Wouldn't stay here again. We had to switch rooms 3 times due to issues in each one. The first room that we got during check-in, one of the beds was dirty and 3 of the 4 pillows were all yellow. We requested to be switched and the 2nd room we got , the AC started leaking! The 3rd room we got, the AC was extremely loud and we heard a lot of construction and trucks throughout the night! It was difficult to sleep (and sleep in) but we kept the room as we were frustrated with the quality of the rooms we were being given and disappointed the front desk didn't offer some kind of an upgrade/compensation after the first 2 room issues. The bathroom in all 3 rooms was also very different. They just got progressively worse as we switched rooms. The first room, the shower was a separate section than the sink and toilet. The 2nd room, the shower was in the section with the sink and toilet (like normal). The 3rd room, the sink was in the hallway of the room and the shower and toilet were sectioned together. Not only that, the shower and toilet room was SO DAMN SMALL, it was not a pleasant experience at all. The shower was in the corner and didn't have a single damn shelf to hold toiletries. They provided a bottle each of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash, all 3 just on the floor of the shower. The location is great, right by the Alamo. The rooms are clean, they don't always come and clean the room daily. I have a little bit of an argument with them about leaving more Water. They said they don't leave Water in the room except for the first night. I thought that was ridiculous having two cheap water bottles in the room is no big deal in a great way to keep people happy. I think they were short on staff the breakfast was okay nothing great but it was there. In spite all of that I would say again you just gotta tell them what you need. read more

Pros: large windows and plenty of natural light. Wood floors and historic charm. Location is easily walkable, but there are also plenty of other hotels to choose from. Cons: Our room had an odd smell and it was dirty and there were a used Q tip and a dirty glove under the bathroom vanity.. The shower and sink had someone else's hair on them and the bathroom sink was clogged. The construction noise starts before 6 AM, so request a room away from the Alamo side. The staff was cordial but the service was nothing impressive and they were not very accommodating. My car was with the valet for more than a day, and was returned with ants covering the inside. I wouldn't consider staying with Hotel Gibbs again in the future. read more

We stayed here for a basketball tournament and had a generally decent experience. The standout feature was the excellent customer service... both the receptionist and the bellman were incredibly friendly and helpful, which made check-in and getting settled with children a breeze. However, there were a few downsides. The noise from the hallways and outside (9pm-1am) was pretty noticeable especially early in the morning (3am-6am) and the floor tiles were quite loud when guest were rolling their luggage. Along with the loud AC coming on and off all night. This made it harder to get some restful sleep. The cleanliness of the room also wasn't quite up to my standards, though it was manageable for the short stay. The breakfast was typical for a hotel, but it was definitely helpful for the early tournament games. It was simple however enough to fuel us for the day. Great location and right across the street from the Alamo. However, there were some issues with my stay. Upon checking in I was notified that the spectrum cable tv in the rooms were out. At night, I noticed stains on my bedding, on my pillow cases and comforter. Since the person at the front desk couldn't leave his post, I had to change the sheets and bring up everything myself. Also, I had to bring all the items to the front desk. It wasn't fun changing everything when I was ready to go to sleep. Anyways, another night a roach was found underneath the toilet roaming about. I killed the roach quickly and was wary about leaving things on the floor. A few days later, the cable TV was out again. I did try the breakfast items, but I found hair by a tortilla wrap. So that made me concerned with what other foods may have hair. This is why I am giving this hotel a below average rating. read more

