schedule is good, many options. read more

I attended the 830pm Bikram class tonight and really enjoyed it. The teacher was delightful. She was one of my favorite that I've had so far. She really focused on every student and helped me do the best that I could. I'll definitely be coming back. This is the 3rd yoga studio I've practiced at in the Bay Area. My only suggestion would Be to remove the carpet and get hard wood. At the other studios I've had hard wood floors and I feel it's helped my balance a bit more. read more

This studio is just...no. I've been practicing bikram for a few years and I've never been to a studio whose environment makes focusing on my practice so difficult. First, it literally looks like a warehouse once you step into the practice space. The lobby and changing rooms are nice, but the actual studio is just awful. The ceiling needs to be painted, it looks like it's under construction, doesn't look like it's been renovated, but at least the floor looks clean and it doesn't smell. They don't have central heat and air so they use these heaters which are mounted above the mirrors all around the room to heat the space. The heaters are angled down at the students which means that hot air is blowing into peoples' faces while they practice if they want to stand up at the front where they can see themselves to adjust postures. It's hard to focus when your eyes are literally burning, and you can't move spots because you'll get called out by the instructors for disturbing the other students. Second, because there's no temperature control, the room gets hot, and I mean HOT. Bikram is supposed to be hot, but this space is ridiculous. Like i said, I'm a seasoned practitioner. I know what it's like to be in a room so crowded with people that you're swapping sweat and the temperatures quickly rise from so many bodies moving in unison, but a nearly empty class with only 10 people in this space got so hot that i literally had to lie down to cool myself off because i could not breathe. Even other students mentioned to me afterwards that this is the hottest studio they've ever been to. At a certain point, the heat is no longer conducive to a positive yoga experience and gets straight up dangerous. Heat stroke anyone? Finally, in my opinion, the instructors don't really take the time to help you with your postures. The only "feedback" I got from instructors here was about etiquette. Thanks, I appreciate the scolding about me having to leave the room because my eyes felt like they were literally on fire, I couldn't see, and didn't want to rub my eyes with my hands that I had just stepped on with sweaty feet. How about we help me adjust my poses as well? I chose this studio because it's close to my office and they had a Groupon promo, but I think I'll just deal with traffic and go to my preferred studio in San Jose. Now I just wish I could get my Groupon refunded, too. read more

Bikram Hot Yoga San Mateo is my favorite studio and I've visited a lot of various fitness studios in the area. I love how big the studio is and all the mirrors! They do a great job keeping it clean considering how many people practice in there with the sweat-inducing temperatures. I will admit the very first time I came to a class several months ago (thanks to their great Groupon deal), the studio was a little hard to find (I parked on the side of El Camino where I've seen their truck and the studio is on the opposite side) so I suggest going early to give yourself ample time to arrive and check-in. The location is convenient and once you know the code to the parking garage (you can call the receptionist if it's your first time) you'll never have trouble finding a parking spot. I also love how many classes they offer each day of the week and that it was super easy for me to find a class time that worked for my schedule. I personally mostly go for the Hot Pilates classes, which are challenging - but super rewarding. They are listed as "open level" which made me feel less intimidated about going, but expect to sweat and get a full-body workout! I started seeing improvement and results with consistent practice and especially love that the exercises strengthen the muscle groups that my physical therapist had recommended. The combination of great instructors and all the benefits of the heat-stress win this studio a 5/5 in my book. read more