Our experience started off on the wrong foot so I'm still a little bit salty. We called ahead to notify the hotel that we would be coming in late. When we showed up nobody was in the lobby and we weren't able to enter. I called several times--all went unanswered. I ended up breaking into the hotel through a side door that bounced open if pressed hard enough. That was a little worrisome. Parking is insanely expensive in the lot next door ($40) and valet is also expensive ($45). They're doing construction on the Alamo and it's very loud. Breakfast ends very early at 9:30. Just a heads up, a lot of homeless people hang around this area. Shout out to Sarah at the front desk for being super helpful. The rooms are tiny but nicely decorated. The Hotel Gibbs was a really unique historical hotel located directly across the street from the Alamo! It was located within 5 minutes of everything from the alamo, to the Riverwalk, to the historic downtown district it is a fascinating 1909 Hotel that has been maintained with comfortable rooms and comfortable beds. I would definitely recommend staying here if you are visiting the Alamo and the immediate area. *I also recommend booking on Expedia as you can probably get a discount on your stay here. I called before arriving to verify our room and also the parking situation. I will note that there is not any free local parking so you should take into account that each night you will pay an additional $45 parking fee. However that includes valet which is done through an app once you arrive. The valet parking staff is very friendly and also very efficient and I appreciated their services. Upon arriving, there is 24/7 staff at the desk. We were given keys for our room and very pleased with the unique historic qualities of the building. There are modern elevators and the rooms have been restored and maintained very well. It's fascinating because you'll feel like you're in an old official city building however once you enter the rooms you'll be quite pleasantly surprised. We got a room with two queen beds in a nice sized room, a private bathroom, refrigerator and also a K-Cup coffee maker. The beds were extremely comfortable and the temperature and cleanliness of the room were quite pleasing. There is even an additional closet with the store your suitcases if need be. I really like the breakfast buffet served in the mornings. All of the scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy we're all fresh and not made from powdered eggs which I appreciate. The hotel does not have a Starbucks like coffee service in the building however just within two blocks or less there is the Crockett Hotel which I would recommend going for excellent gourmet crafted coffees/frappes. We were very pleased that it was located in a safe area directly across from the Alamo where there is 24/7 Sheriff services and it's actually across the street from the police station. It's a very quiet area as opposed to a couple of blocks out where there's more homeless people. But don't be alarmed because it is safe to walk around the local area at night with so much police around. The staff was very friendly and responsive. My only disappointment was that out of our three nights stay, the cleaning service failed to turn our beds and clean our rooms for 2 days. I'm not sure what the issue was but the front desk apologize and made sure that our room was appropriately cleaned and stocked. *There was not a bathtub in the room, but only a shower stall in case you have intentions of taking a bath. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay here! I definitely give this place two thumbs up and it would have given it five stars but due to the limited room cleaning service I can only give it four. Historic, modern, sleek, friendly, convenient, & overall great experience. I know I give out a lot of 5 stars but I only ask for a few things. 1. Great customer service - the caveat is, it has to be genuine. I hate forced service and every single person here was SO friendly. I'm a native San Antonionian and I know we can be nice but I guess I never realized how friendly we really are. From Sarah at the front desk, to the door men helping with my luggage, to the guy who did our wine tasting. 2. Clean - the rooms were spotless, the building is historic so there is some wear and tear but it's minimal. Gibbs has done a fantastic job of preserving the fine details of the building and and even better job of providing some facts about some historical things they've preserved all while maintaining a clean space. 3. Convenience - the Alamo is literally across the street. But I've been there so many times. There are some great local spots in and around the hotel. The walking paths are great and a short 5 minute walk takes me deeper into the city center! We're already planning our stay for next year during fiesta but this time we're staying the whole weekend. PS there was a breakfast included, but we ended up going to a local spot instead because we've always wanted to try it and we went early enough in the morning to where there was no line. I did see people walking around with breakfast. I just didn't get a chance to take a look at it, but heard it was good. PSS there's also a lovely wine tasting made from flowers not grapes. I really liked this hotel. The location is great if you're planning to be near all of San Antonio's popular spots. We were walking distance from Alamo, and could basically see it from hotel. The view was nice. Room was pretty clean, we did encounter gnats which we saw were coming from the shower drain. Our room was small though. The downside of this hotel is the parking. They have valets that park the cars, but only 1 working at a time. So when you need to leave you have to wait awhile for the 1 valet to get your car. I feel like at check out their should be 2-3 guys working. We had to wait 45 mins for our car. Despite this headache, I would stay here again. read more

My one night stay at Hotel Gibbs may have been short but it was certainly memorable! I am a huge fan of historical experiences rather than new and trendy places to stay, and HG supplied exactly what I was looking for. With little pieces of history tucked away in each corner, there was enough to explore to keep me going yet the updates to allow for a comfortable stay were just right! Rooms are small, but what could you expect for renovated office spaces? For what it lacks in size, it makes up for in beauty and location. Tucked away in what felt like a very safe corner of busy downtown, you are not only a stones throw away from The Alamo- you are quite literally sleeping on the original grounds of the mission's complex. Touted as haunted for that very reason, I do have to divulge we heard some weirdly inexplainable noises at about 2 am. And unless a hotel employee was for some reason dragging chains around the floor for fun...I fear we may have experienced a glimpse of the haunt! Your stay provides a free wine tasting at Florvino (DO recommend) as well as complimentary breakfast, however, the food is no different from what you'd find at any chain hotel so it's boasts of signature breakfast tacos did feel a little embellished. That, along with staff who were not rude but also not friendly, more so just...there, is my only reason for four stars. I was looking for a reasonably priced hotel in downtown San Antonio for a staycation for my husband and I and this was certainly it. Walking distance to the Alamo let's you know just how downtown it was. It was way too hot to walk anywhere for us, but it's a great selling point for this hotel. The room was very comfortable, and had the basics of what every somewhat upscale hotel has (i.e. modern decor, bath gel, etc). The room had a Keurig, but they failed to provide bottled water so there was no way to make coffee other than to use water from the sink from bathroom (HARD pass). There is no carpet throughout the hotel so there is an echo everywhere making it mildly annoying when people were in the hallways having what felt like ridiculously loud conversations. Fortunately, it was usual after 9 am before this happened so we could still enjoy sleeping in. I'd definitely return to the hotel. Reasonably priced valet parking ($36/night), a bar (Taproom 1909) downstairs that serves as the space for the free breakfast taco bar each morning from 7 am to 10 am, make it a pretty perfect place for a short getaway to San Antonio. read more

We had a very nice evening downtown and enjoyed our stay at Hotel Gibbs. It's right next to the river walk and the Alamo. Honestly it could be in a better location. The room was a classic style with very attractive interior finishes. The bed was a little stiff but okay for one night. Parking is a little bit of a challenge with the adjacent lot charging $40 for overnight parking. I guess you could say the breakfast in the morning makes up for the parking hassle. I'm not used to paying for parking so it's a little bit irritating but since you're so close to downtown and right in the heart of the historic districts it can be expected you just need to factor that in and not be surprised. Houston Street parking garage is a good option for safe overnight parking. read more

The hotel has a lot of charm! The lobby is small as it use to be an old office building. The rooms are comfortable and carry the charm with original wood flooring from its office days mixed with modern amenities. There is a tremendous amount of construction so do expect some noise. This may be reflected in the price of the rooms. They do have a free breakfast with numerous items to choose from, you will find the same selection in a hotels that offer breakfast. The downside is parking at 42.00 a night, so factor that in with your stay. The location is great and there are a variety of restaurants and things to explore. We went to the Alamo and it was less than a 10 minute walk. We used uber while we were there due to the amount of construction and trying to navigate it. Finding the hotel was frustrating due to GPS not able to get around the construction areas smoothly. So, suggestions are to use the Uber as you will save you the frustration of driving and the people driving in the around you. They are as lost as we were but the locals know how to get around all that. If we come back which is a probability, we would consider the price of parking prior to booking again but if that doesn't bug you then it's a comfort and charming hotel. read more

The staff at the hotel are friendly and knowledgable of the area around the hotel. There are free buffet style breakfasts and free fruit and spa like water. The hotel use to be a bank or post office and you can see some old items there in the hotel. The room I had was modern and it had a huge shower. The wifi is free and there is a desk in the room to work at. Housekeeping will come in during the morning and tidy up the room if you'd like. I was recommended to stay at the hotel to get to be up close to see the Alamo. I walked right across the street and saw the Alamo. My wife scored a gem with one of her hotel apps for the Hotel Gibbs! We jumped on it immediately as we sat in the airport finding a hotel. Lol. Perfect location! Right across the street from the Alamo. We walked every. Downtown, Riverwalk, Historic Market Square. All very close to Hotel Gibbs. We arrived in San Antonio early, and they gladly stored our bags while we hit the streets. We received a text that our room was ready about 2pm. Service at Hotel Gibbs is exceptional! Rooms are small, but space is utilized perfectly, meeting all our needs. We don't mind small rooms since we are not hanging out in the room for long periods, other than sleeping. Room was very clean. Bathroom was very clean with great bath gel and hair products. Loved the wood floors and historic architecture of Hotel Gibbs. Amazing breakfast! Sausage, biscuits, gravy, breakfast tacos! Omg! The hotel is so rad! Talk about a vintage treasure. Linda at the front desk was the best!! She was so sweet and patient when we had questions.The room was incredible! We stayed in the Executive King Suite which has a king bed and pull out couch. The place was really clean and we loved the hardwood flooring. They were great with service animals as well since we had to bring ours along! Buffet style breakfast with some of the best bacon I have ever had. Again can't emphasis enough about how nice the staff was all throughout the hotel. Oh and the bed was beyond incredible. It basically felt like sleeping on a cloud. read more

Our late request for the top floor was quickly supplied. The last night we stayed the AC in our room died and they immediately put us right across the hall which made our move easy. First things first... they will bring a mini fridge to your room upon request. We didn't know that until the day before we checked out. My daughter just moved to San Antonio, so I decided to find a downtown hotel for the first few days so that she and her husband could settle into their apartment first. I scored this one on Hotwire and afterward, I was excited to find that it was 4 stars on Yelp. Although I do think it's a bit closer to a three, it could've just been a bad housekeeper to fault. We were allowed to check in early, which was very nice. We also upgraded to a suite. Room 514 was a corner room with two different views of the city. One overlooked the Alamo. I'm pretty sure that this hotel is the closest to The Alamo, which is open during the pandemic. It is very vintage. Almost too vintage for me. I've stayed in old courthouses, and other vintage hotels, but this one definitely showed it's age in the room. The floors appear to be original and not the cleanest either. During the pandemic, the taproom attached to the hotel is closed to the public, but there was an attendant to serve wine and domestic beer to hotel guests. The bed and pillows were comfortable. Linens were clean and pressed. While I don't mind the refillable shampoo, conditioner and body wash bottles, they ran out halfway through my stay... I think that too was the fault of the housekeeper. Bring your own toiletries, and wear house shoes and you'll be set. I'd stay again and for the price, it's great. read more

Hotel Gibbs oozes history and character, with marble trim, hardwood floors, and a kitty-corner spot across from the Alamo Historic Site. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and we'd love to return! It's an amazing place, with an easy walk down to the Riverwalk and so many unique restaurants. The bed was comfy, and the shower water hot and with a good pressure. The included hot breakfast with breakfast tacos, bacon, waffles, fruit, juice, coffee, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, hit the spot. Only drawbacks which bring a 4 vs 5 star review: Our room, #502, was small, with not much space to open our suitcases, and the bathroom lacked a fan. After a Saturday of exploring the Pearl Brewery and downtown San Antonio along with alcohol we decided to take a Lyft and stay at this wonderful hotel. I was very surprised at how inexpensive it was. We got a good deal for a double bed last minute. After taxes we paid $115 for the night. Not bad considering this hotel is in the heart of downtown right next to the Alamo. The hotel boasts antique décor that I absolutely adore. One of my favorite things about our great city of San Antonio is the preservation of the rich history we have here old San Antonio. The room was very nice and well kept and I'm awfully sorry I did not take a picture of the room. That may have been because I had a few drinks at this point. LOL. The staff was very friendly and accommodating when we requested a late checkout. We will be staying here again for another staycation! read more

Honestly, I have to give it up to this hotel. I'm used to staying in Marriott and other affiliates but when I tell you this hotel is up to par! Super super super amazing with customer service! I was so surprised.. so pleasantly surprised. It was just amazing how I almost refused to stay here but in the end they made my stay so great. **ATTENTION: SERVICE DOG OWNERS/HANDLERS** We occupied a room at the Hotel Gibbs from September 8th to September 9th. During the check-in process, the hotel made an attempt to impose a $75 pet fee. Regrettably, we experienced a lack of professionalism from a specific staff member named Jeff, who exhibited condescension and rudeness. Despite our concerns being raised with the manager, Heather, there was no acknowledgment or apology extended for the unsatisfactory interaction we encountered with Jeff. As per the guidelines provided by Jeff and Heather, Hotel Gibbs adheres to a policy regarding service dogs. This policy stipulates that a $75 pet fee is applicable unless the service dog in question is clearly identified by wearing a vest or harness indicating its status as a service animal. Furthermore, during our interaction with Jeff, he made a notable remark: "the only people that complain about paying are the people with fake service dogs." According to Heather, the hotel has maintained this particular policy for a decade without encountering any notable issues.
